This is the Belgrade flat that Radovan Karadzic called home while he was in hiding. Several items stand out:
— Among the mess on the table there are three mobile phones. Dr Karadzic was presumably using these to help him to avoid eavesdropping and surveillance
— The cigarettes are strange for a man who professed to want to live to the age of 120
— The certificate poking out on the edge of the table is from the Humane Organisation of Parapsychologists, named after Mina Minic, Karadzic’s spiritual mentor. The symbol, like a large arrow, is a water-divining tool
— On top of that the newspaper headline announces the discovery of “the real Dragan Dabic”, whose identity Dr Karadzic allegedly stole, in Ruma, Vojvodina – although this was probably put there by police after the arrest
— The box of golden objects are “Wellbeing Amulets”. The large Vodavoda bottle is a brand of mineral water, but it appears to contain homemade plum brandy
— On the chair are more amulets – “Four-Angled Spiral Amulets” – as well as coins, pens and a chess clock under a black notebook
— The newspaper in the centre of the picture is Pravda, a hardline nationalist Serbian paper
— Under the television are CDs and books, including a book on Tibet. Dr Karadzic’s library included books by Ernest Hemingway, Simone de Beauvoir and Slobodan Milosevic. One book in his possession was entitled Radovan Karadzic and Ratko Mladic: Why They Are Not Guilty
