Dick Cheney, the US Vice-President, landed in Tokyo last night for what promised to be a frosty series of meetings, after weeks of outspoken criticism of American policy from within the Japanese Government.
Japanese Cabinet Ministers have openly denounced US policy in Iraq as childish and accused the Bush Administration of being cocky. The latest blow was last week’s agreement on North Korea’s nuclear programme which is privately regarded by many in Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s Government as an American betrayal. Yasuhisa Shiozaki, Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary, could hardly have been more dismissive of Mr Cheney’s visit. “Since the other party is coming over,” he said yesterday, when asked what was the point of Mr Cheney’s visit, “it must have some point for the other party.”
The surge of bad feeling towards Japan’s greatest friend and ally is symptomatic of the unease which has spread since Junichiro Koizumi stepped down last September after five years as the country’s most dynamic postwar Prime Minister. After an impressive first month, in which he began to mend strained relations with China and South Korea, Mr Abe’s popularity has gone into a slump, and he has appeared increasingly incapable of controlling his Cabinet.
Last month his Fumio Kyu-ma, his Defence Minister, became the first Japanese Cabinet Minister openly to question the Bush Administration’s decision to invade Iraq, saying that it was a mistake based on faulty assumption that Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction.

Shame Steve of PX, AZ, can't spell, but like his rational it does nothing to further his or his country's woeful state of thinking. May I remind him that criticism is the mother of free speech not the unwanted bastard and that's what needs to be fought for not some murderous calamity in Iraq, based on nationalistic arrogance and illegal pretence
Paul McCloskey, London, UK
I am glad that the Japanese finally see where the American will lead them to.
Huiyi, Pasadena,
Greeks gave us debate and philosophy. Grass-root individual democracy gave us rational debate. Thats where US comes in.
Prabhat, UK,
you people who are taken in with all the medias lies. who cant even see they have their own political agenda.(which is whatever Bush believes in we dont support it) and was all started by the Democrats. should get off your guilty conciences and support America and quit burrying your heads in the sand because there is a rude awakening thats comming very soon. Our enemys are all laughing at the way we all wring our hands and blam the US for everything that is bad in this world. Very soon we will be fighting the war here because the liberal democrats think that if we a pull out of Iraq than everything will be hunky dorry. Please Stop all of this retoric and realize we all need to stick together as a nation who has always had to fight for freedom. Freedom is not Free.
Steve, PX, AZ
You'd think the US would have learnt from what happened in Vietnam, but I guess not.
SC, Lancs., UK
I am ashamed to be called am American at this time in history. I just read an article about one of our soldiers who raped and then murdered a fourteen year old Iraqi girl along with her entire family. The I go out and see "support our troops" stickers on cars. How can I support these atrocities? I wish I had been born somewhere else!
Alan Wadsworth, PORT ST LUCIE, U.S.A. / Florida
'We are the big guys and will not "self destruct".' This comment is from a suposedly rational citizen of the United States - god help us all if this is the attitude of the leaders of the Western World
David, Pembroke, Wales
I thought the Greeks gave rational debate to the world.
Neil, London,
I really wish THE TIMES would actually display the articulate ariticles that Americans write, since they seem to be biased and have excluded my former wrightings in leiu of other Americans whom seem to make us look like asses. This is the "Jerry Springer" approach and is most insulting to a nation that helped Britain defeat Nazism as well as Communism. I do hope THE TIMES honors it's own existance in such a free society.
Tom, Bremerton, WA
The thrust of the article is: Vice-President Cheney didn't get a famously warm reception in Japan, where officials have criticized American policy vis-a-vis Iraq.
Fair enough. It took the USA and the Allies forty-four months to save Earth from the Axis juggernaut, so knowledgeable Japanese impress their superior judgement and resolve through childishness.
Most people don't speak Japanese, or German, or Russian, or Arabic.
To them, I say, on behalf of America: You're welcome.
Jesse, FL, USA
"...take a lesson from dictators." Have I misunderstood? Do you mean to tell me that you think that a substantial majority of thinking persons globally do not think of American foreign policy as eminating from dictators. Bush is the closest thing to Hitler the world has seen for a long time. And as for enjoying a strong relationship with the Japanese since the war: perhaps a straw poll of those survivors of the bombings of Nagasaki and Hiroshima, the only time nuclear bombs have ever been used, and against a defenceless civilian population, may provide an illuminating antidote to the "Foxtel perception" this gives the impression of being.
Nicholas Peterson, Perth, Australia
I have been reading comments (mostly from Americans) here for the last couple of days. I have to say my understanding that Americans are capable of rational debate and taking factual criticism on the chin was a grave misconception. Why is it that a criticism of American policy is taken as criticism of American history? Why is it that America which gave the gift of rational debate to the world appears to have failed miserably at that? Why is it that Americans can not and will not accept that they are humans with same aspirations and fears as every other human on this planet?
If this is the reality of America today, it should concern every rational American who recognises himself as a human first and God's gifted creation second.
And no I am not a leftie. I am simply baffled by the aggressive posturing of some individuals here suggesting that they represent centre-right thinking.
Prabhat, UK,
Why do we need to have bases in every corner of the globe? I don't see any other countries having military bases here in America, so why is this double standard tolerated? While we spend more than half our taxes on the military, we are the only developed country not to have health insurance for its people, our education system is in shambles, and our roads, bridges, and other infrastructure is in need of repair.....just look at what happened to New Orleans! It's time we stop this senseless militarism, which is hurting people abroad and here in the U.S. We need the leaders and people of other countries to stand with us, the American population, against the evildoers in our own government that are starting unnecessary wars, wasting our taxes, and shredding the Bill of Rights, all for the pursuit of more power and riches.
Ana Sanchez, Newport Beach, CA., U.S.A.
I apologize how many Americans on here poorly represent our nation. I do assure you there are those of us who are well informed and not complete idiots.
The deal struck with North Korea is something of an appeasement. On the one hand they are theorhetically giving up their nukes... on the other hand we should take a lesson from history about buying off dictators because we don't want to deal with them.
Japan is an important ally and our peoples have enjoyed a strong friendship since the war. I do hope that the new Japanese government will be as effective and as much of a friend as Koizumi was.
Ryan B, Oklahoma City, OK, USA
IRAQ 911? There were no Iraqi's involved in 911.
Weapons inspectors were in the country with free reign when we made them leave because we were going to start the bombing.
We have attacked and occupied a soveregn nation that had, neither the will nor the capability to attack us. And we have killed thousands upon thousands of innocent people.
Matt, WE STARTED THIS WAR!! IRAQ HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH 911!!! wake up and quit falling for the propaganda.
DR, vancouver, washington
The explanation is simple. When the bold act, the weak get cranky.
Gary Morley, Paris, Texas, USA
Mr. Cheney got what he deserved. He and Bush are arrogant war mongers that have done much more harm than good with their illegal war. If either of them had any integrity they would admit they were wrong and resign. This unfortunatety will never happen because the Cheney's and Bush are making money hand over fist on the blood of our children.

I will not defend the Bush admin for their handling of the Iraq war. They were not prepared to get off the boat and start the fight to win. Nor will I forgive the admin before who gave us the word lewinsky to sum up its approach to terror. I am with the cut and run Demo's bring all our troops home secure our borders and tell the rest of the world to go to hell in their own individual ways. Don't brother us and we won't brother you.
Unfortunately we the US are no longer the brave stock we once where.

