Israel carried out an airstrike inside Syria last week, possibly targeting weapons destined for Hezbollah guerrillas in Lebanon, it emerged yesterday.
A US official said: “It wasn’t big. It was a quick strike. They \ were engaged by the Syrians, they dropped their ordnance and scooted out of there.”
Last Thursday Syria announced that its forces had opened fire on an Israeli aircraft that had infiltrated its airspace and dropped several bombs on its territory. It has said that it is weighing an appropriate response to the Israeli “aggression”.
Israeli and US sources said that the raid targeted Iranian weapons being shipped into Syria, possibly to be sent to Hezbollah, which fought a fierce war with Israel last summer. After its failure to crush the Islamist militia in a month-long invasion, Israel has been retraining its army in the north. That has raised tensions with neighbouring Syria, and sparked fears of a war between the two old rivals.
“The Israelis are trying to tell the Syrians, ‘Don’t support a resurgence of Hezbollah in Lebanon’,” the US official said.
— Israel warned Gaza’s leaders to expect serious retaliation after a rocket hit an Israeli military base, wounding at least 40 sleeping army conscripts.
The rocket was launched by the radical Palestinian faction Islamic Jihad, in collaboration with the smaller Popular Resistance Committees. It hit the Zikim base, less than a mile from the Gaza Strip, in the middle of the night. It was the highest number of casualties from a single rocket.

why shouldn't Israel bomb the Syrian/Iranian missiles that are headed for the Hizbolah terrorists? I mean seriously, you have Syria and Iran calling for the total destruction of Israel, death to all who inhabit the place and they have a proxy army trying to wipe out Israel... What would you do, let them kill your innocent people.
Whoever the person above is that compares UK bombing a lorry in France... Wake up mate. France and the UK are allies... The French would do it themselves... There is no comparison to be made here.
joe, new york, usa / new york
To Simon, London.
I would buy into your scenario except for one problem....Syria allows and will not stop the (truck bomb) arms, thus giving Israel the right to strike.
In your scenario, I would assume France would stop such a shipment. If not, then UK would have the right to strike it also.
Syria is not the innocent victim here.

Syria and Israel have been at war since 1948. Syria has attacked Israel in 1948, 1967 and 1973. Prior to 1967 for many years Syria rained down artillery shells from the Golan Heights onto Israel's collective farms below. Syria has never agreed to enter into a treaty of peace with Israel -- only armistice agreements from time to time.
Currently the Arabs in Gaza are firing rockets into Israel. One may wonder if those currently fussing about Israel's action have ever complained about the 1,000 plus rockets fired from Gaza into Israel since the Israelis voluntarily departed from Gaza and turned over its political control to the Arabs. .

Israel did what Israel needed to do. If they keep planning the destruction of Israel then what do they expect.Go Israel!!!
JK, Huntington Beach, California
Much more fun to come. Expect the complete vapourisation of all Iranian and Syrian military capacity within the year. (Noticed how quiet 'President' Hyenajad had become?) Hizzy and Humsy will die too then. Peace and justice at last.
Maynard, Oxford, UK
If this had been Syria attacking Israel the Bush would have been beside himself. The reality is we live in the law of the jungle, if the Americans and the Israelis want to live like this the muslim world can behave like this too. Expect retaliation from Hezbollah, and from groups in Iraq and Afghanistan. Seems like the Israelis learnt nothing from last years assault on Lebanon. Roll on round 2.
Akram, London,
I wonder if Syria will target a shipment of arms from America as a retaliation.... It would only be fair, after all ;-)
Raymon, London,
If two countries want to supply guns and weapons to one another, then I dont think that there is anything that a third country can do about it, especially if the two countries have common border. Israel has no option but to plead with with Syria or Lebanon to stop such shipment of weapons. But it chose to bomb a weapons dump thinking that this might scare Syrians into stopping trade with Lebanon. The danger is that this sort of tactic has potential of igniting a war. I think the three counties should open talks rather than war. Israel, Syria and Lebanon all want peace. They have fought enough wars in the past. Britain and EU should help in bringing these parties on one table.
Z Hussain, Rochdale, UK
I trust the UN Security Council will be meeting to address this latest flagrant act of aggression, breach of the UN Charter and threat to international peace and security?
And what will they do to punish the offending state, I wonder?
Andrew Turvey, Nottingham, England
Rodney, rodney, rodney.
Israel and syria are still at war from decades ago. They never actually were able to agree on something resembling a peace treaty. And only a vague cease fire has been in operation for years.
pete, Accrington, UK.
Imagine that instead of happening in the Middle East, this happened in Europe. Imagine that MI6 determined that terrorists were travelling in a lorry through France, which lorry is loaded with a bomb that intelligence suggests is being driven to London to be exploded.
If Britain then flew its aircraft to France, dropped bombs on the truck in French territory, there would be absolute uproar. Why should it be acceptable for Israel to take these steps in territory that does not belong to them (not that they have ever been bothered about invading, colonising or attacking territory that does not belong to them in the past...)? Just because it is Israel, does not give it any more right that any other country to do this.
Simon, London,

Unprovoked agression?
A targeted strike to destroy weapons shipments in retailiation for a rocket attack that wounded 40.
Hardly unprovoked, and considering what Israel did to Lebanon last year, I'd shy away from calling it aggression too.
Dominic, Manchester, UK
Peace can only be realised if countries in the region recognise Israel as a self determined nation state and its right to exist.
Peace is realise when these countries sign to a regional non-proliferation treaty, including Iran whom have to abandon its nuclear ambitions.
Proliferation in this region is a concern for the peace and stability in the Middle East.
Israel has every right as do any other state in the region to stop proliferation.
We know Iran is playing a proxy regional war outside its borders and this is a concern as well for Israel.
The Director, LONDON, England
More of this should be going on. Syria and Iran need to feel pressure militarily and financially. God bless the US, Israel and the Brits who have the balls to make it happen.
Tom Johnson, Jackson, Wyoming
Perhaps the UN should concentrate on enforcing the countless resolutions relating to Israeli occupation and human rights abuses as a possible cause for the unrest, rather than condemning Syria for defending its airspace.
It seems that it is fine for an ally of the US to flagrantly ignore international law by using the convenient 'war on terror' catchphrase.
'Pre-emptive strike' is another word for 'unprovoked aggression'
Az, Auckland, NZ
Its doesn't matter what are Israelis will do or doing to those terrorists right or wrong Israel always will be blamed and condemned...

I belive Israel must and have the right to take on such rockets and weapons piles in Syria,Lebanon,Gaza or elswere to secure the quite--I don't personally believe it will be any kind of peaceful solution in there anywhen soon.
Good for you, and Israel is the real friend USA has in this part of the world.
Don, Brooklyn, USA
Glad to see supply of weapons to Lebanese Hizbollah destroyed - god wants nothing to do with these criminal mafias......!
In the real world, however, Israel has just declared war on Syria.
It was just a little warning, they say, well.... I think we should ask the UN if such warnings are acceptable in international law !
They certainly are doable in the law of the strong.....
Rodney, London, UK
Why has the UN not intervened to prevent Syria and Iran from breaking the cease fire agreement ?
Ben Morris, Liverpool, UK
Syrians reported that plains "broke sound barrier" - hinting on a loud bang in the desert - could it be trucks full of Iranian rockets exploding?
