Portugal: referendum due in October, insists that ratification should continue. Diogo Freitas do Amaral, the Foreign Minister, said that Portuguese political leaders have "said and re-said ... that we will carry out a referendum next October, unless very extraordinary circumstances completely alter the process and put all Europe truly on a new path".
Czech Republic: referendum expected in December, but has suggested postponing deadline for ratification. Czech President Vaclav Klaus, an opponent of closer integration, said: “If someone interpreted the French vote result as an exceptional occurrence, they can no longer say this after the Dutch vote result. I think it’s a victory for freedom and democracy in Europe.”
Britain: referendum due Spring 2006, but has called for period of reflection. Jack Straw, the Foreign Secretary, said: "The verdict of these referendums now raises profound questions for all of us about the future direction of Europe." According to Foreign Office sources Mr Straw will tell MPs on Monday that the Bill paving the way for the referendum will be put on ice.
Ireland: no date set for referendum, but says ratification should continue. Dermot Ahern, the Foreign Minister, said that the no vote would slow EU enlargement and could create a "severe" difficulty if other nations follow suit: "It is disappointing but it is not a disaster."
Poland: no referendum date set, and final decision on whether to go ahead with it delayed until after EU summit on June 16. Marek Belka, the Prime Minister, said: "We think that Poland should continue the ratification process. We should give the decision-making power to the people of Poland."
Parliamentary vote:
Belgium Guy Verhofstadt, the Prime Minister, said: "The result should not be considered as a vote against Europe. The French voted against this text of the EU constitution. The motivation of a lot of opponents shows that the French do not want less, but more Europe."
Estonia Andrus Ansip, the Prime Minister, said: "I am not happy about it. The constitution is good for Estonia and good for Europe."
Cyprus: due to ratify this month. "Ratification will go ahead as planned in parliament on the 29th and 30th of June,” said government spokesman Kypros Chrysostomides.
Malta Lawrence Gonzi, the Prime Minister, said he was disappointed that the French had voted "No" but that Malta would stick to its plan to hold a vote in parliament, which is expected to approve the treaty. He said: ""Our ratification process will continue and the Maltese parliament will vote on a motion of ratification in July as planned."