Tatiana,
Great the 80,000,000 who died at USSR's attempt at equality for the masses while enriching the elite will be conforted by your concern, and I would guess the thousands that heve been killed in southern Russia would understatnd your isues with the US, it will make them feel better. When you clean up your mess, the killing and become like France and England and understand your just another has-been power who dream of the USSR failure and days long gone. Forgot to mention, Finland , Poland, the Baltic states, ect, ect, ect, who know Russia's kindness and ever present greed for their land and resources.
Yaakov, Washington DC, USA
Tatiana,
The "whole world" condemned Iraq for years, with their pointless UN resolutions denouncing Saddam's and Iraq's repeated refusal to honor the peace agreement they signed after the first Gulf War. To say that America could end Terrorism by simply laying down its arms is to assume that everyone in the world wants peace, and that is, sadly untrue. It suprises me that someone from Russia, a country with its own recent history of terrorism against it, would have such a misguided world view.
Japan is wrong in this instance. You don't have to agree with your allies, but to be openly hostile towards them is a mistake that could cost you dearly in the future, especially if your economy (like Japan's) depends on the other nation supporting it.
Jim, Lansing, Michigan
Tatiana claims America created terrorism ? Is this the new party line in Russia? Can I suggest she study the Beslan School Massacre where Muslims killed 300 children. Yeah Bush did it. Keep burying your head in the sand.
Dennis, New Jersey, USA
In response to Tatiana (from Moscow), history is going to prove Ken's comments to be correct... there were WMD and they were moved to Syria where they still exist. And the sad thing about it, according to statements from one of Russia's generals who do this, they were loaded and transported by Russian military cargo planes. So your statement that there were no WMD are diengenuous at best.
Regarding this being an illegal invasion, if you think enforcement of the violation of 17 different UN resolutions is not legal basis, then truly you do need to need to find a differnt source for your news, because someone is keeping the truth from you. Just maybe it is Putin!
Matthew, Atlanta, GA, USA
Well Josh, and look what Idi Amin leaving brought to his country.. certainly not peace nor democracy..
SK, London, UK
Those who live in glass houses should not throw stones! As far as I am concerned the Japanese can go take a flying leap!
S. Baker, Warren , MI USA
Abe joins the ranks of the childish, trying to redirect all criticism on the scapegoat Bush and the US. No wonder Abe is not popular in Japan. The Japanese are very smart people and can see through Abe's deficient leadership skills.
Mike, Riverton, NJ USA
In response to "tatiana", do you really think America is trying to take Iraq's oil fields? If so, it's a spectacular failure. Have you noticed the price of oil? Not exactly the "free" oil we would have if we were taking Iraq's, is it?
Americans don't even control their own oil fields. We have many enormous untapped fields, but we don't touch them either. Please go to enviroweenie websites and influence them to allow us to tap our own, Okay?
Hal, Jasper, Alabama, USA
For the USA, fear the enemy within.....between free TV, the democRATS and news organizations like the Times, it's like listening to Tokyo Rose all over again.
SoDamnInsane did a real number on the Iraqi's, fear is a powerful thing to overcome, especially when you live with it for decades.
Remind me, who is strapping on the bombs and going into crowds in Iraq, Britian, Spain, Bali and killing innocents now?
For the person from Angola...how is it with the Dos Santos government? I'm glad they are helping you all out.
For the person from Russia, give our regards to Putin. He sure is a stand up guy, ask the Alexander Litvinenko family.
Pease through Strength
Pam Wright, Liberty Township, OH
I do agree with Bruce from Pheonix on one thing: The US must stop being the police force for the world. I'm shocked at Bruce's hatred for his own country though. The US will fall if people like him continue to spread their line of BS as truth. Iraq is failing because idots like him and the US press are wanting it to fail. Has ANYTHING positive been in the press regarding Iraq? Iraq is a mess because Syria and Iran are sending people in to blow up people at funerals and at the mall shopping. The US should be like China and only concern itself with building up it's economy and taking care of business at home. Bruce move to Mexico and do the US a favor. Comprende?
RIck, Singapore, Singapore
How embarrassing it is to have many Americans still believe that there were WMDs in Iraq and that Saddam was responsible for the 9/11 attacks. They continue to make up stories to reassure themselves that the invasion of Iraq was done for reasons other than the corporate takeover of that country's energy sources. Perhaps they cannot give up their myths because the reality is too painful but I do have to blame, in part, the mainstream media in the U.S. Thanks to Clinton and his 1996 Telecommunications Act, six corporations own most media in the U.S. Thanks to Bill, there no longer is a free press in the U.S. and now, apparently, candidates like his wife (and DLC clones like Obama, who uses many words to say nothing) want to finish up the corporatization of the U.S.
Fran, Suburbia, Illiniois IL
As an American living and working overseas I can finally say... ENOUGH. America goes to war for oil? Fine, then why not invade Venezuela or Mexico? That's where most imported American oil comes from. Middle East oil is mostly for Europeans, Chinese and Japanese... Why is America guraranteeing their economic lifeline? As for Iraq being illegal, since when is enforcing a UN mandate illegal? George Bush wants to kill off the UN? How many times did Clinton go to the UN for justification of his adventures in Sudan, Afghanistan and Iraq? Answer - Zero, nada, none. Thats right, the current President was trying to make the UN relevant. You cannot be relevant if you make warnings without backing them up.
So OK, every hates America... They hated America under every president in the last century - inlcuding their beloved Bill Clinton. So the answer is this... Step off. Its time to let the Franco/German/Sino/Russian/Iranian coaltion do their thing. Time to step back...
John, The Hague, NL
tatiana, thank you for the laugh. I know you meant that as a sarcastic joke, but I enjoyed it immensely. And Todd, I am glad you refer to Americans as "them" and not us, you are quite accurate in that terminology. And God help us if you think the dems are gonna do the trick and fix everything, they're a mess.
Judith, Canton, MA
If America is Japan's greatest friend then I'm a koala bear.
A.N.Onymous, The Town of Many Roads, Shire
Its time to dispel the myth that the USA supports the rest of the world with its money. The $ is the de facto world reserve currency; it accounts for 65% of all official exchange reserves, 82% of all ForEx transactions, 51% of all world exports are denominated in $s. Also, all IMF loans are in $s. The more $s there are circulating outside the US, or invested by foreign owners in US assets, the more the rest of the world has had to provide the US with goods & services in exchange for these $s. US$ cost the USA next to nothing to produce, so the fact that the world uses the currency in this way means that the US is importing huge quantities of goods & services virtually for free. Because so many foreign-owned $s are not spent on US goods & services, the US can run a huge trade deficit year after year without apparently any major economic consequences. Latest figures (Nov06), show US imports were worth 48% more than US exports. No other country can run such a big trade deficit with impunity. In effect, the USA is getting a massive interest-free loan from the rest of the world.
Joe, London, UK
I wonder if the right wing nuts have ever given it a thought that since WW11 we have been it seem's continually at war and won none.We have now become the aggresser on the world stage as we try to create an empire built on blood while the nation at home decays from the inside out like some hugh cancer that will not rest until it has consumed the entire nation...
Robert Ferrin, Bliss, U.S.A.
In response to Tatiana,
The USA is trying to help develop a democratic state in the middle east. Unfortunately those same forces that are killing Russian school children and attacking Russians in Chechnya are killing people in Iraq. It is not the US that is causing all the Blood shed. It is not the US that is targetting civilians witrh massive bombs and it is not the US that is trying to nationalize our natural gas supplies and production as a way of controlling people in other countries. If the US decided to leave now there would be mas killings and no peace. And to compare the way people are treat under Hussein with the way they are treat now by the US is just plain ignorant unless you enjoy state sponsored rape and murder.
David, cincinnati,
When you secular progressive folks are without a job, when your ability to move about the vast distances in the USA is only on bicycle (if you can get one), food is scarce, there is no heat or electricity, disease is everywhere and no one can afford doctors or medicine, when morals break down (would you not steal, cheat even maybe kill to save your kids from starving or freezing), and we can go on and on. All these undesirables would come about without energy -- oil --- my fellow human animals. See New Orleans? This is not only possible it is a certainty. Either you are the winner or you are not. There is no in between. Take some time to think about what is at stake for each and every common American (not the elite); or the entire Western world for that matter. The barbarians are at the gate. How benign would Iran, Russia and China be? Look to how they punish their own people for crimes for a taste of the answer. What are you going to do?
Brimo, Bailey's Crossroads, Virginia
Jim, you might be interested to know that a far higher percentage of German POW's died at the hands of our Russian allies (50%) than allied POW's at the hands of the Japanese (27%). Like all generalizations, the "evil Japanese" one needs to be treated with a degree of circumspection. 60 years has passed since the war ended and we should all be now calm enough to face facts, rather than whip up more prejudice.
