DUBAI Al-Qaeda's second in command, Ayman al-Zawahri, said in an audio message to mark five years since the US-led invasion of Iraq that Washington's war had met with nothing but failure and defeat.
He mocked President Bush's decision to suspend troop withdrawals from Iraq this summer, saying that he was scared of admitting defeat and was trying to pass the problem on to his successor.
“What the American invasion of Iraq has reached today, after five years, is ... failure and defeat,” he said in the tape posted on a website used by Islamist groups. “The American troops, if they leave, will lose everything, and if they stay will bleed to death. This is what Bush has chosen for his army and his people, who elected him twice.”
The authenticity of the tape could not immediately be verified but the voice sounded like al-Zawahri.
He also warned the US against considering any agreement with Iran. “Iran's objectives are clear: the inclusion of southern Iraq and the east of the (Arabian) peninsula and spreading to join its followers in southern Lebanon,” he said. (Reuters)

Convenient how Al Queda are telling US not to make deal with Iran isnt it!!
'Al Queda' against Iran and Lebanon? I dont think so!!
This is just propaganda pushed by the US, making the case for not having political dialogue between Iran and US.
Andrew T, England,
As we have seen for centuries now, sunni and shia will kill each other. Whether we are in Iraq or not. Also we now see that Al-Qaeda and the Taliban will kill "ALL" who do not believe as they do.
You will see that the muslim sunni world (80%) will not let Iran have the bomb. They will get them.

So is this why America isn't really trying to get rid of Al Qaeda? I hope its not another one of those dreadful mistakes!
mandi, cambridge,
Not buying it. I remember something an Intelligence Official once said, "They can look past their differences when they both agree we're Satan".
Wouldn't be surprised if iran and Al-Qaeda have some ties. But then I wouldn't be surprised if they went after each other the minute we were out of the picture.

The fact that al-Zawahri criticized President Bush's recent decision regarding the suspension of US troop withdraws during the summer, is an indication that al-Qaida is worried about it as a strategy decision. Contrary to what al-Zawahri said the presence of US forces is having a pronounced impact against al-Qaida's efforts in Iraq. According to other media reports al-Qaida is now attacking other sunnis who they suspect are in league with the Iraqi government which will only further undermine al-Qaida in Iraq . What I also found interesting is his comments indicating a possible deal between the US and Iran concerning Iraq. This is the first I heard of this - thanks to the Timesonline, and its excellent reporting of these and other news stories. As an American I can't seem to get any real news in the US - because they are so focused on the color of brittany spears underwear and other such trifles that it can hardly be anything considered anything but entertainment and utter foolishness

Those islam jihadist fundamentalists are always talking their trash. What else are they going to say? Diplomatic double-speak? They remind me of those gaudy-schlock wrestlers on TV, all blab and hardly the substance.

Graham, Bottom line is, he's in hiding bottom line. Tech or no tech, doesn't mean a great deal when he's hiding like a spider under a rock. Typical cowards that they are.
