SOME of America’s most senior military commanders are prepared to resign if the White House orders a military strike against Iran, according to highly placed defence and intelligence sources.
Tension in the Gulf region has raised fears that an attack on Iran is becoming increasingly likely before President George Bush leaves office. The Sunday Times has learnt that up to five generals and admirals are willing to resign rather than approve what they consider would be a reckless attack.
“There are four or five generals and admirals we know of who would resign if Bush ordered an attack on Iran,” a source with close ties to British intelligence said. “There is simply no stomach for it in the Pentagon, and a lot of people question whether such an attack would be effective or even possible.”
A British defence source confirmed that there were deep misgivings inside the Pentagon about a military strike. “All the generals are perfectly clear that they don’t have the military capacity to take Iran on in any meaningful fashion. Nobody wants to do it and it would be a matter of conscience for them.
“There are enough people who feel this would be an error of judgment too far for there to be resignations.”
A generals’ revolt on such a scale would be unprecedented. “American generals usually stay and fight until they get fired,” said a Pentagon source. Robert Gates, the defence secretary, has repeatedly warned against striking Iran and is believed to represent the view of his senior commanders.
The threat of a wave of resignations coincided with a warning by Vice-President Dick Cheney that all options, including military action, remained on the table. He was responding to a comment by Tony Blair that it would not “be right to take military action against Iran”.
Iran ignored a United Nations deadline to suspend its uranium enrichment programme last week. President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad insisted that his country “will not withdraw from its nuclear stances even one single step”.
The International Atomic Energy Agency reported that Iran could soon produce enough enriched uranium for two nuclear bombs a year, although Tehran claims its programme is purely for civilian energy purposes.
Nicholas Burns, the top US negotiator, is to meet British, French, German, Chinese and Russian officials in London tomorrow to discuss additional penalties against Iran. But UN diplomats cautioned that further measures would take weeks to agree and would be mild at best.
A second US navy aircraft carrier strike group led by the USS John C Stennis arrived in the Gulf last week, doubling the US presence there. Vice Admiral Patrick Walsh, the commander of the US Fifth Fleet, warned: “The US will take military action if ships are attacked or if countries in the region are targeted or US troops come under direct attack.”
But General Peter Pace, chairman of the joint chiefs of staff, said recently there was “zero chance” of a war with Iran. He played down claims by US intelligence that the Iranian government was responsible for supplying insurgents in Iraq, forcing Bush on the defensive.
Pace’s view was backed up by British intelligence officials who said the extent of the Iranian government’s involvement in activities inside Iraq by a small number of Revolutionary Guards was “far from clear”.
Hillary Mann, the National Security Council’s main Iran expert until 2004, said Pace’s repudiation of the administration’s claims was a sign of grave discontent at the top.
“He is a very serious and a very loyal soldier,” she said. “It is extraordinary for him to have made these comments publicly, and it suggests there are serious problems between the White House, the National Security Council and the Pentagon.”
Mann fears the administration is seeking to provoke Iran into a reaction that could be used as an excuse for an attack. A British official said the US navy was well aware of the risks of confrontation and was being “seriously careful” in the Gulf.
The US air force is regarded as being more willing to attack Iran. General Michael Moseley, the head of the air force, cited Iran as the main likely target for American aircraft at a military conference earlier this month.
According to a report in The New Yorker magazine, the Pentagon has already set up a working group to plan airstrikes on Iran. The panel initially focused on destroying Iran’s nuclear facilities and on regime change but has more recently been instructed to identify targets in Iran that may be involved in supplying or aiding militants in Iraq.
However, army chiefs fear an attack on Iran would backfire on American troops in Iraq and lead to more terrorist attacks, a rise in oil prices and the threat of a regional war.
Britain is concerned that its own troops in Iraq might be drawn into any American conflict with Iran, regardless of whether the government takes part in the attack.
One retired general who participated in the “generals’ revolt” against Donald Rumsfeld’s handling of the Iraq war said he hoped his former colleagues would resign in the event of an order to attack. “We don’t want to take another initiative unless we’ve really thought through the consequences of our strategy,” he warned.
This is a calculated and long thought out plan to take ove the oil in the Middle East. It is also just one more step closer to the "One World Government" in which our conciousless President is hoping to be a dictator of more than America! He has already put into place the signing orders to be able to declare Marshall Law any time he so chooses and has stripped us of more rights than the average American knows. We need to wake up people and demand our country back!

Really makes Ron Pauls non interventionist policy sound better and better. We need to follow the constitution and not attack other countries or police the entire world this is insanity

Those Generals and Officers who decide to "just say no" have the majority of support from the American people, in fact if they want to "just say no" right now, we will gladly bring our troops home, and out of harms way, and take care of the American people here at home first and foremost. Our military has our support, and we want you home safe, and well as soon as possible. Follow our Constitution and your conscious, do what is right for America.

The americans have carriers that can make 45 knots, the Iranians have anti-ship missiles than can attain 2,500 m.p.h., so therefore, it is unlikely that the americans, most of whom have sense, homes and families, will attack.

Bush was elected president by blood right after his daddy and ever since the war in Iraq, the bush administration is setting up to go out with a bang and president bush wiil be remembered as the man that declared war on not only terrorist but evil empires and with forces building up in near the borders of iran well then lets just say its gonna happen and i believe it will happen in before he leaves so we are in for one long decade of war.

I feel it is inevitable that the U.S. and Iran go to war because of actions that have already thrown us into it. If/When the war starts Iran will call on its allies (China and Russia) and the US will be destroyed by sheer man power.
Christopher Feeken, Washougal, Washington, USA
I feel if Bush attacks Iran he will disrupt the movement of oil in the Persian Gulf, this would cause major problems for a lot of countries, including the USA.If folks think other countries hate us now wait till Bush attacks Iran. I don't think people relize what this would do to world econmies, this is serious stuff folks.
James Cantrell, Houston, Texas
Our three most likely opposing nations are loosely described as (1) the Islamic States (their national borders are political fiction), (2) China (which will dominate the world economy within 25 years unless we can precipitate and control a petroleum crisis), and (3) Russia (more of a mid-term military threat than an economic threat). We cannot endure or profit from open warfare with either China or Russia. However, true warfare with the Islamic States may be necessary to prevent future Chinese dominance (or at least deterrance) in the Islamic States. We must manage the inevitable world crisis in petroleum supplies. Properly managed, the crisis might lead China's military response north rather than west. A multi-trillion dollar war in the mideast is money (and lives) well spent in contrast with the inevitable loss of control over the upcoming worldwide pertroleum crisis. Sounds evil, but I can't help that.

I seem to remember that Iran was becoming a far more moderate state before the U.S. invasion of Iraq. With each new war the middle east becomes less stable. With each new war we are told our freedoms at home need to be reduced. I would suggest researching the Project for a New American Century, False Flag Terror attacks and then have a good look at Hitlers rise to power and compare that to what is happening now. If there is one more war or disaster Bush can declare his his new "Dirctive 51" powers and the US will become a police state.
John, Baltimore, MD USA
The words spoken by Ahmadinejad make it perfectly clear that he wants Israel destroyed. The evidence suggests that he is building a nuclear device. His words show that he is not sane. The question is "Will the USA, allow the Iranians to arm up with the bomb"? For the sake of the world I hope the USA is able to attack Iran and remove the military infrastructure and the regime.

