Italy shifted farther to the right yesterday as a former neo-Fascist was elected Mayor of Rome.
The victory by Gianni Alemanno overturns decades of centre-Left rule in the Italian capital and gives a further boost to Silvio Berlusconi, the centre-Right leader, who won national elections two weeks ago.
In the run-off election for Mayor of Rome, Mr Alemanno, a member of the “post-Fascist” Alleanza Nazionale, gained 53.6 per cent of the vote to 46.4 per cent for Francesco Rutelli, who served as deputy Prime Minister and Culture Minister in the outgoing Government of Romano Prodi.
The new Parliament meets today and Mr Berlusconi is expected to form his Cabinet in the next few days, with key posts — including the Interior Ministry — going to the anti-immigrant Northern League, which won 8 per cent in the national vote and is allied with Mr Berlusconi's People of Liberty grouping.
In Rome Mr Alemanno, 50, who began his career as youth leader of the neo-Fascist Italian Social Movement, promised to close Roma encampments and to expel 20,000 “gyspies and immigrants” whom he said had been detained for offences then released.
Mr Rutelli was forced to respond in kind, suggesting that women should be issued with electronic bracelets with panic buttons linking them to police stations.
Il Giornale, the newspaper owned by the Berlusconi family, said police statistics showed that a third of all thefts, rapes and murders in Italy are committed by illegal immigrants.
Rome's previous mayor, Walter Veltroni, who is now leader of the Centre Left, oversaw a 10 per cent increase in tourism and imaginative new projects including a music auditorium and the Rome Film Festival. He was accused, however, of enjoying the company of film stars while neglecting crime and potholes.

@Teresa: it's strange but, if you don't remember, in the past election(2006) for the mayor in rome veltroni wins with 60% against the 30% of alemanno...is this sign of bad governance?
I don't think so.
Giorgio, Bari, Italy
Unfortunately Gianni Alemanno won...the fascist, he was in prison for fightings in the past...now Rome will became a very dangerous city for immigrants and citizens.

The statistics of Mr Veltroni are not so reliable (I refer to "10 per cent increase in tourism"), a few days before the national elections he stated that the previous distance of 10 points from the Berlusconi's party was now made up, Berlusconi didn't think the same...
Dario, Torino, Italy
So Rutelli admits that the security situation is so serious that women should wear a 24 hours personal alarm connected to the police but he doesn't intend to do anything against it?
Oh, but sure, he wants to promote FESTIVALS..
This is not just ridiculous, but also offensive against women!
Anna, Cuneo, Italy
This country needs a strong rule, otherwise the inbred lack of discipline of its people, combined with the hordes of new barbarians flocking in from all around the world, will bring it down to a miserable excuse for what could be the one of the most beautiful countries in the world.
Richard, Roma, Italy
I am very happy of this great victory of Alemanno in Rome. In Italy it's not forbbidden to the postcommunists make communists salutes. Until few days ago Communist had red flags and they were not forbidden. So why some people cannot make a Roman salute? Do you cancel Romans from history?
letizia, bolzano, italy
I agree with Dario, take a look on the web and you'll see people screaming "duce duce" (a title used for Mussolini) and waving their right arms for the "Roman salute", adopted during the Mussolini era as official salute. That's not folklore, it's an offence to people who fought against dictatorship
Luca, Pescara, Italy
However, "centre-right has absolutely nothing to do with fascism", but not here in ITaly. Please take a look at any newspaper online (such as Repubblica) and see how the city centre was surrounded by so many people saying "Duce, Duce" and raising their right hands. Please, we don't have to forget!:(
Dario, Rome, Italy
It is not a defeat of Centre Left. It is Rutelli who failed. While voting for the mayor we voted also for the governor of the "county" of Rome.In Rome Rutelli got less vote than Zingaretti, the new governor (Centre left). At least 50.000 people in Rome voted Left for county then Alemanno, far Right
francesco, Rome, italia
Rutelli has had an insignificant political career, with a zero achievement rating. To vote for him, would have meant Rome not progressing for the next five years.
Matt, Napoli, Italy
Rome moving to the right proves how successful Veltroni was at being Mayor. The Romans were so impressed that they immiediately moved to the otherside? Thank God, he didnt become Prime Minister!
Teresa, Napoli, Italy
Good morning,
You must remember that italian people are not against honest immigrants but against illegal immigrants that support their life on crimes, drugs, robbing and killing honest residents
You are not for sure aware of what happens in Italy in every daylife
Giancarlo Bevilacqua, Milano, Italia
I don't think that the post communist 'PD' wear the hammar and sickle symbol around their necks they have given up this reference to the communist past.
Alemanno still has the Celtic cross very much a fascist symbol hanging very close to his bosom. Not to mention his wife daughter of Mr Rauti
Mark Shaw, Milan, Italy
It is Walter Veltroni fault! He has given our country and our city to the left! He should give up with politics!
Francesca, rome, Italy
Rome is big city ( not only music auditorium and Rome film Festival!!!) and it's full of problems ( not only crime): trafic, no bus, very high houses prices, only tow "metro" lines, no kindergandens for everybody, etc. etc,....I vote for left but I am tired...
daniela, rome, italy
Very well also Rome has been taken out of comunist hands and we can now look to a brighter future for our country.
