Boar hunters from a village in Provence where Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie have just moved into a 17th-century chateau have appealed to the Hollywood stars to provide access to the grounds despite their support for environmental causes and desire for tranquillity.
The couple arrived last weekend at Château Miraval, near Aix-en-Provence, as Jolie, 32, prepared to give birth to twins. They will rent the 35-room former Benedictine priory for the next three years.
Its 1,000-acre estate includes vineyards that produce one of the Var region’s finest white wines, two swimming pools, a helipad, a forest and a lake with swans and geese.
Alain Mayen, a retired mason from the nearby village of Correns who hunts for boar and deer on the property, has urged its owner Tom Bove, an Italian-American industrialist, to ensure that the actors do not declare the grounds off limits.
Last year Bove invited a party of 65 to hunt 100 boar on the estate. “We’re waiting to hear back from Mr Bove and we hope the new residents won’t ban our hunts,” Mayen said.
“The environment is all very well but you have to protect the vines. Hunting is the only way to stop the vines getting damaged.”
According to local officials, the couple, both environmental campaigners, are seeking a quiet backwater for the twins, their daughter Shiloh, who is nearly two years old, and three adopted children, Maddox, 6, Pax, 4, and Zahara, 3.
Michael Latz, the mayor of Correns, said: “Hunting here is part of the local tradition. Boar and deer are harmful. If you don’t hunt them, you don’t get grapes.”
Officials said the couple had chosen the property after it was recommended to them by Pitt’s friend Bono, the singer, who made an album with his band U2 at a recording studio in the castle’s cellars.
Pink Floyd recorded part of The Wall there. The Cure, Sade and Oasis have all stayed in the chateau.
Apart from the beauty of the property, Pitt and Jolie were attracted by the organic nature of all its produce, ranging from olive oil to lavender, sage and thyme.
The actors and their children are keeping a low profile. “The only sign of their presence is a couple of gendarmes outside the gates. All we see is their helicopter flying off every so often,” said Jean-Claude Sadion, who runs the local tourism office.
For Jolie, the castle is a reminder of her French mother Marcheline Bertrand, who died of cancer last year. She told an interviewer last week that she had decided to teach her children French. “[French is] the second language in our house. I’m still learning, but my children are starting to speak the language, so being here is very good for them,” she said.

O dear, poor Angelina & Brad - with such very young children, and 2 more babies' arrival imminent, they will probably have a cacophony of crying if / when the rifles go off.
I expect they didn't consider this problem arising and were relieved to find somewhere they could keep the paparazi out

People who call themselves "animal advocates" and think that that they have rights to "herd thinning" should think again. May be they confuse the term "advocate" with the term "God"? What are they to decide who is to live or die?
Dasha, Sammamish, USA
1.dear veggies:it's your business if you don't eat meat, but the human race are omnivores, ergo it's our nature to eat it,although most people it too much of it
2.i love animals and i try not to harm them(even mosquitos)but i do see the reason for herd thinning but a party of 65?that's just murder
Serena , vienna,
I am a conservationist and love the outdoors, but due to a lack of natural predators herbivores must be culled in a controlled manner. Hunting is essential to maintain a healthy herd and balance in the local ecology. I used to live in the pyrenees and have seen first hand how destructive boar are.
Jay Tee, Oxford, UK
I too am an animal adovcate. But I do agree with thinning of the herd for the herds sake. It sounds like they are speaking of opening up the land for one day - --- most responsible hunters utilize the animals for their hide and meat - irresponsible, egotistic hunters hang them on walls only.

Wild boar are extremely dangerous. I wouldn't want my children playing freely outside if they were anywhere in the vicinity. Kimberley from Brooklyn needs to grow up here These are not cute little piggy wiggies but large dangerous wild animals which cause damage and as a by product can be eaten
c chapman, corridonia, italia
Ever kill a mosquito or a fly that is bugging you? Wild boars and deer eat our agricultural products and are a bigger problem to farmers than the fly and mosquito that constantly just "bug" your ear. Wild boar are also very dangerous to have near humans. Boar and deer are not pets. Dogs & cats are
John, Duluth, USA
Hopefully, Angelina and Brad will not let this happen. It's their
land. No one has respect for animals anymore and it's savage.
If we can't take care of the lesser beings, we are unable to take care of each other. Most people don't think twice of killing. It's
disgusting. Priorities people. Its sick
Kimberly, Brooklyn, USA
Second time. Animal hunters are at the bottom of the food chain.
Fruits and veggies are much better for us. Ask anyone with half
a brain. Of course there are those that know no better, pity. No
hunting animals for food. It's barbaric. Grow up people. How
would you like it if you ate your pet?