It's good to see that some in the military have the courage to stand up to the madness of the Bush/Cheney regime. If we hadn't gotten into Iraq to begin with, then Iran would not be so emboldened (or North Korea for that matter). Our involvement in Iraq has already threatened to knock us off the pedastal of global hegemon. Our military is at the breaking point. I've been in--I know. Attacking Iran would really end our term as the sole superpower. But, I guess Bush and Cheney are more concerned with oil profits than national security.
Mary, Bromley, UK
Obviously our politicians haven't learned not to meddle in military operations. If they would leave the war to the generals, this war would of been over long ago. As for people who think that our military is overextended, I disagree. We have an awful lot more soldiers than what we have in Iraq. I'm really not sure how to deal with Iran, but once they have a nuke things are really going to change. You can't bargain with them and you can't believe them. Tough call. We should not be the worlds firemen any more. Want to win this war? GET THE POLITICIANS OUT OF IT, and let the soldiers do what their trained to do. That would also save soldiers lives and civilian casualties in the long run.

i think that this region of the wold needs a real peace. In fact no reason can justifie the dirty war, i hope that all leaders seat on same table and discuss in order to find a solution insteed increasing the conflict.

Thank heavens people in the U.S. miitary have some common sense, totally lacking in the politicos that control them at the moment. They are indeed courageous and I commend them taking this stand and speaking truth to power. Iran is a multi-faceted society that is larger and more complex even than Iraq. It also contains many dissidents (toward their present government) and will eventually turn the leaders around if only left to themselves to work out their own politics. If only this administration would leave all sovereign countries alone. If the erosion of civil liberties continues in this country, soon some Middle Eastern countries will rival us as democratic in decision-making.

I am deeply ashamed and utterly baffled at the nonsense and propaganda that many of the Americans above have stated. I served in the military for 20 years (10 enlisted, active duty Marines, 10 commissioned Army Reserve). These people speak about the use of organized violence as if it was an abstraction - a movie or a video game. I doubt very much that these people ever actually served in the military. If they did I have to say that there is something wrong with them, i.e., that they have flawed personalities, perhaps sadistic, anti-social personalities or perhaps are laboring under deep-seated feeling of grave inferiority. No one who has successfully taken on the leading in the military, i.e., traininig servicemembers for military missions, and then setting out to accomplish a mission and at the same time bearing the responsibility of the lives and welfare servicemembers would speak with such recklessness and bloodthirst. It's all very different, when you find the enemy bleeds red, too.

Question, should we attack Iran or let them follow through with their stated goal of destroying Israel? Carter then Clinton do nothing about terrorism and Democrats in Congress again offer no solutions except, "Can't we all just get along".
Clay Reaves, Bethany, OK
The American people, and the now Democratic congress will not allow an invasion of Iran. Bush is on his way out, and is severely being held responsible for his behavior in Iraq. Americans DO NOT condone the actions of our current President, King George. The people have spoken in our last elections, and GW has no choice but to follow the will of the people, like it or not.
Joie McDonald , Cincinnati, OH , USA
If the USA wasn't so politically correct and stuck to its guns on policy back in the carter administration we would not be having this discussion now about Iran. You cant talk tough if your never going to use the military option, Prez Regan knew this. For some reason in America, people tend to have a short memory.
John, Nashville, TN
Its time for war again. The US military needs confrontation every 4 years to keep the economy rolling. Aging missiles and weapons need to be used up and tested as to make room for new weapons. And because I don't want to lose my job, so let the war begin already!
priyesh, emmaus, pa
I agree with James Nelson, that if USA attack and occupy an-other country without reasons, as you are not the one to tell them how to rule. They are the ones to solve the matters their way and to dicide how to rule. So they would fight back to push out the occupants. The Vietnam war, Iraq and Somalia are examples of it and so on. Dual policy of USA and Injustice towards nations are the only reason of wars, uncertaincy and problems in the world. Nobody is against China, because she never interfere in other countries' affairs
We hope that America may understand this.

As a British admiring American, I am saddened to read your top three letters written obviously by either recent immigrants to the US or those among us who would do us harm. The USA and Great Britain have a long standing partnership among the world's nations and stand together most of the time with shared values. These letters would paint us as warmongers and isolationists and this is far from the truth. Sometimes it is forgotten in Britain that the American people twice elected President Bush and for the most part stand behind his decisions. To hate Bush is to hate over half of the American voters. I think it is time to remember where to take a stand, for freedoms of every kind and against those who would try to destroy our way of life. Surely there are some folks in Great Britain who still remember the battles of WWII and those brave men who sacrificed so much. How will our children grow up with the same opportunities if we forget?

its beyond the rounds of the ridiculous to wage a war against Iran.
its like waging a war against a faith. Bush is incompetent in the human intelligence. We are not ready for a war and there's no physiological reason in invading Iran. We are tired of the propaganda relating issues; there's no adequate source other than baseless issues. Senior Generals must quit if the proposal is not dismisses
Waawenka, Phx, USA/AZ
I as an American would love a military coup. I only hope they do quit and start a wave of resistence in the miliary. Our military men are sacred and they are being slaughtered mercilessly by the fascist dictator Bush. Our shores are naked for attack right now because we are strained on too many war fronts. This is a sure sign of a regime in it's final days as they strike out in too many directions and lose focus. This is the beginning of the end of America if those generals do not quit.
Richard Neva, Norwich, USA NY
You better believe that these guys are not going to stop on their own. Until they are impeached for their crimes they will continue to take America down this path. And, you know that means Iran next.
The only way to stop this destruction of the world, which buy the way is making them all very rich, is to arrest them.
God knows of all their crimes and we know about quiet a few ourselves.

Pres. Bush and his "buddies" have alreadly messed up the U.S. and Iraq. All the damage they have caused will plague us for years to come.
It would be insane to attack Iran. Not only are our armed forces no longer equipped to fight a big war, but by attacking Iran, it would likely bring on a horrible war of the Muslilm countries against the U.S. We would have no allies this time.
Circumstances now appear to point to the Bush/Cheny plan to see that an incident is provoked whereby they can claim that Iran attacked our forces and use this as an excuse to attack them with our air force.
We must ALL do everything we can to prevent this insane plan from happening.

Chrismm, did I read you correctly? You said generals who are hesistant to follow orders should be decommisioned without retirement benefits? Are you a soldier? Do you know what goes on in yhe mind of a soldier engaged in a war? Generals are educated people and they have conscious! They think and and care for those soldiers under their command. It is not right to simply seat in a house of power no matter it's colour and order killing of innocent people simply because you want to achieve a certain aim thereby endangering the life of your own people the more as against benefiting their lives. No you are wrong. This is a war that must not be fought!
Salisu Ibrahim, Lagos,
I love it when people rewrite WWII history and leave out the 18 Million Russians that died to contain the Axis Nations. All of the participants at Yalta helped win WWII plus many others like French and Italian communists networks. No one group was capable of defeating the Axis Nations alone.
If we continue to destabilize the world as the Axis nations did in middle of the Twentieth century, we will soon enough see the collapse of our republic. Imagine America split in half with a Soviet and European Bloc. This is the historical madness our leaders are currently repeating.
Ryan, Bellingham, WA
Our collective confidence in this batch of generals is self explanatory. Generals that are hesitant to follow orders should be decommissioned without retirement benefits.

