A claim by President Ahmadinejad that Iran has 3,000 working uranium-enriching centrifuges sent a tremor across the world yesterday amid fears that Israel would respond by bombing the country’s nuclear facilities.
Military sources in Washington said that the existence of such a large number could be a “tipping point”, triggering an Israeli air strike. The Pentagon is reluctant to take military action against Iran, but officials say that Israel is a “different matter”. Amid the international uproar, British MPs who were to have toured the nuclear facility were backing out of their Iran trip.
Even before President Ahmadinejad’s announcement, a US defence official told The Times yesterday: “Israel could do something when they get to around 3,000 working centrifuges. The Pentagon is minded to wait a little longer.” US experts say 3,000 machines running for long periods could make enough enriched uranium for an atomic bomb within a year.
Israel responded by serving notice that it would not tolerate a nuclear Iran. “Talks never did, and never will, stop rockets,” said Ehud Barak, the Defence Minister, after talks with the security cabinet.
The US and Western allies believe that Iran is using its civilian nuclear programme as a cover for weapon development. Tehran says that it merely wants to generate electricity.
Concern about Israel’s intentions has been heightened by its recent air strike on a suspected nuclear plant in Syria. In 1981 Israel destroyed Saddam Hussein’s Iraqi nuclear reactor, and as the sole — if undeclared — nuclear power in the region, it now considers Iran the most serious threat to its security. Mr Ahmadinejad has called for Israel to be “wiped off the map”.
Efraim Inbar, of the Begin-Sadat Centre for Strategic Studies in Tel Aviv, said that the figure of 3,000 centrifuges would signal the ability of Israel’s arch-foe to produce the nuclear material needed for a warhead. “I wouldn’t be surprised if we do something if the international community leaves us alone,” he said. “I think we [Israel] are preparing for it. For Israel this is a critical technological moment.”
Tehran says it plans to expand its enrichment programme to up to 54,000 centrifuges at Natanz in central Iran, which would amount to industrial-scale uranium enrichment.
Mr Ahmadinejad, speaking yesterday at a rally, said that UN sanctions had failed to halt uranium enrichment. “The world must know that this nation will not give up one iota of its nuclear rights . . . if they think they can get concessions from this nation, they are badly mistaken,” he said. He has in the past claimed that Iran succeeded in installing the 3,000 centrifuges at its uranium enrichment facility but yesterday’s speech was the first time he had said all of them were now operational.
The International Atomic Energy Authority recently put the figure at closer to 2,000, with another 650 being tested. The IAEA said yesterday: “We will be publishing a report next week. We will not make any comment about this until then.” Javier Solana, the EU foreign policy chief, is shortly to report on Iran’s willingness to give up uranium enrichment in exchange for political and trade incentives.
In London, at least five members of the Commons Foreign Affairs Committee were refusing to take part in the planned trip to Iran, arguing that it would hand the regime a propaganda coup. The visit, to begin on Sunday, would be the first by a select committee since 15 British Service personnel were held in March. That incident and evidence that the regime is supporting insurgencies in Afghanistan and Iraq and planning to build a nuclear bomb has strained relations with Britain.
About eight MPs, from all three main parties, are still planning to spend four days in Iran next week.
Eric Illsley, a Labour MP who is one of those to have pulled out, said: “I really don’t fancy having pictures of me next to an Iranian nuclear facility beamed around the world.”
— Intelligence agencies have begun to vet all foreign postgraduates applying to study sensitive scientific subjects in Britain. The aim is to prevent Iranian students getting expertise in fields related to producing weapons of mass destruction. Sixty Iranians have been refused university places this year.

If it is common knowledge that Israel would launch an attack on Iran when they have the capability of 3,000 centrifuges why would Iran announce that they are at that stage. Are they trying to provoke Israel into attacking them?
Richard, London, UK
I can't help thinking how happy George Bush and John MCcain would be if Israel attacks Iran.Suddenly the fifteen points Obama enjoys are gone.Another war,who do you want a polished speaker or a Vietnam vet. This is the last war.

V felt sick of 9/11 attack and sympathize with victims. US blamed Osama n went after him in Afghanistan. What has this to do with Iran? Or Iraq? U can't lump all the Muslim countries. Your friends died innocently but the people you might killed could also be innocent 2.

Someone needs to say why the President of Iran is doing and saying the things that he is. He is waiting for the return of the 12th Imam and preparing for that return. However, the Imam cannot return until Israel is eliminated. The Bible has been completely dishonoured in the past few years, but it says very important things about coming world events and the importance of Israel in those events. Please read Ezekiel and Zechariah if you are sceptical.
geni, , aberystwyth, britain
I have been following cretain world events for a while now nd lets not kid our selves people, we are heading for the most destructive period of all time. ww1 &ww2 are chickn feed compared to whats waiting for us around the corner. I hope this comment gets to as many people as possible, because when the next ww comes, there wont be any place to hiide.
Sure, A merica is throwing its wait around and has its own hidden agenda for the future of the world, but remember that america is a important pivotal point when it comes to keeping anti western and hostile nations at bay.
I remember hearing and reading stories of the destruction caused by japan and germany. Think about where we would be now if the USA did not enter hostilities, then.
I can see a situation when russia and america combine forces to counter what is fast bcomiing an out of control situation in the middle east. Isreal is a country that is serounded by hosile nations. they have every right to be nuclear armed
thomas ellul, sydney, australia
I am in the army.... That being said I think that people should know that while it may of been about oil before, its now about damage control now.. The entire middle east hates us now.. We're gonna have to face that. However.. pulling out now, leaving everybody alone inlcuding a country that can make nukes soon.. Not such a hot idea! My childeren yours and everybody else would have to pay for Bush's mistake. Now that being said we are going to have to "clean up the mess we made" then pull out. Then say we are sorry! How we do that I have no freakin clue but i guess thats why im not in office now isnt it. Plus Its easy for the world to point fingers.. nobody had people "friends" die at the 9/11 attacks. I dont care who you are something like that could tend to get any country on a friggen war path.. Hunting heads.. Yes! my friend died there. Yes! I re-Enlisted.. Yes! Im gonna make sure that THAT never happens again and if i have to put up with my president to get it done then so be it.