James Montgomery, NYC,
Your right the people in this country know so little but yet go on as if privy to the highest order.Got some photo's that a friend took in the Gulf War of the WMD nerve gas etc cases upon cases of it, filled hugh tents and one guess as to where it came from yep the good ole U.S.A. point of departure Fl.,old man Bush could tell you volumes about this and why it had to be destroyed before anther administration took over, hense the Gulf war.
There is a very good but quite long artical on Asia Times written by a man who was in the State Deparment under both Johnson and Nixon who lays out the whole slimy mess of Rumsfeld,Reagan and thier bed partner Saddam, read and enjoy your journey into the belly of the beast. We are what we are.!!!
Robert Ferrin, Bliss, U.S.A.
It is time the United States looked after it's interests and not the world. America must keep it's bases in the UK and Iceland and Okinawa and Diego Garcia and let Eurasia erupt into it's century old warfare of murdering each other as they always have.
America has oil, finance, resources and military power. Let Japan and Europe enjoy their play partners in Russia, China and Iran.
The biggest mistake was America's Marshall plan in rebuilding twit nations and dying for them. We should have let wars and guerilla wars erupt in Europe and Asia. It would have made men out of the spineless ignorants which now are the socialist ilk not seeing Iraq was keeping your homes warm with oil.
Enjoy Russian blackmail and Chicom threats as America does not need you. Fight your own wars and enjoy them as you know so much better after startin 2 world wars and hundreds of others.
Lame Cherry, USA, USA
Amen Matt! Remember who started this war. It was planes full of Iraqis on a suicide mission to... Huh? Not Iraqis? It was mostly Saudis? Uh, never mind. Rah, rah, rah USA!
Hillbilly Buttnut, Jingo, AL,
I find that a lot of the responses from americans are extremely aggressive and disrespectful of other people. I think the u.s. acts aggressively because the people are aggressive overall. It pains me to see such hatred.
javier cruz, montreal, canada
hey jim,
it continues to amaze how you red staters still can't get it right. the inspectors in iraq were pulled out by bush before the bombing started. saddam did not, i repeat, DID NOT remove them. have you ever heard of scott ritter? how about hans blix? go to google and carefully type in their names and you may, at last, get your "facts" staight. good luck, cowboy.
robert, seattle, washington
Jim, Blue Springs, MO - your comment is perhaps the most ill-informed one yet posted on this site. Japan's mistakes were made generations ago and have been apologised for. American mistakes are ongoing and, as one of your senators recently said on CNN, Iraq is the biggest of them all. And still your administration defends this war.
"rebuilt thier nation even when it hurt our nation"? Do you seriously believe this? US involvement in Japan post-1945 had two motives - to create a strong, anti-communist (USSR, China, North Korea) bulwark state so as not to give up the north-eastern Pacific rim to unfriendly powers, and to create a viable trading partner - both aims achieved to the benefit of both countries. The US / Japan alliance came into being because it was vital to the interests of both countries, NOT "because we defeated thier military ".
As for the US auto industry - uh-huh, we really need more inefficient gas guzzling behemoths in the world. If only we all had Hummers.
Joe, Tokyo, Japan
How can you Americans be so misinformed? Saddam did not cause September 11. The war in Iraq is not solving the problem of terrorism at ALL, it is just making Muslims around the world angrier and angrier, making matters worse. The Japanese have found the error of their ways after world war II and have put nonagression in its constitutional law. They and most of Europe knew it was wise to keep out of Iraq, to have no hand in destabilising the middle east.
If only the leaders of Britain Spain and Australia didnt support this invasion, maybe subways in London and Madrid and the Australian embassy in Jakarta wouldnt have been bombed, maybe Australian citizens would not have been targeted by suicide bombers twice in Bali.
Phillip , Melbourne, Australia
America is the land of opportunity. As PT Barnum said, no one has ever lost money underestimating the stupidity of the American people. Who needs science when you have intelligent design?
Vern Inbred, Podunk, USA
Its a shame TODD thinks all world problems can he solved by holding hands and singing John Lennon songs.Same liberals that claimed Iran was the real threat now cower at the thought of action against Iran. Left wing idiocy.
Dennis, New Jersey, USA
Prior to the war this type of behavior was known as anti-americanism. Now government officials and the press try to justify it as a reaction to the Iraq war, but it's still the same garbage. By the way, China is in fact the party who is actually had by Iran over a barrel of oil, but people blinded by partisan politics tend not to research economic facts.
Ashton, New Haven, CT
Bruce --
On behalf of the "Big Nosed Yanks" to whom you so glibly point your barbs and jabs. I hope you are enjoying your stay and/or life in Phoenix: a wonderful city, in a beautiful state in a free country. I wonder if you would feel so brazen and speak accordingly in , oh say, North Korea? Iran? Saddam's Iraq? Cold War Russia? Mussolini's Italy? Hitler's Germany? My guess is probably not. And thanks to country's worldwide who will do the right thing when necessary, you will not need worry. You're welcome.
Bob, St. Louis, MO, USA
Bruce has a typical fundamentalist view of the world...racist, to be sure, but fundie.
He thinks arabs are too stupid to invent fascist ideologies...as they've done for a thousand years. He thinks European racist colonialism had no effect on the cultures of the middle east. To him, it's the 'yanks' (sic).
There's little difference between his fundamentalist views, and those of any other ignorant savage. The problem is, he should know better.
Bob, Dallas, USA/TX
I wish the USA would pay more attention to the problems we have in the USA and tell other Countries to manage their own problems.
To stop all $$ aid to foreign countries and start fixing the problems we have!!
Like Mexico...we have sent Millions $$ to them, and they still don't take care of their own. It's not the responsibility of Americans to fund anyone that is not a citizen.
Bob C, USA, USA
It's laughagle when all the countries who rely on the U.S. for their defense then relive the events leading up to the Iraq war and solely blame the U.S. (yes mistakes were made). The blind leftists in the U.S. only want to criticize Bush and ignore the growing threat of Iranian dominance in the Middle East after the U.S. vacates. The blind leftists talk about the U.S.'s interest in oil, yet with Cuba & China, ready to drill 45 miles from Miami, that doesn't alarm them. Let's do two things:
1) relive the "blunders" of Japan after their invasion of China and Southeast Asia 2) Wonder why the blind leftists continue to be hypocrites and use the oil that they despise.
Don, houston, texas
The US military is the ultimate garantor of the world's corporate economic system. What really freaks the Japanese government and a lot of other folks, in Europe too, is if the USA are going to have to be ruled by wierd Christian cultists and other obvious incompetents, what is going to happen to the whole project of corporate globalization?
If this incompetence proceeds to the point where the US economy is no longer capable of fielding such a massive military, what then?
Japan has prospered mightily by passively going along to get along, and by quietly building Toyotas and Hondas for the US market. If the US goes bust, so does Japan.
The same sense of disarray and panic are to be seen in London or Berlin. Less so in Paris.
Chris Herz, Washington, DC, USA
Wow, I've never read so many hasty generalizations used in one discussion in my life.
Sarah , Portland, Oregon
Dave from the United States; The majority of Brits would resent your comments, a minority would 'have a word in your shell" and an even smaller minority would genuinely wish to swing for you. Please stop telling us "We owe you one for World War 2".
As to the Intelligence for the Iraq war, we could debate this until the cows come home, but the end result is that it was wrong, we manipulated that Intelligence and many more than the 3,000 who died on 9/11 have perished as a result of us invading Iraq. I use the term 'We' as it was Us, the U.K. and The U.S.A. who invaded Iraq
Julian Hutchings, London, UK
Study the Japanese treatment of POW's in WWII. Maybe they should reflect on thier mistakes in the Philippines and China? We are good allies with Japan because we defeated thier military and then rebuilt thier nation even when it hurt our nation. Imagine how strong the U.S. auto industry would be without Japanese or German made cars. Saddam pretended to have WMD. Kicking out inspectors and playing a shell game, he wanted the world and the U.S. to think he had WMD's. Well we did and the Japanese did! You want to rethink mistakes in the past, rethink Pearl Harbor.
Jim, Blue Springs, MO
Amen Chuck!
Oh and Tatiana, you really think that if America pulls out of Iraq, that the terrorists will simply leave us alone? They started this war, does September 11th ring a bell?
Matt, Huntsville, AL
Do you realize how much money Japan lends to the USA every week? Make no mistake about it: USA needs Japan and will continue to need Japan, as long as USA is the biggest debtor nation in the world. Fools can't see the reality. I've been to Japan. It's a fabulous country.
Nathan, New York,
David, Washington, DC
No America did not put Sadam in power, in fact he assasinated his way there. Even eliminating the monarchy which we supported.
AND
The French were essential to America winning independance. They came to her aid in many ways. They provided training and military support. The French navy blockaded ports and prevented Corwallis from escaping Genreral Wahington precipitating the surrender of the Red Coats. Franklin secured formal recognition of the United States in Europe and thus helped LIBERATE HER by means listed above.
Learn Your History Mate--before you betray yourself for what you are -- at very least ignorant of the FACTS of history.

