The Iraqi Government demanded today that Turkey withdraw its army from Iraq's snowbound northern mountains.
Five days after Turkey launched its military incursion there are reports that its commandos have penetrated 100 miles inside Iraqi territory, as far as Iraq's border with Iran.
"The Cabinet expressed its rejection and condemnation for the Turkish military interference, which is considered a violation of Iraq’s sovereignty,” the Iraqi government said in a statement.
“The Cabinet stresses that unilateral military action is not acceptable and threatens good relations between the two neighbours.”
Iraq fears that its security forces in the north, the formidable Kurdish peshmergas, will get drawn into the warfare between Turkish troops and their quarry, the PKK guerrillas who are using northern Iraq as a base to launch terror attacks on Turkish cities.
So far the peshmergas have stood back from the chase and the outbreaks of fierce fighting.
“We want to maintain good relations with Turkey,” an Iraqi government spokesman told a news conference.
“Turkey has to understand the serious situation which might develop as a result of a military mistake which might take place between the peshmergas and Turkish forces.”
But Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the Turkish Prime Minister, warned that the incursion would last as long as necessary for Turkish troops to destroy the PKK's ability to attack Turkey.
“The cross-border operation is a result of Turkey’s right to self-defence,” said Mr Erdogan said in his weekly address to MPs from his ruling party.
He said the operation would end “once its goal has been reached", and innocent civilians would be spared.
The Turkish military was “destroying all terrorist elements on its path of advance,” Mr Erdogan went on.

Türkiye has the right and power to stop pkk terrorist group, which founded camps in the north part of Iraq.this is a must for Türkiye to say a 'stop' to a terrorist group of which history is full of blood murders.unfortunately when looking the view from outside it seems as if Türkiye is doing wrong.in fact this image is wrong.pkk killed and continues killing civilians.and from outside some compare Türkiye with Serbia and approach the topic partially in Türkiye we are not like brothers with kurds but just brothers that is to say the word 'like' is too much for us.we have much in common have the same values and culture.we have been brothers long before some europen countires began to be formed and will be forever.

Rob from Singapore seems to know too little about Turkey... Rob,Turkey IS the country of Kurds!. They make about one fourth of the population! Rob probably does not know either that there are more Georgians in Turkey than in Georgia; I did not know it either until recently; I heard from a Georgian visiting our Institute recently (about 4.5 million).. and many other ethnic groups from Caucasus, Balkans, Middle East etc.. We may have different ethnic backgrounds but we are all equal before the constitution...
So do not worry about us, Rob! There is enough place for us all here and we are not so stupid as to cut each other's throats beacuse we have differen ethnicities. We have learned the tactics of Imperialism through experience. By the way,, If it gets too tight for you in Singapore, come over here!

To Onder Akar:
When was the last time the PKK attacked a bus full of civilians? How about never and their attacks on civilians have ended since the 1990s. Your comments are very amusing and especially since Turkey actually has tea with Hamas!!!
Alan Michael, uk,
We're working on it. It's a long process. The war in Iraq was a good start. The rest might take longer.

Unlike Serbia, Turkey is a country with a history and a massive army which means that chances of forcing them to do anything is the same as Iraq becoming 'democratic country'. As for fighting guerillas Turkey has more experience fighting them than any other country in the world which should count as a advantage. I hope non-Turkish people would one day understand the position Turkey is in without seeing the consequences of a bus bombing..
Onder Akar, London, U.K
Türkiye is a democratic and independent country and has a right to defend its people against pkk terrorist group, which killed even babies and many people in the past.we cannot just watch what is happening when pkk is active just beyond the border of ours.there is no day when less than 10 civilians are not killed in Iraq.let's discuss this.but nobody disscusses this.we live with kurds like brothers because we have very deep connections with each other we have cultural values so we are united and will be forever.nobody should try to compare us with serbia.

Turkey have been itching to get into this because Turkey's demands to the US and Iraq to eradicate this terrorist threat fell on deaf ears. The result was the innocent loss of lives because of PKKs ability to freely move between borders.
To compare with Northern Ireland is foolish as Turkey is not occupying north Iraq, Turkey is acting to prevent further attacks taking place on Turkish soil.
If the pre-condition for joining the EU is to sacrifice innocent lives without a fight, well then keep your EU!
Volkan, London,
This is utter madness,Turkey have been itching to get into this, they have an army so they want to use it !
Not only have their tactics failed on previous similar assaults, they will fail again.
Going in with all fire power for a few terrorists is simply wrong, what would have happened if we had done the same with Northern Ireland ?
After many lives are lost on both sides, Turkey 'will' have to negotiate , the Kurds have a good cause only the naive & aggressive Turks cannot see it.
And this is the country who wants to join the EU, I don't think so, they don't understand human rights & only seem to know barbaric ways.
Maggie Millington, Brittany , France.
Erdogan playing to his own political gallery is surely going to come unstuck. Never in military history has this kind of "counter guerilla" operation succeeded and the Turkish army is considerably more inept than most. This is the perfect way to provoke MORE terrorist activity in Turkey.
Sean Shalor, Coventry, UK
Well why din't we force Turkey into giving the Kurds a country. We did with Kosovo and Serbia and the Kurds don't even have their own country, unlike the albanians.