This is not about Irans nuclear material, it's really about America wanting all Irans oil for themselves and causing world war 3, Our UK government and media seem to have trouble with TRUTH, they are that bloody stupid that they don't even realise they are risking all their familys, friends and everyone in the UK's lives with all their LIES about Iran and the hoax war on terror, fabricated by the Americans and swallowed by our puppet Government here in the UK and our puppet media... SAD TIMES AHEAD.
Alan, Glasgow,
In response to Julia Iskandar's comment; I am not American, nor do I actively support them. However, before embarking on some inane (and slightly racist) rant about poor use of spelling and grammar by Americans, you may want to remember that it is also grammatically incorrect to use the word 'and' after a comma.
Mark, London,
I believe all around the world we know that Iran's intentions and ambitions for nuclear capabilities are far from peaceful. However it is over looked because the U.S. is so hated abroad that Iran is doing what other countries were afraid to do. This stance by Iran and the lack of international support to stop them is just paving the way for other countries to persue means to destroy the U.S. What countries like China, Russia, and many others who want the U.S. out of the way are failing to realize is it won't stop with there. Ahmandinejad is not a man of integrity or a man who seems to value peace nor life. If the U.S. or the stability it brings to the world ceases to exist there will be absolute chaos through out with imeminate threat of nuclear attacks for everyone. The U.S. is not perfect but word to the wise becareful what you wish for.
Kevin Armstrong, Laurel, De
The many people on this thread who cannot even master the spelling and grammar of their own language, let alone anybody else's - what makes them think they have the right to tell others what they should do and how to live? The chuzpa (impertinence) of especially the American contributors who prefer violent/apocalyptic/omnipotence fantasies to rational analysis really tells other readers a lot. Sort your own country out, and leave other people's countries alone. You might have some time then to learn some spelling and grammar, at least in your own language.
It's all about the oil, and access to the oil, but the hypocrisy of dressing the greed up AS IF you do everyone else a favour if you act on the greed and self-important fantasies, and start yet another war, that's breathtaking.
Julia Iskandar, London, England
What no one has mentioned is the Sept. 6th Israeli attack on Syria's nuclear reactor project. . . the story has been all but buried by the world's media. Why isn't Syria and the rest of the arab alliance in an uproar? Because Syria thought they were impervious to any Israeli attack with all the latest Russian defense technology they bought to protect their nuclear ambitions. The Syrians were totally blindsided and Russia was completely embarrassed by it --all that money didn't even tell them the Jews were coming. It was shortly after that Putin began taking a dramatically more defiant stance against the US--he had to save face. And Iran starting pounding its chest over how they will launch 8000 missiles when the first bomb drops. The Ruskies and the Persians are shaking in their boots, knowing they don't don't have the technology to stop it.
So . . . where's the Arab outrage? Why no response?
Ed, Paradise, USA/CA
Ahmadinejad is in error in announcing that he has 3000 fully functional centrifuges. Why give Israel the well known bully in the middleeast an excuse they have been waiting for?
If his purpose is peaceful and designed to solve Iran's energy needs why trumpet the issue?
Time for some maturity in world politcs?

My question of several hours ago was not published. It was "were Iranian nuclear installations to be bombed, what would be the danger to the population and the environment caused by radiation leakage?"
I'm not saying I want anyone to bomb anyone.

Eric,
I do not have a rosy view of my government at all in the general sense - in fact I do not support a dictaorship government of any sort , be it my own government or any other - for your information; hear it from the horse's mouth: not many people like the present government in my country.
Nevertheless, what I did try to say and say it again, is that the IRI's foreign policies are based on friendship towards most countries and they will never start a war on another nation - you should believe me when I say this because I am opposed to the Mullahs government on virtually every issue except their nuclear technology development issue.
I am afraid my knowledge of nuclear science is very limited, hence I am not in a position to have an intelligible debate about it - but I have HEARD that the nuclear technology has got many other uses apart from generation of energy or making an atom bomb - may be you could correct me on this?
Hamid Shirazi, Tehran, Iran
I think everyone needs to step back and really think about why the Iranian president is ultimately instigating a conflict. If Israel attacks and then we follow suit with support then fundamentally Iran would get a boost in support and so would any raidical elements in the Middle East. Of course a lot of people will die but I am not sure anyone is really thinking about the civilian element and the thousands upon thousands of deaths that will occur from any attack on Iran. Only leaders that care for their people actually deserve support and any military action in this regard is a declaration that that is not in the least a priority.
The whole context of this argument should not be on the crazy Iranian president or the crazy US president or the crazy Israeli leaders. The current conflict with Iran and its nuclear capability can not be won by force only diplomacy and true compromise. Blaming an pointing fingers only plays right into the lunatics who will be safe and secure as millions of people will be at risk of death and devastation. It is not Israel or the US or Iran that is the problem it is the small fraction of deviant psychos that somehow amassed power. The people who will pay dearly for military action against Iran are the common people like you and I. If that is what you want keep shouting back and forth about the good guy and bad guy.
Michael, SJ, United States

