It looks like she's been in the wars. In fact, she just joined President Bush on his weekend trip to Baghdad and came back with what she calls a "shoe-venir".
Dana Perino, the White House Press Secretary, was sporting a clearly visible black eye as she returned to work in Washington today, briefing reporters on subjects including car industry bailouts and Middle East peace.
Ms Perino was in the room when an Iraqi reporter, Muntadhar al-Zaidi, pulled off his shoes and flung them at Mr Bush on Sunday in a gesture of contempt that has seen him hailed as a hero in the Arab world.
Mr Bush, who was giving a joint press conference with the Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, ducked sharply as the size 10 loafers whizzed past his head. His spokeswoman, sitting to his right, was hit in the face by a microphone boom sent flying by a presidential bodyguard.
Mr Bush tried to laugh off the attack and insisted that it had no deeper political significance – even as thousands demonstrated for the journalist's release. Mr Perino seems to be following his example: "Hi, everybody," she said at the start of today's White House briefing. "The shoe check-in policy/check-out policy will begin tomorrow."

Elizabeth in Edinburgh, she wasn't hit by a shoe but by a microphone boom knocked over by a bodyguard. As for disrespect, Grotius, this was a gesture that resonates in the Arab world but not in the West. I think that's why people are shrugging it off.

Elizabeth if you read the article it states "His spokeswoman, sitting to his right, was hit in the face by a microphone boom sent flying by a presidential bodyguard. " She wasn't hit by the shoe. I personally don't like Mr Bush and think it was a fairly good "peaceful" protest of how people feel
Paul, Leominster, US
Elizabeth of Edinburgh. You should read the article more carefully. It was not the shoe but a microphone boom stand. Regarding the incident, reporters are supposed to report the story and not create the story. I assume and hope he will find it difficult to get a press permit in future.
Mike Cooper, Marbella, Spain
Im no fan of GWB but you have to say he was very relaxed about the assault and dodged very neatly.
That is not a black eye just a minor bruise, there is no swelling
bill, ely,
All the anger towards Bush and America is clouding people's judgment. This is a profoundly disrespectful act to a head of state, and to the office of the President. And it is an abuse of the privilege of access granted to journalists, which is in all of our interests. Nobody should be proud of this.

A hero only in the Arab world? I'm sure most of the Western world thinks Mr. Bush got off lightly. I'm sorry that, in Ms. Perino´s case, once again, innocents pay for sinners.

He's a hero in my book too and I'm a yank!!!

Elizabeth, read the article:
"His spokeswoman, sitting to his right, was hit in the face by a microphone boom sent flying by a presidential bodyguard"
Not hit by the shoe, thus why you didn't see it happen..
Kathy, Aberdeen, USA
This shoe throwing incident is proof of the democracy and freedoms Mr. Bush has brought to Iraq. Would this reporter be alive today if he threw his shoe and Saddam Hussein?
William, London, UK
I think it's interesting that I read nothing but praise or indifference with respect to this shoe journalist. I think it's outrageously disrespectful and I'm waiting for someone to write an article that would agree. Regardless of your politics, that sort of behaviour is inexcusable.
Grotius, London, UK
Where on earth was she standing to get hit by that shoe?
I never saw either of the shoes hitting her?
Elizabeth, Edinburgh,
Well done Ms. Perino for laughing it off. Frankly the footage yesterday of those demonstrating on the street waving their shoes served only to remind me of Monty Python's "Life of Brian". So as the son of an Iraqi, perhaps I can suggest an alternative: "The Gourd, the Gourd, laud the Gourd!"
MN, London, UK
It rather sounds to me as if microphones and bodyguards are more dangerous than shoes.
After all, the shoes did not hit anyone.
