Israel and the Palestinians have started their formal peace talks, although the first such meeting in seven years may be overshadowed by Israel's announcement of new settlements in East Jerusalem and heavy fighting in Gaza.
The talks, designed to capitalise on the regional summit in Annapolis, America, two weeks ago, come a day after Israel sent tanks into Gaza to hunt militants, triggering intense battles that left at least seven Palestinian militants dead. Some Palestinian officials had called for a boycott of the talks in protest at Israel's decision to build more than 300 new homes in Ha Homa. Israel pledged to freeze settlement building at Annapolis, and the development has caused uproar.
In Ankara, Abdullah Gul, the Turkish President, said that the plans had “shocked the whole world ... the Israeli leadership must correct this.” The Palestinians fear that the new housing will cut East Jerusalem off from the West Bank and complicate the new talks.

It's not the settlements that threaten peace talks. A house does not threaten anyone's peace. And it's not the tanks that threate peace talks. It's the terrorism that engenders the tanks that threatens the peace talks. Please get your facts in the correct order.
Anne K, PT,
Immediately before the "historic"conference between Ehud Olmert and Mehmood Abbas,Israel announces that its tank force has carried out a major"incursion"into Gaza, killing eight militants and expansion of the Har Homa Jewish settlement so as to complete the encirclement of the old city of East Jerusalem (occupied by Israel in 1967) has been approved. Not exactly what anyone interested in genuine peace would expect. But these actions only conform to the standard pattern of "negotiations"between Israeli and Palestinian leaders.
With continuing settlement activity, how long will it be before it becomes obvious to all and sundry that the establishment of any kind of Palestinian state from which Jewish settlements are excluded is just not possible?
What will be the available choices then?

All the peace efforts to resolve the Israel-Palestine conflict have been waste of time and effort. It has been demonstrated time and again that UN, the world body that has passed numerous sanctions against mostly Muslim countries, has no jurisdiction over Israel. The peace meetings build expectations among the Palestinians and the time and again failures shatter the pent-up hopes leading to frustration and anger. Israel has been successful in grabbing land while diverting the attention of the World to staged peace conferences. This should lead one to conclude that peace will not happen unless all the lands in the West Bank and the Gaza have been cleared of the Arab inhabitants. This sentiment was aired by one of the Israeli Cabinet member when he wanted to know what to do with the a million Arabs who live in Israel.
The Palestinians have been paying with their lives and assets for the crimes of Hitler since the creation of Israel. If the Western world is serious to bring peace to the Palestine, they need to exercise what they preach. There exist UN resolutions that prohibited Israel from building any settlements in the conquered lands. Time and again Israel ignored these directives under the protective umbrella of the USA. Sanctions, on the other hand, are fiercely pursued against Muslim countries whose actions displease the West. It seems that the West does not have the will to do what is required. Israel could end up as an apartheid state or continue its policy of expelling the Palestinians. Such policies will isolate Israel as US influence gives way to emerging economies such as China, India and Russia
Mac Qurashi , Leesburg, FL, USA
The Israelis need to make peace soon or they will simply be swallowed by an Arab majority. Having said that the Israelis will never give up much of the West Bank particularly the area over the aquafers that supply 30 % of Israels water.
The proposed conflict with Iran will be a non starter because apart from a lightning strike without an occupation China who draws 30+% of her oil and India who will soon draw a lot of naturel gas from Iran will never let the US or Israel for that matter control that resource and by doing so control and limit the China and the India potential. Russia has large investments in the Iranian petro chemical industry and will also be against anything which harms her interests there
People in Palestine and Iran with state of the art weapons from China Russia and India now that is something which can only turn out badly for the Israel people soldiers choppers tanks and dozers.
Settle the war now Israel as there will never be a better time
Phillip Wintle, Gold Coast Queensland, Australia
No surprise here. Annexation and colonization of the West Bank continues apace, and Gaza is a vast prison.
Look, if Israel was even slightly interested in peace, they would reverse the course of the past sixty years. But judging by deeds, which are supposed to speak louder than words, it remains a terrorist state armed with a vast armory of nuclear weapons coupled with advanced delivery systems.
Let them find doom on their own if that is their decision, but do not drag the whole world into that sorry end.
