Ten countries have now ratified the constitution, although only Spain has done so through a referendum.
Seven, including Britain, have yet to hold a referendum.
Six have not yet held a parliamentary vote.
Two, France and the Netherlands, have voted against.
Voted against:
France: (May 29, 2005): President Chirac said: "The decision of France inevitably creates a difficult context for the defence of our interests in Europe."
Netherlands (June 1, 2005): Jan Peter Balkenende, the Prime Minister, said: "It is a clear outcome. Of course I am very disappointed. The government will respect the vote."
Referendum pending:
Luxembourg: referendum on July 10 to go ahead as normal. Luxembourg prime minister Jean-Claude Juncker said last night: “The show must go on."
Denmark: referendum on September 27 to go ahead as normal. “It is clear that we are now in a very serious situation. The government’s point of view is still, however, that Danes should have a chance to vote on the treaty as we know it today and nothing else,” said Prime Minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen late on Wednesday.
