A senior officer in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard has emerged as the father of a nuclear programme that western intelligence services believe is aimed at producing a warhead capable of devastating any city in the Middle East.
Ostensibly a lecturer in physics at Tehran’s Imam Hussein University, Mohsen Fakhrizadeh-Mahabadi is seen as the Iranian equivalent of A Q Khan, the scientist who led Pakistan’s nuclear weapons race with India.
The National Council of Resistance of Iran, a coalition of groups opposed to the regime in Tehran, was the first to identify Fakhrizadeh, 47, as one of the leading figures in Iran’s nuclear programme. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has also named him as the man it would most like to interview about the programme, adding that despite repeated requests the Iranian government has refused access.
Intelligence shown to IAEA representatives last month included documents from an Iranian laptop computer. It named Fakhrizadeh as the man in charge. A personnel list had Fakhrizadeh at the top of the organisation running the programme, while other documents showed him setting budgets for research and laying down rules on how much of their work the project’s scientists could discuss with colleagues.
It backs up suggestions that Fakhrizadeh is the head of “Project 111”, an Iranian attempt to produce a nuclear warhead capable of exploding at 2,000ft and causing devastation over a wide area.
The material on the laptop obtained by US intelligence suggested a warhead would be designed to fit Iran’s Shahab-3 missile. Israel is seen as the most likely target.
European officials were surprised when the US National Intelligence Estimate said last December that Iran had stopped working on a design for nuclear weapons in 2003. Although there is some evidence of a pause after the invasion of Iraq, other analysts believe the programme has resumed.
Simon Smith, Britain’s permanent envoy to the IAEA, said, “Certainly some of the dates that the secretariat was presenting in there went beyond 2003.”

The UK should take the first step to peace by disbanding its own nuclear defenses before it criticizes other countries hostile or otherwise for wanting equal defenses.
Ryan Brinkley, Salisbury, England
Hello Iranians it is a nice to read your post. You should post more often. Most Americans fear your country because your leaders talk about the Shiite Cresent. We are lead to believe that you want to end the world to reveal the hidden Iman.
Is this not true? If so, that 's why you can't have Nukes

The Empire of USA and its "allies" bullying will continue to encourage many nations, including Iran, to seek means to defend and deter. An attack on Iran by USA/Israel axis would most likely ensure the serious pursuit and ultimate development of strategic weapons including nuclear by Iran and perhaps others.
This article "reporting" on the (stolen) laptop story, and many like it, seems to be devised to drum up domestic support (in UK and the west) for attacking Iran. In reality, Iran is of no real threat (heck nothing we make works right anyway), and Iranian mind-set is not perfect but does not favor invading anybody - we prefer poetry, long good byes at parties, talking about how grand iran was/is, mom's cooking, conversing with the almighty,.... but we do like our independence and keeping what is ours - like oil and such which would be the real reason for invading us - and if pushed we will fight. Even if we get beat up (and many times in history we have been), we will be back.

Kourosh, Shiraz,
I am an Iranian businessman who lives in the city of Semnan. I have the opportunity to be out of country now, so I can express my true feeling about Iranian regim's nuclear activities. Pursunig nuclear weapone by the Iranian regime is not secret to us Iranian, the National Council of Resistance have been revealing that for years. But what bothers is the fact it takes a long time for IAEA to follow what NCRI has exposed, because the Iranian regime's nuclear activities is dagerous for both Iranian and Western countries.
Habib Semnani, Semnan, Iran
God forbid anyone criticize the current Iranian Government! Well if they were friendly and forthcoming and treated people well and weren't so ethnocentric and hostile the west would be a friend and economic times would be mutually good. Don't forget you were the only country in modern times that kidnapped an embassy staff in a most childish manner and behaved ridiculously for two generations now. So naturally the west doesn't trust your nuclear intentions, especially in light of your training and financing complete terror armys attacking israel and US forces in Iraq. The west considers its people valuable and will protect them from others who would harm them. Iran could choose to become a member of the civilized club again, but they thrive on provoking conflict for their own purposes. Why doesn't Ahmaddinajad improve the economy in Iran like he promised instead of poking his finger in everyones eye as he builds nuclear bombs? That is an insane policy in view of Iran's real needs
Brian Stewart, Los Angeles,
I wonder if Al-Qaeda made an assertion about a Western country how many of you would consider it as legit? Well to believe the National Council of Resistance of Iran is like believing Al-Qaeda and their claims, how trust worthy is that?
You folks in the west don't want to get it, the National Council of Resistance of Iran is to Iranians what Al Qaeda is to you! Their claims mean nothing to us! They are trying to do a Shalabi like move in the west because they are so power hungry they don't care that no one supports them in Iran, they just want power at any cost!
Samy, Tehran,
Once again, the IAEA belatedly confirms information provided by the National Council of Resistance on Iran's nuclear drive. I think the group's assertion that the regime is trying full-force to develop a nuclear bomb has merit. Weak sanctions will not force the regime to back down in its uranium enrichment activities. But a comprehensive oil embargo, which would cripple the regime's economic lifeline, would ensure that it could no longer have the resources to pursue its clandestine nuclear projects in defiance of the UN security council and the IAEA. The Iranian people would also look favourably to the regime being isolated on the international scene.
Hamid Irani, London,
"The National Council of Resistance of Iran, a coalition of groups opposed to the regime in Tehran"
Well, that group are obviously going make such claims arn't they? especially with U.S backing. Anything to remove the regime. Similar to claims made by Ahmed Chalabi about Saddam's regime and their weapons.
jayil, london, uk
What a article!! donot know where to start: "National Council of Resistance of Iran, a coalition of groups opposed to the regime" DO you mean the terrorist group that took weapon alongside of sadam to kill iranians.
all people no matter from whcih political group hate
these traitors. so now England want to pop them up? How
pathetic and desperate!?
Personally I donot like Ahmadinejad but I respect him for
following scientific progress in nuclear and space programs.
He did not started them but he follow's them the way people want. Kudos on Him.
Ali, TO,
Why does the nuclear club have to be limited to a few nations? If you can afford nuclear weapons (resources, technology, espionage etc etc to get them) well have them!
Its like why does the West the biggest violators of "human rights", the greatest killers of the Earth get to preach to others about "respecting" a very concept they don't follow themselves?
It like why does the West (in a rush to "develop") get to destroy the planet yet expect the people that didn't (and many of whom you oppressed and committed said "human rights" violations against) have to suffer for it? For every Indian or Chinese who wants a car (e.g. the Nano thing) then someone in the West should forgo this privilege. Its only fair.
If you don't like it, then fine. Just stop preaching to others.
