Georgia today accused Russia of an “unprovoked act of aggression” after a Russian jet allegedly shot down an unmanned Georgian reconnaissance plane, Alexi Mostrous writes.
Officials in Georgia’s capital, Tbilisi, released video footage which they said showed a MiG-29 fighter launching a missile at the Georgian plane as it flew over the country’s breakaway Abkhazia region.
The allegation - dismissed as “nonsense” by Moscow - is likely to aggravate tensions between the countries, which are locked in a standoff over Georgia’s ambitions to join NATO and Moscow's support for Abkhaz separatists.
“The Government of Georgia strongly condemns the unprovoked act of aggression that took place on April 20, 2008,” the Georgian foreign ministry said in a statement. It summoned Russia’s ambassador to hand him a note of protest.
A spokesman for Russia’s air force said: “Nonsense. What would a Russian jet fighter be doing over Georgian territory?”
The video footage shows a jet aircraft banking to face the drone. A bright flash can be seen as a missile is launched and heads toward the drone.
A few seconds later the screen goes blank.
No identification markings are visible on the aircraft that fired the missile.
“A Russian MiG-29 fighter jet shot down an unarmed, unmanned air vehicle which was performing basic reconnaissance over Georgian territory,” Colonel David Nairashvili, commander of Georgia’s air force, told Reuters.
“It’s absolutely illegal for a Russian MiG-29 to be there,” he said.
“The MiG-29 has a distinctive twin-tail marking. It’s a Russian aircraft. Georgia does not possess it, nor do Abkhaz separatists.”
In Washington, a State Department spokesman, Tom Casey, said the United States was concerned by reports of the incident and was seeking information from the Russian Government.
Abkhazia, on the Black Sea coast, is internationally recognised as part of Georgia. It has been controlled by Moscow-backed separatists since a war in the early 1990s.
Abkhazia’s separatist administration said on Sunday that its own forces had shot down the drone because it was violating Abkhaz air space and breaching ceasefire agreements.
Last week, Georgia accused Moscow of a de facto annexation of Abkhazia and a second breakaway Georgian region, South Ossetia, after President Putin ordered his Government to establish closer ties with the separatists.

The Abkhazian people have been wanting Independence from these muderous people (Georgians) for a long time. Why do they have to have another war to prove this fact. The shooting down of this drone could have been an American war plane!!! Not only do Russian MiGs have twin tails, afterall ??
Richard, moscow,
Abkhazians did not fight for independence and they do not have democratic society. Russia fought against Georgia in early 90s and every real democratic country with a free media knows that.
Tornike, London, United Kingdom
embargo Russia? buddy, ur out of ur mind!!! if u do, western Europe will freeze to death in the winter. not a bright idea, not a bight idea at all...
Jordan, Mississauga, Canada
Let Abkhazia people say their word, it is Democracy. And they have actually said it, when majority of population got Russian citizenship and claim themselves independent of Georgia. Even if it was Russian Mig, Russia had just defended their citizens against potential Georgian aggression.
Dmitry, Moscow, Russia
the damage caused to the whole world by the USA is uncomparable. All over the world people are dying or suffering misery as a result of the US politics and the US attempts to dominate the world. Russia´s gas is a large gift to the Western Europe, so David from New York keep silent, please! Indeed, despite being a large and powerful country, Russia doesn´t harm anyone through their politics or interests, like the USA do. what shoud that mean: "USA are concerned about the situation in Gerorgia"?? it´s not your sphere of interest! stay away from from us!
Angela, Kiev, Ukraine
...just 5 posts before the US & Nato are blamed! No doubt from a citizen of a free & democratic country. Nato was formed as a defensive pact following the 2nd World War - where freedom was fought for at great cost. Freedom comes at a price, so often forgotten. Why deny others the right to security?
Chris, Glasgow, Scotland
Its a shame to blame Russia for those who invaded Iraq (and caused more than 100 000 people die) and helped the Kosovo's independence (terrorists, killer and human organs traders).
