Tony Blair hastily cancelled his visit to the Gaza Strip today and headed back to Jerusalem after receiving what his aides described as a "specific security threat" minutes before crossing the border.
With his advanced security party having already gone through the Erez passenger crossing into the territory at 9.45am local time, the international peace envoy's motorcade was ordered to turn around and abort its journey.
The Israel Security Agency said it had received “pinpoint information that Palestinians were planning to attack Blair in Gaza, so the relevant services alerted him to the fact.”
Details of the threat against Mr Blair, who aimed to visit infrastructure projects in his capacity as international Middle Eastern peace envoy, are unknown.
However, as well as security fears, it may have been postponed for diplomatic reasons, as Mr Blair would have had to pass through several Hamas military checkpoints to get to the sites he was visiting, a prospect which it is believed may have caused diplomatic embarrassment, as the West currently has no relations with the territory's Islamist rulers.
The former Prime Minister had not scheduled any meetings with Hamas officials, but the organisation had made security arrangements for the visit, setting up checkpoints in areas he was expected to tour, banning cars from using roads, and lining streets with black-clad policemen carrying AK-47s.
Mr Blair would have been the first major international official to visit the Gaza Strip since Hamas seized power last summer.
Matthew Doyle, Mr Blair’s spokesman, said the envoy called off the visit “due to a specific security threat which would have made it irresponsible to proceed, not just for those visiting but also the local community.
“He looks forward to being able to go to Gaza again in the future and will of course in the meantime continue to work to improve the conditions for the people there.”
Mr Blair had been expected to visit schools and a sewage treatment plant in the town of Beit Lahiya, which make up part of internationally sponsored regeneration and investment initiatives designed to improve Palestinian infrastructure.
He also cancelled a visit expected to Sderot, a town in southern Israel which is the frequent target of rockets fired by Palestinian militants in Gaza.
Taher Nunu, a Hamas spokesman, denied there were any security threats against Mr Blair. “Gaza is still open for all visitors, to break the siege and see the extent of suffering here,” he said.
Mr Blair last visited Gaza in 1998 when he was Prime Minister. The Quartet — the United States, the European Union, Russia and the United Nations — appointed him to the post of envoy a year ago with a focus on economic improvement, to bolster the chances of a peace deal this year.
Since the takeover by Hamas, Gaza has been virtually sealed off from the world by Israel and Egypt, a policy that has received tacit international backing.
Mr Blair has said in recent weeks that a new policy towards Gaza needs to be developed, pointing to the growing suffering of Gaza’s people, but has not offered a plan. The options are limited because much of the international community considers Hamas a terrorist group and has shunned its government.

tony blair in the middle east peace convoy, are u having a laugh
john, london, england
I don't know of any achievements by Mr. Blair for the U.K. or for the rest of the world, other than being a successful "employee" making good money. A good career oriented person would not accept this job, but apparently he cares more for the salary. Bravoo! Good for his wife and children.
saleh darwish, Amman, Jordan
You got to be kidding...waterboarding vs real torture and beheading...captured and incacerated and turned over is not even the same as captured tortured and killed...but then again I hope you get to finally live under their rules and relegion...go figure....Dan, Reno NV

Blair - Middle East Peace Envoy....
Its really a bit like putting a paedophile in charge of a children's nursery. What does Bush get on retirement? Chair of the Green Party?
Mark, Birmingham, UK
It's absolutely grotesque that Blair should have been given any job in the Middle East, let alone that of peacemaking. The mind boggles at the very thought.
This man should be answering for his actions in The Hague along with George W(aterboarder) Bush.
No wonder they're out to get him.
alan, germany,
People tend to forget that the Palestinians themslelves have made their own bed. Obviously what's happened in Gaza is tragic, but it is one manifested by the Palestinians themselves. Quick question- which country, has the killed the most Palestinians?
joseph, London,
DG, Sunderland,: hamas has never declared that it would like to kill all westerners. It refuses Israel's soveriegnty as it was formed from their land and now oppresses them.
Rob, Singapore,
Hamas talk about a siege but what sort of siege allows them to bring whatever weaponry they can get their hands onto into Gaza ?
And what sort of siege is it that those supposedly laying the siege provide electricity to the so called victims who actually are only victim to their own leaders ?
