ISRAEL awoke last Friday to find itself encircled by enemies with its most determined foe, Iran, entrenched on its southern doorstep in Gaza.
Hamas’s stunningly swift victory in a brief civil war has left the Jewish state at its must vulnerable for three decades.
Inspired by a philosophy of militant Islam and backed by Iranian weaponry and military training, Hamas poses a direct threat to Israel and, if left unchecked, will soon be in a position to step up its lethal rocket attacks on towns and villages across the border.
In Lebanon to the north, Israel faces Hezbollah, the militant Syrian-backed militia, which has rebuilt its frontline forces - also with Iranian help - since last summer’s war exposed the shortcomings of the Israeli defence forces. The Lebanese government can do little to curb Hezbollah’s growing strength.
“Tehran has succeeded in planting an Iranian division in the north and now they have a foothold in the south by establishing their southern division - Hamas,” said a source in Israel’s defence ministry.
Then there is Syria, with which Israel is still officially at war. Damascus is demanding the return of the Golan Heights, occupied by Israel since 1967. Ehud Olmert, the Israeli prime minister, said recently his country did not want war with Syria but warned that a “miscalculation” could spark one.
To the east - beyond Jordan - lie the deeply unstable Iraq and the greatest threat of all in Israeli eyes, Iran. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian president, has declared that Israel should be “wiped off the map” and continues to advance a nuclear programme in defiance of the United Nations security council.
Israeli intelligence has little doubt that if Israel or the US attacks Iran’s burgeoning uranium enrichment programme, much of the retaliation will come from Tehran’s clients on its borders.
They are also watching a fierce debate inside the US administration between doves led by Condoleezza Rice, the secretary of state, and hawks such as Vice-President Dick Cheney, on the repercussions of any military strike against Iran.
With the doves seemingly holding the upper hand in Washington, US support for a hardline Israeli response may be fading. But Israeli leaders continue to warn that they will prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
Ehud Barak, who is expected to be appointed defence minister tomorrow, met Olmert to agree a crisis plan to deal with the threat of Hamas before Olmert left for Washington to meet President George W Bush this week.
“Israel will not tolerate a Hamastan at its back door,” said one of Barak’s close associates.

Every nation has "do-gooders". Every nation on earth also has its own "hardliners" ie their backbone. They needed it to exist in the first place. Which nation has not, in its beginning, fought a war of existance? That said, I believe that the "do-gooders" are the majority in every nation and contribute most to human growth. Both kinds of people are needed in different decades. This is natural. War is therefore natural. As is peace. So prepare for inevitable periods of both. Islamic arabs really need to fight now. Their national elites are often western- friendly stooges. They need elbow room for their independance - freedom really. America will not withdraw easily. Both will fight hard, but not forever.

Israel will be at war this summer.
Let us just hope Europe will support the jewish state, and not cowardly back the arab oppressors.
drzz, France,
The people of Iran have woken up every morning to see a new American base setup either in the Persian Gulf or up north. during the past few years They have helped America in its War in Afghanistan, and what do they get? "Axis of Evil". They wake up to the growing military presence of the US in Afghanistan, then Iraq and most recently the Persian Gulf. Should' they be scared? I am sorry for Times, but the story HAS two sides to it, and it must portray both. May be Tony Blair was right in what he said about the news papers!
James, London,
From a Chinese point of view, the Arabs will not tolerate Jews in Israel for the next decade to the middle of the century. It is highly likely that a war of minor proportions involving smaller states will breakout into a war of major proportions involving larger states.
Really, the US has no business in the middle east but do so to protect their religous belief and ensure flow of petroleum resources. White leaders of Canada, the US and Europe would never tolerate the destruction of their precious biblical jews.
It is a matter of time before a major war occurs.

Procrastination and half-measures will only worsen things. Iran must be completely -- completely -- disarmed this summer, alas probably by force. Hamas for its part must be eliminated as an organisation and as an ideology, which alas will likely require the outright killing of its members. Hizbolla and Syria likely will make nice once these two tasks are accomplished, but if not then they must suffer the same fate. It must be done quickly, overwhelmingly and ruthlessly, such that all is done within at most one week. In the aftermath Iranian petroleum wealth should be immediately redistributed to benefit the regional and global poor, and Israel must work rapidly to assist a just, noncorrupt Palestinian arab state. Sincerest work for real justice, accompanied by rapid ruthless force against the unjust -- who include theocrats -- must be urgently embarked upon this very summer. And we Brits and Europeans have to help.

