European governments will agree today to freeze the assets of Iran's biggest bank as part of a tightening of sanctions over Tehran's nuclear programme, Gordon Brown announced this morning.
Speaking at a joint London press conference with President Bush, the Prime Minister also confirmed that Des Browne, the Defence Secretary, is to an increase in the UK troop contingent in Afghanistan to record levels.
Referring to ministerial talks in Luxembourg, Mr Brown said: “Today Britain will urge Europe, and Europe will agree to take further sanctions against Iran.
“We will take action today that will freeze the overseas assets of the biggest bank in Iran, the Melli bank, and secondly action will start today for a new phase of sanctions on oil and gas.”
Mr Brown noted that the EU's foreign policy chief, Javier Solana, had had a latest round of talks with Iran over the weekend. “We await the Iranian response and will do everything possible to maintain the dialogue,” he said.
“We will take any necessary action so that Iran is aware of the choice it has to make to start to play its part as a full and respected member of the international community or face further isolation."
Mr Bush followed up Mr Brown's statement with a declaration that he had not ruled out the use of force if Iran did not comply with international demands over its nuclear activities, although he hoped to end the crisis via diplomacy.
“Now’s the time to work together to get it done,” Mr Bush said. “All options are on the table, however."
Mr Brown's declaration follows a report in an Iranian weekly today that Iran has withdrawn around $75 billion from Europe to prevent the assets from being blocked under new sanctions.
On Saturday, Iran again ruled out suspending uranium enrichment despite the offer by six world powers of help in developing a civilian nuclear programme if it stopped activities the United States and others suspect are designed to make bombs.
The offer - agreed last month by the United States, Britain, Russia, China, Germany and France - is a revised version of one rejected by Tehran two years ago.
Iran’s refusal to suspend nuclear enrichment, which can provide fuel for power plants or material for weapons if refined much more, has drawn three rounds of UN sanctions since 2006. Tehran says it aims only to generate electricity.
On Afghanistan, Mr Brown announced that Britain will send extra troops to Helmand province, although the precise number is to be announced by the Defence Secretary this afternoon.
"Eighteen months ago, the Taleban boasted that they and their paid foreign fighters would drive our forces out of southern Helmand (province). Now most agree that security is on the way to being transformed," he said.
"Today, Britain will announce additional troops for Afghanistan, bringing our numbers in Afghanistan to the highest level."
The announcement comes as the body of the 100th British soldier to die in Afghanistan - seen by both Washington and London as a key frontline against global terrorism - since operations began in 2001 was being repatriated.
Mr Bush also urged Afghanistan and Pakistan to expand dialogue on how to confront militants who operate along their shared border. "There needs to be better co-operation," he said.

Bush & Brown are unfortunately at it again, taking advantage of their power & blatantly misusing it. Exploiting & suppressing other countries at their whim & fancy doesn't resolve any issues, it only escalates. They must extend the hand of friendship, respect independent countries & open dialogues.

Iran is involved in invasion by proxy of southern Iraq via Shia militias and southern Lebanon using Hezbollah waging proxy war on Lebanon's government and Israel. Iran attacked international shipping in the Hormuz in the 1980s. The sacking of the US embassy in 1979 was an attack on the sovereign US.

It is good to know that among Westerners, u r able to c things from d other side of d coin. If there r more people like you, this world would be more peaceful & probably Iran will not need to have Nukes.
What is done 2day affects our future generation.
Peace.

But I'm confused. Why aren't we imposing sanctions on Israel, which has nuclear weapons? Why do we never, ever talk about disarmament any more? Didn't Gordon Brown only just announce that the world needed to build hundreds of nuclear power stations? Can anyone help me?
Ricky, Bakewell, UK
Iran only has to look back into recent history to know that it has far more to fear from Western Powers, Britain and the USA in particular, than we in the West have to fear from Iran. Britain actually invaded Iran, and both the US & Britain have actively interfered in its internal politics?

Ian uk,"Not really, i think most Islamic nations are also terrified by the prospect of a Nuclear armed Iran given Iran's turbulent history".When was the last time Iran invaded any country? If you dont have nukes you get invaded(Iraq)If you do your left alone(North Korea)Oh,Israel has them too.

Kevin, Denver, United States,
Exactly how many countries have Iran invaded in the last 500 years? Please post a list. Thank you sir!
Then post a list for U.S and Israel.

Does Brown, or any of you, believe in nuclear deterrent or not?
If you do, then Iran having the biggest nuclear stockpile in the world is of no threat to us, since they will be deterred from using them because of our deterrent.
If you don't, then renounce it for the insanity it is, and get rid.
Laura Roberts, London, United Kingdom
Why sell Iranian oil if the money is going to be blocked, or if the currencies obtained are not legal tender.
Maybe Iran should stop exporting oil and take 2 million barrels a day out of the oil market.

I think you are quite right. No nation can stand threats.
Asia will welcome any Mid Eastern investments and trade and oil too.
We are definitely against any attempt by any country or block of countries to dominate world affairs using threats and sanctions.

'Why are we stealing their gas?" What kind of ridiculous thing is that to say? We are taking their assets (money) so they don't produce a nuclear bomb and annihilate you, who they hate, without remorse.
Kevin, Denver, United States
1. Iran has has much right to nuclear power and/or weapons as any other country
2. Israel, the biggest threat to the region, needs to go non-nuclear first
3. We can hardly hold ourselves up as a good example whilst we possess such weapons. Of course, we're the "good" guys.
Clive, Surrey,
Iran doesnt care about EU sanctions for one moment !
Perhaps its the EU that need to wake up !
Richard, London, United Kingdom

Not really, i think most Islamic nations are also terrified by the prospect of a Nuclear armed Iran given Iran's turbulent history.
The Saudis, Iraqis, Omanis, Kuwaitis, etc etc will all want no such thing. Likewise Turkey are surely concerned. So really, it is the right thing to do
ian, uK,
Oh the west and their sanctions... No wonder why world power is moving towards the very nations we are quick to use these treats against. Not all wars are won by force I'm afraid.
Eric, Northampton, Tobago
Most Islamic, particularly Arab nations are probably taking notes on how western united nations are able to pressure them with threats and sanctions as being done with Iran. Will they slowly move their economic and financial business towards Asian countries. Are we creating a huge east/west divide?
