World leaders have condemned Russia’s attacks in South Ossetia, warning Moscow that failure to withdraw risks damaging international relations.
The White House said Russia’s military action in the Georgia was “dangerous and disproportionate” and that any further escalation of the conflict could harm bilateral ties.
“We have made it clear to the Russians that this will have a significant long term impact on US-Russian relations,” Jim Jeffrey, deputy National Security Adviser, said.
In Britain, a spokesman for Gordon Brown said: "We are urging an immediate ceasefire to the fighting in South Ossetia and calling for a resumption of direct dialogue between the parties."
Bernard Kouchner, the French foreign minister who has been dispatched to the region by President Sarkozy, forecast a Balkan-style war if neither side backed down. He said that such violence was “unacceptable at the doors of Europe” and reminded him of “other recent conflicts that have torn our continent apart”.
John McCain, who has made foreign policy the centrepiece of his campaign and been a constant critic of Moscow, said: "Tensions and hostilities between Georgians and Ossetians are in no way justification for Russian troops crossing an internationally recognized border.”
Obama accused Russia of escalating the crisis “through it's clear and continued violation of Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity” and called on it to stop its bombing campaign.
Former Soviet bloc countries also rallied to Georgia’s cause. Polish President Lech Kaczynski said interference in domestic Georgian matters was “unacceptable and could lead to tragic consequences".
Ukrainian officials, meanwhile, warned that their country could bar Russian navy ships, being deployed off Georgia’s coast, from returning to their base in the Crimea.
Pope Benedict, holidaying in northern Italy, professed his “profound anguish” over the fighting, which has “already caused many innocent victims and forced a great number of civilians to leave their homes”.
“I invite the international community and the countries with most influence in the current situation to make every effort to support and promote initiatives aimed at finding a peaceful and lasting solution,” the pontiff added in his Sunday address.

First Chechnaya, now Georgia, who's next? Putin dreams of world dictatorship!
Wayne Dawson, Melbourne, Australia
To Horace - fyi both Russia and Georgia are orthodox countries, so Pope's anguish is kind of irrelevant since there are Patriarchs on both sides who can do much mpre than anti-russian and anti-georgian crusade inspirators and they do.
Saakashvilli clutched to a templar's flag but not his citizens.
Mariya, St.Petersburg, Russia
At least we all have our freedom to express what we think. Unfortunately most British politicians including the PM don't. They have to be seen to be supporting the US irregardless of the facts or what they truely think
Would the US have allowed a the Warsaw Pact to sit on her doorstep?
Fred, London,
Reading comments from US I see the most dangerous thing in the world is not nukes but stupidity of amirican philistine. They know nothing but always are ready to judge. Do you know that immediately after Gergia had struck Tskhinvali Russia initiated cease-fire in UN. Guess who did block the debates
Alex, Vladivostok, Russia
Russia reacted so quickly because she prepared 58 army to the invasion of Georgia and deliberately provocked Georgia to attack Osetia. And 2000 killed people is just BIG LIE. Russians used to do that very well.
Leyla, Baku, Azerbaijan
Russia reacted so quickly just because Russian peacekeepers were there to keep the balance and to prevent the aggression of Georgia. I can't understand why some people can't realize that US and UK misrepresent the whole situation and forget that it was Georgia who bombed innocent civilians.
Peter, St.Petersburg, Russia
Fair play to Russia. Apart from the 'genocide' perpetrated by the Georgians, there is the critical matter of Western double standards. Kosovan independence was supported by the West. The S Ossetians should be supported to cecede from Georgia, any other response is pure hypocrisy.
JH Wardle, Lancashire, UK
When the Americans can explain what they are or were doing in Kosovo, Vietnam, Grenada, Afghanistan, Iraq and so forth (not in any order here..) then the 'world leaders' acquire the right to ask the Russians what they are doing in S Ossetia.
Max, Portsmouth, UK
Russia had this planned in advance. The invasion was made too quickly. Kick Russia out of the G8. There is no excuse for Russia to attack such a tiny county. Why wasn't the U.N involved,. Russia made the U.S. go before the U.N. 11 times to invade Iraq? Russia's veto power revoked!!!
Sue, Louisiana, USA
Good you bring up the subject of difference between the right for self determination of Kovoso, Osetia, Abkhasia, and why some can other can't do it, dear Alex from Moscow. Let me add one more to your list. How about Chechnia?.. By the way, we're all very happy Russians have not bombed Tbilisi..yet.
