Paris alert over estates trouble

Police were on the alert in the outskirts of Paris last night after a second evening of fighting in the area where riots sparked a national revolt on housing estates last autumn.

Eighty youths stoned police stations in Montfermeil and Clichy-sous-Bois and a dozen cars were set ablaze. Six officers were lightly injured and thirteen people were detained.

They included Muhittin Altun, 18, who was badly burnt last October in the incident in an electricity substation that started the riots and in which two of his friends were killed. He has been released on bail, charged with throwing rocks at police officers.

Nicolas Sarkozy, the Interior Minister, promised firm action to halt violence that has raised fears of a further outbreak of serious rioting. 'I won't let chaos be stirred up anywhere in France,' he said.

The opposition Socialists accused him of letting tension fester in the immigrant estates so as to boost his standing with voters. 'Several months after the riots, the minister has undertaken no action to pacify the districts in which the violence erupted,' the party said.