reaction to hamid: ever heard of a light-water reactor? not only safer, but also does NOT require any weapons grade uranium or plutonium, which might be a nice idea if you are really not at all interested in a nuclear bomb. like you say: very shrewd people....would you trust the leadership of Iran? forgive me for not sharing your rosy view of the government of Iran....
eric, london, uk
Edward from worcester,
Stop being so thick - yes Iran has large oil reserves but it will only last for so long and eventually it will run out - besides, if Iran could have cheaper means of energy which the nuclear energy offers, it can then sell the oil and use the revenue for better uses - it is all a matter of good economy, is it not?!
Lots of you are brainwashed and don't know about the Mullahs that much . The Mullahs are very shrewd people who would never instigate a war, nuclear or otherwise, on another country even on Israel. In any case the MAIN MAN "Ayatollah Khamenei" repeatedly has mentioned that Islam is against keeping or using WMD and I tend to believe him because I can tell when the Mullahs are telling a lie! And in this case HE is telling the truth and not lying.
Despite, how Ahmadinejad portrays himself in the public he is a harmless man - I would say he is his own enemy in the sense that he is not very diplomatic in the way he presents his message.
Hamid Shirazi, Tehran, Iran
Some of you seem surprised by our US cousins reactions to the Big Bad Wolf that is every Islamic country and their blind belief that Israel is a cuddly, helpless bunny surrounded by evil. As someone who lived in NYC for 3 years; before, during and for about 1 year after 9/11 and witnessed first-hand how this nation is swayed to these, in my opinion, extremist views.
I will never forget a New York Post headline tha screamed " Got Them" in relation to Israel's murder of 2 Palestinian political leaders (as an Irishman I take the view that, one man's terrorist is anothers freedom fighter, particularly as Palestine is illegally occupied) , then as I read the stiry in full it was not until got to the final paragraph that it says, oh, and by the way 23 women and children were also killed, but they were in the way of the gunship's missiles so its their own fault.
This is just 1 example of the pro-Israel lobby in the US, poor little Israel that tripled it's borders in the 6 day war in 1967
Pat, David, Panama
I would like to mention the sacrifices by the bomber crews of the RAF as well as the Norwegian people to deny the development of a nuclear device by the Nazis. Heros of Telemark was more of a story than could ever have been portrayed in a film. Anybody disagree that the pre-emptive strike against the Nazi facilities was fair.?
Mike Burkinshaw, Vilagarcia de Arousa, Galicia/Spain
Iran is on its way to becoming the regional hegemonic power in the middle east. That is its long term goal and there' s not a lot of doubt about it. Not many countries are happy about it. Especially Saudi Arabia.
Iran is a theocratic state run by a single grand ayatollah who may be politically savvy, but who is stuck with a popularly elected loose cannon of a president. Ahmadenijad impresses the west as VERY unstable.
Iran's recent history has been to thwart international convention, rules of engagement, and decent behavior at every turn. The state sponsors terrorism, kidnaps diplomatic staffs, abducts sailors, and suppresses its people. It's agents are at work worldwide fostering resentment against the west and instigating violence.
As a non-democratic state that operates outside the conventions of the international community, without internal checks and balances, it is not a country the World can trust with a nuclear weapon. Mullahs simply cannot be trusted not to use a bomb.
Scott, Durham, NC, USA
Bombing Iran without proof of their mal-intent would be detrimental to anyone involved with the attack. This is obviously a political game of "chicken "to see who makes the first mistake. The united states should distance themselves from Israel before the situation reaches its boiling point. The U.S and it's allies do not have the support, politically and/or financially.. Israel should handle this on their own if they plan to move ahead with any air strikes.
Justin Terranova, New York , NY
USNavy vet:
Here are some facts for you:
FACT ONE: the presisdent of Iran is NOT the leader of Iran the Ayatollah is, changing the president won't make any difference.
FACT TWO: he never actually said the much misquoted words "wipe israel off the map", look the speech up on the internet it's not hard to find.
FACT THREE: Anyone with a brain knows that Israel has illegally and illicitly developed nuclear weapons, if they can do it why can't anyone else? Who are we to say who should and who shouldn't have them? Your country is the only one on earth that has actually used them on other human beings so if anyone shouldn't have them it should be the USA.
Don't get me wrong, I don't like or support the Iranian Terror State, but neither do I like people posting Neocon/Israeli propaganda they have absorbed from the American media into intelligent debates......
J Roberts, Manchester, UK
The Arab people generally have every right to want Israel, in its present form, done away with. If it were replaced by the land of Palestine, which is what it was prior to 1948 and had been for at least a thousand years, and if the Palestinian people who (with the connivance of US/UK politicians) were forcibly evicted by the political Zionists, and their descendants, were allowed back into the country which was stolen from them, then there is a faint possibility of peace in the Middle East. Of course, as Israel is still stealing land from the Arab people, and does not wish to disgorge land it occupies illegally and, armed and financed by America as it is, it does not really want peace. Sadly, the Palestinian and Arab people are paying the price for European anti-Semitism of the 1930s and 1940s.
Neil, Gloucestershire, England
Israel will not raise a finger against Iran. They haven't got the courage or the capability. They only have the courage to missile old wheelchair bound men from helicopters.
Alfonso Parelli, London, UK
Israel let their enemy get in a first strike at the Yom Kippur War in October 1973. Barak, at least, understands that to do so this time is unthinkable. It is bhard to imagine Israel acquiescing to an American demand to allow their country to be irradiated for the next several thousand generations. And it does not appear that the U.S. has any intentions of making this demand now. Make your plans accordingly.
Jean Laffitte, Kalgoorlie, Australia
Nuke's are political weapons and are used for leverage in international affairs. Just ask the newest members of the club: Pakistan and India. Frankly, Iran would be crazy NOT to develop the weapons in order to maintain some parity with it's neighbors.
Bombing Iran, if executed, will be the beginning of the end of the US and Israel's special relationship for the past 7 years. Like the stock market, that relationship is overleveraged (mutual paranoia) and needs a correction.
Here are a few facts to remember consider while formulating an opinion on US/Israeli relations:
*1967 Israeli attack on USS Liberty. 137 US sailors killed.
*1980's Jonathan Pollard delivered 1000 top secret documents to Israel
*1990's Development of NEOCONS by prominent Jewish Americans.
*2000's AIPAC is caught receiving documents from Pentagon official (also a neocon).
Coincidence? The Iranians aren't doing anything the US, or Israel, or any other nation would do: protecting THEIR national interests.
Rhetorician, Philadelphia, USA
Forget all the blather you all are reading here and just focus on this:
Fact One: The LEADER of Iran proclaims in public that he wants to "wipe Israel from the face of the earth."
Fact Two: Anyone with a brain knows Iran is trying to obtain nuclear weapons.
The rest is all background noise. Something needs to be done to:
A.Prevent Iran for obtaining nuclear weapons.
or
B.Change the leadership in Iran to a less insane one.
Choice A is by far the easiest, we just need to get it done.
USNavy vet, Oneida, NY, United States of America
imagine some orange creatures coming out of some different galaxy. You tell them, we have two different kinds of people on earth: good people and bad people. Some have devastating weapons, some don't. Then you try to explain to them that in fact, it's the good ones that actually have the weapons....the bad ones don't. Sometimes they think about having a nano fraction of what the good guys have in terms of weapons, but the good world goes ballistic!
I bet you the creature will start scratching it's head. if it has one!

Isreal is playing a dangerous game of chess. if they attack Iran, every nation in the middle east will most likely retaliate. They do not care for isreal in that region. They are making there own problems and they should pay the consicuence. It's time to cut ties with the little nation that thinks its all that.
Paul, Baltimore, md
re: Dayahka, Aberdeen, Washington
I think you misunderstand the danger of nation like Iran with nukes. Of course Iran would never drop one on Tel Aviv because the backlash would mean the end of Iran. Instead, its more likely that they would "lose track" of one and then play dumb about how it ended up in extremist hands. Or maybe it would just mean that Iran will begin more fearlessly and openly supporting groups like Hezbulla and Hamas. Think for a second about how Iran could turn the world upside down without ever firing one of their nukes.
People that are against Israel in this argument have not thought through the real implications of Iran with the technology to produce nukes.
dave, boston, ma, USA
Terence, I believe that most Arabs originated many millenia ago in central Arabia, though of course all humanity originally came from Africa as far as paleontologists know. Arabs certainly didn't arrive from Europe 60 years ago and institute a supremacist state in another people's nation, making its people refugees or putting them in camps in their own nation which they had inhabited continuously - though under a series of empires and occupations, including the Assyrians, Ancient Israel and Judah, the Romans and the Ottomans - for millenia. And no, this in no way excuses the evils done to the Jewish people in Arabia or anywhere else - I don't believe one evil EVER justifies or negates another . I do believe that until there's one secular state for all people of every and no faith there, this vicious cycle of hatred will continue.
At present I think we're coming very close to WW 3 and have to choose between co-existence and no existence - I'll go for the first option, thanks.
Ruth , Salwa, Kuwait
No Muslim country is ever going to nuke Isreal. On the otherhand, Isreal may very well nuke a muslim country if they feel they are justifiably prevoked.
My hopes are that some country will come up with an efficient renewable energy source. That will make the middle east only really important to the people that live there, which is the way it should be.
Greg, Gainesville, Georgia
To have nuclear weapons within a democratic, civilized free society governed by responsible governments is bearable
(usa, uk, france, russia etc.)
To have a loudmouth fanatic as head of state, with a government of bearded bigots ruling over an opressed, captive society -devoid of any weapons of mass destruction - is bearable too ( castro, bin-laden, most of the arab "states"...)
Appending nuclear weapons to the fanatic ruler ? UNBEARABLE (see Hitler, Kim et.al)

