The public will be able to view the thousands of pages of evidence amassed by Portuguese detectives into the disappearance of Madeleine McCann when the police files are released today.
The 20,000-page dossier is expected to include witness statements and interviews with Madeleine’s parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, as well as other evidence collected by detectives since Madeleine disappeared in Portugal 14 months ago. However it is not known if the entire file or only parts of it will be made available.
Madeleine has not been seen since May 3, 2007, when she vanished from her family’s holiday apartment in the Algarve resort of Praia da Luz while her parents were having dinner with friends at a nearby restaurant.
The police files into her disappearance are being made public under Portuguese law after the lifting of the period of judicial secrecy in the case.
Lawyers for Madeleine’s parents Gerry and Kate McCann, both 40, from Rothley, Leicestershire, were formally given access to the police files last week.
The McCanns were last month officially cleared by Portuguese authorities after being named as arguidos, or formal suspects in the disappearance of their three-year-old daughter.
Their lawyers are studying the mammoth dossier for fresh leads that the couple's private detectives can follow up in their own search for their daughter.
Madeleine’s disappearance sparked an international manhunt and worldwide media attention, and her deeply religious parents were even granted an audience with the Pope, who blessed a photograph of the missing girl.
However on July 21 Portuguese prosecutors announced they were shelving the case due to lack of evidence, although it can be reopened if credible new evidence comes to light.
At the time the McCanns and Algarve resident Robert Murat, a British property developer, were told they were no longer formal suspects in Madeleine's disappearance.

i hope the mccanns get litter maddy back soon i hope and pray for them she come home soon to her mum and daddy
sally westhead, liverpool,
Just to point out that a single mother went out for a few drinks with a friend and left her two children,( under the age of 10) this happened about ten years ago in Britain.
There was a fire and if I remember rightly one child die, the mother was prosecuted for neglect.
Need I say more.?
David Mustard, sunderland, England
Well Mr and Mrs McCann gave the impression they were religious. The public supported them by donating to the Fund people who could ill afford to contribute did so thinking the money would be used to "find Madeleine". I think the report should be made public - all of it. Dogs don't lie.
Carol, Edinburgh, Scotland
As regular Times readers my husband and I await the details of the forensic and contradictory statement evidence of the Tapas 9 being published in the British press. The evidence of Eddie the cadaver dog and Keela the blood sniffer dog in the McCanns' apartment was a turning point in the case.
Jane, Crawley, West Sussex
Perhaps the Times would take a lead in reviewing the information that is now in the public domain and show readers that investigative journalism is still alive and well? There are some worrying aspects to this case, including a statement made by two UK doctors about a 2005 Mccann holiday.
alison , london,
They were never granted an audience with the Pope. They joined thousands of others in St Peter's Square, and the Pope passed them by, pausing in front of Madeleine's picture to bless it.
The Vatican Website removed the link to the Find Madeleine Website as soon as the pair were made Arguidos.
Bill Dafia, Blyth Bridge, Scotland
I agree with Pamela that a section of the public should not be critical of Gerry and Kate McCann, all they ever did was to leave all their children alone unattended and unsupervised while they were out enjoying themselves wining and dining with friends.
So please do not blame them for what happened
Mike, Brighton, UK
I just want to endorse everything stated above by Liz, London. All through I have been appalled at the way Kate and Gerry have been treated by the media, as well as by a section of the public so quick to enforce their own sad judgements on the couple. We can be both lucky and unlucky in this life.
Pamela, Harrow, UK
I really do wonder, reading some of these comments, just what the McCanns have done to deserve this ever-continuing repetition of rumour, gossip and downright lies about them What is to do with anyone here why Kate refused to answer questions (incidentally it was because her lawyer told her not to). If the police are satisfied, then the nay-sayers should just shut up and get themselves a life.
Liz, London,
All people wants to know the facts, but as long as Clarence Mitchell is in "charge", the english people wil only get to know what he wants.

I sincerely hope that those who have the ability, recourses and courage will be a voice for the true victim in all of this and find a way to bring justice for Madeleine.
Sharon, Sunderland, UK
God Bless the McCann family, especially Maddie! I pray every day for that family and hope that somehow, some way, someone will come to their senses and let this little girl be returned to her family. Imagine living in the hell they have been for the past year and a half ??
Jennifer, Ontario, Canada
The McCann's now have access to the files. It is hoped that they will televise their own reconstruction from the evidence in the file. While their status has been lifted they are not cleared and Mrs McCann still has 48 questions to answer.
kezwalk, Perth, Australia
I hope very soon, we get to hear the truth about what happened to this little girl.
Sarah, Harrogate, UK
I just wish in all my heart of hearts that this beautiful little girl Madeleine is found, hopefully alive.I hope this dossier will jog some-ones memory, it just needs that one breakthrough.
One way or another I wish she will be found.
