Deborah Haynes, The Times Baghdad Correspondent, won the Amnesty International National Newspapers award last night for her series of articles about the plight of Iraqi interpreters who worked for the British Army.
Her campaign led to the Government reversing its policy and offering assistance to the Iraqis who were victimised for working with the British.
The judges praised Ms Haynes for her courageous coverage, saying: "In a country where bad news is commonplace, this is one story had a happy ending."

Congratulations, Ms Haynes. Although it's still not over (see Glasgow). A translator myself (as distinct from an interpreter), but unable to master any non-European languages, I can empathise with the triple or quadruple difficulties these Iraqis face. I hope for their success, here and in the ME.

Congratulations to Ms. Haynes and The Times for effecting change and potentially saving lives. Well done!