Wow, they've gotten the Japanese to be officially rude to them. that's possibly a diplomatic first.
Carol, Seattle, Washington, the decreasingly united states
Japan and western Europe become too comfortable due to United States protection and support. If United States leave them to defend themselves, they will fall flat on their face. Japan will be under the Chinese grip and Europe will be a Muslim state. The world is very rough. To pretend or believe that everyone can honestly love and get along is ignorance.
Jean, DeKalb, Illinoios
Japanese culture is founded on personal responsibility, humility and shame, while those who support Bush invariably have none of these traits. This explains the blinkeredness of several of the comments, such as those by Josh, Joe and Ken. The Japanese believed Bush's lies and that has been profoundly humiliating. That you are also not humiliated by Bush's actions says much about you, and it is not good.
Stephen, Maplewood, NJ
Blame Saddam and the Iraqis? Okay, Saddam certainly had blood on his hands, but, uh, didn't the US put into power in the first place? And I thought we were fighting terror - and Osama bin Laden - not Iraqi citizens.
Wouldn't it have been nice if the French government had come to the British colonies back in 1776 and liberated us from the Brits - would we have welcomed them as liberators?
David, Washington, DC,
Well, Tatiana from Moscow...
The US didn't create the Chechen terrorists. Why is it that Russians always talk a good game when it comes to peace or the laying down of arms but can't see their own hypocrisy?
When Russia stops its war in Chechnya (which, btw, I believe is legal) and stops pursuing Chechen terrorists, then Russia will have standing to comment on the US war on terror.
Brian, Indianapolis, USA
Once upon a time, the rest of the democratic world really was grateful to the US for helping deter the Stalinist Soviet Union...the 'domino' theory was a real, live danger. But peace prevailed, did it not? Except the US corporations that make arms didn't like that, so there was no 'peace dividend' for the american people or for anyone else. More enemies were needed; friends are only friends if they're scared and need lots and lots of US weapons to protect themselves with.
We're tired, folks...tired of the lies, tired of the endless parade of enemies and most of all, tired of endless US fear-mongering and needless violence. Ask any combat veteran what they feel about war...they'd rather have peace. Only those with minds stunted by years of poor quality, violence-riddled entertainment and a highly selective focus on the nasty, vengeful bits of the bible would think that war is preferable to peace. The US is in its twilight just like Rome...morally bankrupt and addicted to violence.

