Gordon Brown will come under huge pressure to suspend the ratification of the Lisbon treaty through Parliament if the Irish vote “no”.
After weeks of painstaking debate the treaty Bill is thought to be about a fortnight away from its crucial third reading — and ministers seem keen to complete the process even in the event of an Irish rejection. There is a precedent for pushing ahead, as happened after the Irish rejection of the Nice treaty in 2000 but there is a more recent precedent of stalling the ratification, as happened after the French and Dutch voted down the EU constitution in 2005. Then Britain scrapped its own referendum.
Foreign Office officials say that they do not have a Plan B because the Lisbon treaty is already Plan B of the failed constitution. EU heads of state are to meet on June 19 and 20. The 27 leaders would have to make a statement but nobody knows how they will cope with another rejection. A likely option will be to continue operating under the amended rules for 15 countries set by the Nice Treaty.

Mmmm....Gordon Brown, would you give billions of pounds to a huge unelected socialist organisation that has not had its accounts signed off by its own auditors for the past 13 years ???
If so my beer, petrol, utility bill and food bill could do with a few extra quid for the next 50 years
Richard Garland, Greater Manchester,
The EU as it stands is currently not fit for purpose and it is in the best interests of the UK to either knock the whole shooting match to pieces and re-shape into a free trade model.
We gain rock all from it at present
Graeme Scott, Brisbane, Oz
The horrendous situation this country now finds itself in is because we have surrendered this country to the EU. The only hope for Britain is to withdraw from Europe. Initially there will be problems to overcome, but the billions of pounds saved would offset them.
WelshPatriot, London,
I do agree with Richard, Britons need a real and thorough debate about being part of the Union. Britain is the only country in which there is constant haggling about being in the Eu or not. We have never questionned ( continental EU) us being in the EU as much as you have....
pascal-pierre, Brittany, EU (France)
At least the Irish have a government with some understanding of the word DEMOCRACY.
N Morgan, Stockport, UK
I dont expect the antieuropeans to know and understand the actual legal framework, which is a mess. but they could think about what the Lisbon Treaty means: keeping the EU a functioning framework for the peaceful development of our continent
Luca,, Genoa, Italy, EU,
Never thought I'd say this but 'Come on Ireland!'
Dean, Southampton, England
Let us hope that the Irish do the right thing and vote NO. They would be doing the 500 million people in Europe who are denied a vote on this and in the future for those who govern them.
M. Cawdery, ramone, Co. UK, EU.
I agree, I hope that Ireland does indeed vote NO
The Lisbon treaty is just the failed constitution, but in a new cover
Edward, Newbury, England
We can only hope they vote "NO"
Andy, Stockholm / Chesterfield, England / Sweden
The rest of Europe waits and hopes the irish say NO, we all said no and they just changed the name and this time did not give us a vote, its time to end this farce give us a free vote on the EU it's self so we can all so no and pull out!
MR W Jones, Liverpool, england
Ireland I would love you forever if you vote no for this. You are the only Country that has been allowed to vote. Don't waste it.
Roger, Surrey.,
I am a proponent of the EU, but it does needs reforming. Clearly, it is not possible to have referendums on every issue otherwise there would be no progress at all. But the continued sniping by the so called anti-europeans in our country dont add to the debate either. A mature debate is needed now
Richard, Plymouth,
