Josef Fritzl: the 24-year timeline of horror

August 28, 1984 Josef Fritzl drugs and handcuffs daughter Elisabeth before locking her in a cellar under their house in Amstetten, Austria

1988-2002 Seven children are born to Elisabeth. One, a male twin, dies soon after birth. Three are kept in the cellar, three are sent to live upstairs with Elisabeth’s mother and grandmother

1998 Mr Fritzl travels to Thailand. Officials suggest that the family were left with stores of food

April 19, 2008 The eldest child, Kerstin, 19, is admitted to hospital, where suspicious doctors notify police. Police issue an appeal to Elisabeth to return to Amstetten. Mr Fritzl tells police Kerstin had been abandoned outside the house. He releases Elisabeth and her children in the following days

April 26 Police pick up Elisabeth and her father near the hospital and find the children at the house
