The guns may be made of plastic, but the scenes played out by these Palestinian children look real enough.
In war-torn Gaza and the West Bank, boys mimic the daily violence that takes place in their neighbourhoods. Using toy guns given to them during Eid al-Adha, a festival that commemorates the end of the haj, they re-create the conflict that has forged the lives of their fathers and their grandfathers.
Brandishing toy guns, they conduct mock raids of homes, where they pull one another out of the house blindfolded or handcuffed. They also play at “checkpoint”, forcing one another to line up and answer questions as though they were crossing one of the Israeli checkpoints.
Palestinian child protection groups say that children in the West Bank and Gaza are scarred emotionally by the violence. “My son sees other men in his family humiliated by Israeli soldiers. He mimics the behaviour with his friends. I do not think this is healthy,” said Suheir Bahour, 31, of Bethlehem.

Sir,
Has anyone heard about the imperious children of illegal Israeli settlers on the Occupied West bank. The videos on YouTube, of children abusing elderly Palestinians under the full view and encouragement of their parents and soldiers is a testament to the inhuman effect of occupation.

"Peace will come when Palestinians love their children more than they hate the Israeli's" - Golda Meir.
Very applicable 30 odd years ago, shamefully still very applicable today.

No Jean Z, Anne is quite correct. You are referring to a *Christian* school in the Bethlehem area. There never was any problems with the Christian Arab population.
Anne was referring to Muslim schools which are, of course, the vast majority. That is very well-documented. Have you read any good Palestinian school textbooks lately? Obviously not.
me, Jerusalem, Israel
No Anne, it is only 'well known and well documented that Palestinian children are brainwashed into hatred of Israel and Jews' on settler websites and the like. I have a copy here of the history book used at the Talitha Kumi school in Bethlehem which gives both the Israeli and the Palestinian narrative. The children are taught to see both sides.
What visitors to the West Bank find most amazing is that the Palestinians can still talk about peace and living together after all that has been done to them.
Jean Z, London, UK
Anne K, I'm married to a Palestinian, have two kids and family living in Gaza and oddly enough none of our or their kids have been brainwashed into hatred of Israelis and Jews - I'm proudly half-Jewish and am thoroughly fed up of rebutting this idiotic, Memri-spawned rubbish (and yes, I detest Hamas, as do family members there, who never voted for them yet are still being punished collectively).
Yes, there are hateful people, on both sides - though I've heard of two Israeli death from Palestinian rockets in the past year ( yes, still two too many) with slight damage caused to houses, as opposed to hundreds of Palestinian deaths and thousands of homes destroyed in the same period by Israeli tank shells, helicopter gunships, bombs, bulldozers, etc. I still don't believe either side are blameless victims or evil monsters - only by acknowledging our shared humanity and stressing that life on both sides is precious can we move forward rather than round in the same old circles.

Why were they given toy guns to celebrate Eid? Why not games, or soft toys or sweets?
Jon, London,
And our friends, who live in Sderot, have a 20 month old child who plays "bomb shelter" with her siblings. She calls out "Colour Red" (which is the air raid siren) and makes everyone run into the shelter.
War is nasty for everyone. But our friends do not indoctrinate their children into hatred of Palestinians, whereas it is well known and well documented that Palestinian children are brainwashed into hatred of Israel and Jews by their TV programs and even their schools.
Anne K, PT,
