The mother of a teenage French boy who was raped in Dubai has won her campaign for justice for her son and for reform of the treatment of rape victims in the Emirates.
Véronique Robert today claimed victory after a court sentenced two Emiratis to 15 years in jail for kidnapping and sexually assaulting her son Alexandre, and the Dubai Government pledged to meet her demand to open rape victim centres.
Ms Robert has waged a vociferous and sustained campaign to expose what she calls the dark side of Dubai.
“This is a great victory for us we’ve changed the system. What’s done is done but what this means is that it will not happen to other people,” Ms Robert told The Times.
“I made them discover some dark parts of their system. Dubai is not the paradise it pretends to be.”
Habib Al Mullah, a government spokesman, confirmed that centres would be opened to help victims of rape after Ms Robert’s campaign demanding better treatment of children who suffer sexual assault.
Ms Robert accused the authorities of lacking sensitivity in their handling of her 15-year-old son, who was raped by three men in Dubai. After the attack, she said the police accused him of past homosexual behaviour and inventing the assault to cover it up.
The French-Swiss teenager was living with his father when he was abducted with a 16-year-old friend while they returned home from a mall in Dubai on July 14.
Three men drove the boys to the edge of the desert and threatened them with a stick and a knife before taking turns to sexually assault Alexandre.
While she was delighted to have won recognition that more needs to be done for rape victims, Ms Robert admitted that her son was hoping for a heavier sentence.
“Alexandre was really disappointed. FIfteen years is nothing in his mind, he wanted the death penalty.”
Ms Robert said that the elder of the defendants, who is HIV positive, should have been jailed for life. The Swiss national said the family was waiting for medical results to confirm that her son was not HIV positive or had contracted hepatitis C.

You can bet one thing. As the two rapists are U.A.E nationals they will be pardoned and set free buy the government after Ramadan or one of he other holy days. Luckily for them they are Emirati's if this went the other way around and the accused was a foreigner they would be stuck in prison until the completion of their sentence... Fair? dont think so

hey Al this was about respect for the law. It was about not making the victim the criminal. It was about enforcing the law in a fair and equal manner for all people in the UAE.
david, London,
Al in Dubai, I work in Abu Dhabi & have found your people to be warm & hospitable. But your comments are simply ignorent to the fact that this boy was raped by your countrymen. His mother waged her campaign to make YOUR country a better place to be, you my friend should be thanking her, not slating 80% of your population who come from overseas to help you build the UAE.

Why are these Europeans moving out of their countries. Maybe theys see them as crappy. Get out of UAE if you do not respect the laws!! Dont you say that to your own immigrants. Now the boot is on the other foot.

Bravo that this mother was in the unique position to not only extract justice for her son, but to evoke changes in a system that was clearly further victimizing crime victims.
You could not pay me to go over there.
I understand that they are trying to have a progressive philosophy, but it is undermined by centuries of ignorant tradition.
I hope the changes are real, lasting, and not just a surface aquiesence to political pressures.

Interesting comments from Al.

Al, Dubai, what are you saying, the laws in uae allow rape and we should bow to that??

One wonders how this all would have played out if they'd stayed in Dubai.
Not nearly so positively, I suspect.
It's clear that there was no justice in this system. This system sought to make the problem go away with the least amount of effort.
If the boy had phsycailly remained under their power, the easiest resolution would've been to toss him into jail. SInce that wasn't an option due to him being out of the country, the easiest resolution then became what they did here.
But, at least he was in an enlightened country and not subject to 200 lashings like rape victims in another, nearby country whom we won't name.

I think that this woman was very brave for what she believed in and how she stood up for her son. She is what every mother strives to be and I applaud her for that!

Much the same as some Priests seem to "go off the rails" because they are forced to be celibate, it seems that some Muslims similarly "go off the rails" because they too have to be "celibate" because of their religion. Either way its is wrong and the Emiratis need to acknowlegde it occurs and deal with it, not try and cover it up.
Edward, Singapore, UK
Another example of perverted Islamic law. (Coming to the UK soon given the birth demographics amongst immigrant Muslim populations.)
The mother is a truly courageous woman.

It's just incredible that a country that had suffered the most terrible things in its history, hadn't learned anything about life, about a fair life. About justice and God. It's really sad because all the things they do only show us that they hadn't suffered enough. Why do they still cause pain and harm to themselves? Are we mistaken? Are we wrong?
The Bible is really clear, we're heading towards our own end... and that's so sad. There is no justice, there is no more love or mercy. The only hope we have these days is that in the end of our times we will have Divine Justice.
