WASHINGTON America’s top general was condemned after he described homosexual acts as “immoral” and comparable to adultery.
General Peter Pace, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told a newspaper that gay sex was like “sleeping with someone else’s wife” and that “homosexual acts . . . are immoral and we should not condone immoral acts”.
He was defending the Pentagon’s “don’t ask, don’t tell” policy, under which gays and lesbians may serve in the military only if they do not reveal their orientation or engage in homosexual activity.
This compromise was set in legislation introduced in 1993 by Bill Clinton, and his wife, Hillary Clinton, front-runner in the 2008 White House race, supports overturning it. General Pace issued a clarification saying that he had aired personal views based on his upbringing, and that he supported the present policy.

Military brass lies to the pentegon, the pentegon lies to the president and the president lies to the nation.
grumpybumpas, Houston, state of confusion.
In response to the first post, wow can you say Christian Preaching...I know people like you, missionaries who would rather see us starve than accept that our tribe is not, and never will be Christians.
They were ready to give aid if we converted.
Yeah, and I've heard all that "you're stereotyping because of one experience"...
And in response to Joe Walker....^ just like the stupid personal life (homosexuality) should be kept seperate from work, so should the general's "stupid" personal life (his Bible-obsession) away from his work...he was speaking on behalf of the Pentagon and its policy on Don't Ask, Don't tell...so Joe Walker from Midland, MI watch out for your logical fallacies
Joe, CapeTown,
We all have the right to a view and to choose the moral standards by which we live. The General may say these things but he should not impose them on us nor say something like this to the media and not expect anyone to be offended.
As one that he included in his opinion I was offended that not that he thought that, I am aware people hold that opinion but that he would air it to the media.
If we are to rule our country and our military by the bible and it's laws we can't pick and choose which ones we use, we live by them all or none, he cannot discriminate against homosexuals and then allow other things to pass.
He is allowed to say this because it is gay people he condemns, if it were anyone else, people of another religion or race then he would have faced a mass of arguments, instead it is allowed to pass. In what way is this fair?
Visitor, London,
Since the Bible, being the inspired word of God record's God's viewpoint on homosexual acts and condemns them as He does all types of sexual immorality, what has sinful and deprave humanity to argue with a righteous and just God who desires all men to repent and turn to His beloved Son, the Lord Jesus Christ, and be saved from the power of his sinful nature, and the wages of sin which is death. Let us, sinners, repent and depend upon God who through HIs Son, can give lovingly and willingly the grace and power to live godly and clean lives by His enabling.
Richfield A. Cudal, Th. M., West Palm Beach, Florida
Dear General Pace,
Thank you for your honesty and integrity. Do not let homosexuals intimidate your stance. The transparent legal backing the homosexual agenda has shall not stand in the face of God. And if there wasn't a problem with their activities, they would not need to compensate for them so strongly.
Curtis , Anchorage, Alaska
This is stupid. He is a human being like everyone else and has his own opinions and values. There is absolutely no reason to criticize a human being for simple speaking what they think. He thinks homosexuality is wrong, thats his view right or wrong. If you wanna be gay in the military then just do it and keep your stupid personal life separate from work like it should be then this crap wouldn't be a problem.
Joe Walker, Midland, MI
He's not paid to make moral judgements, but to defend US Citizens' rights. This includes homosexuals' rights to snog whomever they please.
Jenna, Macedon, NY
We are all born with predispositions, but in the final analysis, as adults we all do what we want based on our values of right and wrong. I would never judge a homosexual; I cannot begin to imagine what it would have been like to be born with homosexual tendencies. I thank God that I wasnt
I would like to remind all Christians (yes I am one) to judge themselves first. If you are sleeping with your neighbours spouse, your unmarried partner or masturbate, according to the bible these are all acts of sexual immorality. I have my own heterosexual struggles, and do not lay claim to a righteousness of my own. The real issue with humanity is that most of us do what we enjoy, and belief in a God who insists we live for him is a great inconvenience.
Christianity offers escape to those who believe in God and are conscious of their inability to live a morally upright life. Lets not forget the central message is one of Gods love and redemptive work for men irrespective of sexual persuasion
TIM, LONDON, UK
Let people live their lives. What is wrong with this world! An individuals sexual preference is up to them. What is the need in penalising them for it? You can't help who you are attracted to. That is immoral.
J, Leicester, UK
Thank God there is at least ONE person in the military who knows that homosexuality is not only immoral...it's an abomination according to the Bible which most Christians pretend to believe in.
It's time to wake up and stand up against the satanic forces of evil who are trying to convince us that this perverse behavior is normal. Not a chance!
