At least nine people were killed last night and nine others injured when a Palestinian gunman opened fire on students at a rabbinical seminary in Jerusalem, the first terrorist attack in the city for more than three years. The gunman was among the dead.
The attacker, wearing a grey jumper and jeans, was later identified by police as Jabel Mukaber, a resident of Arab East Jerusalem. He had walked through the Mercaz Harav seminary’s main gate and entered the library, carrying an assault rifle and a pistol in a small cardboard box.
David Simchon, head of the seminary, said that the students had been preparing a celebration for the new month in the Jewish calendar, which includes the holiday of Purim. “We were planning to have a Purim party here tonight and instead we had a massacre,” he said.
Witnesses described terrifying scenes during the shooting, with students jumping out the windows of the building to escape. It was at this point that one of the students, Yitzhak Dadon, took aim. “I lay on the roof of the study hall, cocked my gun and waited for him. He came out of the library spraying automatic fire,” said Mr Dadon, an army reservist.
“He came to the entrance and I shot him twice in the head,” he said. A soldier then killed the gunman with a rifle, Mr Dadon added.
The shooting at the seminary was the most serious attack in Jerusalem since September 2004, when two police officers were killed and at least 16 people injured after a bag packed with explosives was detonated at a bus stop. Between 2001 and 2004, at the height of the second Palestinian intifada, Israel’s biggest city was a frequent target of Palestinian attacks, including suicide bombings on buses.
The seminary, which was founded 80 years ago by Israel’s first Chief Rabbi, Avraham Yitzchak HaCohen Kook, is associated with the Jewish settler movement in the West Bank. Most of the students are 12–25 years of age.
Hezbollah’s Al-Manar television station claimed that the attack had been carried out by the previously unknown Phalange of Free Men of Galilee – Groups of the Martyr Imad Mughnieh and Martyrs of Gaza.
Imad Mughnieh was a top Hezbollah commander assassinated in a bombing on February 12, for which the Islamist organisation blamed Israel and threatened to exact revenge.
Israeli police have been on heightened alert throughout the country this week amid fears that Arab fury at the ongoing violence in the Gaza Strip could spill over and spark a third intifada. Israel’s Operation Warm Winter in Gaza left more than 120 Palestinians and two Israeli soldiers dead. Israeli troops withdrew on Monday, though the air force continued strikes against suspected rocket launchers.
“We have been waiting for the violence to start again and we knew it was only a matter of time until this false peace ended,” said a woman who lives opposite Mercaz Harav. Store owners in Jerusalem were planning to close up early for the weekend, while police prepared to put an additional 5,000 officers on the streets and increased their presence in the Arab neighbourhoods of East Jerusalem.
The attack came a day after the Condoleezza Rice, the US Secretary of State, persuaded Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian President, to return to peace talks with Israel. Mr Abbas condemned last night’s shooting.

Disappointed to see a large number of Palestinians celebrating the killings last night. There's faults at both sides, but this certainly won't help their cause.
Martyn, Edinburgh,
Eighty thousand Jews, like myself, born and raised in Egypt were expelled from our country. Did we kill any Egyptians for that? Did we throw any roquets on Egypt? Did we captured or randsom any Egyptian politicians, army or people? Did we make any terrorist attacks on Egypt?
More than a million Jews were expelled from North Africa and they did nothing to retaliate.
We just went to other countries and restarted our life becoming their citizens abiding by their laws.
What about you Palestinians? Did any brothers Arab countries opened their gates for you?
It is time for you to come to reality and start to behave as human beings. Many Palestinians have done it and live a decent life. Hatered will take you no place in this world.
E. Israel born in Egypt

The kids sitting in the seminary were learning that God wants the Jews to ethnic cleanse all Palestinians, Christians and Muslims, from Greater Israel.
The Israelis chanting "Death to Arabs" outside the seminary were mostly reservists in the Israeli military. How many will go on to commit atrocities against innocent Palestinian civilians?
Len, Ottawa,
120 Palestinians dead in operation dead winter! Thats more than the number of Israelis dead in 7 years.
A helpless people who can do nothing to protect themselves against the "manhunting" Israeli army except fire harmless rockets which are next to harmless. All this while world leaders say israel has the right "to defend" itself.