Suppose Isreal announced that Iran should be wiped off the face of the Earth. Do you think the world would handle them with the same kid gloves they are using with Iran today? I don't think so. If that KnuckleHead in Tehran wasn't shooting his mouth off all the time I might have been inclined to give him the benifit of a doubt but not anymore. He has made his intentions perfectly clear and now he sits back and laughs at the world as they try to read between his lines because they refuse to accept what he so plainly stated. When is the world going to realize he is playing us as a fool?
Tom, Clay Township, Mich
Do u believe this ! How can Israel take action without USA approval ? every thing will be decided jointly.
Secondly democracy in ISrael it is for chosen few and does not extend into occupied territories. democracy can also generate evil e.g colonialism, slavery, etc.
Lets wait for the fire Works!
Aéjaz, broughton,
These people do not understand that Iran IS a nuclear power, not with respect to a nuclear bomb, but with a 'dirty bomb'. All the Iranians have to do is load a warhead with nuclear material. Even if the Intercepters hit their target it would be equivelant to an airburst spreading radioactivity. The Iranians have a lot more missiles than we have Interceptors.
Think about the consequences if this happens- The green Zone willbe turned into The Uninhabited Zone-- Untold tens of thousands of our troops would die if our bases were hit by 'Dirty Bombs'--- Isreal would suffer terribly. After an attack by either Isreal or the U.S. using tactical nuclear weapons what would they have to lose? Remember we could not take out Saddam's Scuds which were primitive to what Iran has.
George Clark, Rossville, GeorgiaUSA
You're all missing the point: Iran has signed the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty wherein they agreed not to develop nuclear weapons. The treaty entitles them to peaceful use of nuclear energy. Why then have they tried to hide and obfuscate their nuclear program for years? Because they're hiding something. They can withdraw from the treaty like N.Korea did and be forthright but they choose to be deceptive.
Israel does what every country does-defend its people the best it can. They happen to be a small country surrounded by "neighbors" who allow weapons and guerillas to flow through to kill them at will. Iran funds these activities and demonstrates its hostility every day.
The U.S. can try to deter Iran by parking a nuclear sub in the Persian Gulf but Israel has always been reluctant to trust its security to others. Think of all the nuke close calls the US and USSR had during the Cold War (Cuba, etc). Do we want Israel and Iran living on such a hair trigger existence? No
Joe M., New York, NY
How on earth can you say Israel doesn't threaten it's neighbors??? You have obviously eaither chosen to ingnore the fact of Israel air bombing Palestine and Lebanon or are extremely uninfromed. If Iran chooses to make nuclear plants to produce energy, then we should let them. Remember the last time the west accused a middle estern country or having WMD? Any formal action against Iran from facist Israel or it's allies can be compared to Hitler in WWII. Ahmadinejad has said he wants Israel wiped off the face of the earth. Where has he stated he has the intent to do this or the support to do this? This is clearly another example of what we've learned since WWII: how to run a good facist state and oppress those we do not support. When will we wake up and see this?

Surprised you have not heard of the hydrogen bomb!
Its time someone lanced the Iranian boil before the situation in the gulf gets really serious, like a blockade of the wests oil supply by a nuclear power and all that would entail.
mike mines, london, uk
>> Is Iran going to make one nuclear bomb, drop it on Tel Aviv, and then get wiped off the face of the Earth?
YES, YES, YES they will, because they think that it will bring about the caliphate.
>> Only crazy people, like those in the US and Israel, would think that.
Itâs not crazy according to Ahmadenejad, and his opinion on what HE will do with a nuke is more valid than YOUR opinion.
Jon, USA,
Maybe some of you have gone crazy. Iran's president has publicly stated that he intends to "wipe the Zionist regime {Israel} off of the Mapâ and is pursuing nuclear weapons to either 1) use on Israel or 2) hold the world at bay while it invades Israel. This nonsense about Iran pursuing nuke for electrical generation is so transparent... they're floating on oil! Why would they want nuke for electricity? Let's think critically. Have you noticed Putin getting cozy with Adminijian? Iran feels comfy with world defiance because it secretly has Putinâs backing. Putin wants oil to build Russia's economy and infrastructure. Adminijian wants Israel gone because, well, he is a nutcase. Both have a history of Allying against Israel- War of Yom Kippur. Isreal knows It's only a matter of time before they get "whacked" or they must strike preemptively. It's a matter of survival for Israel and everyone who is willing to look at the situation objectively can see it plainly. Don't be so naive!

I am just as concerned about nukes in the hands of the crazy jingoists in Israel as I am about Iran's nuclear potential. The Israelis have shown themselves to be aggressive, and belligerant, while pursuing a hate-thy-neighbor foreign policy.
The Israelis are where they wanted to be and knew in advance they were moving into a very hostile neighborhood. Tell me, is that rational?
Edith , Atlanta, GA
Enough with the "wiped off the map" garbage!!!
Ahmadinejad said that Israel would disappear like the USSR, or "vanish from the page of time" and was not threatening to attack the country. Get it right!! geesh