Tony, Edgware, MIdd., UK
Think about where the "intelligence" came from? Israel! Would Israel really want Blair going to the Gaza Strip in the first place? Israeli "intelligence" is a tool of war.
SL, London,
It is quite odd to read people from Cheshire (!) accusing Blair of cowardice because he has been warned that he will be killed if he goes to Gaza. Gaza is governed by an organisation dedicated to the murder of Westerners. It was brave of Blair to even contemplate going there.
DG, Sunderland,
Only Bush himself would be a more inappropriate person to be "Peace Envoy". The question is not whether Blair will fail, but how badly he will do so.
J Robertson, Edinburgh, UK
A clear signal of Mister Blair's standing in the Middle East. If he could climb somewhere near the peak and peer over his ego he might realise this and continue some of his more lucrative pastimes such as talking nonsense to captains of industry.
frizby, London,
Oh dear, in another place it is breaking news that Blair has just cancelled his trip to Gaza because of specific threats and security concerns.
Could a reporter be sent to find out Martin McGinnis's feelings in the matter of pursuing a peace initiative in the face of personal safety?
E.L.SORDO, GLASGOW, SCOTLAND
Apart from the obvious reasons why he should not have been selected, you can now add another one.
The people who selected him did not see the futility of him trying to gain the confidence of the parties involved...other than the wests approved tame politicians.
Tomas, Alicante, Spain
I am very glad this morning, because I can see & read that my fellow CITIZENS are waking up, because the LIONS in BRITAIN have been asleep for 10 years and its time to wake from your slumber,& see these POLITICAL CRIMINALS for who they are. Willing for others to lose their lives & PROTECT THEIR OWN.
Daphne Kenward, Cambridge, UK
I suppose the specific threat was that if he came then Hamas would launch a nuke at London within 45 minutes!
Phil Ishmael, Liverpool,
how did a failed PM ended up with a job as a peace envoy? this guy could organise a booze up in a brewery let alone asking the middle east to consider having peace after the west has stirred them up by supplying weapons etc. blair message from everybody go and hide in a hole with your mate bush.
brian, Scotland,
And now we know for sure the man is a coward. He has no problem risking the lives of others but when the time comes for him to show some courage - he flees.
Caroline Kennedy, San Jose, Costa Rica
God, is Blair a useless coward.
Why is anyone paying this man a salary as a Mideast envoy?
Could it be part of his generous sinecure for following America's ugly policies loyally?
This reminds me of the high churchmen who used to hold posts in churches they never visited.
JOHN CHUCKMAN, Toronto, Canada
Blair's appointment was like employ arsonists as fire fighters.
He did not try to stop Israels invasion of Lebanon the other year.
He invaded and opened up for the suicide bombers in Iraq. His foreign politics in the region is a capital failure.
Peter, Southampton, Southampton,
Coward, he has sent hundreds of British soldiers to their deaths when their was a "specific threat" to them, but is unwilling to take the same risks personally-
COWARD
Russ, Benfleet, England
And he's surprised?
Jeremy Poynton, Frome, Somerset
Here we have a man who was, without blinking an eyelid, send hundreds of our young men to their fateful death or injury in Iraq and Afghanistan but when the chips are down for number one man, he pulls out of a danger spot himself....got his head screwed on has this Blair chap! Could have sent Gordo
Derek Clifton, Andover, Hampshire, England
Another example of Blair's cowardice. He was happy to lie about Iraq and sacrafice other people's lives, but not brave enough to go to Gaza.
steve tea, manchester, cheshire
Of course he's done a lot. He has bought and furnished a house at Sharm el Sheik. What more can you ask of somebody who needs to be in the Middle East to earn his pay?
manny.b, Westcliff-on-Sea, England
Who's footing the bill for this muppet?
W Smith, Manchester,
Surprsingly, Mr Blair wasn't invited to the "Eurabia" festivitIes in Paris! Is the Arabian world Sarko's backyard as a further step for his ambitions?
Thibeaux, Lasne, Belgium
Blair has done very little since being appointed Peace Envoy - it looks as though President Sarkozy of France will achieve far more with his initiation of a Mediterranean Union!
Sally Roberts, London, United Kingdom
