THE deputy leader of Al-Qaeda, Ayman al-Zawahiri, has urged supporters in Iraq to extend their “holy war” to other Middle Eastern countries.
In a letter sent to the leader of Al-Qaeda in Iraq in the past few weeks, Zawahiri claims that it is defeating US forces and urges followers to expand their campaign of terror.
He conjures a vision of an Islamic state comprising Lebanon, Palestine and Syria, where Al-Qaeda has already gained its first footholds.
The goal of an Islamic “greater Syria”, first outlined by Zawahiri two years ago, is detailed in the letter amid growing concern about the activities of new groups under Al-Qaeda’s influence in the countries concerned.
In Lebanon yesterday, Islamist militants of various nationalities from Fatah al-Islam were holding out under renewed army bombardment in Nahr al-Bared camp near Tripoli. Many fought and trained in Iraq.
The little-known Jaish al-Islam claims to be holding Alan John-ston, the BBC journalist, in Gaza, where militants disillusioned with Hamas are said to be drifting to Al-Qaeda.
Jaish al-Islam has demanded the release of a woman who tried to blow herself up during the 2005 bombing of a wedding reception in the Jordanian capital of Amman, an operation ordered by Al-Qaeda in Iraq.
In Syria, the Al-Qaeda leader Abu Musab al-Suri is believed to have been arrested, but cells are said to be recruiting in Palestinian camps near Damascus, the capital. Al-Qaeda websites are demanding the overthrow of President Bashar al-Assad.
Zawahiri’s letter was sent to Abu Hamza al-Muhajer, the leader of Al-Qaeda in Iraq, and intercepted by a Middle Eastern intelligence service.
A senior American security source said he was aware of the letter and Al-Qaeda’s growing emphasis on spreading jihad through a volatile region.
The source said Zawahiri, a Sunni, was determined to prevent Lebanon falling into the hands of the Shi’ite Hezbollah movement, which has tried to bring down the government.
“Al-Qaeda is trying very hard to seize a foothold in Syria,” the American source added.

I'm linking this article to my blog - Keep Tony Blair For Pm - (no joke - though I accept the cause is lost.)
Here in the UK the liberal intelligentsia are up in arms because Mr Blair wishes to strengthen police powers and repeal the Human Rights Act. It has been used to upturn common sense cases in the UK courts on numerous occasions where judgements have said that the loss of a suspected terrorist's human rights is of MORE DANGER than their terrorist activities! Honestly! This was a Lord Hoffmann decision in 2004.
Tony Blair is fighting this kind of vapid nonsense even as he leaves power. Good luck to him in his wish to protect the majority against the small but increasingly dangerous minority here in the UK .
There is a lack of coverage of this kind of international threat in the British press which I regard as censorship.
If you think YOU in the USA have it bad, read the British press. It makes me ashamed to be British. Mr Blair restores my hope and pride.

Sorry James, but I'm not sure even daily suicide bombings would awaken the liberals whose hatred for George Bush exceeds even their hatred for Al-Qaeda. And if those same liberal appeasers manage to take the White House in 2008 we can count on repeal of the Patriot Act and release of hundreds of terrorists after they close Guantanamo detention center!! So it seems the realistic solution is to press on DESPITE their duly noted "debilitating carping that hampers present-day efforts"!! We MUST contain jihad in the smallest possible region at all costs!! To borrow an age-old cultural cliche', radical Islamic jihad is, in fact, the "evil genie" that must continue to be bottled up despite any temptations to release it!!

Sir,
The crazy world of M.A.D. i.e. Mutually assured destruction) on both sides, or iis it perhaps the ordinary people of the world on one side, and the manichean dualists on the other?
I seem to recall that depending upon the state of realpolitik at the time, both Mr Laden & Saddam Hussain had strong working links for years with CIA.

Sir,
It is a pity that this manichean dualist does not declare a greater jihad i.e. a holy struggle against the evil within himself!
Enough of the lesser jihad, if it is indeed that, i.e. a holy struggle of physical self-defence.
What a shame that we live in an increasingly dumbed down world.

This evil hostility is similar to what we saw with the Nazis: a group of people united in a sense of victimhood and grievance, convinced of their ideological and moral superiority with a racist basis, and seeking a subjugation of whomever disagrees - basically, the rest of the world, in this case the non-Islamic world.
This puts the subject into some historic and ideological context:

Joe, Manchester,
The more jihad exported, the better off we'll all be. There are far too many people who believe the terrorist episodes of the past decade are mere aberrations. Daily suicide bombings in major European and US cities might sufficiently focus the thinking of enough people so as to allow for a concerted anti-terrorist campaign to proceed without the debilitating carping that hampers present-day efforts.

So it looks as if Al Qaeda, having been frustrated by the dastardly villain Bush's iniquitous veto over the saintly US Democrats attempt to offer unconditional surrender whilst recently, getting their posteriors corporally castigated in Iraq, have decided themselves to adopt the less-confrontational liberal position of redeployment This is obviously a signal that Al Qaeda are ready to reach out and embrace dialogue in a conciliatory manner. Therefore we must put our differences aside and build a basis for lasting peace..("in our time").. so that the heaiing process can begin. I sincerely hope that all peace-loving people will offer the hand of friendship and attempt to nurture trust and respect when Al Qaeda redloy to a neighbourhood near them. It would be too much to hope I suppose that Bush might consider following Al Qaeda's example by redeploying out of Iraq.to, for example Iran, (with perhaps a little Rest and Recreation in Syria). Peace be upon you.
