Israeli police have broken up a neo-Nazi cell that had been carrying out attacks on religious Jews, homosexuals, drug addicts and workers, in a case that has shocked the Jewish state.
The youths, who had Nazi tattoos and allegedly celebrated Adolf Hitler’s birthday, belonged to Soviet Jewish families who had migrated to Israel under its law of return, which allows people with at least one Jewish grandparent to become Israeli citizens.
Under strict religious rules, however, many of the former Soviet immigrants are not considered to be Jewish.
“It is difficult to believe that Nazi ideology sympathisers can exist in Israel, but it is a fact,” said Major Revital Almog, the police officer in charge of the year-long investigation that began when vandals daubed swastikas and Hitler’s name on synagogues in Petah Tikva, near Tel Aviv.
While such incidents have been on the rise in Eastern Europe, this was believed to have been the first time it had occurred on such a scale in Israel, which was formed after the Nazi Holocaust that killed six million Jews.
“The tragic irony in this is that they would have been chosen for annihilation by the Nazis they strive to emulate,” said Arieh O’Sullivan, a spokesman for the Anti-Defamation League, which targets cases of anti-Semitism.
Israeli media published videotapes that the group of eight men, aged between 16 and 21, had made of themselves, showing them giving the Nazi salute and kicking a victim to the ground in a subway.
The news has caused deep shock in Israel, and prompted calls by Eli Yishai, the ultra-Orthodox Trade and Industry Minister, for a tightening of the regulations that have allowed large numbers of residents of the former Soviet Union, as well as many Ethiopians of Jewish descent, to become Israeli citizens.
“We have to rid ourselves of this Satan who lives in the heart of Israel,” Mr Yishai said.
Israel’s law of return is based on the Nazi definition of what constitutes a Jew, as laid out in Nuremberg in the 1930s, on the grounds that if a person was considered Jewish enough to be murdered by the Nazi regime, they were Jewish enough to live in Israel. Under its rules, more than a million people from the former Soviet Union flocked to Israel in the 1990s. But according to the Immigration and Absorption Ministry, more than 300,000 of them do not consider themselves Jewish.
The neo-Nazi group was allegedly headed by 19-year-old Eli Buanitov, known within the cell as “Eli the Nazi”. He and his acolytes are believed to have been in regular contact with neo-Nazi groups abroad.
The Israeli Nazis had white supremacist insignia tattooed on their bodies as well as the number 88, suspected of being a code for Heil Hitler, as H is the eighth letter of the alphabet.

This incident simply shows the downside of extreme ignorance. If any of these kids who committed these crimes in Israel had lived in Hitler's Germany, they would have been rounded up by the Gestapo, tossed into gas chambers and then shoved into big ovens to burn down to ashes. It seems for these kids, this whole neo Nazi thing is just another cool fad. They have no clue as to its dark history and where they themselves fit into the wrong side of the killing machine that was once Nazi terror.

The Israeli nazis as all nazis are cowards. They sport anit Semetic tatooes on their bodies, but hide their faces.
Miriam ben-Ezra, Karmiel, Israel
A law against"anti-Semitic" speech and politics in Israel would have to deal with the definition of who is Semitic. Arabs, obviously, are a Semitic people. Therefore, anyone giving blatantly anti-Arab speeches, or having an anti-Arab political program, would be banned, arrested, etc. This would put many in the ultra-nationalist Israeli political camp in the touchy position of being in violation of any anti-Semitic law. Therefore, do not expect any broad law that bans anti-Semtic" speech and behavior in Israel any time soon.
Gary, cedar park, usa
The term Semitic (Decendants of Shem, eldest son of Noah) refers to many of the races of the middle east and north africa, including arabs, not just the hebrew sect known as jews (Those from Judea). Therefore, to be anti-semitic would be to be against all those peoples.
You can, of course be against the policies of Israel without being anti-semitic, can't you?

"We have to rid ourselves of this Satan who lives in the heart of ..."
This kind of extremist language is the precurser for crimes of genocide, the first step being to de-humanise the selected group.

"... - After Israelâs victory in the 1967 Six-Day War the USSR broke off diplomatic ties with the Jewish state, halting emigration by Russian Jews ..."
... OMG... It was NOT any little bit tangible emigration by Russian Jews to Israel before the year 1967... I was there...
... several jews (MAXIMUM!!!) per year - this is NOT EMIGRATION!!... That was IRON WALL, sir... Please be accurate with such a painfull matters... PLEASE!!....

