A British teenager who died during a drinking session just hours after arriving in a Greek holiday resort was named by police today.
Matthew Cryer, 17, was found collapsed outside a popular club at the Laganas beach resort on the island of Zakynthos in the early hours of Monday.
His mother, Joanne Froud, and stepfather Ian, were today being comforted at their home in Killamash, Sheffield. Police had contacted them after finding their number among the recent calls on Matthew's mobile telephone.
A tribute website created by friends yesterday contained the message: “Mat will always be rememberd as a person who had great sence of humuor, if you was round him you would be laughing. he brought joy to his friends and everyone around him.”
Matthew is believed to have arrived in the resort with a male friend on Sunday. He was found unconscious outside the Cocktails and Dreams Club after reportedly being sick.
Greek Police are still waiting for the results of a post-mortem examination but initial reports suggested he had suffered a heart attack after chocking.
The owner of the Cocktails and Dreams Club — which is based on the bar in the Tom Cruise film Cocktail — had been questioned over allegations that alcohol had been served to a customer under the age of 18. One source said: “The lad was out of it in the club and had been sick inside. I didn't hear that he was being aggressive in any way.”
A police spokesman said: “We were only able to to trace his parents in England through the dialled numbers we found on his mobile phone. The local medical coroner's report said the youngster apparently choked and suffered cardiac arrest from excessive intake of alcohol.”
Reports in Greece suggested that earlier in the evening Matthew had been at other bars drinking a blend of several strong spirits and a dose of industrial alcohol.
Called “bombs” by the Greeks, the concoctions are blamed for sending many young tourists to hospital. They are usually a blend of several strong drinks and a dose of industrial alcohol. The drinks often produce dizziness and headaches and impaired judgment, and in large quantities can be life-threatening.
Several bars on the island are being investigated by the police as part of a crackdown on the behaviour of British tourists.
Greek television reported the incident while showing footage of drunken young Britons having sex in the streets and on the beaches of Zakynthos. Commentators called for a stricter crackdown on the antics of lager louts on the Greek islands.
Laganas has been at the centre of growing concern about the behaviour of the estimated 200,000 British tourists who visit the island each year. Two couples caught having sex on the beach last week were sentenced to 20 days' imprisonment which they were allowed to avoid by paying £200 fines.
The resort, the largest on the island, is situated on the southwest coast of Zakynthos. The island, also known as Zante, is part of the Ionian island chain which lie off mainland Greece's east coast.
Two summers ago the island's MP demanded that “shameless Britons” should be extradited and or face prosecution after revellers were photographed playing sex games and taking part in orgies in bars and on beaches.
Last week the Foreign Office said that more British women were raped in Greece each year than in any other holiday destination, mostly by British men.
In recent years British youngsters have made up three quarters of tourists. However, many bars and restaurants have reported that fewer Britons are visiting the islands this summer because of the credit crunch and have complained that they have been replaced with East European youngsters who spend less on alcohol.

'in large quantities can be life-threatening.' If it was know the side effects 'bombs' can cause why was it avaible to a 17year old boy?
Becuase that what he was a young boy out to have a good time with his mates they shouldnt have allowed this to happen
manda, sheffield,
Got back frm 2 wks in Laganas on 27th June, we are 23,this was our 6th visit to greek islands, behaviour we saw in the resort of laganas was unbelievable, everyone consuming far to much alcohol, racing on quads and having no respect for the locals.Alcohol was ALL watered down on laganas strip.

It's cheap, it's readily available and it kills, fast or slowly. Tell me again why alcohol is fine but cannabis is a class b drug?

A "great sence of humuor"? Requiescat in pace!
Dave, Preston,
My thoughts with the decease love ones, I cannot image the lose they feel. But what is going on with British tourist, GOA, Italy (I am not talking about Meredith), London stabbings, and now Greece? We can blame the host nations but eventually British tourists will need to evaluate they behaviors.
