2 for 1 tickets to Singin' In The Rain, this coming Monday. Book now

A cat has succeeded in repressing her predatory instincts by adopting seven chicks to rear alongside her own litter of kittens. One-year-old Nimra, from Madaba in Jordan, has been watching over her unusual litter ever since the chicks’ mother died a month ago.
The mixed family, made up of her four newly born kittens and seven adopted chicks, lives in a cardboard box and has seemingly put its differences aside to eat, sleep and play together.
Examples of animals from different species reaching out to each other in times of need are rare but not unhead of. In 2005, a baby hippopotamus formed a bond with a giant century-old male tortoise after the infant nearly died in the tsunami that lashed Kenya. The same year in China, a chihuahua took charge of a newly hatched chick.

I'm afraid it's just an overactive gland pumping way too much estrogen in that poor cat's system. Mother nature DOES make sure, doesn't she? :/
Still, lovely story, and we all should take hope wherever we can find it :)
Agnes Kosznai, Hoogland, Netherland
Um, people? Specifically, anyone expressing confusion about or criticizing the fact that this was put in "Middle East News" - that's because it's taking place *in Jordan.* Jordan is *in* the Middle East. The writer is not attempting to frame this as overt political commentary - just telling us where the cat in question lives.
Kate, Cleveland Heights, Ohio, USA
oooohhhh man... OKAY this is cute and surprising but why do people have to make the fantastically illogical analogy from this situation to the middle east?!? Or say things like 'why can't we learn from our animal friends?' This is atypical behavior for cats, usually they EAT birds! Can't we find hope for peace from more meaningful sources, like real stories of human relationships marked by forgiveness and reconciliation? Sorry, I'm not generally a rude person, but people please! A little sanity and sense of perspective is in order here!
Granted, according to the law hypothesized by xkcd.com's Randall Munroe, the intelligibility of our verbal communication decreases in proportion to our proximity to kitties, so I guess I should curb my expectations.
Brian, Cambridge, USA/MA
This really goes to show that we can all get along if we really want to. I wish that humans were more like animals - we can learn so much from our "animal" friends.
Anne Mox, Sacramento, USA/CA
One of the sweetest things is how the kittie and chick look so alike in that one picture above...same lovely colors!
Diana, Sacramento, California USA
wouldn't it be nice if humans acted the same instead of all the violence mankind causes
linda kelly, allston, massachustts
Is this an artifact of climate change?
Jamiil, Perth, Australia
How interesting! In my country, Brazil, it happened just the contrary. A chicken adopted 4 kitttens. The real mother used to come to the chicken house just to feed the kittens but the whole day and night it was the chiken that took care of the kitttens. Including the kittens slept under the chicken wings
Thereza , Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Seriously - show these to warring factions in the Middle East and they will fall, weeping joyously, into each others arms and call each other brother. Cats and chickens just happen to be my favourite animals....now I just need to find someone who'll let me weep happily in their arms and call them brother! :)
Natalie, Amersfoort, The Netherlands
put females in charge of the world.
Christine Standing, Oxford,
That's great while the mother is responding to her maternal instincts. Wait until the kittens grow up and mother is not feeling so maternal: I hope the chicks make their escape before they become lunch and dinner.
After all don't we 'humans' nuture young animals only to slaughter them when they grow up?
Rob Riches, Croydon, uk
I love this story London Times. It reinforces my reverence for all God's creatures and I will not kill or eat any of them( Unless they are trying to kill and eat me.) Cats are amazing and chickens are precious.

ALL THINGS BRIGHT AND BEAUTIFUL ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL ALL THINGS WISE AND WONDERFUL THE LORD GOD MADE THEM ALL
DEBORAH EDWARDS, LAKEMOOR, IL
The cat is just letting them grow until they get nice and plump, then it will eat them.
Emma, London,
Is this Gordon Ramsey's cat?
Rupert, Littlehampton, UK
The cat must have been watching the F Word! It's the only way her kittens will learn where those tins come from.
Rupert, Littlehampton, UK
Love the comments (especially from Anne), but I would like to raise another point: The cat isn't the only animal to raise others, we do it too. One day they get eaten..
paul, Milton Keynes,
People, cats are peace loving animal! It just proved!
Alex, Sydney, Australia
My mother cat was very standoffish, until she went into heat. Then she got very loving. When she gave birth, the same thing happened. I think it's hormones, makes me wish everyone had them all the time.
J. Rhinehart, Spartanburg, usa
A ratio of 11 to 1in positive/negative reponses. I hope this is a small picture of the world. That would mean that there is hope for the future of this planet . Less than 10% are the ones who think towards the sarcastic negative view of life. The mass media tells us the Sopranos are great with all its violence and disrespect to women. Yet in reality, a mother feline shows the world how a mother should be. For over 90% to see the beauty in this cats love of a natural enemy - WOW
john sanders, lacrosse, wi usa
What a brilliant example for people around the world!
and OOHHH so cute!
M, Wellington, New Zealand
the cat should eat the chicks. what the hell is going on in the world eh? natural processes just get thrown by the wayside....
this worlds going to pot ;)

lovely story... :) puts a smile on my face in rainy Britain
Ben, London,
Absolutely beautiful story! And I have to agree here - animals stories like this show how truly 'superior' the human race is. It's sad that we can't seem to learn to accept each other unconditionally.
Jen, comstock park, Michigan, USA
Great story! Really, we can't we all get along as well?
Brie, Austin, Texas
My parents and their friends went to Kenya for my father's 50th birthday, and they stayed a couple of nights at the resort where the hippo and the tortoise live. Dad have it on camera. Precious!

Aaaaah.. I love it..
Zara Shubber, Tours, France
Highly irresponsible. What about the chickens' cultural needs? No cat could possibly provide an acceptable home background for a chicken. What do the local social services think they are doing? Multispecies fostering is completely inappropriate and at odds with fashionable social policy that that maintaining a clear racial divide is THE most important aspect of placing a homeless infant. And what's good enough for children, should be good enough for chickens.
anne murphy, london,
If animals can get along like this, why can't we humans do it?
Robin, South Lyon, Mi, USA
What a lovely story!
Jacqueline, Japan,
what a beautiful little story, full of hope and love. all of the animals look adorable. funny how this sort of thing never happens with people - look how far our superior civilisation has gotten us.
Ellis, London, UK
Human beings remain hostile to all other species unless they are subservient to them.
john, london,
once again , the animals give us a true example, of tolerance, acceptance, love, a lesson which does not speak with our brains but in our hearts.