Amr Abdeen, Cairo, Egypt
To those who say that the Palestinians should leave and join other Arab nations - RIDICULOUS. Do you think the Palestinians who have been subjected to oppression within their own lands for decades will just pick up their bags and leave - I dont think so. Their resolve is quite impressive seeing what they have been through. It is so easy to say TERRORIST, it has become a word flung about to justify mass killing. The struggle is on both sides - the oppressor is Israel. Thier perception of Arabs and everyone else is that they are lower class humans, and the Palestinians have been treated as Dogs. Thier pain and suffering will not be tucked under the carpet and will only make them stronger. As for the power hungry Hamas they are the authority because of the Palestinian situation, if my 6 month child was killed by an aggressor i think i too would elect a power that will defend my land and my people. Do Israel think that mass killing will stop the Oppressed from fighting back? - - NO!!!!!!!!
YB, London, UK
Yeah yeah blah blah let's blame the Jews or the Israelis. It has to be their fault.
Here were a class of some 30 kids sitting learning Bible. They were learning peacefully in a part of the City of Jerusalem where Jews have always lived (not on "occupied land") and not bothering anyone. In walks this bloke with a Kalashnikov and dozens of spare clips and starts spraying them with bullets. What do you call this - an accident or premeditated murder.
Now let's look at last week. over 2,500 bombs sent into Israel (that's within the pre 67 Green Line) in just over 2 months. People killed, their lives made hell by their supposedly peace-loving neighbours. So after being restrained for months the Israelis go after the terrorists - who site their launchpads in blocks of flats. The Israelis warn the civilians. And some civilians get killed.
The Palestinians now admit 70% of killed are terrorists. I suspect it's more like 90%.
There is no moral equivalency.
The leftists are next for Hamas.
Rabbi, Liverpool, UK
Over ten thousand people have been killed in the name of "The Religion of peace" in the last decade.
Muslims killed 68 "non-believers" (other Muslims) in Baghdad just yesterday.
Pretty much the only thing the "palestinians" teach their kids is to hate and kill.
Is our all-pervasive political correctness going to prevent us from ever recognising Islam's true face?
Alan, Edinburgh,
How is it that "fighting for a cause" can ever include entering a school and randomly slaughtering students? What was to be gained? The gunman obviously thought there was something to be gained, but how can any decent human being come to terms with such objectives? questions questions questions...
Mot Nolnoc, stockholm, Sweden
I was in Jerusalem last year Nov-Dec and my impressions are that this is a never-ending war between the Jews and the Muslims. If somebody took my home from me, I too would feel aggrieved and fight to get it back. The Bible is not a bona-fide document to settle the ownership of the Palestine land. This everlasting war is a direct result of the one sided interpretation of the Bible. As long as the Palestinian people are denied their equal rights with the Jews, and reparation for the stolen land, there will be this war for all future generations.

"Sure, that childs should not have been killed!!! But Israel Defense Force killed 70 muslims in one week, and muslims killed 70 jewish in 7 years!!!!"
Are you mad?
WHat about all the suicide bombings since 2000??
All the attacks and sniper shootings?!?
70 in 7 years?
You are absolutely mad. Hundreds have been murdered.
G, London, UK
I think, just for once, people in this country need to turn off the 'hyposcrisy switch.' We collectively blame 'the Israeli's' for everything (as though the entire population agreed with what's going on) and think its a case of just deserts when Israelis get bombed or killed. One collective punishment deserving another I am sure they would say. Well, here's a question for you: if Israel deserves suicide bombings for killing several thousand Palestinians over the yes, then just how many suicide bombings does this country deserve for contributing in the deaths of over 150,000 Iraqis? Whether you agreed with the war or not is irrelevent. Collective punishment is all that counts. Well, how many? And don't harp on about 7/7; by Israel and middle east standards, that's just small fry.
