At least fifteen people were wounded today when violent clashes broke out at Gaza’s Rafah border crossing as Palestinian protesters tried to force their way out of the besieged territory into Egypt.
Gunfire erupted on both sides as Egyptian security forces attempted to push back hundreds of protesters, many of them women, attending a demonstration called by the Islamist group Hamas. The crossing has been the scene of several protests called by Hamas in recent days after Israel imposed a punishing blockade on the territory in response to persistent rocket and mortar fire.
The lights came back on in parts of Gaza City today as Israel eased the lockdown, now in its fifth day, to allow some fuel into the impoverished territory. But Prime Minister Ehud Olmert of Israel warned that the shipment was a "one-off", with further deliveries contingent on a reduction in rocket and mortar attacks.
Though militants fired 17 rockets at Israel early today - five hitting Israeli territory without causing casualties - attacks have fallen markedly in recent days, enabling the Israeli government to claim the blockade has been effective.
Over the past week, Israeli strikes against militants in Gaza killed 38 people, most of them gunmen, while militants fired more than 200 rockets and mortar rounds into Israel, lightly wounding at least 10 people.
At least four Palestinians were shot and wounded in the exchange at the Rafah crossing, according to medics, while Egyptian security sources reported that 11 policemen had been injured – one by gunfire and the others by flying rocks. Several bloodied people were rushed from the scene on stretchers but the extent of their injuries was not immediately clear.
The protest started this morning as Palestinians, mostly women and young people, gathered at the crossing, demanding to be let into Egypt amid an Israeli blockade preventing fuel, food and humanitarian supplies from reaching the Gaza Strip. As the protesters tried to push across to the Egyptian side, security forces first subdued them with water cannons, detaining dozens.
Amid the tumult, a group of 40 women and 10 young people managed to break through to the Egyptian side of the crossing - Gaza’s only border crossing that bypasses Israel.
The group ran past Egyptian security forces who had retreated from the crowd after gunshots were heard, an Egyptian security source said. They were later caught and returned to Gaza.
“No-one in the world sees us, no-one is helping us,” Shamiya Arafat, a heavily veiled mother of six, said.
“The entire Arab world should be helping us, but they are standing with Israel because they are scared of America and of Israel."
Umm Mohammed, a 42-year-old mother of five, echoed such sentiments. “Why doesn’t Egypt open the crossing?” she wailed. “Because (President George W. Bush) gives them dollars."

Jan2208 While our sympathies goes out for the palestinian people. Their government has brought all this suffering on them. Think of all the billions of dollars ,pounds, and other currencies that has poured into Palestine and they are still begging for more. They inheried Gaza Strip that futile, and look what they have done to that. all because they want ot get rid of Israel. They have sent missiles into Sderot every day since receiving Gaza,Palestine was nothing but rubble until the Israelis came in,and the land produced abundandly. .Palestine will never rise above her government

NOW LET'S SEE :
The Gazan's are having a difficult time living (albeit without the threats of death) in happiness as the Jews in Europe did in 1945 and they decided to EN MASSE charge into EGYPT unwanted. Wonder what they would do if they WERE threatened with death in Gaza ???? Perhaps STAY in Egypt like they maybe have a RIGHT to, as the Jews did Israel??????
Su , WPB, US
The population is finding itself "HOSTAGE to conflict", huh? Well why should they PUNISH EGYPT by tearing down the walls and converging on EGYPT'S LAND? just as they say the Jews did to them in 1948?
Su , WPB, US
Murderers should not be put on the same footing as victims.
The UNO and the Security Concil members should know that there are never good excuses for murder : ignoring the murder is the equivalent of complicity. It is the duty of every State to defend its citizens â Its absolute duty and not only its right. Condemning Israel doesnât bring solutions. Only a clear, straight and objective approach of the painful Israelo-Arab probleme will have a chance to solve it as explained at : http://israelagainstterror.blogspot.com/2008/01/new-paradigm-for-israeli-palestinian_19.html
Jerome Bernier, Ashdod, Israel
So why does Egypt close its borders to its fellow Muslims, the Palestinians. When Israel does that it is condemned by all and sundry. Why the double standard?
Al, Weybridge, UQ
Surely they egyptians did not have to take such a heavy handed approach against women a rock throwing youths could they not have talked to them in civilised manner You expect Israel to.

After 1967 and before Oslo, the Arabs prospered. See: Karsh, What Occupation, In the 70s Judea, Samaria and Gaza was the 4th fastest growing economy in the world. GNP expanded 10 fold between '68 and '91 and $165 to $1.715 per capita. Life expectancy rose from 48 to 72. Infant mortality dropped from 60 per thousand to 15. Population with electricity rose from 28% tp 92%, with running water 16% to 85%, with gas ranges for cooking, 4% to 83%. TVs and refrigerators followed. The number of schoolchildren grew by 102%, and the number of colleges grew from 0 to 7.. If people are really suffering, blame the Oslo peace process which transferred authority to the Arabs.