Grant Thomas, Brookhaven, NE
Alexander the Great had homosexual tendencies and this certainly didn't hamper his military campaign.
david, Leeds, UK
According to the general, indiscriminate killing of humans by using WMDs is ok, but what two loving people do in private, is immoral. God bless America.
Vinay Mehra, Purley, Surrey
In response to the another Nashville writer who claims that we live in a country "supposedly founded on God" I respectfully disagree.
The United States was founded on imperialism and a misinterpretation of manifest destiny. This country was populated by several sovereign nations long before the European set foot on its shores.
I Corinthians 6 may indeed criticize homosexuality, but Matthew 7:1 also cautions Christians to "judge not, let ye be judged."
Personally, I am not a Christian and do not see the big deal. If you believe in Jesus, the follow his teachings and leave the rest of us alone. We are all doing the best we can in this journey of life. We all want the world to be a better place and we are all experiencing our own, individual relationship with that which is referred to as "God".
Landry, Nashville, TN
It seems incredibly naive to continue to believe or infer that the people who oppose or would argue against General Pace's views regarding homosexuality are either atheists or just ignorant of the facts. Well here are some facts. There are millions of people who are not gay and who would describe themselves as devoutly religious or spiritual who oppose views suchas that one expressed by our esteemed General Pace. As a lesbian, and a citizen, and a mother, and a lifetime partner I find it unfortunate that the commander of our military is so removed from the truth. And the truth is really quite simple. People are born lefthanded. People are born with freckles. People are born gay. What will it take for the naysayers and people who purport to understand biblical passages (that have been interpreted by many to justify their hatred of gays and lesbians) - for them to truly "get it". Science, I believe, is on it's way to proving that being gay is just part of our genome. Thank God
Tammy del Sol, Dauphin, PA, United States
Isn't it ironic that the General in question would never have the courage to say he felt a particular religion or race was immoral, yet it's fine to say that he thinks homosexual acts are? If that's his opinion then fine, but with the position he holds he should have kept it to himself. Just a thought...why is it that the same people who attack homosexualty by sayings it's against Christianity, are also the ones who seem to pick and choose which parts of that rligion to follow? I mean, I sure slavery etc was mentioned in the Bible somewhere...
Chloe, cambs, england
People are entitled to have their own personal, bigoted, and hateful beliefs. However out of respect to their fellow citizens they should refrain from acting on those personal beliefs. No one is telling these people they have to change their views on homosexuality. Homosexuals are only trying to live their own healthy and happy life. They are not asking for people like the General to understand them, or march in a gay pride parade but they do feel it is important to let them live their own lives freely. Is that so hard to accept?
Brian, Washington, DC
Regardless whether I agree with the general, I think that he should not express his personal opinion about morality being perceived as a government official.
Paul, Miami, USA
If my rear was stuck in combat, I only want to focus on staying alive and whether or not the person next to me can do their job so that we can both walk away from it. In short, I don't care what you do in bed, DO YOUR JOB!! Your personal life should not affect your job and if it does, you'll get fired, military or civilian.
Natalie, Jacksonville, USA/FL
What hasn't been stated is that the general should not have made those comments as he was representing the administration and military as the confirmed senior military person in the country. That holds for being in or out of uniform. If I said something like that in a public forum such as a newspaper, while I was in the service, I'd be charged and likely convicted.
Bob, Salisbury, MD
I absolutely do not believe in violence or hatred to people who say they're gay and perform gay acts, but I'm with the General. It's time to stop forcing those of us who believe gay sex is perverted to pretend it's not. The Bible is clear on this and many of us in this country base our existence on what we've been taught in the Bible. I believe the Bible tells me to love all people, but not their sins. (Nor do I love my own sins and wouldn't ask you too, either!) Gay people don't want to accept that the Bible is something we feel we are required by our God to follow. Not pick and choose the parts that fit a group's need for "permission" to conduct sinful acts. If you're going to have sex with same-sex partners, that's certainly your prerogative, but do not expect those of us who believe God had a different plan for the human race to renounce our beliefs to accommodate your need to sin. That's your situation that you've created for yourself and you need to deal with
Mary, st. louis, missouri
So when one man puts his penis into another man's mouth or anus, is there some new standard that we are all suppose to submit to that says that this is a moral act? What makes it moral? What or where is that standard? And why is it wrong for this general to say that he believes it is immoral when it is fine for another to say that it isn't?
James Santana, Santa Rosa, California
If iit is possible to say that gay acts are immoral but gays are not, then I can say that Christian acts are immoral but Christians are not. THAT IS JUST RIDICULOUS.
We all know they are! Ha ha.