As an American, let us not forget 9/11. This was an horrific act and what should the President have done? The intel on Irag was shared and agreed upon by the world community. I have friends in the intelligence community and most say that we can fight our foes either here on our soil or where they reside. I prefer they die on their soil. It is horribe indeed that we have lost over 3000 of my brave military, however we forget the horrific numbers of dead and the many defeats we suffered in WW. II. You in the UK should not forget the help from the U.S. a generation ago. You were very close to adopting German as your national langugae...a little love please!
dave, Castaic, United States
As an American and a Navy veteran it is appalling what the Bush Administration has done to America. The entire world looks at us American's in disdain and rightfully so. The very same people who posted on here and are acting self-righteous are the very same shills that voted for Bush TWICE! From WMD, Katrina, and now Iraq it is no wonder why.
Jeff, CHicago, USA
Those who support bush' policy should wear the uniform and go to Iraq and come back in a coffin. The cause of war is just the desire to get rich, and Bush (father and son) are well aware of what business mean... aren't they the only two presidents that attacked Iraq? Excuse me!! what else can you say?

If just once the US would stop propping up the rest of the world with it's money, the world might not take such an uncivil tone with its sole benefactor.

Having read the comments from Americans, it would seem that Americans live in one world, and the rest of us (apart from Tony Blair) live in another. America mostly gives 'aid' in support of its own political and economic interests.
America has probably destabilized or interfered in more countries than any other, including Iran. Like Iran it has a leader who appears to be a nut, the difference being that it is, by far, a larger threat to world peace than any other.
When is the rest of the world going to demand that America give up its weapons of mass destruction?
kevin, Jhb, South Africa
If the world doesn't like us then quit asking for our help when the earthquakes and other disasters hit. I'm sick and tired of hearing all the whining when the world has their hands out. If I ran the country any country that complained about us moves to the bottom of the line for hand outs.

Curious how we don't hear these choruses roundly criticizing the U.S. when others are in need of aid or defense (yes, you.)

Zeldadll, Bailey's Crossroads, Virginia
In response to Josh from Florida. To assume that Iraqis are too immature to accept democracy is the typically naive view that has blighted much of the USA's foreign policy. This idea that "democracy and freedom" are synomonous is completely wrong. Freedom is an abstract concept. Just as people's view of a terrorist and a freedom fighter differ so do people's ideas of freedom. It is also very naive to assume that everone wants Ameican democracy, Imposing it on people is akin to Britain's "civilising mission" commonly known as colonialism. Of course there are a percentage of Iraqis who want democracy but there are also a large share who want Sharia law. Things aren't black and white, good and evil, despite Bush's protestations, but that is the problem with religious zealots. Bush's lack of a coherent post Saddam policy is more at fault than anything whether you agree with the war or not. The world is more unstable now and the chance of democracy in Iraq far slimmer. Regime change is a fallacy, countries can only change from within.
Dodds, London, England
The Korean problem is one that is a no win situation. No matter what the Bush administration does, we will get criticized. We let the 6 party talks continue, we get criticized. We don't talk directly to N korea, we get criticized. N korea makes deal with 6 party and we get criticized. The Japanese changed their government. New people are in, we get criticized.
The fact is that not one of you would be where you are without the US. We are the big guys and will not "self destruct". We took out Saddam, liberated millions and you helped us. Thank you. We will also try to prevent Iran from planting a nuke up your behind also. Keep up the rant. You play golf better than we do as a group. Thats about it.