Everyone forgets, conveniently, that the reason we went in to Iraq was because of Iraq's violations of over 15 UN resolutions. But how resolute was/is the UN, after all? They were making billions with their scams with the Iraqis. So were Germany, France, and Russia.

2) The best choice in my opinion for the Iranian military (if the want to make a huge political statement anyway) would be to wait for bad weather to hinder flight operations over the region and cut the supply routes from Kuwait to Iraq using armor and surround and "hug" the U.S. army in Iraq which would make make air intervention much harder than if the armor were in the open rather than city streets and because of the pocketed, police-action method in which the U.S.'s forces are operating it would make it difficult for them to rally and confront the threat in an organized manner on the scale needed to break out the pocket and re-supply. GB's reaction to this would be interesting indeed... 3) Missile attacks into Iraq and on U.S. warships in the Persian Gulf. It is possible that Iran would attempt both options 1 and 3 at the same time but that would depend on their willingness to deal with both countries at the same time. comments?
John, New Orleans, USA
1) Missile strikes on Israeli military and civilian targets most likely drawing strikes from the Israelis(not sure what the range of their missiles are but I'm assuming they can reach Iran), who will be hesitant to do much more than that after the fiasco in Lebanon. Outside intervention would be the key here in order to prevent further de-stabilization of the region. Much of this depends on the level of Israeli retaliation.
John, New Orleans, USA
From a purely military standpoint, an attack on Iran makes no tactical sense. Even an air strike, which will probably be highly successful in achieving its objectives of neutralizing nuclear and anti-air targets, would be flawed in the scope of military action in the theater. Imagine this: U.S.-Iranian relations come to a head and a strike is launched by the bush administration. Iran will have the option of escalating the action in a few different ways.
John, New Orleans, USA
Why do you think that you are paying $3.oo a gallon for gas?
As our troops are being killed every day in Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as hundreds of Iraqi civilians, the Saudis and the oil barons in the U.S. and Europe grow increasingly fatter and wealthier.
There is no shortage of oil. OPEC determines how much oil will be put on the market and prices rise. As the fear factor goes there goes the nation and the stock markets around the world. Wake up people -we act like sleepwalkers still in a dream state. God help America.

I imagine those who make comments supporting a war with Iran are like Bush and Cheney in that they too have never been under fire, or for that matter, served in the military. Six hundred and fifty thousand Iraqi civilians have die sense our illegal invasion of Iraq. A for greater toll then Sadam's entire rein. But talk is cheap. If you are so hell bent on your glorious war, the marines could use a few good men. Otherwise, grab your chicken and shut the hell up.

Hmmmm, lets see, so far, this war is "for the benefit of mthe "Jewish State", according to Joe in Chicago, a proxy war for Israel, according to allan in Oregon, our soldiers are comparable to Nazis, according to Jeff in Baltimore, and the US is destroying the planet, according to S. Steinman in Michigan. Looks like the Kool Aid is flowing freely today...
Thank God these people aren't running the country - oh, wait; they are - in the House and Senate...
We're toast.

Our Middle East adventure (the latest by a series of Presidents) is surely the most incompetetent operation every carried out. Replacing State Dept. professionals by 25 year old Bush campaign workers to restart an Iraqi government 3 months after the war started simply reflects the level of ignorance and arrogance for which Bush has become famous. The falsehoods for going there have long since been disclosed, but the question of what this country should be changing foreign policy wise is ignored while candidates argue about how to put the toothpaste back into the tube.
The big picture problem is that our country continues to extract 35-40% of global resources for our 5% of the global population, and the 132 countries in which we have 725 military bases (the last 14 big ones in Iraq) are not all that happy to continue this., especially when much of the revenue for such goes to multinational corporations rather than to the countries involved. Major policy changes are essential.

The generalship in this war has been abysmal. It is inexcusable that generals in the most powerful military on earth are fretting and losing their nerve about engaging the ragtag Iranians. We have fought far more dangerous enemies and won in shorter time.
The United States has always produced brilliant generals in war. Where are the Shermans, the Grants, the Pattons and the McArthurs? Has political correctness and "just war" doctrine gelded them or are they just laying low until they get a Commander-in-Chief who knows what he is doing?
Bill Keough, Seattle, WA, USA
The Bush gang---not vets in any sense---use our troops like toilet paper. And the Iraqi dead they don't even consider worth counting! The "reconstruction", with so much unemployment among the Iraqis, was given to line the pockets of Bush/Cheney corporations. LET'S GET THEM OUT OF THERE BEFORE THEY CAN DO ANY MORE DAMAGE TO THE WORLD. Their arrogance is astounding. Just why did Pilosi say that impeachment was not on the table?

I believe there are moral issues to this- "should we"/"shouldn't we", but if we're not capable then its not an issue! Do you agree that the President usually isn't elected with his military ability in mind- rather his stance on moral issues? If our top generals resign, it's because they feel that the US Military is being led to suicide. Whether the "extremists deserve a bullet in the head", or the "innocents need to be spared", I do not know! But if our top generals say we don't have the power to do something, I'm gonna believe them! We shouldn't do it! And if I can't trust our top general's opinions of our military capabilities, who am I to trust? Whether you think Iran should be invaded or not, I'm sure you agree that if our military strategists say its not the most effective way to protect America, we shouldn't do it. In that case, perhaps we should focus our resources on the missile defense system? I'll let them have all the missiles they want... if they can't use them anyway.
AJ P., Wilton, CT
The US has its hands full in two wars right now. I do not think they have the forces to spare to successfully finish a third. Furthermore, I don't think the American public has much faith in the President since the WMD scare didn't pan out. There is less interest in a pre-emptive attack against a country that did not attack us.
Now, there are reasons why continuing the Gulf war was just. Saddam did not honor the conditions for surrender. That's causus bellum. But there are no such conditions in place for Iran.
Michael, Blue Bell, PA
Do you have any idea how many Generals their are in the U.S. If it is true a few will resign so be it, they can give up their 10 to 15 thousand dollar a month retirement. If they can't obey the orders of the Command in Chief, the President of the US, they shouldn't be in the military. I agree with Christopher, the only thing these extremists know is a bullet in the head. I say stop playing around with them, lets bring the full force of the United States on them. I can't believe some of the comments and articles I've read here and in the Russian paper. What has happened to this world, we seem to spend more time and effort fighting each other than fighting the evil forces of this world... Most of Europe, Russia and China are a joke in our efforts. I think we should relocate the UN to one of their countries and stop our 5 billion dollar funding. They can take all their spies with them.. I have served my country and never once I asked why, I just did it as it was my duy....