But really, this religion stuff is so stupid it is humorous, let alone arrogant, uninformed, biased, inappropriate, archaic, divisive, stifling, esoteric, zenophobic, prejudging, hisorically and scientifically inaccurate, comforting and frightening, and finally and most important, but least understood, used as a tool by those in power to maintain their power.
intelligent non-theist, Odessa , NY
the new testement saying of jesus is do not judge lest you be judged and in the measure you meet out the same will be measured. yet the early teaching of the church clearly tells us to judge what is the good. so lets stop spining what jesus said. in the above quote judge not lest you be judged jesus is talking about makeing a eternal judgement on another soul, not judging what is good. General Peter Pace, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff gave a tempered and bibically mesured statement. i applaude his courage. and conviction.
paul zerovnik, lancaster, ohio
Jason, how in the world can you justify your own blatant prejucide? "I honestly think gay people don't have a conscience"??? On what basis do you reach such a conclusion? All they are doing is telling the General, "You are wrong about us. We are no more immoral than anyone else in the world; our sexual orientation, in itself, has nothing to do with our morality. Please apologize."
Jason, would you say women or handicapped persons or African-Americans or men or members of any other group have no conscience when they defend themselves against bigotry? That is exactly what the gay community is doing, yet you issue a blanket statement saying that gay persons have no conscience. Such a statement is dehumanizing to both you and those you accuse; it's unworthy of any thoughtful person.
Joanne , Hannibal , Missouri
You gays are overindulging in fantasy if you think that you are all born homosexual. You, and I, are born holding various degrees of male/female characteristics in our genes. This, the varying levels, is what causes efeminity in some males, or masculinity in some female (birth sex as defined by genitals). Following that "born with" tendency goes natural attraction goes experimentation goes preference. Not always, of course, sometimes a hetero child plays with a like child, and they discover orgasm, it is of course very pleasing, and they decide then to become attracted to that what gives pleasure. Their confidence builds with that gender based on early success, and so it goes.
I wholeheartedly agree with the UCMJ which forms the General's argument that there is no place for gay behavior in the military.
Greg Bruder, Coldwater, Mi
If the US spent less time trying to be politically correct and just do their function in life, everyone would be better off. It seems like minorities, immigrants and those with less than majority support expect everyone else to consider them and change society to revolve around them. I'm tired of pushing "1" to get instructions in English in the United States. I'm tired of being asked if I am from Latin descent. I'm an American and that should be all that matters. Americans speak English or need to learn it instead of spending my tax dollars on those who refuse to become American. Other free countries expect their residents to learn the language, laws, customs, and expectations of that country instead of modifying standards trying not to offend the few yet inconveniencing many. Plan to live here? Live with the standards and the accompanying opinions!
Mikel, Lutz, FL
We truly need to get our military back to Biblical teachings. I propose we start: 1. Forbidding our soldiers to eat pork, shellfish, or other unclean foods.. 2. Making sure that any children of military families are stoned to death if they are disobedient. 3. If any military personnel buys a male slave, he must set him free after six years. 4. If any military personnel buys a female slave, and she does not please him, he should be absolutely forbidden to sell her to foreigners. 5. Adulterous military personnel should be put to death. 6. Oh yes, and anyone who works on the sabbath needs to be killed too.
Once we do this, we can get back to a proper moral military as the bible has commanded!
David, Murfreesboro, Tennessee
Would you be celebate if somebody told you that heterosexual activities were immoral, James from Virginia?
Thought not.
It's easy to be self-righteous and preach about something that doesn't apply to you. How I wish there was a little pill that would turn people homosexual for a month or so (and a little pill that would give men PMT so they could experience what it's like would be good too, but that aside ;)).
People who are homosexual feel exactly the same way as heteros do when they fall in love. There's nothing pervy about it.
Starling, Lancaster,
Since when is loving someone immoral?
Michael Dale, New York, NY
All these opinions,,, This is what matters, Leviticus 18. Can you read all 30 verses, paying close attention to verse 22? I use the trusted King James Version.
Many comments above said let God judge,,, He has! Read it and learn.

To Steve Sheffield I know that gay people do not choose their sexuality, because I am a gay person which I thought I made clear in my post. I also know many other gay people and have discussed their sexuality with them. I am also a researcher and have interviewed many people about their sexual behaviour. I know that homosexuality is so stigmatised that gay and Lesbian people deny their sexuality and go through real turmoil and self analysis. Ask yourself given the nasty bigoted comments on this post denigrating homosexual people as abnormal or perverted why anyone would choose to be homosexual. I didn't choose my sexual orientation but I did choose to stop feeling bad about it, I chose to enjoy my natural inclination and enjoy the sex and relationships I have with other men. I chose to recognise that I am as valuable and moral as anyone else. If there is one absoloute truth I know it is that love between men and between women is a good, natural and moral thing.