Jake, Newport,
If Israel wants to start a war with Iran, thats their business. The U.S. should not be involved in it in way shape or form.
One has to ask, what would George Washington and the founding fathers do? They would look to the constitution and not intervene and not get involved with costly foreign entanglements.
Or you can just look at what Ron Paul is saying how we should act in this situation.
Robert, Cooper City, Florida
It would appear that we are really getting to the crunch time.
The Americans "fear" an Isreali strike against Iranian nuclear facilities.
How did we get to this point. Was it a "laissez-faire" attitude of American political establishment that allowed Israel to become so arrogant and preposterous; was it the fact that every time the UN tabled a motion condemning Isreal, the US exercised its veto thus saving the day for Israel, or was it rather the example the US set for Isreal by invading Iraq on false pretences?
Facts stand before the eyes of all those who just care about keeping their eyes open.
If it is true that Israel is now seriously considering a surgical move against Iran, I hope someone in the American administration just tell the Isrealis they will not be able to buy petrol at subsidized prices.
T Ochrymowicz, Massignano, Italy
John Palmer, Chippenham, UK - the world will condem Israel for attacking its neighbors when you start condemning Hezbollah and Hamas for attacking Israel.
David, New York, USA
I have done extensive research and can't seem to find information on the last time an israeli suicide bomber drove in to a neighboring territory and proceeded to blow themselves and innocent bystanders up. Can someone here point me to that information. Do people really believe that if Isreal just picked up and moved itself to another part of the world that there would be peace in the Middle-East? What would happen is that part of the world would turn into another African continent where there is constant military coups and regime changes. The leaders of Middle-Eastern countries preach hatred towards Isreal as a way to keep there people from focusing on how horrible there living situation truly is. What are the unemployment rates in Palestine? Lebanon? If the citizens of those countries all of the sudden had no Isreal to hate and started looking at themselves and their lives the leaders would find themselves in a very bad situation.
christopher, Dallas,
the allies didn't allow hitler to develop nuclear weapons, why would the allies including israel allow another amoral ,megalomaniac to have the same. chamberlain tried to give peace in his time, all hitler wanted was a piece of all the rest of the non nazi world. evil is evil and must be contained. no one took mein kampf seriously. these crazies need to be taken at their words
ira copeland, las vegas,
I love to review comments like many on this post. I am truly amazed at the true lack of in depth thought and the amazing amount of complacency in the world. Never before has anyone stood up in front of the world and declared that a group of people should be wiped off the face of the earth and "pushed into the sea" If I read history correctly another madman had similiar words and actually acted them out or tried - Hmm Hitler comes to mind - It took great courage then to deal with that level of Madness and it may require it again in the near future.
Christopher, Columbus, Ohio
John Palmer has a point. The Poles started WWII by tricking the Nazis into attacking them. Now Iran is the victim by announcing it's intention to build nuclear weapons in order to wipe out the dreaded Jews. Only a warmonger would possibly take the Iranians seriously, only a warmonger would seek to defend himself from the fascistic theocracy in Tehran.
Mr Palmer is a Dhimmi, whether he knows it or not. He is fit only to pay the jizhya and live a live enslaved to the Shari'a. Hopefully, enough people in the West are still convinced that freedom, individual liberty, and Western civilization still matter enough to fight back against the primal scream of that 7th century barbarism emanating from various Middle Eastern satrapies.

I wish people would consider the fact that Israel is a tiny place surrounded by a vast sea of Muslims, many of whom believe that territory owned by Muslims always belongs to Muslims and occupiers must be thrown out (to put it nicely).
If Israel gives up the West Bank, or the Golan Heights, it puts itself at great risk. It's like a goth having his hands tied and then going to a party for chavs.
The Bible predicted that Israel would become desolate, and that in the latter days the people would come back and settle, and that the nations would come against it. That seems to have come true.
The Bible also says that those who bless Israel shall be blessed, and those who curse shall be cursed. Look at the floods and the fires in The USA lately, which occurred at times when Bush has pushed the peace process / land give-away. Coincidence?
Chris, UK,
Untill congress admitts that the Israeli government owns 2/3rds of congress of the USA only then can the congress come back to defending the USA honorably..Every member of congress should read the book "The ISraeli Lobby" by John J. Mearsheimer and Stephen G. Walt .to really undertand that lobby's influence over Americans of Jewish persuation, 43 in the house and 13 in the senate..
EM Tacik, Cressona , PA
Mr. Fennell, are you saying getting rid of a"Zionist Regime" is fine as long as you preserve the Jews in Iran? So much for the state of Israel then...the United States and Israel will never allow Iran to have any chance at develeping nuclear weapons.
Period. And our friends in Europe will have to live with it.
Peter Krug, Washington, DC
What annoys me is hearing Russian president Putin telling off the USA and Israel for talking about getting heavy-handed with Iran, while all the time Russia has bypassed the 'talking' stage and is actually getting heavy-handed with Georgia.
Not only that but the Russian Civil Service has been accused of stirring up the unrest in Georgia in the first place. And if Russia says that the USA is wrong to slap economic sanctions on Iran, why did Russia closed all transport and postal communications to Georgia? And isn't it funny how this happened at a time when Georgia is getting chummy with the West?
Lovely Russia is not quite as peace-loving as we would like to believe, and obviously is very anti-democracy / pro-communism.
Chris, UK,
Nuclear weapons are not new technology. People need to learn about electromagnetic weaponry, and fear the loss of everything that uses electricity. Research "scalar weaponry" and you'll laugh at nuclear.
The countries who possess those weapons have something to brag about, but no one knows who they are. When the Iranian dictator becomes too noisy for Putin, and for China, then they will tell him to shut up.
Lastly, of the 70+ comments I have read, only one refers to the Bible. And I'm talking about the Old Testament. Not talking about the politically-incorrect New Testament, but about the books of Ezekiel, and Daniel. The end of the world prophesied by the Bible, not by some evangelical rhetoric from a pulpit.
Only narrow-mindedness denies fact.

Unfortunately, the world is not black and white. It would be easy to tell the good guys from the bad. England lived through the blitz and through the IRA bombings. But to the Germans and the Irish the acts of those times were justified. Would the world be better off with or without Israel or with or without Iran. Probably neither. There are good people (and bad) in each country. Most Iranians love and respect the west and most western values. Yet, a strike will only push them towards a more radical path. We should expend our efforts to support the quiet revolution in Iran and therefore our interests will be best spent.
The bungled war in Iraq only radicalizes our enemies who now have more grievences to avenge.
Massoud faraj, NYC, USA
Israel will wait until the 2008 election nears before they bomb Iran. This is a timing issue. One which contibutes to the election of a Republican president. The White House will ask Israel to holdoff and Israel shall oblige because it is in her best interest to do so.
Ben Barrow, Jacksonville Beach, FL
Ahmadinejad said he wants rid of the "Zionist Regime", not Israel. Look and the translation from sources other than the west controlled media.
If he wants to 'get the Jews', then why does he allow 15,000 plus live in Iran? So anti-semitism is not the think either.
If it's because they can't have 'Weapons of Mass Destruction' then why can the US use bunker-busters on civilians, not to mention the depleted-uranium tipped weapons leading to generational cancer?
Such hypocrisy by so many people.
Bombing Iran is part of the plan.
Matthew Fennell, Manchester, UK
Andrew Cordery - rhetorically, I assume - asks why Iran doesn't channel its resources into nuclear fusion development if it "really wants nuclear power for peaceful purposes". Let us assume the latter is true. (We all know that's nonsense on stilts, but just the same let's pretend.) The reason Iran wouldn't pursue fusion (again, go with me here, that Iran is run by reasonable people) is that the maturity of fusion technology for power generation is laughably low. It may NEVER prove viable. Any investment now can only be classified as research, not development. If one wants to pursue nuclear power generation without the drawbacks of light-water reactor technology, one should look into thorium-fueled molten-salt reactors. Thorium is abundant (unlike uranium), the reactors are inherently fail-safe, the waste is radioactive for only ten years, and the technology was demonstrated decades ago. It's time has come.
David, Huntsville, USA
Only a fool would fail to see the danger posed by a nuclear armed Iran. Self perservation is the first order. Every nation on earth but particularly Iseral has the right to stop Iran simply by virtue of such right. If it be hypocrisy, make the most of it.