Chris, Cracow, Poland
The "world leaders" quoted "condemning" Russia turn out to be just US officials and the US satellites Poland and Ukraine.
Calling US politicians and a few imperial vassals "world leaders" is invalid. If this war has proved anything it is that the arrogant US empire is NOT planetary dictator.
Richard Cheeseman, Wellington, Aotearoa/NZ
Those who say that Russia's to blame for the war please tell me the difference between the right for self determination of Kovoso, Osetia, Abkhasia, why some can other can't do it. By the way US bombed Belgrade, russi dod not bomb Tbilisi... sense the differense?
Alex, Moscow, Russia
Bravo, Alan, UK.
With all stupidity of Georgian leader, Russia unleashed the war against sovereign state. But I like your parallel, Kosovo is the worst western political mistake in last 40 years. Glad some share the same opinion.
amm, Israel,
Now we can see how Obambi's "talk, talk, talk" will work.
Go get 'em, you UN tigers of morality, peace and love! Rah!
A mad dog understands only a bullet. Too bad we nice people can't stomach the thought.
Harry Schell, Monrovia, USA
well said alan from london
m, toronto, canada
Pity the same leaders who condemn Russia didn't condemn Nato for invading Serbia and Israel for invading Lebanon
alan, london, uk
Russian Federation is not defending itself, but invaded and bombed sovereign country.
R. Federation is dangerous aggressor, who has to be stopped.
LI, London,
Russia is violating Georgia's sovereignty, I don't care how threatened you feel. Georgia also has the right to defend itself and it's people...last I checked you don't just waltz into a country and think you can just do whatever you please, It's that kind of attitude that got Hitler started!
reziko, New York, USA
russia has a right to defend its people, one person said 98% of the people in the area are russians so i dont see why russia should stop when most of the people there are russians. but that dont stop no one does it? wars just a way to say i need help, you stert a war you need help.......
cameron, whangarei, new zealand
Russia has every right to defend itself, and I think it's about time that they started taking action against some of these aggravators who threaten them. By the way, not ALL Americans are complete idiots. Most people I know feel that this is completely justified and that "Western Leaders" are wrong!
Chris Ellian, Duluth, United States
Oddly enough , the whole case has almost nothing to do with Georgia and Ossetia themselves, which are just pawns in big political game. The meaning is that Putin is showing extreme disregard to the US, official Georgian ally. This conflict is carefully arranged and perfectly timed provocation of Msk
Elena, Moscow, russia
Russian peacemaking forces as well as innocent civilians were attacked by Georgians. That's the fact. Hopefully Americans and Europeans aren't idiots to deny that. Russia has the right and obligation to defend its citizens (98% of people in the area are RUSSIAN citizens). Russia is not Yugoslavia.
Yuri, Omsk, Russia
US wanted Russia to be a Yugoslavia. It is NOT. We have the right to defend our citizens (98% of the people in the area are Russian ciotizens). If Saakashvili wanted war, he got it. I wonder, by the way, what EU forces are doing in Kosova? Is it not the same what Russian troops were doing in Osetia?
Yuri, Omsk, Russia
These world leaders have to say what they have to say.. Imagine Obama trying to explain why this attack is logical and well thought through action.. Dumb and uninformed people wanna hear simple solution - People die = BAD - "I condemn that"..
Jordan, Vancouver , Canada
I wouldn't worry about Scottish independene. They did claim their independence at one point, then later gave it back to England. People are condemning Russia's actions in South Ossetia, but those same people have done or would do the same thing in the same position.
Hal, Heidelberg, Germany
keep in mind that practically all georgians earn one's living in Russia, Georgia is very poverty-ridden state and georgians' material well-being depends on Russian-Georgian relations! So, I think Saakashvili hardly cares of his citizens provoking Russia
Ayana, Moscow, Russia
oh mccain, "internal tensions are in no way justification for foreign troops crossing an internationally recognized border", where were you before Iraq, Kosovo, and Vietnam? Oh, wait, you were bombing all three..
did these "world" leaders forget to consider that most of the deaths are on georgia?
Tony, Rochester, US
I wonder what the UK would do if Scotland claims independence, or Canada - in case of Quebec....
Alex, Cheboksary, Russia
World leaders? You mean Western leaders?
Ooh..I forgot. Only the West is the World.
Asia & Africa don't matter.
Typical arrogance..
Rad, Jakarta, Indonesia
I'm sure Putin will certainly consider Pope Benededict's "profound anguish"!
Horace, Florence, Tuscany, Italy