Letâs not forget. Most of these people and their families came to Israel more then 10 years ago. They are not exactly new immigrants. If now they are aged between 16 and 21, do the math. They came to Israel as children between 7 and 12 years old. So, these neo-Nazis are not actually from Russia, they have became such in Israel. They come out of the Israeli schools. This neo-Nazi cell has been grown in Israel itself.
Michael, Tel-Aviv, Israel
It is sad to see NEO-NAZI sympathisers in Israel. It seems Holocaust servivers have no where to be safe from Hitloric ideology implementers. Iran and their leader Amadinajad is threatening Israel with a Nuclear holocaust, as if that is not enough pressure to keep the survivers wide awake everynight another NEO-NAZI simpathisers living in Israel? Where can Jewish people be safe on this Earth? While God has promised the Jewish people an everlasting life in heaven, but the people on Earth seem to fail Jewish people again and time again. I think the held persons should be sentenced to the maximum allowable sentences so they will send the message to other NEO-NAZI organizations they may be able to to sympathise the demise of the third reich other places in Europe, but not in Israel. Jewish survivers of holocaust must be assured that they are safe at home from NAZI persecutions, at least in Isreal where God has given home to the Jewish people.

What better illustration of the Law of Unintened Consequences could one hope to find.
Gouldman, LONDON,
So a bunch of Russian nazis have more rights than an Arab Israeli who has lived all his life in Israel.
Apartheid surely?
tony b, london,
The irony is that this echoes the one scene in Life Of Brian that was deemed so deeply thought-provoking that it had to be cut!
These people were raised in a milieu in which, no matter how grounded or otherwise the fears of Israeli society might be, those fears are frequently couched in the language of racism, collective blame and collective punishment - the staple diet of National Socialism. Such a society will produce inevitably people like this - many of their randomly-chosen targets after all coincide with those of the ultra-Orthodox. They simply widened their net a bit.
The interesting bit will be to see whether Israeli society concludes that the danger lies in the fact that the language it uses to talk about itself is too extreme - or not extreme enough.

This is one of the worst things that could happen here and it is a disgrace that it took the police such a long time to bring them to justice. I think the whole group should be deported and no money wasted on them in jail, The parents should be deported too as they seems as much to blame for letting this go on. Also the law should be changed and no one just because he is jewish should get automatic citizenship.

Please do not blow this story out of proportion. You use the word "cell" in your headline, this suggests organised units of terrorists with maybe even a politicial ends trhey are trying to achieve. The reality is that these are just a group of dissaffacted and unpleasant youths.

The Law of Return also includes next of kin (e.g. parents) and spouses of anyone with at least one grandparent Jewish.
The rest of the citizenship law also allows for the next of kin and spouses of anyone with an Israeli citizenship (Jewish or non-Jewish).
So many of the immigrants to Israel have no Jewish grandparents at all and some have immigrated for purely economic reasons.
One other large group is African and Asian foreign workers, who after several years can apply for citizenship and their children if born in Israel can also get the citizenship.
Alan, Montreal, Canada
When will Israeli immigration authorities wake up to the possibility that many Russian Jewish immigrants may not actually be Jewish?! We deal with the same crisis in Europe and the United States. People want so bad to get out of the former Soviet bloc countries that they'll obtain false documents claiming they are Jews, knowing foreign consulates will sympathetically, and therefore automatically, grant them visas. Soon after arriving in their new country, they get involved in Russian crime families and-you know the rest.
Real Jews do not need this kind of aggravation. All countries that have taken in Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe should be more cautious.
Mary Witherspoon, Boston, Massachusetts
Why is there a call to limit the number of Ethiopian Jews coming into Israel?
Nane Withheld, London, UK
There should be no law against anti-Semitism, in Israel or anywhere else, for the simple fact that any person is entitled to his opinion. When, however, that opinion finds expression in acts of violence against another person--that is a different matter. But there are already laws aplenty to deal with such violence, and they should be strictly enforced--against anti-Semites and everybody else.

To Rom and anyone like him - The Zionists saved the lives of those people they managed to 'force' to the 'hot and backward' Middle East. Otherwise they would have been among the 6 million murdered in rather hotter ovens of Aushwitz by Hitler.

A racist gang? Disoriented âyoungstersâ more likely, desperately in search of an identity they hope to find by opposing and destroying beliefs and values that form the very basis on which a sane society rests.
Ray, Hombeek, Belgium
Let's not blow up this incident to major proportions. Basically, it's just about unadjusted young people who just like soccer hooligans enjoy destroying anything that relates to the existing establishment.