Irena, leeds, uk
may I kindly point to the fact that they are not "cleared". only in a trial you can be cleared. they had not enough proof to go to court.
I think this is a very important difference.
lmd, rhine, germany
I look forward to The Times and other responsible newspapers reporting on these files in detail.
Some extremely fishy things have been going on in this investigation, particularly the role of Leicestershire Police who withheld witness statements from the Portugese Police for over 6 months.
James Noble, Letchworth, UK
Lets hope that the files will throw some light on what happened to Madeleine as the things Ive read in the press are far from informative. Whatever happened I hope Madeleine is in a better place and that one day her body might be recovered.
John, Cardiff, UK
The silence from the mccanns has been deafening since their arguido status was lifted. I was under the impression that they could not talk about the case because of judicial secrecy, well that has now been lifted, so how about some responses to the many unanswered questions and inconsistencies?
Jay, newcastle, UK
i would like to know why the mccanns have been so very quiet since they were no longer aguidos'what are reasons that kate chose not to answr 48 questions and will the pulic who are ot online have a chance to view the portugese reports, i can think of a hundred questions bu don't have the space here.
linda , bedfordshire , u.k
I hope that we will now see some detailed reporting on this case, including known facts and information relating to the forensic evidence. Most importantly I would hope that the public could learn more details about Madeleine's last day in the hope that someone's conscience will be jogged.
Florence, Cardiff, Wales
I hope facts from the files will be extensively reported. I can do without bias, spin and opinion - we have been fed this since day 1 of this story. Let the facts speak - Madeleine deserves this.
patricia, Taunton, UK
There has been a seemingly endless cacophany of spin, speculation and misinformation regarding this case ever since poor Madeleine first went missing. The sooner the actual facts relating to the investigation are released, the better.
Kate, Suffolk,
We must applaud the Portuguese AG for taking this quite unusual step in the case of a minor, to release the files.
According to the Portuguese Press, 1000 media requests for a copy of the DVD compilation have been made. I do hope that The Times is on the list.
Murray, London,
maybe we should all withhold our opions, until all the facts are in.
carolyn dietz, attalla, AL, USA
At last those that felt unable to answer questions will be free to do so. Producing the files will help to make the case more transparent, which can only be a good thing as so many people donated to the fund, these people deserve answers to any questions that they have.
Dove, Weymouth, United Kingdom
Lets hope the British press are going to publish some of the very interesting information now it's in the public arena. Details of the forensic evidence; details of the Tapas 9 statements which conflict with independent witnesses and the 48 questions Kate McCann refused to answer; just as a start.
Jane, Crawley, West Sussex
Odd that Kate refused to answer the question 'Why were you certain she had been abducted' when she told Womans hour that she couldnt answer that one because of secrecy laws!
I wish the UK press would let all this through now!
Ian Larman, Maidstone, UK
I want to read about the police interviews with the parents; the full version of what the 'Guernsey' dogs turned up; and why they and their friends are not interested in reconstructions.
I want the UK & Irish papers to give me all that information and not have bits of it paraphrased by a PR person.
Tara, Cork, Ireland
I agree that Madeleine deserves the truth, but lets not forget the thousands of people worldwide that contributed millions to the Find Madeleine Fund do they not deserve to know if they have possibly contributed to a canard?
M. Erlin, Hertforshire, England
Please report and investigate question N° 41 Kate McCann was asked and refused to answer to the portuguese police.
Why did the Leicestershire Police refuse to supply vital evidence?
Why did Brian Kennedy interfer with important witnesses?
So much to do, so little investigative journalism..
Johanna, Berlin, Germany
Madeleine deserves the truth. So do all the children who stay awake in bed, fearing that the "abductor" who "took" her may take them too: in 90% of missing children cases, close family members are involved- strangers, in only 4%.
Helen, Greece,
I for one think the public should be able to have access to the reports.....we the public have been following this sad story from day one...only to have snippets given out......or the same old tune of ...we can't discuss that right now....well actually...now we all can.
Guy, newcastle, australia
The child vanished seemingly into thin air.
The parents quickly launched a "fighting fund" and hired expensive high profile lawyers.
They hired a team of Spanish private detectives who have little or no previous experience in tracing missing persons.
Why?
Linda, Montpellier,
Mr.& Mrs.McCann have NOT been cleared, insufficient evidence PRESENTLY exists for a Portugese prosecution.
The cadaver and human blood dog both reacted POSITIVELY to the McCann's apartment, the hire-car and MRS.McCANN'S CLOTHES.
Are YOU thinking what I'M thinking ?
Justice for Madeleine.
Kaz , Newark, UK
Perhaps now we will see in UK newspapers some of the interesting detail that has been emerging in the Portuguese press since Amaral's book came out last week? Amaral was the detective in charge of the case until he was removed. He does not believe the child was abducted.
Steve, Guildford, UK
