Israeli forces clashed with Hamas gunmen in southern Gaza tonight after tanks entered the Palestinian territory in pursuit of militants who have been pummelling southern Israel with rocket fire, witnesses said.
Hamas fighters unleashed small arms and mortar fire at forces backed by helicopters that entered the strip near the Kissufim crossing, east of the town of Khan Yunis, according to reports.
Palestinian security sources said Israeli troops were laying siege to a house of a member of Islamic Jihad in the village of al-Karara, several hundred metres from the border. There was no immediate comment from the Israeli army.
The incursion came as talks aimed at resolving the decades-old conflict remained in limbo, despite assurances given by Condoleezza Rice, that a peace deal could still be reached by the end of 2008.
During a visit to the region today, the US Secretary of State urged Ehud Olmert, the Israeli Prime Minister, and Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian President, to resume US-brokered negotiations.
Mr Abbas suspended negotiations on Sunday, after Israel launched Operation Warm Winter in the Gaza Strip, killing more than 120 Palestinians. Israeli troops withdrew yesterday, but Israeli warplanes continued to hit suspected Hamas rocket-launching targets in Gaza.
“I call on the Israeli government to halt its aggression so that we can afford the necessary atmosphere to conduct the negotiations,” Mr Abbas said, without setting any timetable for resuming talks.
“The choking siege around Gaza has also sabotaged the negotiations. Therefore I call on the Israeli government to cease its aggression in order to provide the environment necessary for the negotiations.”
Dr Rice will continue to meet with officials in Jerusalem tomorrow. Her visit had been planned to gauge progress on the peace process after President Bush’s recent visit to the region. But in light of the violence in Gaza, Dr Rice was expected to concentrate on simply getting the talks back on track.
A senior Israeli Foreign Ministry official said it was unlikely that the latest round of violence would end soon, adding that Israel hoped that Mr Abbas would “understand” Israel’s need to defend itself.
Tzipi Livni, the Israeli Foreign Minister, suggested earlier that Israel could have no choice but to launch a wide-scale military incursion into the Gaza Strip.
“We cannot afford this kind of extreme Islamic state controlled by Hamas,” said Ms Livni. Israel unilaterally disengaged from the Gaza Strip in the summer of 2005. Last June, Islamic Hamas militants violently seized control of the costal area, increasing the flow of rocket attacks on southern Israel.
“Obviously the situation in Gaza is one that is concerning... Hamas is doing what might be expected, which is using attacks, rocket attacks on Israel to try to arrest a peace process in which they have nothing to gain,” said Dr Rice.
She also called for Israel to allow humanitarian aid to reach Gaza. Israel complied and allowed more than 160 trucks packed with aid and medical supplies to enter southern Gaza today.
In late January, Hamas operatives breached the border fence with Egypt, allowing hundreds of thousands of Palestinians to stream into Gaza, purchasing supplies and selling goods.
In a report published today, a coalition of humanitarian organisations concluded that the humanitarian situation in Gaza is worse now than it has been at any time in the past 40 years.
Amnesty International, Care International UK, Cafod, Christian Aid, Médecins du Monde UK, Oxfam and Save The Children UK gave warning that more than 1.1 million people are now dependent on food aid and of 110,000 workers previously employed in the private sector, 75,000 workers have now lost their jobs.
“The recent escalation in violence, both from rocket attacks and military strikes, will make life even more unbearable in Gaza,” said Geoffrey Dennis, Chief Executive of Care.
Water and sewage infrastructure is on the point of total collapse. Unless the blockade ends now, it will be impossible to pull Gaza back from the brink of this disaster and any hopes for peace in the region will be dashed.”

To Saleh in Jordan. Cheer up there are some positive alternatives/initiatives. For any solution, it's likely the Palestinian refugees would like a referendum -for that you need voter registration. The sooner you start voter registration, the sooner the 2 million refugees over 18 can express their opinions to the world - and also elect representatives who can negotiate for them and go to Washington, and put their case.
850,000 Afghan refugees voted using Out of Country Voting (OCV), and was internationally recognised, and organised in 80 days. How about the Palestinian refugees? For more info, google: afghan ocv. Better to light a candle than curse the darkness.