Its funny all these muslims and their sympathisers whining about how the Israelis kicked the "indigenous" arabs out of "palestine".
Firstly where do the Arabs come from?
Secondly why did the Arabs kick the 800,000 Jews out of their countries.
Thirdly - what about my rights as an indigenous Cornish person whose ancestors had their land stolen by the English and their successor immigrants? What about Cornish descended Australians who have no right to live in the UK ? Shall we be surprised when these people fight back Palestinians supporters in the UK????

People must know that Ahmadinejad claimed Olmert was using the Holocaust as a reason to bomb Lebanon in 2006. This is the context about wiping Israel came from. As Bush used 9-11 to justify his tyranny, So went Olmert. Its all defensive in its naked aggression. He also had many scandals going on and these words were used to divert attention and garner public support for Israel and Olmert.
Beware of demagogues of all sorts.

Well said, John Palmer. Why can Israel do no wrong in the eyes of so many Americans? It is Israel that has been in flagrant breach of a UN Resolution for 40 years. It is Israel that has nuclear weapons without disclosing the fact. It is Israel that bombs or invades other countries. And we in the West wonder why the Islamic World calls us hypocrites.
Peter Berman
Peter Berman, Wiveliscombe, UK
Sorry, John Palmer, but Iran is not entitled to have nuclear weapons because they are a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NNPT) which states that no other nations besides the five established nuclear powers (US, Russia, UK, France, & China) are allowed nuclear weapons. [You may call that unfair, but that is what the treaty allows and disallows].
By signing this treaty, Iran surrendered any legal rights to nuclear weapons.
Robert Elliott, Indianapolis, USA/Indiana
John Palmer get a clue. Your words sound (to you) so peace loving and open minded. You're an idiot. Look at history. If we don't learn from our past we will repeat the same mistakes.
Read "Because They Hate" or watch the documentery "Obsession".... or just listen to any radical Islamist propaganda. Then, dare I say it, read the Bible and get a real understanding of the problems in the the Middle East. People like you have such a "high minded, psuedo-intelligence" that you are clueless to reality. By the way, its not just Israel that these people hate with such vehement passion...its people like you & me. And you play right into their hands... sadly pathetic and extremely frightening for the survival of our nations.
Victor, Visalia, California
If and or when Israel or the U.S. bombs Iran, it will justify the intentions to rid the world of the hypocrites that have the bomb but don't want others to have it. Bombing Iran will only unite and radicalize the Muslim world. Bombing iran will not solve the problem, it will only make the problem much worse. The only countries that are safe from intimidation and bullying from the hypocrites are those countries that have the bomb, Russia, India, Pakistan, China, and France. If Pakistan didn't have the bomb, it would have already been invaded and taken over by now.
R.J., Albuquerque, N.M.
Israel definitely has a hand in perpetuating its problems with the muslim world; and better treatment of Palestinians would go a long way towards reaching out to moderates in the Islamic world. That said, it's important not to equivocate Iran's posession of nuclear weapons by saying that "well, Israel gets to have them". Let's be clear - Israeli leaders are not giving speeches in which they are proposing to destroy a whole nation of people. We often give muslim leaders carte blanche to make such threats and write them off as "hyperbole for the consumption of the locals". But when a nation has nuclear weapons such statements have a whole new meaning and it would be irresponsible for Israel, Europe, and the U.S. not to take a long hard look at what the probablities are that such threats would be acted on if they had the weapons to do so. When you have such weapons, it's a whole new ball game and Iran may have to learn this lesson the hard way.

when are the people of this world going to wake up! After New York, London and Paris are gone? Since when does a mad man pursue anything for a peaceful purpose? Iran is behind every unstable situation in the Middle East. Iran gives weapons and ad to the terrorists inside of Iraq and Afghanistan. Iran is behind Hamas in Palestine, and Hamas is behind the Infatada in Israel. Iran is behind Hezbollah in Lebanon. Iran is behind Syria lining its army along the border of Israel posed to attack. Oh but Iran deserves nuclear power.
Israel has never done anything wrong, It has only tried to protect itself. So why are the people of this world against Israel? When you line up the facts, just like everything the left supports, there is no ground to stand on.
If your next door neighbor said I am on my way to the store to buy a gun. when I come home tonight I am going to come to your house and kill you and your entire family. What would you? Go to sleep and hope he is joking?
Kevin, Boston, MA
If Iran really wants nuclear power for peaceful purposes why does it not channel its resources into Nuclear Fusion development (as the EU has in France) and help the world with green energy instead of Uranium enrichment which produces rarioactive waste lasting thousands of years. This will keep all sides happy. Nuclear fusion cannot (as yet) be used as a weapon, but nuclear fission can! We could all work together in peace for a more stable world with abundant cheap renewable energy.
Andrew Cordery BSc. DipEng. CertEd, Norwich,
Hellloooo what does "we want to wipe Israel of the map "mean. That Iran just wants to help Israel dust around the house? This is a solely a case of Israel defending its self. Just because Israel consistently defeats the other countries in its region does not make them bullies or aggressors, it just makes them the better country and by the way the only free democracy in the area.
Rich , Oceanville, NJ
If America allows Israeli planes to cross Iraqi airspace to attack Iran then they are complicit in this illegal action. Iran is entitled to have nuclear power and nuclear weapons if it desires. Nobody attacked the US, UK, Israel and other powers for acquiring this technology.
When will the world start to condemn Israel for attacking its neighbours on any pretext? They and their allies the US are the real threat to world peace.
John Palmer, Chippenham, UK
If Israel put down its weapons it would be 'wiped off the map' to quote the Iranian President. If the arab neighbours put down their weapons there would be peace or some chance of peace.

Iran wants to provoke an attack so that it can enter a war with Israel and the U.S. Iran probably already has a few nuclear weapons but cannot use them until they are attacked. Ok, this sounds like science fiction but there has been speculation that suitcase bombs are already deployed in the U.S.

Ben -
We all see how well that worked out for the Germans. Israel is perfectly within it's rights to eliminate the threat. When your country of 30 - 40 million is surrounded by 300 million people who want them dead, then yes, by all means, remove the threat.
God Bless the USA

Preemptive legal or not ?
I believe it comes down to that. Either its legal to interfere with a sovereign state before they do something or it isn't. Think of that principle, if another country did that to your country do you think that is legal ? or morally right ?
Preemptive, London,
American's and Israeli's have two of the world's most powereful 'cards' to do what ever they want across the world.

2) Israel = the holocaust card.

If the Israeli's announced that they were going to destroy their own nukes then they might have some credability. As it is they have the ability to destroy anyone who tries to destroy them. The Americans and the Russians both managed not to wipe out each other (and in my opinion they were both religious lunatics).
This is just more hipocracy and fear mongering.
Andrew, London,
A year or so ago I believe it was the Malaysian PM who said Jews get others to fight their wars for them. The usual uproar ensued. Well, In America, Jewish groups have been open and outspoken to try to get the US to fight another devastating war. All Americans should be livid. If Jews want to truly end antisemitism, I suggest they try something they've never tried befiore: change their bloody act!
Justin, NYC,
This is typical bullying from the Israelis who expect the US to justify their actions. The Israelis have complained for centuries that they've been persecuted. Maybe if they showed some respect to their neighbours then maybe the alleged persecution would stop.
Ed Penney, NY, US
Does anyone ever ask themselves why this tiny nation of Israel plays such an important role globally? What is the importance of the nation of Israel...and why do the clerics/leaders of Islamic countries (and others) want her to "disappear"? This conflict started in Genesis 3:15. It is a spiritual war that is being manifested here in the natural. It is ongoing and true peace will not come until the Prince of Peace returns.

