Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has accused the US of seeking to seeking to hide its failures in Iraq, saying that claims that Iran is arming Iraqi insurgents to target US forces are an attempt by Washington to cover its own mistakes.
In a rare interview with the US programme ABC News, the Iranian President sidestepped accusations that his Government was supplying arms to insurgents in Iraq, insisting instead that his country was against conflict of any sort and calling for the withdrawal of US and other foreign forces from Iraq as the only way to ensure peace.
Asked if Iran was sending weapons into Iraq to kill Americans, Mr Ahmadinejad replied: “We shy away from any kind of conflict and any kind of bloodshed.
“I think that Americans have made a mistake in Iraq and unfortunately are losing, and this is a shame for Americans of course and that's why they are trying to point their fingers to other people.
“We do not want the presence of armed forces in Iraq, foreign armed forces in Iraq. We would like to have the strengthening of Iraq and the stability of the Iraq government… But we think that the US is following another policy trying to hide its defeats and failures and that's why is pointing its fingers to others. This is not a solution to the problem.”
The comments came after the US military claimed that 170 soldiers had been killed in Iraq by sophisticated armour-piercing weapons supplied by Iranian agents acting on behalf of the highest levels of the Tehran government.
Senior officials in Baghdad also claimed yesterday that five Iranians, arrested last month in a controversial raid in Irbil, were members of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps. They said that the group, all carrying false papers, had been caught flushing documents down lavatories and shaving their heads to disguise their appearance. One allegedly had “explosive residue” on his hands.
Several senior Democrats have greeted the claims with scepticism, urging the Bush Administration to move cautiously before accusing Iran of fomenting a campaign of violence against US troops in Iraq.
In the interview, Mr Ahmadinejad said that peace would return to Iraq only when US and other foreign forces left the country, saying: “We are opposed to any conflict and also the presence of foreign forces in Iraq, and that's why we are opposed to the Americans. We tell them leave the country and no other foreigners should be in Iraq, then you see that you have peace.”
He insisted that instability in Iraq was not to Iran’s advantage and that the two countries were “historical friends”.
“Our position for Iraq is very clear: We are asking for peace, we are asking for security, and we will be sad to see people get killed, no matter who they are,” he said.
Asked whether he feared an attack by the US, the President dismissed the possibility as “very low”, but gave warning: “Our nation has made it clear that anyone who wants to attack our country will be severely punished."

Suspension, never, not even for one second! Our nuclear program is not a legal or a technical issue anymore; it has become a political one.
That is the game of politicians. Always surprise. What did Bush and Blaire do? Did they not surprise Saddam and woke him out of his slumber. May be Iran will wake up someone from the sleep. Long time Iran has denied they do not have the nukes. Long time Bush carries on threat one after another and there is no action of anything. So let us chill foe sometime. Then we may have what we do not expect. What is the rush anyway?

This is preposterous. The Shiite militias have been been targeting the Sunni civilians in places like Sadr City and the rest of Baghdad. These same Shiites are the ones who control the Iraqi government of al-Maliki, and up until the last few weeks have only been blamed for sectarian massacres, not fighting the Americans. The insurgency that the US has fought against for the past 4 years has been against Sunnis, who are the enemies of Shiites and Iran. Is the US' intelligence so bad that only after 4 years they've been able to determine the source of the weaponry formerly called "improvised explosive devices"? If they were going to pull this act to cover their failures in Iraq, or if this is just the next step in the administration's plans to execute the new "white man's burden" of spreading democracy in the Middle East, they should have been more clever and off the bat started calling these bombs "Iranian Explosive Devices" back in 2003 to better prepare the US public for their next war.

Maybe the Iranians did not have time to burn the evidence. Maybe the Iranians did it as a last ditch effort to hide the evidence, as they were raided and surprised.

Here we go with another dossier designed to prepare the publice for war. The 'evidence' can only be described as convenient. I just hope the publc does not fall for it a second time.

Not at all is it hard to believe that Iran has a hand in destablizing the middle east. As long as there is a power-hungry extremist in charge (Ahmadinejad), I believe it is safe to follow whatever leads the intel gives us. However, invading, or starting any type of conflict with Iran would be out of line, and any diplomatic way to solve this situation would be best.
Brendan, Orlando,
Mullahs fingerprint in arming the Iraqi insurgency is all over Iraq and Lebanon. Ahmadinejad in footstep with Prophet Muhammad's doctrine aims at killing Jews and anybody who do not agree with Islamic Republic's views.
I think President Bush is finally on the right track. He should have taken care of the Mullahs before he ousted Saddam. There will be no peace in the Middle East as long as Mullahs are in power in Iran. Shame on John Kerry who has been accepting money from Mullahs lobbyists and advocates for dialogue with Iran. Just read Corsi's book Atomic Iran.

I think the Bush adminstration is planting and fabracating evidence to start a war with Iran before Bush leaves office.
And there is nothig, or no one is going to stop him

"Flushing documents down lavatories"? What highly trained military personnel would use such a clearly inefficient, if even viable, method to dispose of incriminating evidence? Even a 10 year old knows that if you try and flush large amounts of paper down a toilet, it is bound to get clogged due to the long lengt of time required for the paper to disintegrate. Surely they would burn or shred paper? How credible is this report? If its an American report, then I must say, not very. Actually, I don't think it is believeable at all.
