Vet uses drill to mend crocodile’s jaw

Beatrice Langevin performs the worlds first crocodile surgery in this way on the 18th February 2008. The crocodile was injured on a crocodile farm with over 400 of the creatures when it was involved in a violent brawl during the breeding season

Pierrelatte Beatrice Langevin, a veterinary surgeon used instruments, including a domestic drill, when she carried out emergency surgery on a crocodile that had its lower jaw damaged in a fight during the breeding season. The 12ft (3.7m) reptile, which lives at a crocodile sanctuary in Pierrelatte, southern France, was injured during a battle between 400 of the creatures. During the operation Ms Langevin put a towel over the animal’s eyes to protect them while she used the drill and kept its mouth open with a plank of wood. Staff believe it was the first time that major jaw surgery has been performed on a crocodile. (Barcroft)
