FIVE British hostages who were kidnapped in Iraq last year may be being held in Tehran, the Iranian capital, according to intelligence reports received by the Foreign Office.
The disclosure, supported by two security sources in London and officials in Iraq, means that any rescue attempt by British special forces would be almost impossible.
The latest intelligence follows statements last year by General David Petraeus, commander of US forces in Iraq, that he believed the five men had been abducted by a group funded, trained and armed by Iran.
Petraeus stopped short of commenting on their whereabouts.
Four of the hostages were security men. They were guarding Peter Moore, a computer specialist.
The group was abducted in an apparently well planned operation on May 29 last year. About 40 heavily armed men dressed in police uniform stormed the finance ministry in Baghdad where Moore was training staff.
They were last seen being driven off in a convoy of 19 four-wheel drive vehicles towards Sadr City, Baghdad’s sprawling Shi’ite district.
Their kidnapping was said to be in retaliation for the killing by British troops of the Shi’ite commander in Basra, southern Iraq.
Petraeus identified the kidnappers as a secret cell of the Mahdi Army, the Shi’ite militia loyal to Moqtada al-Sadr, the radical cleric. The militia has denied involvement.
On a video broadcast last December, the kidnappers identified themselves as the Shi’ite Islamic Resistance in Iraq. In that video one of the kidnapped men, who said his name was Jason, said: “I feel we have been forgotten.”
In a second video released in February, Moore appealed to Gordon Brown to secure his release by freeing nine Iraqis.
“I have been held here for nearly eight months now. Release their people so that we can go home. It’s as simple as that,” he said.
The hostages’ future is said to hinge on the release of Qais al-Khazaali, a former chief spokesman for the Mahdi Army, and eight other Mahdi officials.
Khazaali, who led a Mahdi faction trained in Iran, was detained by American forces after masterminding a raid inside a base in which five US soldiers were killed.
A senior official in Basra confirmed that the hostages were all in Iran. “You have to understand that the groups that kidnapped these men are affiliated to Iran,” he said.
“Iran acts as the embracing mother for them in their acts and deeds and will also benefit from the situation. It is their haven.”
He said that a British photographer working for CBS, who was kidnapped from his hotel in Basra last month, has also been taken to Iran but officials in London were unable to confirm this.
The Foreign Office said that it had a policy of not commenting on the whereabouts of any British hostages.

People wake up to this propaganda , or we will be at the merci of the media's higher powers... There is nothing going on in Iran and the truth will be told in the end. even if its not for 10 years , dont believe these lies , and if your not sure then question them ! no proof just claims , its awful to think America and UK are capable of this type of propoganda , but open you eyes, analyse , be smart and hopefully this war on the middle east can stop before its to late !

"After all, Israel destroyed Lebanon over the "kidnapping" of 3 or so soldiers."
The Israel-bashers never miss an opportunity. What does this article have to do with Israel?
You mean the unprovoked crossing of the international and undisputed border from Lebanon to Israel by a military force and the killing and abduction of several soldiers while firing rockets at civilian targets as a diversion. This followed 6 years of unprovoked lesser attacks on Israel by Lebanon - after Israel's total withdrawal to the international border as demarcated by the UN and certified by the UN that Israel had withdrawn from all Lebanese territory.
The Lebanese have only themselves to blame for the "destruction". They have been attacking Israel for over 30 years for no other reason than its existence - first by Palestinian terrorists and then by Hizbollah terrorists. And the Lebanese government did absolutely nothing to stop these attacks from its sovereign territory over the decades.

Lies, lies and more lies designed to draw Britain into another illegal war for oil...
We never see any of this "proof", everything the US has said so far about Iran has been proven to be a lie, indeed the reason why Iraq is calming down right now is due directly to peace brokering by Iranian Generals that are listed by the US as terrorists...
Bush and Cheney are rabidly trying to push the case for war with Iran, no sane man wants this to happen and what Bush and Cheney fail to understand that if Iran and Venezuela turn off the oil to the west, the US economy will almost fail overnight.
And what of the thoughts of the people? The vast majority that DO NOT agree with further bloodshed? Or the prospect of crimes against peace and humanity here? After all Iran is likely doing the very thing the US does and that is support a faction, Iran hasn't invaded a country and wrecked it, America HAS and a possible million dead in Iraq should be a warning.
Ian Watson, Gillingham, Dorset
I suppose since Iran now holds the hostages, we can nuke Iran. After all, Israel destroyed Lebanon over the "kidnapping" of 3 or so soldiers.
The US, Britain and Israel are so desperate to find a reason -- any reason -- to bomb Iran that it is getting ridiculous. The neo-cons are running out of time and they aren't sure they can rig the next US elections and put their guy (McKain) or gal (Clinton) into office -- not with popular opinion virtually united against the Iraq war. If they don't throw a match on the powder keg that is the M.E., then the next US President could pull troops out, especially if we can't afford the cost of the war with the dollar collapsing. They have to create a big enough mess that the US will have to stay. They also need a world war. A traumatized populace will agree to virtually anything if you promise them peace in return.
One should hope the hostages are in Iran. It is certainly much safer there than Iraq.
Scarlett, Richmond, US
Just look in the country that wants war (fought by others) the most and there they'll be. I'd be looking for the British captives in Tel Aviv before I looked in Tehran.
Paulbe, Cairns,
Is this the same kind of intelligence that said Iraq had weapons of mass destruction and isn't General Petraeus just a mouth peace for war with Iran?