Who in their right mind would listen to this man, nothing he has said in the last 4 years has had one bit of truth to it. This man is a major embarassment to any real American.
Mark Jensen, Fishers, IN
People should embrace a little reality. Fact Japan gets nearly all her oil from IRAN. Iran, Iraq, the entire Middle East is intertwined. Iran is winning in Iraq. Make no mistake that is what is happening. You all are largely to blame. Yes you, who are so self-righteous you dont even acknowledge God. This is a geo-strategic and geopolitical struggle going on here. Japan is beginning to see what side of the bread the butter will be on if you people don't wake up. The Iranian side, that is what side. FACT the standard of living, your comfy chair in the USA is a result of Americans being the current King of the Hill. You get and stay there through strength, not playing nicey nicey. Unfortunately humans are actually animals and the law of the jungle prevails. Contemplate this; would any other King of the Hill be so benign? Russia? China? Or even Spain, France or Britain? We have already seen how those three ruled when they were the world powers at various times in history.
Zeldadll, Bailey's Crossroads, Virginia
Japan may be frustrated at the US response to the North Korean regime's overtures, but what sane country would not at least entertain the prospect, especially when there also is Iran rattling their sabres?
It is interesting to note the heavy criticism of the US, including from some of these readers. Name calling, personalizing issues, and taking simple views. Oh, its bad, then it MUST be those ugly Americans and especially Bush! Never mind the sale of nuclear technology by Russia, contiuous corruption at the UN, the starving masses in North Korea, and the dependence on a US umbrella defense worldwide by other countries.
Finally, it has been extensively documented that Iraq had a WMD program- its just not politically expedient for opponents of Bush and the US to recognize it.

Josh's learning experience is incomplete. The idea that Iraqis don't want "real freedom" is silly. What they don't want, first of all, is to be invaded by a country half way round the world and have thousands upon thousands of them killed for no good reason. The idea that Josh and his buddies were bringing them "freedom" by killing them is beyond idiotic. He appears to have been brainwashed by the Pentagon slogan/lie of Operation Iraqi Freedom. I doubt Josh will advance much more in his understanding. His brain seems more dead than alive. He went to Iraq in 2004 because he was sent there by the warmongers and imperialists in Washington. If he believed the nonsense they spewed out, too bad for him.
Hal, Tucson,
Yes, you in Europe are always quick to criticize the USA. Just remember history shows your impotence. The latest war in the former Yugoslvia told just how much you people enjoy sticking your heads in the sand. There we had a war in Europes own front yard and none of you stepped up against Malosovic. We had to do it for you. The same with WW2. And yes the same in Iraq. Your methods of appeasement never worked and if it weren't for the USA propping you up. You'd all be speaking German and living under a brutal dictator. Remember, Saddam signed an agreement after he lost the 1st Gulf war saying he would disarm. Then he thumbed his nose at 14 UN resolutions and still wouldn't let UN inspectors in. Then he fired on NATO (mostly US) airplanes. If this doesn't constitute acts of war. I don't know what does. WMD as everyone with a clue knows were smuggled into Syria and Iran at the beginning of the US invasion of Iraq. Now consider yourselves enlightened by a Yank.
John, NJ, USA
Bruce - Most of the problems in the world are caused by the US?
Hmm... Darfur, Saddam, Ahmedinejad, French riots, hordes of Mexicans illegally coming to US, Hugo Chavez, Fidel Castro, Islamic fundamentalism and terrorism, Chinese lack of human rights, Tibet, Beslam, Putin, Robert Mgabe, AIDS, bird flu, teachers having sex with their students, 8 year olds having sex with 8 year olds while in class, Eurpope's 10% unemployment rate...
This is the last of the major problems that have been or are reported on during the Bush administration. Exactly how is the US blamed for these world problems? Or what world problems are you actually referring to?

In response to Josh's post: Actually, in late 2002, Saddam made
an offer, through "back channels", to leave Iraq with his two sons
in order to avoid all out war. The proposal was eventually taken to
Richard Perle, who of course rejected it. The Bush administration
lied and misled the American people to gain support for a war that
had nothing to do with fighting terrorism, and ignored years of
research by the state department and pentagon as to the chaos
that would follow deposing Hussein.

Listen up people. This just in. The snow on the ground that was always thought to be white is now revealed to be actually be black. Furthermore, the direction that an airplane heads after takeoff is officially down not up. And finally it is now agreed that the majority of people hold their toothbrush in their left hand. How could our ancestors have been so wrong?

I wish the USA would pay more attention to the problems we have in the USA and tell other Countries to manage their own problems.
To stop all $$ aid to foreign countries and start fixing the problems we have!!
Like Mexico...we have sent Millions $$ to them, and they still don't take care of their own. It's not the responsibility of Americans to fund anyone.
Bob C, USA, USA
To Todd and Tatiana. Actually, it's your total aversion to action that has emboldened our enemies to plan violence against us. The whole world does not want peace. We are not all the same people wanting the same thing. Cultures and desires are different. This whole utopian mentality is dangerous and has been disproven throughout history. As soon as we lay down our arms, our enemies will come to occupy us. Spain laid down it's arms and received continued threats and attacks as a result. Tell me how that is good!>?

here in the US, George Bush has accomplished one thing, and one thing only--
he has successfully isolated this country from the rest of the globe that he is so hell bent on doing "business" with.
This guy is straight out of Glengarry Glen Ross--

Note to the rest of the world: Hold on, we are correcting this grievous error. It may be that he is able to continue to occupy the Oval Office for the next 22 months, but it will be in a much diminished capacity.

It angers me that we cannot talk about anything politicial without someone calling the other names. As soon as we start talking logically someone throw's in name calling. First we do not know all the in and out's of why we went to war, even the reasons stated after 911 has been changed to suit one side or the other. Example WMD, most people think it is nukes, but it also includes nerve gas etc., which has been found in Iraq. But has not recieved media attention. It seems that most people slant the information to suit their needs or ideas. I say it's neither, Bush is only one person who is trying to do what he thinks best and which we elected him for it. The same with Bill Clinton. But since we are at war let's finish it. It's clear these guys are not going away. To stop now no matter where we are will enbolden others. We must remember just this type of conversations we are having are punishable by death in some regilious countries with no appeal to any authority.

About time the Japanese stand up too to the US. Immatured, cocky are certainly rightly chosen words. The Japanese know the US better than the other way round - how many Americans have visited Japan (or most other countries)? The US should make obeisance to the Japanese - they have much to learn from them (and everybody else) - it is the Japanese (and Chinese) sugar-papasans who are keeping the delinquent US economy alive and the US consumers happy.

I wonder how many lives would have been saved if the UN hadn't been corupted under the Oil for Food Program. Every drop of Blood loss in Iraq is on the hands of Saddam, and those UN and European leaders that took his bribes. President Bush gets called lots of names but he didn't take bribes and let Iraq Citizens starve, that was the most mature UN that aided Saddam and allowed Coruption to occur at the highest levels of Governments.