The only trouble is -- if they do resign, they will be replaced by men who will follow whatever Bush/Cheney

Carlos Silva takes a cheap and ill-informed shot at the French. France lost 10 times as many soldiers in WWI as the US, and suffered more casualties again in WWII, and has always been profoundly aware of the debt it owes to all *three* big Allied powers. Britain was fighting in WWII for two years on its own before the US even bothered to show up, and the Nazis would never have been defeated without the USSR (who suffered 23 *million* dead). The US would never have won without the British, and neither would have won without the USSR. Learn your history!
Will, London, England
The US helped us win WWII, and they are therefore entitled to start WWIII.
Um, no, that's not my opinion, that's just a summary of what certain other people seem to be saying.
Starling, Lancaster,
Ed Chalkley of France, like most French, has a short memory of America's role in WW II when he states that, "the last war American military might won was in 1945 in Europe, with the help of many other now european countries." Whlie America was helped somewhat by other European countries, the truth is that Europe would have never defeated the Germans in both world wars without America's intervention. That's typical of the French. Twice America balied them out with the Germans and the only gratitude we get is a flood of backstabbing, whining. Without America's help in these wars, the French would have done what they do best - SURRENDER.

I don't think Bush seriously intends to attack Iran. What's going on here is brinksmanship of the most irresponsible type. I believe it was Richard Nixon who developed the idea that brinksmanship involves convincing your enemy that you're crazy enough to take an incredibly foolish course of action. Too bad Peter Pace didn't get the memo to stay "on message." The message, presumably, is that the Bush administration is packed with complete lunatics. Unfortunately, that's not too far off the truth.
Troops home now!
Ted R., Madison, Wisconsin, USA
Love how a source close to British Intellegence says 5 Generals would resign. What a joke. Internet blogger liberals don't like President Bush. Now theres something new.
Hear this clearly, Liberals will win the Presidential election, pull out of Iraq, embolden the militant Arab world and America will pay for it. It will take a Republican President to protect our country and hopefully it won't be too late.
The enemy of America is within.

They should assert the the right given in constitution and act accordingly when the government betrays the people of America .
That is why amendment was included . Right to bear arms .
Not resigning - ousting domestic enemies is the solution.

Is " Rex " somebody in Denvers dog ? If presumption was treasonous most of us would have been shot some years ago. "Rex" needs to go walkies more or read the history of his war loving country, the last war American military might won was in 1945 in Europe, with the help of many other now european countries.

I sincerely hope that the Generals would actually resign if Bush orders an attack! Bush is a very dangerous man he believes that he is a King and not a President.
He needs to be impeached immediately because of his saber rattling, and his gross incompetences in brokering a Diplomatic Solution to the impending menace of Iran and its Nuclear Posturing.
Shawn R. Sargent, West Yarmouth, Massachusetts
"Also, to presume that Iran and its allies could challenge American military might is laughable if not treasonous."
Excuse me? It's treasonous to presume? Are you awake? What happened in Vietnam in the 1970s? What about what's happening in Iraq right now? American military might, my ass.
You back a country into a corner and it will fight to the last man.
To presume anything else is idiotic.

It would be insane for the UK to ally with the US if Bush does go ahead with a strike against Iran. This would turn the Arab world completely against the UK and the West in general. The UK should state categorically that Bush does not have UK support, in case Bush has any doubts.
Chris Batty, Poynton, Cheshire, UK
Liberal Americans fail to realize that in Iran there are many who are sympathetic to the American cause of a free democratic belief, supplemented with religious freedom. Iran fails miserably in these endeavors. Also, to presume that Iran and its allies could challenge American military might is laughable if not treasonous.

What an amazinzingly beautiful vision.. A military coup d' état. How sweet would that be in the White House? They will probably send Cheney into an underground, unspecified bunker & let Bush run free amongst his undevelloped redly-colorful creatures..

I have a feeling that this story will never appear in any American newspapers or television news programs, which have practically all become propaganda outlets for the Bush co-conspirators. But I sure would like to be wrong about that.

As pensioner, born into a world of bombs in 1941, and as a father now, with grown-up children of my own, I look back sympathetically on the job my parents had to do in explaining to a newcomer in the world the "interruption to normal services" of a world at war. I didn't have any toy building bricks, but lived near a tip where the rubble from bombing raids was dumped, and that served the purpose as a children's toy.
During my schooldays and my student life, I welcomed the institution of the United Nations, and started to take for granted the ideal of "world peace" . More recently I have become frankly horrified at the cowboy politics of George Bush Jnr, in tearing up the UN Charter and bringing the world to the brink of war. If he had actually read the Charter, instead of tearing it up, he would have realised that Iran is bound by its terms, as much as any other country. Winston Churchill was not afraid to use the military option when our defence demanded it, yet it was he who declared, in a speech in the White House, Washington, in June 1954: "Talking jaw-jaw is always better than war-war."
Edmund Burke, Kingston upon Thames, England
Thank God for Secretary Gates and General Pace. Maybe we finally have some intelligent and reasonable men in the pentagon. Out with the Zionist war mongers. Sorry that our treasonist 9-11 conspirator/war profiteer Vice President was't eliminated in Bagram yesterday. The Israeli-USA war cabal's power is waning. If the IDF or US military launchs on Iran I'm certain we will see plenty of blowback.
Donald Bradshaw, Stone Mountain, Georgia
Iran is not Nazi Germany. Iran may have some hegemonic ambitions, but the Iranian leaders and the people are very different from those in Germany in the 1930's. Iran has some legitimate grievances against the US. The CIA along with MI6 worked to topple a duly elected government in Iran in the early 1950's and then the US helped Saddam in his war against Iran in the 1980's. The US needs to engage in serious talks with Iran. It is encouraging that some high-ranking US military leaders are threatening resignation should the present US administration attempt military action against Iran.
Deborah Brasher, Kent, USA
i've been waiting for a general revolt against this cretan for some time. i was sure it would have been before now. he is so obviously incompetant and no friend of the military...well...all i can say, is about time...(actually i thought we would have had a coup by now)
susan daniel, albuquerque,
I oppose attacking Iran. It is the weakness of the American system that the Congress can not prevent the president from ordering an attack or remove a president for incompetence but I see this article as the most disturbing of a recent disturbing trend. More and more I have been hearing the political opinions of the active members of the armed forces. In our country the military is supposed to play no role at all in politics. The presumption is that the Generals themselves or someone else in the military released this information in an attempt to affect the political process. I hope an investigation is started promptly and whoever was responsible is disciplined. I don't know if it is against the law but it should be. Any generals who were involved should be fired.
Robert Hotchkiss, San Diego, California
At least there is someone in the world who is willing to stand up to these extremists. The talk and commentary I hear regularly from around the world and from the Democrats in this country reminds me of the appeasement policies of Britian and France in the 1930's, and that worked our so well. You cannot negotiate with a group of people who are dedicated to the destruction of the Western world we can only fight them and then dictate terms to them. Since Europe, Russia, and China are unwilling to step up then it will fall to the US again to clean up the mess.
Christopher Humphrey, San Antonio, Texas, USA
When the U.S. attacks Iran, Russia and China will destroy America with a full scale nuclear attack.
Truther, prophecy, United States
People who are even considering the validity of the Bush Administration's pitiful attempts to drum up support for another war that will further bankrupt this nation and continue to denigrate the US in the eyes of the world, should consider this:
Ahmedinejad's support within his own country is faltering. Iran is a democracy, and many of the candidates who support his confrontational stance against the West were voted out by the citizens of Iran in the last election. He is also facing increasing criticism within his own government. It seems to me that democracy is working better there than it is here.

We may not be the only ones with nuclear weapons Danny Boy but we are the only ones who have used them , over and over.
We all need to get rid of our nuclear weapons, Israel included. Only then will we all be safe.