What is happening now in the Middle East is the usual miscalculation of the U.S. policies in that area by supporting verbally the moderate forces of Abbas regime and backing the intransigence of the Israelis towards the Palestinians. By implememting these policies, the U.S. has created four monsters surrounding Israel: Huzbullah, Hamas, Iran and Syria. The Arabs can no longer trust the americans. In addition, a disaster seems to be looming that will devastate the whole area including Israel. The americans think they can govern the world by force. They are wrong. And for as long as they continue to do that, they will have a high number of monsters surrounding them everywhere. Wake America. Help teach the world to better themselves by listening to their problems and not by imposing on them your policies. Give them the resources to better educate themselves. Give them hope for a better future. Be a leader. Your youngsters are dying daily in Iraq and Afganistan. please wake up now

History has always shown that nations can deal with sworn enemies sooner or later, but that sooner is easier than later. And no matter how many times this is shown to be true, dealing with enemies sooner is always the most difficult course politically.
The US will look back on this period we're living in with nostalgia - when we're involved in a far bigger war than would have been the case if we'd only gone into Iran and kept them from obtaining nuclear weapons and gone after Bin Laden and his organization in Pakistan, when it would have been relatively easy - relatively easy compared to what we're going to have to do later on.
The Cold War we fought with Russia killed more than a hundred million people worldwide. A new Cold War with radical Islam will be no less hideous.

What he actually said was "Imam ghoft een rezhim-e ishghalgar-e qods bayad az safheh-ye ruzgar mahv shavad." which translates to "The Imam said this regime occupying Jerusalem must vanish from the page of time."
End the occupation.
Seems the translators are either very bad or very corrupt. There must be a couple of tax exempt conservative think tanks in the mix.
GregD, Boston,
I'm 47...and it's 2007. I've made it thus far without having to go to war with my fellow Human Being, but I fear it won't be long before my inner peace must come to an end.
As usual, this would be brought to a culmination by man kinds constant beliefs over 'God' and more precisely...who's vision of 'God' is the right one. No matter how pointless this has become throughout the Millenum's, it pretty much involves the same players, Christian Versus Muslim. It never really mattered before, except now...both players have the means to wipe the other off the board and today, it's yet another 'Gun shut at the OK Coral ...who's going to fire first?
It doesn't really matter, as a lot of people are going to die. And as per usual, it will be man kind who's the victim, by his own hand...in effect, suicide!
Perhaps it would be better for us to separate ourselves aside from those who see death as a gateway to a better life. I for one, don't subscribe and am God Free. I love this life.
David Downes, Chester, UK
I'm no fan of Pres Ahmedinejad, a cunning little man, but I do believe the more accurate translation of what he said is that he 'anticipated the State of Israel will vanish from the pages of history', not that someone should actively destroy a nation. In this context, the same might be said of Palestine, per se, or several other Middle East states. The entire region is a melting pot of ancient tribes that have hated each other for millenniums. I cite British meddling for the geopolitical status of Iran, Iraq and Palestine today. And the Romans, of course, along with the Zaddekim and modern Zealots. Maybe a large asteroid is called for in the event Vlad Putin doesn't speed up Tehran's programme.
Tony Gold, Bangkok, Thailand
Give Palestine back to the Palestinians, give New York to the Israeli's!
charlie, Totnes,
The Iranians are not the ones threatening military action. President Ahmadinejad's comment that Israel should be "wiped off the map" has been misinterpreted and misrepresented as part of the American/Israeli propoganda against it. America's sad attempt to drive a wedge between the people of Iran and their government will not change anything on the ground. What Iranian people ( I believe Israelis and Americans too) realy hate is extremism of all kind whether it is the mullahs, neo cons or the Zionists. Unfortunately all these groups hold too much and too many leverages/instruments of power in their respective countries. As a proud Iranian patriot I can guarantee that any unfair action against Iran will unite the Iranians and the rest of the muslim world to the benefit of extremists on all sides. Lets all pray that the Americans or the Israelis do not make that mistake.
Mohsen Zohreh, London, UK
What happens when Iran no longer can export 4 million barrels a day of crude oil for the international market? What happens when the UK cannot import enough natural gas to keep its peoples warm?
These are two likely outcomes of some sort of physical confrontation with Iran along with a host of other less obvious ones.
And why does Israel have any nuclear weapons, declared or otherwise?
jakelake, Houston, TX