Romulus, London, UK
When will people open their eyes and realise there is a world of difference between Israel's actions in Gaza and last night's murder of the Yeshiva students. Israel never sets out to hit at unarmed civilians; it is the policy of Hamas and Hezbollah operating behind the human shield of their own peolple which leads to civilian deaths.
On the other hand the Arab terrorists, of whatever banner they operate under, who have been targeting the people of Sderot in southern Israel with no possible justification.
Last night's massacre of these young men took events to new depths of depravity. Yet as I write this the Palestinians in Gaza are celebrating! His family in East Jerusalem have erected Hamas flags from their home. We know who is to blame; Israel knows who is to blame.....
Andrew Shaw, Belfast, N.Ireland
Has nobody noticed the quotation in the report? Here it is again: âHe came to the entrance and I shot him twice in the head,â he said. A soldier then killed the gunman with a rifle, Mr Dadon added.
So a soldier killed a man who had been shot twice in the head. Will someone be prosecuted for this? Is revenge killing murder or just manslaughter?
Eddie Philpott-Kent, Norwich, England
Of course what has happened is terrible and must be condemned - but you cannot ignore "cause" and "effect" - Israeli actions over the years breed the ideology of revenge and hatred - Israeli terror bombing in Lebanon and more recent actions in Gaza were war crimes and the blockade of Gaza is in effect a low grade Holocaust on 1.5 million Palestinians in their own homeland.
Who is aslo an "innocent civilian" is a matter of debate - the man that shot the terrorist according to the report above no other than an armed Israeli reservist soldier who was also a student at the school! - if you are an armed Israeli soldier who choses to live on stolen land and you also have a "licence to kill" indigenous Palestinians in their own homeland with impunity - you are NOT an innocent civilian inmho.
Michael J, Leicester, UK
The time has come to complete the unfinished business of creating a state of Israel. Time to remove the relatively small population from the Gaza strip and for it to be incorporated formally into the borders of Israel.
The neighbouring Arab states have plenty of room to accommodate the people of Gaza. The time has come for them to do it.
John, Guildford,
As an observation - yeserday 8 Israeli's are killed and it's headline news in all the media. Yesterday 69 people were blown to bits in Iraq and it was just by chance I happened to read about it on the CNN website...........
As usual, any 'atrocity' against Israel or its partner in crime USA, is met with outrage and indignation - the double standards are somewhat sickening.
Joy, Crowthorne, Berks
To want to murder religious students indicates no respect for any religion, Islam, Christianity or Judaism. The Nazis did the same thing when I was young, aided and abetted by some very evil people in countries that they occupied..
The Muslims have huge amounts of territory and many Arab countries could offer to take the Palestinians, as happemed during and after the 2nd World War with the remnant of the Jews who managed to escape from Nazi Europe. to UK, USA and elsewhere. It is so easy just to blame Israel which was attacked immediately after the UN had formed the states of Jordan and Israel from the previously mandaterd territories (by all the Arab countries).
N. Vidson, grantham, new hampshire
The entire West Bank has been occupied by israeli encroachments. The entire Gaza Strip is besieged and imprisoned.
Although the killings of innocents by both sides is condemnable, the feelings of the occupied people are understandable.
What the israeli tanks and bulldozers are doing in Gaza is no different from frustrated suicidal killings by the occupied people.
Israeli encroachments are being expanded continuously in occupied territories and no one says a word about this.
The only solution to this senseless killings is that both israelis and arabs should learn to live side by side in peace.
SM Hussain, Hyderabad, India
I am watching this on TV and all I can think of is that last week Israel killed over 100 people in Palestine, most of whom were not combatants, and we hardly heard about it. 8 people get shot, and it's the non-stop headline news all day long.
This reeks of a false-flag attack to justify a new aggression by Israel.
Stanzler, NY, U.S.A
Folks, the false-flag just does not get any more obvious than this. Israel was losing in the court of world opinion. They were looking for an excuse to get back into Gaza and right when they needed it, one shows up.
Stanzler, NY, U.S.A
Israel has its excuse to go back into Palestine. How wonderful for them that someone carries out an attack like this EXACTLY when Israel most needed it to deflect world opinion away from what Israel was doing in Palestine.