Attacking Iran would be the immoral, against international laws, and total folly and stupidity. It would put U.S. citizens at much greater risk of terrorism and help to spread chaos and mayhem worldwide.
David Lambert, Tacoma, WA
The U.S. "plan" is apparently to shore up our alliance with the Sunni-dominated Saudis by supporting Sunnis in Iraq (which we are apparently secretly doing, despite the fact that Sunni insurgents kill more Americans than other insurgent groups), and then bombing Iran as well with the hopes of installing an American-friendly, Sunni government there too. Apparently the Saudis were our only "friend" in the Middle East, so we invaded Iraq and now might bomb Iran with the idea that all of the Middle East will become Sunni-dominated, and allies with Saudi Arabia and with, of course, the U.S.

It'd be "awesome" is the generals all retired if Beavis & Butthead have their way! Can you imagine initiating a war without your top, experienced soldiers? If Beavis & Butthead proceed with an all-out war w/ Iran anyway can we PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE start talking impeachment??? I'm disgusted that nothing of the sort's happened yet.

As an American whose ancestors fought in the Revolutionary War, I would like to apologize on behalf of my complacent fellow citizens who have ALLOWED this hijacking of our precious liberty to go on, and on, and on. Thank God someone in the Pentagon has the spine to stand up and resist orders that contravene both the letter and spirit of our laws. The United States military is NOT the servant of Dick Cheney and pals' black-bag marketeering. Our country has more than overdrawn its goodwill account with the ancient civilizations of the Middle East, and we won't be able to repay it for hundreds, perhaps thousands, of years to come. WAKE UP, my fellow Americans! Let's take back our OWN government before we worry about reinventing other countries' governments to suit a bunch of COWARDS hiding their seditious activities behind the fig leaf of "national security!"
Paul Revere, Liberty City, Worldwide
I would suggest all those who still (after all the lies about WMD to get us into war with Iraq) believe Iran is a real nuclear threat as show cased by White House again, watch the Movie "Why We Fight" (you can get it from Blockbuster) and just listen to the warning of a caring president of this country 40 years ago (Eisenhower) that warned against the extremely huge military industrial complex in US will have to make excuse for war to sustain!
Robin, Los Altos, CA
The US attacks whomever she wishes and threatens that she will allow no other power to challenge her hegemony until the end of time. We are still waiting to see the weapons of mass destruction that the US swore in 2003 Iraq had ready to launch in 45 minutes. Can we trust the allegations and aggressive noises of the Bush administration? Iran has all legitimate right to develop nuclear energy technology and to defend herself against an imperialist warmongering US administration. The generals have seen the abyss and they understand the tsunami of hatred for America that will overwhelm Americans the world over. They are unwilling to gamble the lives of their soldiers unlike the Lunatic in the White House
amengeo amengeo, toronto, canada
I cannot believe that the Congress (whatever its makeup) has failed to impeach the President and Vice (!) President for all the overt and all the covert misdeeds he has perpetrated on the American people! What more does it take? Civil liberties abridged continually, Generals vowing to quit en masse, people against the present two wars (Afghan and Iraqi) . Now he threatens war with Iran...which we did not do even when Iran held over 50 American citizens hostage for over a year! For God's sake DO SOMETHING!
Helen Kerwin, Clearwater, Florida
It doesn't matter what we do or say, Iran and others will have nuclear weapons. What we need is international cooperation preventing WMD from extremists. Then maybe we can focus on international efforts to save the planet. Furthermore, we should get our navy out of the Persian Gulf before we have one of our ships sunk and we feel the need to retaliate. (We don't need another"Remember the Maine.") Also, we need to remove our military from the Middle East as soon as we can with promises of aid to repair the infrastructure damage we have caused - as long as there is peace there.
B Parent, Sunnyvale, CA
We have a very sad state of affairs when our top military officers would refuse an order from the command-in-chief.
So I guess we should all make like Neville Chamberlain and let Mahmoud Ahmadinejad have his way. He has made it perfectly clear that he wants Israel wiped out.
I really wish the US would not do anything, but I realize that is not in our best interest. Being the only superpower, it is our responsibility to stay fully engaged. Such is the price of being number 1.
Someone asked why should we be the only ones with the bomb. Well honey, we aren't and if you don't understand the dangers of nuclear proliferation, then you're going to be in for rude awakening when a bomb goes off in the US. Hopefully no one you love will be killed.
Danny S., Plano, TX
Who didn't see this coming? It's clearly the only choice now for the Bush Administration. The war drags on while the Bush Approval Rating Plumets. Even after Sadaam's execution resistance seems stronger than ever in Iraq. Iran appeared in the news not to long ago for hosting a Holocaust Denial convention. The government wants us to believe that these people are truly crazy and that they need to be disposed of. The desicration of another Middle Eastern country would green-light a need for more troop/a draft which is just what Bush has wanted for a while. Not to mention his approval would obviously go up, as it tends to when the US invades another country. And there's only about a year and a half left so why not reek some havoc? When will it end?
Sheridan Lomar, Filadelphia,
"Iran needs to be stopped from getting the bomb". You pansy-asses need a new hobby other than worrying about the sky falling---"Oh were all going to get killed by people who don't love freedom?" Don't you see, moron, that what is happening with regards to a "build up of support for war against Iran", is the same B.S. "strategery" that the Bushies used to start the bogus war against Iraq. What will it take to get you to see the truth, that you are one of seemingly millions of idiots that remain fooled in perpetuity?

The Neo Con ideas for the Middle East have landed us in a disaster that will take generations to resolve in terms of world peace. If only the Supreme Court had not deprived the election winner in 2000, Al Gore;from taking office-nothing on this scale of catastrophe would have happened.Let·s hope he or Obama will take office soon and sort this mess out.

Im not saying we need to invade Iran right now , but how much talking will be done after Iran gets a nuclear bomb.
U people need to get your heads out of the sand. There will be talking after they get the bomb , and we will be doing most of the listening. The useless/powerless UN has handed out more worthless papers/dribble against Iran to no avail. Backbone is what is needed and is what is lacking. Im sorry , but its the only thing the world understands. Talking has been done , and the only people ignoring the talking are the Muslim nations.