It's a BIG concern of every right-thinking individual, where this bush regime sticks their nose in!! Most of the problems in the world are caused by the yanks sticking their BIG NOSES in to other countries affairs!!
I bet Washington and the yanks would go crazy if other world nations started telling them how to manage their business!! But not to worry...the usa will slowly self-destruct....I'll bet the bush regime won't meddle with Iran. The Iranians have them over a barrel (of oil) HA HA HA !!!
Bruce , Phoenix, usa
Xelema, you don't know a thing about Japan, I assume. America is by far Japan's closest ally. The occupation has a lot more to do with the fact that Japan does not have a military and therefore we are committed to defending them. Anyways, I could go through hundreds of reasons and examples showing why and how we are close, or you could just take my word for it as an American currently living and working in Japan.
Daniel, Kagawa Prefecture, Japan
Everyone in the press is blaming the USA and Bush for the Iraq mess. Why do they not blame Sadaam and the Iraqi people themselves for not wanting real freedom? Sadaam was offered a chance to leave the country, Idi Amin did it, Sadaam wanted to plunge his people into war for over 20 years, where is the history left writting any of this? I went to Iraq at the age of 40 in 2004 because it was a noble cause to instill some type of democracy there and in the region. My thinking is now with the Japenese cabinet official who said it was immature. It has been a learning experience and my take is that a lot of the world does not deserve true democracy because THEY are immature to handle it, as is sadly, I feel my own country is moving to also. Limited democracies and freedoms are the future, get used to it.
Josh, I'm Everywhere in the world, USA/Florida
"Japan nuke up", As an American, it's sad to me that most of my fellow citizens think violence is the only alternative. Just read Chuck's comments. This is typical of people who are led to believe that a bible in one hand and a machine gun in the other is doing the work of god or something perverted like that.
Using Chuck's mentality, perhaps that's why we find Iran supposedly wanting to build a nuclear weapon if you are to believe the neocon war and intelligence machine, of course look where that got us in Iraq. unless it was really a move to control the oil there. hmmm.....
Bush and his administration have mishandled so much, talk about an incompetent group of people in a position which requires competence.
Todd, Wichita, KS
In response to 'chuck' from Texas. One should be better informed before making blanket statements. The whole world wants peace and felt that Iraq should solve its own problems. America wants only to control the oilfields of the Middle East, at any expense. What Hussein did was nothing compared to what has been done to the Iraqi people since the unlawful invasion by American forces. Don't forget that there were no weapons of mass destruction, and that Iran also is not in possession of them. America created terrorism and can peacefully end it at any moment simply by laying down its arms.
tatiana, Moscow, Russia
The Japanese government officials are merely joining the growing chorus of dissent against the most arrogant of US presidents, George W. Bush. That dissent is coming from around the world and from within the USA too. The Japanese, along with so many others, have perceived that Al Qaeda has manipulated America all along into putting Americans closer to them so that they can be more easily killed, at less expense, but in a way that inflames Muslims nad results in more recruits to their terrorist cause. Sadly, Al Qaeda seems to twist America around its little finger, but America is too blind to realize it, as it is too busy boasting and blustering. Go the Japanese for standing alongside other perceptive people for figuring out America's policies for what they are -- utter failures!

If Angola decides to bomb the US fleet, they should expect to be "murdered" and "fire bombed" also. It's called "war".
The whole world wanted regime change in Iraq, including Iraq, and this is the thanks we get.
Japan should nuke up and take care of Korea if they don't like our methods.
chuck, Woodville, Tx
No wonder the Jap DM is upset -- Bush SCREWED them royally with his mishandling of N. Korea. Iraq= no WMD -- invade them. DPRK doesn't have oil, so call call them names and let them explode a nuke on Japan's doorstep. This Administration's incompetence knows no bounds. I feel safer already.
Boris, Toy, NY,
Why on earth would the Japanese care one way or the other about the U.S. in Iraq? Why is it any concern of theirs one way or the other?
It is a tremendous display befuddled incompetence that they would risk the friendship of their greatest and most powerful ally over something in which they have utterly no interest. It is like threatening to divorce your wife because it was too windy in Borneo last Tuesday.
Joe, Santa Barbara, CA
Sometime after GW Bush is no longer president, it will be found that WMD's were moved to Syria from Iraq and it will be said that hmmmmm "W" was right after all.

Paul Carroll, La Crescenta, Ca, USA
I had to laugh when I read that you regard the US ad "Japans greatest friend and ally." The nation that bombed Japan with incendiary weapons and two atomic bombs murdering 100s of thousands of civilians is : 'Japans greatest friend and ally' What a Joke! The US has been occupying Japan since WW2 and the Japanese can't wait to get rid of them.
Xelema, Luanda, Angola
The UN could not find the weapons again because they supervised their destruction.
Yes we are still finding weapons today, a total of about 300 shells from 15 to 20 years old, no longer active, from a stock of 10's of thousands.
Yes, they still COULD be hidden. Hard to argue with logic like that, except that Bush's own weapon investigators have stated that there were no weapons of mass destruction. These Bush appointees have finished their mission and further organized searchers have been abandoned.

The ultra right wing is still trying to say that there were WMD in Iraq. It is rather sad. They just do not seem to be able to accept reality.

It seems Abe's government is pulling a page from the European playbook: If the people hate your government, blame America.
China and South Korea are mad at them over their denial of history; North Korea kidnaps their citizens, shoots missiles over their island and now has nukes. But, they are mad at America.
With or without WMDs, Saddam Hussein was a threat and a humanitarian nightmare. After 12 years, the rest of the world didn't come up with a better solution. If they don't like the ultimate result, they should have been part of a better solution. Perhaps both Japan and Europe should consider that equation when thinking of Iran.

It is one thing to denounce the tenative agreement for the shutting
down of the North Korean reactor for fuel and food, it's another thing
to actually talk of it specifics. The President's spokesman said
that it was performance based. To get the rewards, N. Korea must
first shut down the reactor. I don't hear any specifics except for denunciation from the other side. I'm not saying that it'll work, but
for those of us who want to judge on the merits of the case, it
would be interesting to hear something other than what we've had
so far. And the press should be asking appropriate questions.
Mark Sethre, San Jose, CA
I agree with the Japanese cabinet ministers that the "New" agreement with North Korea looks suspiciously like the old ones and is a betrayal of some sorts as well.
In the new world order that exists(ie. an emerging militarized China) we can ill afford to isolate such a stategic ally as Japan. In fact if you want to send a cold shiver down the spines of both China and North Korea we should support a revitalized Japanese military and encourage them to be a n even more active participant in the events going on around their country and world.

Another Monday morning quarterback, Mr Kyu-ma is. How many times must we rehash this? The vast majority of governments accepted the intelligence that Iraq was pursuing WMD's, you can go back and read it anytime. But now that it turned out to be wrong, everyone knew it all along. Yeah, right. So what would Kyu-ma have us do now?
With allies like these, maybe we should let North Korea shoot missiles over Japan all day long. Let them sort Kim out themselves, if we're such scum.

This is whole piece is unsubstantiated anti-americanism. The US stood by Japan in its moment of terror, unlike most European countries, and stood down the N. Korean dictator. The only disagreement was of the kind that keeps diplomats employed. Do we delist NK as a terrorist state or do we start to delist NK as a terrorist state. When NK was firing off missles, we were right there providing the technology to shoot them down. Not you.
George Brown, Bradenton, Florida
Briefly,in the 90's, the UN, not the US, found WMD's in Iraq. Then they had to leave.
When they came back they cound not find any of the weapons they previously seen.. It does not mean that there were never any. They could be still hidden- given the history of Iraq hiding things. We are still finding buried weapons today.

Cheney's cool, if not hostile reception in Japan is just one symptom of an administration that is viewed with almost universal suspicion and distrust around the world. The Bush/Cheney legacy will be one of: how to strengthen your true enemies in unprecedented ways, while weakening yourself. Their vendetta driven obsession with Saddam Hussein, combined with greed for oil and blinkered naivete have resulted in the worst strategic blunder in US history. It is an excellent study in how foolish a delusion it is when men think themselves to be "boss of the world."
The world can see it clearly and now most Americans can too. Only the most fervent of neo-fascist idealogues stay loyal to "the course." This is the same crowd who believe that Vietnam was "lost on the home front." Their ego neurosis precludes them from being able to admit to mistake. All that has gone wrong has been someone else's fault. They are small-minded men holding too much power which now overwhelms them. Good riddance.

It amazes me that despite the damage the US President has done to his country's reputation accross the whole world, people still post comments supporting him in foreign papers.
For a country that has proved that democracy is the superior form of governance, its shocking that so little is made of the fact that the majority of the worlds population regard them as bullies and war-mongers.

