Ehud Olmert, the Israeli Prime Minister, issued a surprising response last night to the Arab peace initiative, inviting Arab leaders to a regional summit to discuss the plan.
Mr Olmert had previously hinted that he would be open to such talks, but yesterday’s dramatic announcement was his strongest reaction yet to a renewed diplomatic drive around the land-for-peace deal.
His announcement came at a joint press conference with Angela Merkel, the German Chancellor and current president of the European Union, who was meeting Israeli and Palestinian leaders to kick start negotiations.
“I would take advantage of this important opportunity. . . to invite to a meeting all Arab heads of state, including, of course, the King of Saudi Ara-bia, whom I regard as an important leader, in order to engage in dialogue,” Mr Olmert said.
“I think it is time to make a momentous effort in order to give a push to the diplomatic process. I am optimistic.”
The Arab peace initiative proposes that the Arab world grant Israel diplomatic recognition in return for the establishment of a Palestinian state within the 1967 boundaries, with its capital in Jerusalem, and a “just solution” for four million Palestinian refugees.
Yesterday Mrs Merkel added her voice to a growing chorus of Western leaders urging Israelis and Palestinians to use the plan as a basis for future peace. Underscoring the potential for failure, Mrs Merkel said: “It is important to talk, but it is also important to turn the spoken word into deeds.”

The words of the prophet are clear. The force of Ishmael and the forces of Esau will fight the final battle in the Holy City of Jerusalem. Who are these forces? West and East. We pray for no war. The trials of the last several centuries only dictate that when these forces clash. The fire of the past century's torment will only create a greater understanding of the Truth. The prophet has declared that the Temple will be built from within the fire...when so in our day!

The Arabs have rejected peace with Israel since 1947. During the interim period, they have continuously tried to destroy Israel and the Jews. Now it is time for Israel to thoroughly defeat the Arabs militarily and evict them from all of the Land of Israel. After the Arab defeat, Israel could assist the development of Arab nations and help provide resources for the development of an economy that would provide the basis for Arabs to live in a productive society.

Like so many other plans of the past, when this one fails because of some unreasonalbe demand on Isreal, the world will blame Isreal yet again. This is just another move by the Arabs to divert attention away from their true intentions. Which is to destroy Isreal, America and Western civilization. When will we learn these people cannot be trusted.

Olmert refuses to work with Bush & Rice. Refuses to work with the Palestininan. This is just another Israeli diversion. 50 years and no solution. & Trillions of USA dollars lost for an apartheid state.
I would love to cut Israel off tomorrow. You would see a peace plan in 48 hours!
Oh by the way Israel is losing 50,000 people a year to emigration. (with no influx) That copled with their low birth rate ensures an ultimate arab victory.
Finally there is a 30 percent starvation rate amoung jews if meals4israel org is to be believe.
Let the Zionists have their pyrrhic victory from their apts in NYC

Hamas extreme supporters do not want to recognize Israel and they do not "know this". You're projecting your own view onto them. Even if a general peace agreement is reached with the Palestinian Authority there will still remain a radical element that will continue with terror attacks. Hamas will not go away.

However long it takes, if there's to be a solution to this problem, it has to be in this direction.

I travelled through and spent time in Syria, Jordan then Israel in 1966. I spent the war in the North. I left in 1970 . I know enough to tell you that war is a horror that lasts with everyone for years. No one escapes, not the fighter pilots not the generals, not the humble farmer.
I know that both the ordinary Israeli and the ordinary Arab peasant do not hate each other and want to live in peace. If they can have peace they - the ordinary people - will live along side each other, trade, visit and talk about their kids. I watched it happen.
Every politician or attention craver should talk to the ordinary people, listen to their ideas and fashion a peace for them. It can be done!
Do NOT let the past rule the present and destroy the future.

Even if Arabs did attack, IDF killed local innocent people to force the Arabs people to leave the area. This fact is proven beyond all doubts.

We'll see exactly how much the Israelis want peace by what they offer the Palestinians as a state, how much of the West Bank and Jerusalem they grab, how many of their illegal settlements they dismantle
No one in their right mind can deny Israel's existence. Even Hamas' most extremist supporters deep down know this.
But for peace to be achieved the Palestinians have to be given a fair deal. Israel must not just give them a small piece of land, a fraction of what they rightfully deserve and dress it up as 'We offered them a homeland, they rejected it'
Doc, London,
In 1947 the Arabs rejected the UN resolution creating a Palestinian state. Instead they invaded Israel and were defeated. In 1967 the Arabs swore to destroy Israel and once again invaded. Thereafter, Israel offered to negotiate. The Arab response from their Khartoum conference was " No peace, No negtioation, No Israel. Do not foget that between 1948 and 1967 Egypt occupied Gaza while Jordan occupied the W. Bank. No Palestine then either.
Today, the HAMAS Charter ( Sec 7) avows the killing of Jews and destroying the Zionist entity. When the Arabs want a Palestinian state more than they want to destroy Israel, there may be peace.
