Secret hearing for 9/11 suspect

WASHINGTON Khalid Muhammad, who is suspected of organising the September 11 attacks on New York, will face a secret hearing today.

He will be among 14 terrorist suspects to appear before a panel of three military officers, who will decide whether they should continue to be held at a prison in Guantanamo Bay. No defence lawyers or reporters will be present at the hearings.

Bryan Whitman, a spokesman for the Pentagon, said that the hearings were closed to prevent classified information from leaking. Human rights groups and former military lawyers said that the secrecy would cause more damage to US credibility over its treatment and prosecution of terror suspects.

Any decision to keep the suspects under detention is expected to lead to formal trials on terrorism charges. Other suspects include Abu Zubaydah, an alleged aide to Osama bin Laden. (AFP)