> Mr Ahmadinejad has called for Israel to be âwiped off the mapâ.
That would solve one of the World's three major threats and reduce the number of terrorist volunteers.
The 'Israelis' can join their friends in New York and Hollywood.
That just leaves global warming and the attempts to setup a Worldwide Islamic state under Sharia law (caliphate).
Will we survive these three threats ?
I doubt it unless there is far more open and uncensored discussion about them.

Works either way doesn't it.
pete, edinburgh,
Delightful, ignorant, racist views here.
Europeans should remember that they killed half the world's Jews, which resulted in the creation of Israel as a haven for
remaining Jews. If threatened with extinction, Europeans should either stand by Israel, or stand aside as she defends herself. Listening to the Iranians flex their muscles, one has to turn to the real source of their power: Bush.
Bush's blunder in Iraq has vastly strenghtened Iran -giving it control over the 4th largest oil reserves, as well as the third largest - and Putin's Russia, which has the second largest reserves. Who benefits from $100 a barrel oil? Why are these two countries so friendly?
The fracas in Iraq has made Saudi Arabia - God help us all - the most significant remaining player in the Middle East. But their oil wealth -they are number one - can not withstand aggression from the powerful forces of a Shi'ite run Iraq and Iran, without the US. And Israel.
richard block, London, UK
Wally,
you are the one mistaken. If you can't see that Iran is a threat and is one of the "bad ones" then you need a reality check.
Joel, Spokane, WA
Iran merely wants to be considered a major force to be reckoned with and not a second class citizen in world politics. with increasing U.S. involvement in the middle east, Tehran wants to be taken seriously as a hardline Islamic nation and as someone to deal with.
It is similar to the political manuevering that Germany did prior to World War 1. Germany then and Iran now wanted to change the way they were viewed by the world. Germany used a military build up while Iran is using nuclear technology, the ultimate in advancement both politically and technologically.
Ben, Los Angeles, California, USA
Peter,
Isreal does not threaten its neighbours?
are you serious?
Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, what do you call that?
If the US gov't were soo closely influenced by Israel do you think they'd get the same free hand they get?
it's all in perspective.
nathan, vancouver, canada
I dont consider what Israel is doing is self Defence. All they do is use what happened to them (Holocaust) as an excuse to go ahead and do whatever they want, wherever they want with the full backup of the U.S. I feel sorry for what happened but till when are we going to keep living on with the past. If that is the case, and we want to go back to those days, then France should invade Lebanon, Britain to invade India, etc. That way it will all be fair.
They have to move on, people are still being bombed and dying from hunger as we speak, but all they talk about is what happened to them during the Holocaust.
I mean come one, what do you expect when country bullies all its neighboring countries, would they be loved or hated.
Finally, anyone readin this, what would you do if you are sitting in your own home, someone knocks on the door and forces you out, and then lives in your house while you are on the street with no rights? Would you fight back or just give it to him?
Thanks
Moe, Tempe, AZ
Wally, if you think that the world is divided in nations of "bad people" and "good people", you should consider visiting other countries, preferably those you think of as the "bad guys". Sometimes it pays to create your opinions less of what politicians are saying, and more of what you see is really happening.
Bombing a neighboring country and threatening to bomb others while holding the only nuclear weapons in the region, which is, what Israel is currently doing, I think can be called a threat more surely than one over-quoted phrase from an individual politician who doesn't even hold the highest executive power in the country and has never actually admitted to consider bombing anyone. These are the facts, sans all the speeches and alliances and mistrust on all sides.
I think, Peter, that you are so eager for "action" only because you have never seen it.

What does these entities have in common [ (CANADA) (ISRAEL) (AUSTRALIA) (NEW ZEALAND) (SOUTH AFRICA)(USA) ] ?
ANSWER: They are all white racist settler states.
As other nations acquire new technologies, there will be a new dispensation of wealth and power. Maybe this "new world order " will be based on slavery and war and maybe it will not.
The USA was the first to use atomic weapons on cities, but wiil they be the last to use them? The British and the Spanish were the first to use small pox on Native Americans. What's next?