Memories are short. It seems that hardly anyone in America has a real sense of history, or remembers Eisenhower's farewell address in which he warned of the consequences of letting the new military-industrial complex (necessitated by WWII) gain too much influence over domestic affairs... especially if a president with little knowledge of the military was allowed to be swayed by the financial interests of militant industrialists.
That there are high-level military commanders unwilling to jeopardize our nation's security by playing pawns to a chicken-hawk chief and his "defense contracting made my millions" second in command gives me hope.
Matt, Quincy, USA/MA
I feel I must apologize for the rude chauvinism displayed by many of my fellow Americans. To characterize our support and great sacrifice during two world wars as "saving your ass" is disrespectful as well as crude.
If the present administration were to pursue such a foolhardy path, I would hope that the generals would resign. However, let's be realistic: military chains of command are resilient and their acts would be largely symbolic.
To the concept of the Iranians attempting to hasten the arrival of the twelfth imam, I would respond that our President is a conservative Christian who believes in Armageddon. If it's all the same to you, I would rather have the Armageddonists meet the imamists diplomatically. It would be far to easy to "push the button" if this became a military conflict.
Eric Fisher, Groton, MA
To S. Adams:
It is not a "lack of will" these generals show but the careful judgment of professional military commanders. The fact that they have broken their customary silence shows the gravity of the situation. Also, the American president does not and never has had the right to declare war: only Congress has that privilege. The president has military power, but the American people must have a say in any action as drastic as a full-fledged war. President Bush has circumvented this before, but after the debacle of our ill-planned invasion of Iraq there is no possible way the legislature will allow him free reign with Iran. We need to have a clear and viable strategy as well as a real rationale before we make any attack on an extremely powerful sovereign nation with potential nuclear capability. At the moment we are still fully engaged in Afghanistan and Iraq. Until those regions are stabilised, we cannot afford another military engagement.
(PS: I live in Scotland, but I'm American.)
Alyssa, Edinburgh,
This is a telling point from inside the Pentagon. The administration has not been acting in the best interests of the country militarily for some time now, and the generals are seeing this firsthand. This is not the sign of revolt, but an attempt to negotiate with the White House. Bush reacts to such pressure from time to time, but he is at least being put on notice that enough is enough and that new wars are not an option. We have to endure this fiasco for a little less than 2 years. I think that the entire world will breathe a little easier when Bush, and especially Cheney, are out of office. Maybe, people will talk openly with and trust the united States again. The damage done to my country is unspeakable by people who care for nothing but power and money.
Paul N., Philadelphia, USA
From what I gather, it's a very small number of brass threatening to resign over this. I say let them, but be sure to take away and benefits they might have, as suggested above.
Iran needs to be stopped from getting the Bomb, and all this useless talk is only buying them the time they need to develop the 'Islamic Bomb' they are so keen on. I hope President Bush has the guts to do something about this before he leaves office.
Sean, Halifax, Canada
George W. Bush is the biggest threat to America and to the world. If the Republicans weren't covering for him, I have no doubt he would be well on his way to impeachment. He is the worst president in the history of the United States, and one of the worst world leaders of all time.
Mark, Minneapolis, MN, USA
The Bush Junta has been planning to attack Iran and take over its oil fields for more than a decade. Read the NeoCons' "Project for a New American Century." They started early on with the "Axis of Evil" saber-rattling, and created an utter disaster on Iran's border, in Iraq, to make Iran fearful and to provoke it to seek nuclear weapons for its own protection. Iran has invaded no one! It has shown no imperial intentions. Its people are just terrified, and who can blame them? The US/UK/Israel destroyed Iran's democracy back in 1954 and inflicted the Iranian people with 25 years of torture and oppression under the horrible Shah of Iran. They have no reason to trust us. The American people do not agree with Bush policy. 84% oppose any U.S. participation in a widened Mideast war. We have suffered a fascist coup--two stolen elections. We agree with the generals. Stop these madmen!
Mary Pjerrou, Elk, California, USA
I'd like to know who the hell these Generals are.
Note to Suresh:
If you don't feel equal to western nations that's something you might want to look inwardly and examine how you feel about yourself.
Carly, Irvine, CA
I do not think a war with Iran is plausible. For starters, how much more can the American military handle in the Middle East? Troops are exhausted, have low moral, and many are ready to come home. Congress (eventhough chances are slim) just might cut off the funding, leaving no choice but to cut and run. The White House brought America into a war that was based on false facts, ignoring the truth and the majority of us Americans are sorry to say, embarrassed and fed-up. Its a spiraling, downward fall towards an already humaritarian catastrophy.
The fact of the matter is, when US generals are willing to resign in the event of an order to attack Iran, shows the arrogance and stupidity of the Bush Administration. Bush and his cronies can only go so far before power is taken from their own hands. Sadly enough, this hasn't happened and more than likely wont.
At the end of the day, if Iran is attacked, we can only hope and pray this doesn't lead to another world war.
A. Jump, Norfolk, Virginia
The Declaration of Independence states that if our government grows too tyrannical, then the American people have every right to remove said government. Our country is ruled by 'Big Business', 'Big Money', and 'Big Church'. Maybe it's time that we, the people who are fed up with this proto-fascism, take up arms and march on Washington DC. Our politicians need to be toppled, lest we repeat the mistakes made by Germany back in the 1930s.
Harvey Henkelman, Brandon, FL, USA
OK! What will you people do when Islamic Extremist Terrorism slaughters your brothers and sisters in your hometown? Try to pacify them and maybe if you don't make them mad, they will go away? Well, friend, that won't happen! You spineless jellyfish should wake up and defend yourselves and know that these people want to rule the world and force their religious extremism on you and us and all the rest of the world. Don't think that America doesn't have the might and the will to defeat these evil people. Won't you help defend yourselves? Why can't you see the world as it actually is and support the cause of freedom? Didn't you study your history? Your teachers didn't teach you about Hitler and Stalin and Mussolini and what could have happened if they had taken over all of Europe? Come on friends, get a grip on reality before it's too late for you! Iran will furnish nuclear weapons to terrorists then what? Goodbye London, Paris, Brussels, Madrid, Berlin, Vienna, Rome? You get the picture???
Gerald McFry, Rome, GA
Where do you Brits get off criticizing our President? We whipped your ass in the Revolution, whipped it again at Baltimore in 1814 & New Orleans in 1815, saved your ass in two world wars, and became the Leader of the Free World while your empire fell apart. You ignored your own voice of reason, Winston Churchill, for the feel-good dribble of Neville Chamberlain (Churchill IS the greatest person ever produced by the English-speaking people of the world), and sent Montgomery to command your troops (he spent more time in front of a mirror than understanding military tactics). For more than 200 years you made sport of us over here in 'the colonies', however, who comes to save your upper-crust ass in time of peril? By the way, don't forget where Churchill's mother came from; Jennie Jerome was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, USA.

There is alot more baggage here than at first discernable.
These generals have come up the ranks during the 8 Clinton years of doing nothing. Then they were unceremoniously subjected to the largest updating in organizational, cultutral and tactical change from Don Rumsfeld (read they hate him for rocking their boat) on behalf of GWB. Let the whiners go, real warriors would stay put and make their point face to face, ask a Marine.
They obviously don't know how to negotiate, either. Nothing comes off the table, so your opponent has to play the whole table.
If enough world powers keep up the diplomatic pressure, and they think the "luney" MIGHT JUST DO IT, we will see movement and be able to settle this in a reasonable manner.
James Troscinski, Grosse Pointe Park,
The article doesn't say if these generals would disobey orders or refuse to transmit them - or even that they'd be in the chain of command for these orders.
T. J. Cassidy, Arlington, Va., U.S.A.
Conflict is indeed inevitable. It is utterly irresponsible for those generals to have their opinion made public. Generals are there to execute the government orders not to voice their political view and lack of will. The longer the current crisis is allowed to continue the greater the risk to the western world and the entire Middle East region.
The public display of feableness by Britain's political establishment in the 1930s led to the outbreak of the most savage world war. Iran's rise as a nuclear power would change the map and wreck global havoc that must be stopped immediately. Sadly, only massive military strikes would bring the clerics in tehran to the negotiation table, appeasing fanatics never worked and never will.
Iranian leaders are not mentally, ideologically and psychologically fit to be in possession of nuclear weapons to hasten the arrival of their missing twelvth imam. Wether the generals resign or not, the countdown to conflict has begun.
S. Adams, Sydney, Australia
One must have sympthy for Bush and west in general. Like the old knigs they see the superiorty the West in decline. With China, Japan, Korea , Singapore, Malaysia and India as the future main players.
It is very hard to accept this kind of change. In this case to accept that white race do not have "Divine right " to set the rules. Most of the kings died fighting to protect the principal of "Divie right of knig" and I feel a few Western powers will rather die than to accept that they are only equal to non-whites.
It is time to pray for the sanity of Bush Blair & Co and not to condem them.

