TEHRAN Iranians have been urged to adopt austerity measures to limit the impact of possible international sanctions as a result of Tehran’s drive to become a nuclear power Mostafa Pour Mohammadi, the Interior Minister, marking the 28th anniversary of the seizure of the US Embassy in Tehran, said Iranians should cut back on consumption to ensure that any sanctions imposed on the country had no effect.
His remarks come as the UN Security Council considers more sanctions against Tehran.
“All of us in our households can bring down our consumption expenditure by 10 per cent,” he said. “We need to send a call to the young people.”
Iran’s energy consumption has become a serious issue in recent winters, when excess demand has caused gas shortages. The minister said that petrol rationing – imposed this year to reduce dependence on foreign imports – had reduced consumption by 25 per cent already and was an example of what could be done. (AFP)

Iran's people should be encourage to tighten their belts. The tighter the better.
Severe sanctions are the only thing that will convince the Iranians to give up their plans to build nuclear weapons & prevent war breaking out in that region.

The whole affair verges on the comedic. Iran is bankrupt, it has a poor and dysfunctional government, its people are oppressed and poor, and it has the rest of the Mid-East governments nervous because another loser of a government, Syria, has joined with it, along with two other Islamic impostors and State wannabes, Hamas and Hezbollah. How many impoverished Arab states and state wannabe's are the Iranian people supposed to support, all in the name of Islamic leadership? And leadership going where, exactly? Iran has all the oil it needs, but no one will invest there. It is all about political power for the Iranian ruling classes and an effort to distract the Iranian population from the internal failures of the government. It reminds me of the Soviet Union's approach to power, by propping up all the weak regimes to form a threat to the West. It was all a facade and a charade, wasn't it?

Every story has two sides.
Rakesh, Beijing,
I heard a couple of weeks back that Iran had sent Indonesia an emergency request for millions of dollars worth of credits to buy crude oil and petrol. This was because the Iranian central bank had run out of foreign currency with which keep up current levels of petrol consumption.
In short, Iran is ALREADY bankrupt. The question is, how long will the regime allow the people of Iran to suffer before changing course? Also how loyal is the Army?
Personally, I still believe that there will be a war, maybe December - January.
Richard, Norwich,
I bet the Iranian leaders won't be cutting back on anything. Let the people suffer while they get on with their evil plans to wipe out the U.S and Israel.
Unbelievable.....'Interior Minister marking the 28th anniversary of the seizure of the US Embassy in Tehran'. Says much about the Iranian leadership that they would mark this anniversary as something to celebrate. Who but an evil dictatorship would celebrate the suffering of others?
Lee, Gold Coast, Australia
Will the terrorist axis which makes up the dictatorship also cut back or is this call just 4 the peasants of iran of which there will be plenty by the time nantaz is dust.