Stanzler, NY, U.S.A
Lets not point the finger at a group of people before we know who has done it, otehrwise things will escalate and deteriorate further. Attacking innocent civilians is not allowed in Islam, Judaism or Christainity, so however did it, did not do it inthe name of religion. It is probable that it was more due to desparation and the persecution being suffrered by the Israeli state.
Abdullah, London , UK
"Nine dead"
Since "only" 8 students were killed I must assume that the 9th one is the terrorist himself.
Seems kinda weird to me to includ ehim in the numbers. Is he really a victim?

I feel sorry for these poor Israeli folks who just died. They should blame their government and no one else.
jayil, london, uk
I do not see what is wrong with Jayils statement. Surely if Hamas is to blame for palestinian civilians killed by Israel then the Israel should be blamed for the civilians that got killed by a palestinian. When Israel pounded lebanon the last time blame the terrorist.
Enough of this double speak, when a muslim is killed terrorist is killed, when an israeli is killed its a poor innocent soul minding his business. Absolute hypocrisy. The good thing is that people are not stupid. Israel has stolen land (according to an international court) and should give it back rather than trying to expand it to a greater Israel.
Muhammad, Cambridgeshire,
Jabel Mukaber is the name of the neighbourhood in East Jerusalem, not the name of the terrorist.
Abigail, Jerusalem, Israel
2Sure, that childs should not have been killed!!! But Israel Defense Force killed 70 muslims in one week, and muslims killed 70 jewish in 7 years!!!!"
Agreed.
Israel committed hideous acts last week which resulted in Palestinian children dying, was it deemed terrorism? No.
But now a UNKNOWN group of Palestinians are trying to get revenge it is condemed by all sides of the Earth.
My thoughts and prayers goes with any innocent that has died on both sides.
Laila, London, UK
I wonder who is at fault here. It is a war situation and âEverything is fair in Warâ or so they say. But what worries me the most is that men can fall as low as to kill children and students to resolve matters. If anyone is to be blamed itâs ourselves as Human Beings.
Zoheb, Bangalore, India
Seriously now, why is that some people are unable to see that a military going after terrorists (ie, people who target civilians to sow horror) is not equal to the likes of this monster who in a pre-meditated fashion mows down children in a religious school. Collateral damage inflicted by a military is tragic, but the moral blindness of equating the two is beyond the pale. This is not a matter of perspective - this is a matter of barbarity.
Sim, USA,
Jayil
I don't think you do feel sorry at all. Maybe it is the fault of Hamas who fire rockets at ...ermm, Israeli children. Presumably that is okay?
Israel is at war with the proxy armies of Iran and Syria, the will accept nothing less than the annihilation of Israel (read the Hamas charter). Nothing but capitulation by Israel will stop these attacks and it a crying shame.
John, London,
Sure, that childs should not have been killed!!! But Israel Defense Force killed 70 muslims in one week, and muslims killed 70 jewish in 7 years!!!!
Civils are not to blame, but Holmert should leave power quickly, or it will be worth!!!!!
Benjamin, Paris, france
IT is so hard for me to beleive some one is so STUPID as to blame the Israeli goverment and not the TERROIST who are daily bombarding Israel with rockets. Israel ,as far as I have read , never targets civilians, but sometimes they get killed or wounded. i wish that did not happen , but that is a war zone.
neal, kingsville mo,
To Jayil: There is no moral equivalence here. Israel has killed no children except by accident, and few at that. How about if a Brazilian came to a school in your area and killed people? Would I be able to say that you should blame your government for killing a innocent man in the tube?
Jean-Francois, Montreal, Canada
Jayil,
please compare the situations that the palistinian children got killed and the israeli students.
the palistinians were being used as human shields while the people that were supposed to protect them were shoting missiles into israel. There are videos that show missles being launched from schools.
the isreali students were sitting in a library and studying when this murderer walked in and killed them .
You have to be blind not to see the difference.
steve, Omaha , Nebraska
What did Israel expect after killing Palistanian children?
I feel sorry for these poor Israeli folks who just died. They should blame their government and no one else.
jayil, london, uk