Bush and Cheny should have been impeached long ago. Their war is a lie, immoral, and is gambling with the people of the middle east and US (not to exclude europe). Congress does have the constitutional power to reign Bush/Cheney in. Congress and Bush should be careful that their actions don't place them in the dock as war criminals. The Germans did'nt expect Nuremberg when they began their agressions.

In my view, the Americans should not attempt 'biting more than they can chew' by adding an all out war with Iran to the ones raging in both Iraq and Afhanistan. However, effective air strikes to dismantle Iran's dangerous and stuborn nuclear program as well as their support to the insurgency in Iraq, is not only welcomed but also very neccessary. The world needs peace and countries like Iran shoul be prevented, as effectively as possible, from endangering world peace.
Abu, J.S., Abuja, Nigeria
It is my considered opinion that these generals and admirals should be cashiered immediately. International diplomacy rests upon a carrot and stick approach of incentives and disincentives to produce a preferred course of action. While they may be correct in their assessments, making such information public undermines the administration's bargaining position, encourages Iran to be more intractible and makes makes armed conflict almost certain. As members of the military they gave up some of their rights of free speech to live under the UCMJ, Therefore their concerns should have been expressed privately up the chain of command. And if that was intolerable, they should have returned to civilian life before going public with this criticism.
It should also be noted that being a general does not make one an infallible military expert, McClellan saw no route to victory Grant did sometimes the problem lies with the vision of those in charge and their willingness to do whatever is needed to win.
Martin King, Atlanta, GA

I am really tired of reading propaganda in your socalled news. There is too much staff of psycho warfare here.
A war with Iran is a reality, but you put on views and comments that say the US will not be able to attack Iran. If the US indeed cannot attack Iran, an enemy that depises the US leadership, many other countries will be able to do the same. I believe the US must attack Iran even for only one reason: A threat to the US leadership. Even if Iran is innocent of all the hostile acts that the US and UN have been accusing it of, the US must still attack this country to show other potential enemies and trouble makers that they must not immediate Iran. This is a thumb rule for a leader any time in our human history.
H. Kaito, Tokyo, Japan
Perhaps, The White House and the Pentagon are persuing new reasons for war, in order to keep the troops out in the field until a clear victory of any kind can be declared. They would be very mindful of how some of their GIs ran amock back home after their inglorious return from Vietnam.
There's an oxymoron of strategy somewhere in there!
Robbie Rohan, Great Chart. Kent, UK
Well its just typical isnt it? the terrorist Bush administration have been running round the world for the past 7 years keeping us all "safe" and now a real threat emerges, albeit one that has been provoked by the US policy into hatred, one with the actual capability to produce weapons of mass destruction and the warmongering Bush has used up all his gratuities fighting pointless wars with easy targets that were no threat at all!
The boy has cried wolf one too many times and has finally come unstuck!

In my opinion, there should be more people who thinks as John Zimmer of St.Louis....who is absolutely correct in stating that impeachment proceedings should be brought against both 'Bush'and 'Cheney'....if not for any other purpose but so that impeachment proceedings would be in the history books....but...that ain't going to be...... we need to change government, as in get rid of both political parties , which ain't going to happen either, so my suggestion to the country....

Tobor, Port Harcourt, Nigeria
You want to lock or kill Generals for speaking their mind. Does it even make you think, that maybe they might be speaking from experience? We have pushed our troops to the limit over a war that never made sense to anyone except the Cheney. We should fight the war against terror and not against enemies that are imagined. We have waisted people and resources over a war that in no way threatened us at all. It was a war in theory. We have pressed our great troops too far and the Generals know this and aren't willing to put up with it any more. It's time to pick our fights with more reason. It's time to stop with the patriotic bs and start thinking out our solutions. Time to stop being left and right and do the right things.

Dear Human Being,
Some 99% of all people would rather hide behind the truth and believe in god or their elected leaders while the other 1% is struggling to inform those who wish to know the facts and truth.
We are slowly sliding towards a complete Fascist state because leaders have no Moral Courage, so it is up to us the people to begin to create a change. Answers are available but we have dig deep to find them. "The powers that be" try and control our lives but they know that the tides are changing and a quiet revolution has already begun. So if Israel does what it wants as always because the world is its hostage, they will perish forever.
If you are interested to be a part of this societal shift look into your CONSCIENCE and ask it to give you a hand, it's that easy, truly is.
To help you see what is truth and what is fabrication, please be courageous and open your mind:

welcome to the military coup. all sorts of stuff happens when a government unravels. bush was merely the manifestation of that unravelling...were there not a bush, it may have been necessary to invent one, eh?

The Generals saw the problems before we invaded Iraq. They were replaced. These Generals see the problems before we attack Iran. They will be replaced.
Bush needs to be impeached. President Clinton lied about having sex with an intern. Bush lied about Iraq having weapons of mass destruction.
John Zimmer, St. Louis, Missouri/USA
Whats your's, and the rest of Europe's answer?....more talk? It didn't work with Hitler. What in Gods name makes you think it will work with these idiots in Iran? History is on the side of my opinion. The enemy at the gates is on the side of yours.
B. Murphy, Madisonville , KY
Are you listening to yourselves John McDoanld from Glascow and Theodore Krug from Atlanta? These generals are not in their position because of their cowardice. These men who are threatening to resign have more information and a better understanding of what's a stake and what could happen then we do! Surely, it must be a dire situation if they are threatening to quite. The military isn't a democracy? The US is supposed to be the leader of the free world! They have every right to have an opinion, and in this case it seems that they are the voices of reason.

the generals should revolt against the tyrant

Thank goodness these commanders have stepped forward to protect the honor of the United States armed forces where these elected officials, nothing more, have shattered the global admiration and good will earned by U.S. armed forces through liberation in WW II. (mentioned in another posting)
All of you so gung-ho to continue fighting this blatant and completely contrived "War on Terror", created to replace the "Cold War" by those in power now who hated to see it go then, assemble a volunteer force from amongst citizens and current military, and go for it.
But remove the American flag from your uniforms and vehicles before you do so. Enough humans have been obliterated in our name for the sake of Empire.
Long live the Republic.
An American, American settlement,
the last time i checked, those exact same millitary cheifs serve under the pleasure of the president. and if the commander in chief of the united states millitary orders action, guess what, they have no choice but to obey his orders. only the president can fire the generals and he still has to accept their resignations in the first place. but in all likelyhood, airstrikes are what we would use in an engagement like this, just because iran is so remote overall, that a ground engagement would be impossible. all we want to do is pound their nuclear program into the stone age and make shure that it's just for energy, not weapons. i hate using force unless it's a last resort, but if it threatens us here stateside, then we have to do something besides talk about it right!