Dear Leila, Manchester, UK, why not go directly to the subject? If you want to say that Jordan is home for the palestinans:
1.Sham, consisting of what is now Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, and occupied Palestine were regions of the nearly 800 years old Othmani Impire. These four regions with too many similarities were open and people moved between them freely. However, very rich in cultur, each of these regions had itâs own personality as to slang, clothing, food habits, products, songs etc.
2.Due to unrightious creation of Isreal in 1948 on occupied land by military force, most of Palestinians who were driven out of their homes and farms found shelter in Jordan and became Jordanian citizens in terms of legal status only. In fact they are still refugees as recognized by UN. Most of them still live in misirable conditions in refugees camps (about l8 in Jordan alone) they still inform their children our real home is their to the west. Millions of US citizens still keep original nationalities

Yaseen from London:
You say that nobody is looking at the situation 'in depth'. That Palestinians have an inability to move in their own country, that Israel are continuing to build settlements & that there's a giant wall that sits deep within their land. You say that we 'need to wake up & smell the coffee'.
You need to either visit the region, or read some books & simply educate yourself a little more to avoid becoming a laughing stock by writing such idiotic and incorrect waffle.
The attacks are coming from Gaza- didn't Israel DISMANTLE 21 Jewish towns in Gaza in 2005? You say they're building more when there are none there at all!
What about the giant wall? Is that in Gaza? If you're referring to the West Bank barrier, which is there because in the 3 years before it was built 117 Palestinian terrorists blew themselves up murdered 477 Israelis - Jews, Muslims & Christians, then that's another debate entirely.
Please, get your facts/geography vaguely right, Yaseen.
Blake-Ezra Cole, London,
To Saleh, Amman. Who were the Jordanians before they were Jordanians?
leila, manchester, uk
To Leila, Manchester, UK: when and how Jordan became a country? You have to refer to the famous sayks-peko agreement right after WW1 where Great Britain was a party. You will become more aware about the British historical responsibilities towards our region. However, in the case of Jordan no people were removed; and no people were mobilized.
By the way; we also miss the Middle East peace envoy! Having worked so hard for peace! is he enjoying a holiday somewhere?
saleh, amman, jordan
And when did Jordan become a country?
leila, manchester, uk
To Leon in London, I say: Judaism is not a nationality, itâs a religion. Jews like Moslems and Christians can live anywhere as they are born. Why do you want us to agree that all Jews must live in a Jewish state of their own? However, if so, they should not live on the land of others. Among the five million âIsraelisâ who live now in âIsraelâ, of course there are some who deserve to live on this land because they originated on this land, but to mobilize millions of Jews from every other part of the world and remove Palestinians who lived on the same land for at least two thousand years is not acceptable. If you apply this rule, hundreds of millions shall leave the united states, canada, austalia and newzeland back to Europe!

Israel is smaller than Wales
Israel only accounts for 0.8 of 1%!!! of the land mass in the M/E.
"land grab" and " expansion" is a joke, this country is so tiny.
They just want to survive.
They have been attacked in full scale wars, won and are told to give the land bank.
They face constant attempted suicide attacks, that you never hear about.
Hezzbolah, Hamas, Syria, Iran etc want this tiny country wiped out. They have publicly stated it.
They need our support, not continual condemnation for trying to survive.
The arabs have 22 countries, not to mention the tens of other Muslim countries. Jews have one country on this planet.
there are 12 million Jews worldwide, 5m in Israel vs 300million arabs and 1.5billion Muslims.
Lets support this tiny minority for a change
Leon, london,
it's an equal fight and it is not good for Isreal to show her power to innocent children (19 babies killed in their cot) and I don't think these babies have rockets to fire to Israel. Moreover, Israel was humilated in South Lebanon 2 yrs ago and they think they will succeed on the Palestinians??? NOOOOOOOOOOO
I think the only way for solving this problem is going through the nogotiation table and follow the peace process for both sides to live in peace. I think the Palestinians have had enough of bloodshed.