It is always wise to believe the worst intentions of evil men rather than the good. Ahmadenijad is an extremely religious fundamentalist who says he is willing to sacrifice half of the Iranian population in order to defeat Israel and the West, and in so doing gurantee the return of the missing 12th Imam. It is worthwhile recalling the words of Blaise Pascal, the 17th century mathemetician who, along with Fermat, laid the foundation for the theory of probability: 'Men never do evil so completely and cheerfully as when they do it from religious conviction'.
roger radford, London, UK
How well Pat of Newcastle is informed, from her statement she must think a president who has stated twice that "must be wiped out from the map of the world" deserves to have a nuclear arsenal.....
Fred, London,
I see Israel's online sentries are on duty once again. Anyone who knows anything about history knows that Israel usually attacks its neighbours, not vice versa. Look at how the place was created in 1948 - by European newcomers kicking out the indiginous inhabitants. Imagine the Mexicans doing that in the US.
Tarek, London, UK
Sorry Peter but 'Israel does not threaten its neighbours'...geography not your strong point then?
Derek Berman, London, United Kingdom
Pat, just read your very ignorant and ill-informed comments.
Just read your history books and then list to the the Iranian President .
Maybe if UK was threatened in the same way Israel was, you might, just might, take a different view.
Phillip, Leeds, UK
Iran hasn't attacked anyone for a very long time, whilst israel has started a number of wars and is the only country in the middle east with nuclear weapons! Iran knows that if it were to attack anyone the american response would wipe it out, so they are unlikely to make the first move in any conflict.
The world should also apply equal pressure to israel for the scores of UN resolutions that it has ignored
Rich, Harrogate, UK
Peter in Washington 'Israel does not threathen her neighboyrs'...do you have any idea how absurd that comment sounds? Last year isreal killed 1,300 Lebanese, a small precentage of whom were Hezbollah; it destroyed the infrasctucture of an entire country; blew up power stations left people without basic ameniites; destroyed apartment blocks killing terrified women and children; blew up ambulances with people going for treatment; the list goes on and on; they tore up the human rghts charter and the geneva convention. They acted with shocking impunity and disgregard for world opinion ; why? because their paymasters in Washinston said they could. Despite this te Iranians who havent invaded anybody are to be anhiliated?
Brian, Dublin,
Why don't we let Saddam destroy the Iranian nuclear threat? Oh I forgot.
Steve Byrne, christchurch, UK
"Israel deos not threaten it's neighbours" is what one of the brain washed comments an American has written on this subject - Israel violates more UN resolutions than any other country with impunity, it illegally occupies the land of the Palestinians (West Bank), Syria (Golan Heights) and the Southern West tip of Lebanon (Sheba Farms) - it is the only country that has "ever increasing borders" - it has bombed Sryia and Lebanon in the last 2 years and has threatened to bomb Iran since before 911 - Ahmedinajad never said "Israel should be wiped from the map" he said "Zionism should dissapear in the pages of history" - like appartied and nazism -why does no one call for the application of ALL UN resolutions in the ENTIRE Middle East and for the entire region to be a nuclear free zone?
Michael Jabir, Leicester, UK
Pat this is not about rights to nuclear energy, its about rights to nuclear weapons. Perhaps you already know that and are just spreading misinformation. Iran must be stopped and will be stopped.
Steve, London, England
Iran's leader has clearly staed on numerous occasious that he want's to destroy Israel. Israel cannot rely on deterence, since that only works when the other side is rational. 60 years after the holocaust, Israel cannot gamble over its future. Radical Islam is a threat to the whole world. Ahmadinejad must be stoped now, before it is too late.
Joe, Tel Aviv, Israel
Iran is headed by a suicide bomber so the fears are real. One can argue that the clerics wield the real power but I don't want to wait around until he pushes the button to be proved right.
Gwilym Rhys-Jones, costa del sol, spain
As a result of the US/UK occupation of Iraq great damage has been done to Western interests worldwide. It is now much more difficult to persuade the big powers to help prevent Iranian proliferation. Alas, ex Presiden Chirac may be right - it may be to late to prevent an Iranian bomb. Just as the real danger in 2003 was not Saddam's' Iraq, but North Korea (which thankfully worries Russians, Chinese and Japanese as much as the West) so today nuclear Pakistan is far more of a danger than Iran. There there is a real possibility that nuclear materials, even a weapon, could be obtained by Al Qaeda. Whereas Iran - where Ayatlollah Kamenei and the Guardian Council - not Ahmedinejad - are the ultimate bosses - is most unlikely to make a pre-emptive attack on Israel, That would 'wipe out' Pelestine and much else too. Even Ahmedinejad - see correct translation - only demands regime change in Israel.
But with Amendinejad and Bush both sabre rattling, the risks
of a 3rd mid-East war are great.
John Pedler, Aquitaine, France
Has any of you ever been in Iran ? Does any of you read Persian. I'm pretty sure the answer is no. Hence stop repeating what the world international press is writing. Since the early '50s we have been "sionized" by the extraordinary jewish lobbying forces and have lost our common sense.
Yes, indeed Iran needs nuclear energy. Because the revenue of their oil is essential to their economy. And by using nuclear for their own needs, they can push the issue back for some years.
jpgmar, Brussels, Belgium
Pat, Newcastle -
I don't know where you get your ideas from. Israel is threatened with extinction on several fronts.
According to some, if the Jews (who only want to go on living) reply in kind to rocket attacks, they're wrong. If they cut off power to the areas from which attacks come, it's collective punishment and they're wrong. If they selectively wipe out a car in which an enemy war leader is travelling, it's assassination, and wrong. Finally in desperation they build a wall to keep the bad guys out, and they're wrong again.
What are they supposed to do, according to you? Line up meekly to be gassed?
The right to self-defence cannot be allowed to some people and not others.
Michael Bruce, Selby, Yorkshire
Dayahka if your one of the 10's of thousands of citizens in Tel Aviv that get killed by a single nuclear bomb falling on your head, I dont think you will be consoled by the fact that the Iranian nation has be taken down with you. MAD only works if niether peoples want to die, and as Iran gave birth to the modern cult of suicide bombing then MAD won't work.
Simon L, London., UK
I do not support any country on earth to have nuclear weapons, USA, UK,France, Russia and China are included.
Every body knows that Israel has its own nuclear reactor since a long time, and the Israelis were about to use their bombs during their war with Egypt in 1973, which means that Israel is ready to creat another Heroshima in the Middle East to defend its existance . Although i doubt that Iran nuclear reactors may threat Israel, I dont feel like Israel would take the risk to attack Iran, because this will lead,as US president said, to a third world war, which may effects the power balance in the world, and a new great power may emerge instead of USA.
what was mentioned in the above story means that USA is encouraging Israel to attack Iran. I believe, If USA gives the green light to Israel to do such a job, the price will be too high for all the region, and peace will be acheived among defeated countries ( Israel, palestine, syria, lebanon, Jordan, Gulf Countries, and Iran
Anwar Al Khatib, Abu Dhabi, UAE
Maybe the US fear that Iran may have the real WMD that matter, and over which in 2003 they had to stage Gulf War-2 to try to secure?

There is a reason we have permanent military bases on each side of Iran...Afghanistan and Iraq. Just because a lot of people whine about the war...Iran DOESN'T have a clue of what the U.S. is capable of. Currently we are fighting a "clean" war in Iraq (trying to keep infrastructure and civilian deaths to a minimum). If the Iranian Government pushes things...which they will...sooner or later they will make a mistake and ONE dictator will cause their entire country to be damaged to such a degree that they will never recover, regardless the price of oil. I am sure Saudi Arabia or Pakistan would be more than willing to then step in and "help" them manage their oil/country. Liberals may whine a lot, but hurt their pockets and feelings and they can get mean.

If the choice is between Israel's instincts and intelligence versus Ahmadinejad's honesty and transparency, I will choose Israel every time.

Anyone who can't see that Iran must be stopped needs to have their head examined. Israel does not threaten her neighbors. I have more respect for their government than my own. At least they ACT when their security is threatened. Here, we talk and whine, and ask the world community if it's okay...

Paul,
You are badly mistaken my friend. If your neighbor said he wanted you dead would that be OK with you ? Would you drive him to the store for ammo ? You need to learn who the good guys are. Then maybe you will figure out who the bad ones are.

Pat, UK says everyone has a right to nuke energy. If Iran were not sitting on the third-largest oil reserve on the planet, one could take such a view without puking. Iran has no more interest in nuke energy than Al Gore. Iran wants to be a hegemon, and that's all there is to it.

I have to agree with Gary. Israel has at least 200 nuclear weapons, and its mentor and banker has at least 20,000 of them scattered around the world and in the US. So, what's the big fear? Is Iran going to make one nuclear bomb, drop it on Tel Aviv, and then get wiped off the face of the Earth? Only crazy people, like those in the US and Israel, would think that.
Anyway, nuclear power is the wrong way to go to offset declining oil, but that's another issue.

I don't fear it.

I dont see what all the fuss is about, every nation on earth has the right to Nuclear energy, Israel is acting as a fascist state and a bully, and we all know what happens to bully`s in the end.