( try saying that to Putin or Chavez- good luck.) Leadership is when you have to make hard decisions that someone MUST and no one Likes. Its not arrogance its standing up for what you believe in. I don't see you saying that about the terrorists "arrogance " killing of innocent. people

What matter is action! But can you honestly say that it is justifiable? The US didn't go into war for the reasons that you stated, they went into war for the comodity that they could exploit. Moral comes into the frame while in the middle of all these thousand of young men and women gave up their life not for our safety but for the already wealthy old men!
kudaku, LONDON, UK
It's about time other major forces speak out against what the Bush gang is doing in Iraq before we let them get carried away in Iran. The Uk is pulling out troups. What a message of good. Let Japan give Cheney an earfull. I just hope they speak loud as both Bush and Cheney are hard of hearing.
Tom, brighton, UK
Japan has it right. US has it wrong. End of story.
kbs, los angeles,
It would certainly appear that Fumio Kyu-ma was nolt impressed with the
1992 Defense Policy Review that Cheney and Wolfowitz if Arabia
spawned. No one is going to believe anything Bush, Rice , Cheney or
Gates tells them anyway. They have been caught in too many documented lies, to date.
lyleblog, Phoenix, AZ
Yikes, many of you Americans are truly arrogant and foolish. You are on the fast track to not have one friend in the world. You lost me when you picked Bush the second time. You are in a cult and it's called America.
From a Canadian who used to care about you.
John , Edmonton, Canada
This is all very very orchestrated.
The US gov't has pushed the Japanese gov't to re-arm and change their pacifist constitution. The average Tanaka has a knee-jerk reaction to this and doesn't want a strong military. So, the elections are rigged to put a nationalist (Abe) in as PM and then, mysteriously, his cabinet members are breaking ranks and criticising the US concerning military affairs?!
Not just is this absurd to think of as Abe losing control, it is naive.
The ultimate goal is to get the public to line up with the gov't nationalists and then Japan can go about re-arming and politely tell the US to get off their bases. It has already happened and most people are not aware that the US military will move from Okinawa Japan to Guam.
It is blatantly clear what is happening if you can see the bigger picture.
Mickey Mantle, Tokyo, Japan
America is not perfect but as a American we have a vote and if this war is wrong let us vote in who we believe can do the better job, rather than be cruel and I dont get the european view on America when they are in trouble (The Euros) call us for help and we do, We are not better than the rest of the world we have our faults so do you, I love my country and im proud of our troops, my Grandfather and Uncle fought in WW2, one in Pearl Harbor a survivor of Dec 7th, the other chasing Germans out of Italy with Gen Patton.Heroes are not taught they are born God Bless all of us who stand for God and Israel, Iraq one day will be better off without the violence but doing nothing to stop it would be cowardly.
jeff, anaheim, usa/california
it's funny how countries that speak their mind about our war for oil are "unfriendly". we get what we deserve, and don't forget China and Japan own us, literally over 3/4ths of us.
if you haven't heard iraqs oil fields are re-opened to western companies since 1972, right then the US declared best friend saddam a "terrorist". now that bush/dick & the thieves have what they want you will see our troops leaving very very soon...left will be the private forces to guard the oil fields. thanks all you morons for supporting bushy, it only cost thousands of american lives and billions and billions of taxpayer money to get the oil fields...
to the Fox news fact checker, it was not a majority of Dems that voted for the fictitious evidence. go read the votes before you post tony snow crap. also could you explain why bush told blair that england pulling half of their troops from iraq by the end of the year is a sign of "success"...yet, we sending 21,000+ because things are out of control...
david, chicago, il
You know the difference between the US and the rest of the world? The US ends up cleaning up the messes left behind emperial Europeans. England, for as close as we are to them, left the Middle East and Indian Ocean a totally screwed up region. We are still cleaning up after all of the country building done by our parent.
And France wag their fingers at the US, even after we end up making a huge mistake to try to clean up the mess they created in South East Asia.
The big difference - we are responsible. If not now when does someone do something about it the situation created in the early 1900s? If the US pulls out now to save a couple more lives, how many more lives is it going to cost when we have no choice?
You're all welcome. We will continue to pour billions into the UN and all of the nations that were raped by Europe, The next time war breaks out, we'll be there to help. Go ahead, sit back with your noses in the air and wag your fingers at us. Don't worry, we can take it.
Ricky Clinch, Minneapolis , MN
I must live in a different planet? does anyone want to stop the killing? America is not perfect BUT we care most of us average hard working american loving people, I am truly shocked to see humans from UK and Aussies, be so cruel towards America I know you DONT represent all of your respectful countries, many europeans remember the sacrafices America made there, including my Grandfather i never knew that was lost in D-day, many of you not from America come here for a better life, seems odd that you would be so mean, My friends rest to sure esp Austrilla and the UK if you are ever in trouble Americans like myself will be there to help you, just like we did before no NEW WORLD ORDER!!! just God loving Americans who care is needed, We vote here and if the next administration can do better, great, Please dont take it that we are arrogant we are not perfect but we are free!!! God Bless you all, we do love you guys Cheers and Good Day Mate best wishes a Average American Dad/Husband/Son/Brother/Patriot
jeff, anaheim, usa/california
It is unfortunate that the world and the American mainstream media suffers from amnesia. The NYT did not think Hitler was a threat either. What will it take? Another invasion of Europe, this time by terrorist states to wake them up. Then they will all be begging for our help. Deep inside it is just collective jealousy...the signs may read "Yankee go home", but if you listen carefully, you will hear them also whispering "and please take me with you!".
Joe Hdz, Hillsborough, NJ, USA
From another post: "Never forget, for liberals history started yesterday."
Then how do you explain the fact that everything the liberals said about not going to Iraq because it would be a mistake coming true? Us "liberals" predicted this mess would happen. And no, Hillary Clinton is not a liberal.
Tim, Los Angeles,
considering Japan is our largest creditor I just hope for all your sakes they don't start voting with their pocketbooks.
Roger, portland, oregon
Hey JAPAN! Where's your hearts and minds after all that
we Americans have done for you? I suppose you would sit on
your BUTTS after you were attacked by terrorists?
Americans have died by the hundreds of thousands to give
countries freedoms. Your prosperity is due in large part to what
Americans have done for you.
What's the matter with you, JAPAN? Where's our friend in our
time of need?
Ace, Idaho,
patrick, you've got a valid point. The US is getting it from all sides, including from fellow Americans. Perhaps it is time to return all of our troops from Europe, Asia, Africa and the Middle East. I wonder what would happen? I think the world would give each other hugs and kisses..eternal peace everywhere!
GI Joe, san diego, ca
Iraq- Bush's folly and America's worst move ever. And for what? Over 600,000 Iraqis killed - 6-10,000 Americans dead, Iraq in ruins, and a deficit last year of over four trillion dollars. And Iraq had nothing to do whatsoever with 911.
America's name has been trashed worldwide.
No, I'm not a liberal- just a Republican conservative who can see the awful truth.
Dave, Chicago, Illinois
As someone who has lived in Japan, the UK and the US, I must say that what everyone tends to believe outside the US is colored by the media coverage in those places. And the media coverage outside the US rarely presents any view other than an anti-American one (or that of the NYT, which is the same thing), so of course everyone thinks the US is doing the wrong thing because to these people, the US is ALWAYS doing the wrong thing. The rest of the world needs to wake up and realize that the US is carrying your water and you should be thanking Bush, not bashing him.
Mark Fouty, Edmonds,
Well said David from Dallas. People seem to so easily forget history and remember that diplomatic process's that are violated must be dealt with. If not, we would have bullies like North Korean and Iran's leaders running a muck in the world, causing death by terrorism forever. People who don't face the facts, and take responsibility for their actions than there would be no need for laws, regulations, or diplomacy. (In that case, let's just not be civil human's, and let me go blow up my job and kill everyone because they asked me to work) There has to be someone in the world willing to step up to the plate and tell that out of control 2 year old (middle east) to sit down, and behave yourself. I agree that the Bush administration's ways of execution have not been perfect, however when there is another typhoon or major world disaster, guess who will get the phone call for money, help or aid? Hasn't anyone heard of the phrase, don't bite the hand that feeds you?
Michael, Madison, WI
Never forget, for liberals history started yesterday. Laughed out loud (really) at David's post. Very funny.
Marc, Mpls, MN
Bush has been dead wrong and bad for America since day one and the IRAQ fiasco is just another example of special interest republicans leading this country down the path of self-will run-riot self-destruction. If we have an ally left after Bush leaves office it will be a miracle and because a democrat is elective to lead not govern this country back to sanity.
Robert Kilgore, Los Angeles, CA
I see the Japanese comments on our foreign policy also accurately reflects our citizens attitudes towards the rest of the world as well. Grow up and realize that this planet is a lot smaller than it was 60 years ago.
Patrick, palo alto, california, us
Take this as another indication of how much power the Bushies have squandered since 9-11. When even the docile Japanese start refusing to pretend that an American Vice-President deserves respect, you know you've got trouble. And if you don't know it, like the Boy Emperor in his bubble, then you've got even more trouble.
I sure hope you American folks find some decent leadership soon.
A DeWit, Tokyo, Japan
Is it a co incidence that all the comments so far have come from the USA (Uninformed Scumbags of America)? From Bush believers? Are they all Evangelical Christians? If so, what sort of god do you go to church to pray to on Sundays?
Is it a god that preaches destuction, rape and slaughter to anyone that does not bow down to American interests?
Your time has come to an end, George W Bush and his cohorts have run their course so accept the inevitable and get ready for THE new world order - one that does NOT include your arrogant species.
Cikku, Sydney, Australia
to David in Dallas,
Stop it with the facts. We don't like facts. Be quiet and give me a hug.
tony, allen park, mi
David, I agree. In fact, if 9/11 had happened in 1993 when Clinton was president, all the Dem's would be backing him and it would be the Republicans criticizing the handling of the war. I was listening to the Matt Drudge Radio Show 3 weeks ago Sunday and heard a 5 minute montage of why it is important to remove Saddam Hussein from power and each of the politicians from that sound bite was a Democrat, i.e. Bill Clinton, Ted Kennedy, Joe Biden.
Frankly, I'm tired the partisan politics and with the exception of a select few, i think nobody has a problem with taking out Saddam, but rather everyone is upset with the poor post war planning by the Bush administration. However, if we pull out now it will be a big mistake. Has everyone forgotten what happened in the killing fields in Cambodia? 600,000+ died after the U.S. military pulled out of Viet Nam. By the way that war was started by a democrat so you libs get of your high horse! History teaches that we learn nothing from history. If we pull out of Iraq because the terrorists were too tuff, shame on us.
Bruce, Banning, CA
Iraq exit strategy and procedure:
1) Get the hell out 2) Stay the hell out
Rationale: Nothing bad will happen that isn't either already
happening or will happen anyway.
Edmund Klein, Fallbrook, California
keep it up, now you will begin talkin about Irans so called WMD and blah blah... you guys are putting your tax dollars to great use! a few hundred billion more.. and the rest of the world is gonna laugh when america collapses! good job!
Bob Cohen, London, UK
Let's hope every country in the world including our own right here in the United States of America makes Bush and Cheney uncomfortable except for Paraguay.
Winston, London,
David from Dallas said it all....have you seen the before and after of Hillary Clinton? She had SOLID CONVICTION that Saddam needed to be removed. Now she regrets it. If all was said and done within a year of the Iraq LIBERATION she would be proud of her vote. It is difficult work in Iraq so she and the rest of the wussy Americans want to run. You wanna see cocky, childish and betrayal....vote for her.
Ben, Melbourne, FL
We need to pull our military forces out of Japan. Let them defend themselves from N. Korea, China and Russia. Then let's see how well they do when they don't have US military power to back them up.
Patrick Curry, Irvine, CA, USA
Childish? Cocky? This, coming from the Japanese? Tell that to the people of Indo-China, who suffered from these horrible people in the 30's and 40's.
Bart Swinto, Mandeville, Louisiana
Cut ALL foreign assistance, military and otherwise.
If 700+ foreign military installations isn't empire, what is?!?
William Gerald, Clifton, NJ
I don't believe anybody any more.
The whole thing is so rediculous.
redic ulous, somterville, usa
Regarding WMD... I'm more concerned by the fact that despite having no WMDs, nobody in the world knew that before the invasion. Not the UN, not the Democrats, not Mdm. Secretary Albright or National Security Advisor cum Felon, Sandy Berger; and certainly not the Japanese. In eight years of Clinton the UN passed some ten resolutions and why? Yet after just eight months of Bush he was supposed to discern that the rest of the world had it wrong? We have Mdm. Senator Hillary stating all her reasons for the invasion of Iraq were based on her own intelligence and analysis. Oh yeah, but men lie to her, and she believes them. Let 'em eat sushi.
Tim, Big Tomato, CA
What incredible depths Bush and Cheney have taken our nation. I doubt that I will see a recovery in my lifetime.
Ron Gillespie, Kailua Kona,
There was no such thing a resolution to go to war in Iraq.
There was a resolution giving the president the authority/discresion to use force as a last resort. An important distinction when reviewing the history. If you care about the truth that is!
greg, toga,
If it were up to the Japanese the funds for the war in Iraq would be cut to t he bone very quickly. Cutting the funds for the war would not harm the troops in Iraq but it would cause havac for the war mongers in the administration The Japanese realize that the 737 military bases that the USA has all around the world is empire building, as does Russia and China.
EM Tkacik, Cressona , PA
Even long time partners will turn on you if you become irrational and unreliable. Cheney would have been better faking a medical emergency than trying to hide in Asia.
Frank, Tokyo,
Too bad for Dick in Tokyo. We've had gridlock here in Sydney with both Cunard Queen's in yesterday and will have chaos tomorrow when Dick arrives and the city is locked down. This time however the only crowds will be demonstrators, not wellwishers. Apart from John Howard, Dick's running out of friends.....
Steve
Steve Ballmer, Sydney, Australia
Yah, Saddam plays rope-a-dope with the weapons inspectors, fires at planes guarding the no-fly-zones, and everybody but Blair and Bush are bribed by Saddam from mony gained by the UN's Oil for Food and Guns for Saddam Program. No appearance of a smoking gun there...
Jeff, Moscow, Idaho
as a proud american & bush supporter, i franky don't give a hoot what a conquered former enemy country thinks about our foreign policy decisions. of course there have been mistakes, miiscalculations and mis-steps but we've tried to adapt and make the best of nasty situation. japan is inconsequential in the scheme of things and they probably know it and are simply still humiliated from their ww2 experiences. i'm sure cheney won't be losing much sleep over it either. how do the brits feel when germany criticizes blair's policies...are they too far gone and hate bush so much that they are gleeful at that> if so, god help us all...memories really are short.
trish, los angeles, california
My opinion? Say thank you for being a great ally for so many years, but due to differences outside our control, we will no longer be able to protect you against Korea. You see, we think they may have WMD's.....but can't be positive about it. So, good luck.
BTW, we think they named their first bomb "Godzilla".....whatever that may mean......
Jon, Humble, TX
This is evidence of a further breakdown in simple civility being upstages by partianship. While the Japanese as not quite as bad as the Democrats, the chilly reception is shortsighted to the point of being myoptic. How quickly the Japanese forget who their truest ally is...
ed, yorktown, Va
Everybody is crumbling before Mr. Cheney and his little boy, Georgie.
SURELY somebody slips Dick, and George, and the State Dept woman newspapers every now and then.
BUT, they don't usually read anything they don't like.
Tom, Atlanta, GA, USA
...whatever.
Elias Bracamonte, Riverside, ca
The majority of Democrats voted for the resolution to go to war and even made speeches about how Saddam had to go even if there were no WMDs. In case you all forget: There were 12 UN resolutions, years of inspectors being kicked out, corrupt oil-for-food program, an attempted assassination of an American President, an invasion of Kuwait, mass graves, nuclear program parts hidden in nuclear scientists back yard, no fly zone violations, post 9/11 mentality, etc. The truth is that Liberals just want world socialism based on relative morality, with the Super Friends Justice League (the UN) as the world government. The highest sin in their world is income inequity. The facts and truth don't matter.
David, Dallas, TX
Cocky, Childish and Betrayal. What more is there to say.
That says it all.
M Duke, Clovis, California
Time for Japan to get rid of their American training wheels. No more foreign based US military in unfriendly countries.