What makes people think America has the right to invade smaller countries at will? Okay their the biggest kid in the block, but pushing around poor countries doesn't say much about the land of the free and home of the brave. Are americans the only ones allowed to enjoy liberty? I don't remember god or anyone else declaring that.
john, madrid, madrid,
Whether we like it or not, in the near future there will be a world war between the West and Islam: all you have to do is listen to translations of the hate speech pouring forth daily from the mullahs and imams from Tehran to London. This hate speech rivals the Nazis in its intensity, and is clearly a precursor to world war.
Muslims have no idea of what they are going to experience:they forget Hiroshima, they forget Tokyo, they forget Hanover, they forget Iwo Jima and they are going to relive it all, again. The liberals in Europe and the U.S. have forgotten Munich, Pearl Harbor and they are going to wait to be attacked and then be forced to relive a world on fire.
I believe the mullahs and the imams, I believe the President of Iran, I believe every word he says and I believe he will lead millions to a death by fire.

what the 9/11 questioner fails to acknowledge is that even he believes we have gone backwards as far as safety in the last 5 years. something much worse than another 9/11 is in process.

"...the generals are perfectly clear that they dont have the military capacity to take Iran on in any meaningful fashion..."
I would not want these 'generals' in charge if we really had to fight for our lives against overwhelming odds. Identify them now and get rid of them.
O. Orr, Spring, Tx
Love or hate George Bush, the military doesn't set policy in most democracies. There's a good reaon that this is so.
Even so, the article adds weight to the argument that Bush won't attack Iran. It's too late. He's too weak.
It's ironic that Bush let his presidency get bogged down by a country that posed so little threat to US interests. Saddam was no angel, but his Iraq was effectively contained by the allied military presence in the Gulf. It never sponsored terrorism on any meaningful scale.
If Bush had not hamstrung himself by invading Iraq, then his administration would now surely be much better equipped to handle an intransigent Iranian regime - whether by peaceful or warlike means. The threat from his military build-up would be credible. He would also have some legitimacy in making the threat.
US soft power, hard power, he's poured them down the drain. Quite an achievement. Quite a legacy.
Marton, Ohio, US
I don't think even George Bush is stupid enough to attack Iran.
As slow witted as he is, even he has learned the limits to US power. It is not the "all powerful" country he thought he once thought it was before the war in Iraq.
He can't attack his forces are stretched too thin. His only option would be to bomb Iran mercilessly. And that would only happen if Iran actually attacked the US. And the likely hood of that happening is nonexistent. The Cheney rhetoric is just just bombast and BS. It means nothing.
Richard Gordon, Toronto, Canada
Where are the George Patton's, the Omar Bradleys, the Douglas MacArthurs, and Dwight Eisenhauers of our time? A "generals revolt" at war time?! These men should be locked up for even the thought, heck, maybe even shot! We have become a country of whimps and appeasers and we will suffer the consequences for it. The WWII generation was the greatest generation, this one is indeed the sadest. Remember, it was this nation that was attacked, multiple UN resolutions against Iraq that were not abided by for twelve years and we are the bad guys? Again, whatever consequence our appeasement brings, we will have truely deserved it, i.e, Nevil Chaimberlin...
George, Atlanta,
It cannot be assumed that the United States would "win" a war against Iran in the Persian Gulf. Iran might well be able to sink one or maybe two American carriers and also block the Straits of Hormuz. From an Iranian viewpoint, such an outcome might constitute "victory" - even if their cities and nuclear facilties were destroyed by Amercian bombing. On the other hand, the Gulf countries may well be prepared to accept the temporary inconvenience of the closure of the Straits if the threat of a nuclear Iran can be eliminated.
Jeffrey Jameson, Dhahran, Saudi Arabia
Any General that would say such should be fired NOW! They could do it (quit) but they should not be telling the world what they would do. How can our President have any threat to make if they do this. Sometimes a threat is all that is needed to avoid war.

Radical Muslims may be overrunning the churches of Denver, North Carolina, but in most of the world, it looks quite the opposite, that the US is out to destroy the Islamic peoples, for no other reason than there is money in it for some people. So-called Christianity is doing a fine job of destroying itself at the moment, having hitched its wagon to the forked tongue serial killers in the White House. It's true we've become too tolerant of things immoral and corrupt, for so many people are not even willing to look at the facts that we in the mighty US have done such infinitely worse things than any of the terrorists we claim to be afraid of. If you think Jesus would have been in favor of all this, you don't know much about the New Testament. And if you think "Hollywood" would "bow down" to Islamic will, you really don't know much about the people in Hollywood either.
Bill, Phoenix, AZ, USA
Sure these "Generals" can quit if they want, then they should be shot as traitors. Conscience be damned, if we don't destroy this terrorist enemy they will destroy us. We need strong focused Commanders such as Grant, Patton, or Schwarzkopf. Where are the commanders who know the quickest way to win is through the enemy and their infrastructure.
As a Nation we have been neutered by the feminists , ACLU and enviro's to the point where we don't know how or when to be MEN and destroy the enemy, EVEN when it means our own homes and schools will be raped and shattered by those we coddle.
WE ARE IN TROUBLE PEOPLE, UNDERSTAND IT!

Steve Townsend from Denver, N.C.- You seem to forget that the whole point of freedom is too allow points of view and beliefs other than your own. Furthermore, who gets to decide what is immoral anyway? This kind of WASPish attitude is part of the many reasons as to why the Arab world feel threaterned by the US. Alan is right in saying that it is America (and to an extent Britain), that are the aggressors, although I am certainly not suggesting that Iran is an innocent victim. The point is that at several occasions over the last few years Iran has tried to reason with the US but met a wall of silence each time.
Certainly, these miltiary leaders should not be treated as traitors, their first loyalty is to their COUNTRY not government.
Diane, Alan and Frank- Thankgoodness there are people like you left in your country!
Josh, Leicester, UK
I think the US should pull out of the Middle east and everywhere else, including Euope for that matter. We should concurrently deliver an ultimatum to nations with which we are at odds stating: We don't care what kind of government you have, you get what you deserve. We don't care if your leaders or people enslave and kill each other. But if you threaten and attack us, or one of your neighbors who happens to be one of our allies, we will use our nukes and turn you into a smoking cinder. And we won't be sending any more free aid at the expense of the American people to help you put out the fire, either. Then we should make an example of, say, Natanz in Iran just to show we're serious. maybe give them a day or two warning to evacuate their people, unlike Hitler or Stalin, just to show how nice we are. Then use our troops that come home to close off our borders to the rest of the ungrateful world.
Henry , Hammond, USA / INDIANA
It's good to see some common sense prevail. Maybe the military should take it a step further and mount a coup. They at least seem the only ones with any intelliegnce. Clearly Bush and all his cronies have lost complete touch with reality. This administration would have to be the worst by far of any in American history. The world stood together with the US united in grief and sadness over 9/11. Bush's response since then has made the US in the eyes of the rest of the world look no better then the Terrorist's he seeks to deystroy. Bombing Iran is just plain stupid........my 5 year old kid even knows that. I say give those generals a medal, and get rid of Bush before he does any more damage.
