MOSCOW The Kremlin and the West squared up over the future of Georgia yesterday as Russia was accused of planning “military aggression” against its former Soviet satellite.
Tensions soared after Nato issued a warning that Georgia’s territorial integrity was being undermined by Russia’s decision to increase troop numbers in the separatist regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
Russia has kept peacekeeping forces in the two regions since they broke from Georgia in the 1990s. It announced on Tuesday that it was boosting its numbers to 3,000 in response to what it claimed were Georgian plans to invade Abkhazia.
The pro-Western Government in Tbilisi has denied any build-up of troops in the area and accused Russia of planning to annexe the territories.
David Bakradze, Georgia’s special presidential envoy, urged Moscow not to spark a full-blown conflict after talks in Brussels yesterday with Javier Solana, the European Union foreign policy chief. The United States said that President Bush was being kept informed of the situation.

250,000 Georgians were thrown out of Abkhazia in 1990s. I think it's only fair they have a say in which way Abkhazia goes.
Lets get them back into their homes and have a vote. Oh, yes, and shouldn't Russian "peacekeepers" facilitate the return of these refugees. They don't seem keen. I wonder why.
Geoff, London, UK
Independent Kosovo = the european taxpayers pay. Independent Abkhazia and South Ossetia = the russian taxpayers pay. Why we must pay for the idiotism of the Politics? Why don't EU or Russia let the other countries in peace and take care only their own business?
Jorma, Kotka, Finland
Let me remind you that almost all current population of Abkhazia has Russian citizenship. So Russian goverment has some natural obligations in terms of their security...
Alexey, Moscow, Russia
You have to love US push for democracy!
If it doesn't serve United States policy, thereby lets deny the freedoms of people in Abkhazia and South Ossetia.
Alex, Melbourne, Australia
Russia's forces are peace-keepers under the UN mandate. Gergia has tried once to ethnicly cleanse Abhazia and South Ossetia in 1990. Russian soldiers and many volunteers have saved these small nations. They must be given independence like Kosovo. Georgia be aware, US masters are far away!
Oleg, Toronto, Canada
If NATO wants to support the independence of Kosovo and put more troops in the country, then why shouldn't countries such as Russia increase their troop numbers in Abkhazia and South Ossetia but also pursue their own territorial ambitions?
Balance, please!
Piotr, Madrid, Spain
The Russians recently sold state-of-the-art antiaircraft missiles to Syria, Iran, Venezuela and China. Perhaps the west should 'Sell' some of our own to Georgia under the 'lend lease' system.
I.E. Any that you don't fire at the Russians you have to pay for.
Richard, Ireland,
It is unhelpful to all parties to keep defining independent, sovereign Georgia in terms of its former status ie as 'former Soviet satellite'. The Soviet and Tsarist periods were relatively brief episodes in Georgia's long history and the terminology is becoming rather worn.
George, Montrose, UK
A sad consequence of having an alliance of weak militaries and weak willed leaders is that "warnings" to Russia from NATO will mean little.