"In the view of Fadal Tahabub, a member of the Palestinian National Council, an estimated 70 percent of the 200,000 Arab residents of Jerusalem prefer to remain under Israeli sovereignty."
"Nor are such pro-Israeli sentiments limited to residents of Jerusalem. When Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's government released a trial balloon in February 2004 about giving the Palestinian Authority control over the Galilee Triangle, a predominantly Arab part of Israel, the response came strong and hard. As Mahmoud Mahajnah, 25, told Agence France-Presse, "Yasir Arafat runs a dictatorship, not a democracy. No one here would accept to live under that regime. I've done my [Israeli] national service; I am a student here and a member of the Israeli Football Association. Why would they transfer me? Is that logical or legitimate?" One resident quoted what he called a local saying, that "the âevil' of Israel is better than the âheaven' of the West Bank." Shuâa Saâd, 22, explained why: "Here you can say whatever you like and do whatever you wantâso long as you don't touch the security of Israel. Over there, if you talk about Arafat, they can arrest you and beat you up." Another young man, âIsam Abu âAlu, 29, put it differently: "Mr. Sharon seems to want us to join an unknown state that doesn't have a parliament, or a democracy, or even decent universities. We have close family ties in the West Bank, but we prefer to demand our full rights inside Israel."

You guys are not looking at the situation in depth, how can you sit there and whine about rockets - do you not ask the question of why they are launching these rockets?? Israel are squeezing the Palestinians to the brink of extinction with their checkpoints, inability to move within their own country, no food, no jobs, trade is non existant and Israel continue to build settlements, and a giant wall that sits deep into their land. Come on this is not a one way thing and you need to wake up and smell the coffee, it disturbs me that you are stupid to think Israel are so peaceful and patient - please~!!!
Yaseen , London, UK
Israel should fence of gaza and must never occupy such a place and let egypt run it as pre67 attacks will stop on Israel because the fear of the Egyptians is far greater than F16s and drones. The palis have no need to go across Israel and Israel should stop feeding this beggar mentality. if you want food then start working instead of poncing of the rest of the world

HAMAS IS DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED . SO MUCH FOR
DEMOCRACY.
I guess we are looking for another Saddam Hussain. We will arm him to the teeth let him bomb the stuffing out of Iran with the weapons we will supply him. 10 years later we will hang him on the pretext of killing his own people.
You are only saying this as its not on your doorstep.
When the I.R.A. was bombing us did we bomb Ireland into the stone age?
Did we cut off their water?
Stop Aid?
Shot ambulances?
Killed their children?
Shot their young?
NO WE DID NOT.
Andrew, Kent, England
It's astounding... Israeli towns and soldiers were in Gaza pre-2005 and no rockets are fired into mainland Israel. Israel leaves Gaza to the Palestinian's own devices and they're then faced with rockets every single day designed to kill and maim totally innocent civilians.
If Hamas and the Palestinian people do not want Gaza to be a part of Israel once more, then STOP FIRING ROCKETS AT ISRAELI TOWNS with the intention of murder. It's so simple.
STOP trying to cover up your pig-headed and selfish behaviour Hamas, by deflecting pressure upon Israel.
STOP hiding behind your own civilians and using children as shields in a cheap attempt to save your own destructive life and demonise Israel.
STOP taking kindness for weakness, reclaiming Gaza and not developing it as a crucial part of Palestine but using it as a launch-pad to throw missiles into Israel.
Hamas is the enemy of peace, of decency, of life, of stability and of free societies which one day may live side-by-side.

Has anyone seen our Peace Envoy?

This is a no win situation. Muslims can't live with each other in peace. Who expects them to co-exist with Israel.
James higgins, Derby, England
I think it would be best for all parties involved, if Israel got rid of Hamas once and for all. If this means re-occupying Gaza, then so be it.