Shay, Darren, David, David, Milan, look at yourself first before complaing at Russia. Show example of good manners.
vennen, Yalta, Ukraine
What leadership in Georgia clearly did not understand is that is not important who is right rather what reality on the ground is. They have to be realistic .Will they do more damage than good if they provoke Russia. How much help can they expect from USA and EU? If Russia behaves like Israel did against Lebanon (read Georgia) couple years ago than Russia will be only condemned, cease fire will be established and Georgian infrastructure destroyed.
gustav , hayward, ca
How the Russia can be a peacekeeper in this region?
Even idiot can tell MIG29 and L39 (Russian abxzian "coalition" said it was shot down by L39 )
David, Milan,
If someone's accusing Russia of being an aggressor, why doesn't he remember US' recent invasion of Iraq and even more recent threats against Irna?
Alexei, St Petersburg, Russia
What was a Georgian drone doing over Abkhazia? It is time that UN council does something about constant Georgian provocations.
Andy, Los Angeles,
Why can't the people of Abkhazia be given liberation like the people of Kosovo? If the majority of the locals want it, who are we to deny it?
Ian Sankey, Plymouth, England
Russia is a very big agressor. so sad that Europe which is entangled into Russian evil energy scheme, does not and can not afford to do much about it. will this appeasment ever end.? we know from history what appeasment led to. Georgian radar system is shared with the NATO because of agreement on information sharing. if there was a an airplane from russia they will have a proof. Lets see what tey will do. Russians probably believe that they still live in early 1990s when those countries could not detect anything. the bronze age is over. they got caught so many times and nothing is getting done. The UN will say it is "very concerned " and thats it. That organization wastes our tax money. they dont solve problems. How can it be useful when russia and china hold it in their hands. the UN is just a "delivery service" (just like FedEx, UPS and DHL) of aid bought with our money. no solution to the problems.
David, New York, USA
Didn't Russia also get caught over U.S. air space? I am an American living in Georgia and this is without a doubt Russia once again trying to dominate eastern Europe with thier heavy handed tactics. Putin is now the new "Czar" of Russia and want to be the leader of a new "eastern block"
Mart, Tbilisi, Georgia
What was a Georgian drone doing over Abkhazia? The UN should finally do something about constant Georgian provocations.
Andy, Los Angeles,
First, there's no proof it was a Russian plane. Most likely it was the Abkhazians, perfectly justified to shoot down an offensive spy plane over their own territory, for which they fought a bllody war in the 1990s. The Russians should officially recognise Abkhazia's and South Ossetia's independence (just like you did with Kosovo). And then your Georgian NATO-wannabe friends will be facing real Russian jets! Like the SU-35, beautifully powerful peacemaker.
Peter Smirnoff, Melbourne, Australia
Compared to what the West and the US does, this is nothing (even if it is true). People complain about Russia but ignore what the US does and how NATO is expanding all across Europe. I thought the Cold War was over.
Ann, Barrington,
Hey Darren, I agree with you. Don't forget the buzzing of American warships.
Bryan, Houston, USA
This is outrageous! Russia should be help accountable for this clear act of aggression. It is clear that Russia is trying to intimidate the west, notably Britain and American. First there is the semi-regular invasion into British airspace, which has caused our forces to deploy our fighters, to escort them out on more than one occasion, now this. I believe an embargo would be a very smart move indeed.
Darren, Dunfermline, Scotland
Seems fair, NATO gets Kosovo, Russia gets Abkhazia.
David, Toronto, Ontario
On Sunday Georgian side was adamant there was no Georgian spy-plane over Abkhasia, now they blame the Russians for shooting it down ?
By the way, Abkhasians insist they shot it down themselves. The same as the previous one.
Elena, Beds,
Nice shooting! How do we know this isn't some footage from a weapons testing drone?
Conall, Dublin, Ireland
Time to embargo Russia!
Shay, boston, usa/ma