David Reid, London, UK
Immoral? What about dropping cluster bombs, depleted uranium and napalm on other peoples children?
jackboots, seattle,
Excuse me , we live in America, which was and is still founded upon principles of God. One nation, under God, and gay and lesbian acts are immoral and I hope fully prosecuted as any immoral acts in the military. It is offensive for christians when others tell us how we should change God's laws for mans.Yet, we have the right to allow personal choice as long as it does not affect our free choices. In our military, men and women take showers publicly and are put in positions where the normal citizen is not under. I know any heterosexual man would not like to be thought of as looked upon by a gay man while he is showering or dressing. That is taking away from their privacy also. The don't ask , don't tell policy is the best answer. If your in the shower, you don't want to "know" that a gay guy is looking at you so you don't ask and they don't tell. Please, gays and lesbians, be respectful of heterosexuals rights to disagree with you and accept that we do believe it is immoral.
Lynn, Atlanta, Georgia
Interesting to note that the most homophobic comments posted are from the hick states of the US.
As an Englishman in NY I have long noted the relationship between tolerance and distance from NY. The further you go into Hicksville the more Christian Right they get. These people are no less gay per 1000 of population, just less well educated.
Crispin, NY, USA
Amen to that, Jason.
When I fell in love with someone "of the wrong sex", I never realised my son would be refused at good schools, for instance, or that people I'd known for years would stop talking to me.
Starling, Lancaster,
Homosexuality is found in all species of nature, including human beings. It is not a choice. It is a product of nature! Believe it or not, there is an abundance of sexual variety to be found in nature. Get educated!
Tom Higgins, Chicago, IL
General Pace is absolutely on target. It would be comparable to commtting adultery, and immoral above all else. What concerns me is the "look the other way policy". That policy in itself provides shelter for the acts of homosexuality in the military. Also, those that desire to practice that lifestyle seem bent on persuading others to embrace and accept it by compromising their moral beliefs. General Pace, stand fast , dont be persuaded by some of the public opinion, and in this case thank God its very few...and theirs many more that are on your side Sir.
Rick Ellis, South Florida, USA Florida
Who defines morals? Your God? Their God? Biblical fictions? Pontificating Peter? If Peter Pace wishes to remove acts he defines as immoral from the military then he needs to take a hard look at the military lifestyle in its totality.
I have lived in a number of military communities where spousal and child abuse, violence, drunkeness, infidelity and other commonly accepted acts of immoral behavior are rampant. These are situations that, I hope, are not the norm. But, they are far too frequent to be dismissed. (Which they are by the the commanders I have observed.)
Peter's homophobic comments have no place in the discourse of President Bush's war in Iraq. How many people have died in Bush's acts of retribution for 9/11? Two, three, four, ten times those killed in the towers? This is not a war on homosexuals--or even a war on terror--it is our fight against an administration and military-industrial complex that has endagered our safety, security and freedom far more than any gay has!
TD, Bedford, VA
i think you all just need to let it go if he said it then he said it that is his view and has nothing to do with his position in the government
matt , yuma,
I am sick and tired of people who try to impose their 'moralities' on others. Let's all live up to our own morals and let God do the judgement.
Remember that in the past, we Christians were also considered immoral by others. Lets not shove our religion down the throats of others.
Connie, Apex, N.C.
General Peter Pace states that " ...gay sex is like, sleeping with someone elses wife " and that homosexual acts . . . are immoral and we should not condone immoral acts. Now the first statement would only be true if there was same sex marrige and someone who was either gay or otherwise had sex with someone elses partner. The only other way itr would be true is if a married man or woman who was deep in the closet had a homosexual affair. Since same sex marrige is very rare in this country and not yet universal throughout the country, I suspect that he was refering to the latter. My question then would be why is this concern so prominent on his mind ? Is he or does he know friends that are in the closet ? As fo the innate question of morality, morality always begs the question ," who or what is harmed ". Other then the case of infidelity I mentioned above, which applies to streight people also the answer is no one. Biblical moral authority? It also sanctions slavery, enough said
Joseph Pena, Jersey City, New Jersey / USA
To Lawrence, Nashville, USA/TN, what you forgot to add to the comment ," Even our money says "in God we trust"., was the word now. The motto " In God We Trust " has been on our money after Congress passed legislation to that effect on April 22,
1864. Check it out at http://www.treas.gov/education/fact-sheets/currency/in-god-we-trust.html
Beofre that the currency had a much more appropriate motto for a secular Democracy such as ours that stated. " Mind Your Business ". A motto that I strongly encourage the bible thumpers to take up. To use the Bible as a moral authority on has to raise an eyebrow when one considers that the very same Bible also sanctions slavery,Old Testament Leviticus, 25/44, Leviticus, 25/45, Leviticus, 25/46, Exodus, 21/2, Exodus, 21/3, Exodus, 21/4, Exodus, 21/5, Exodus, 21/6, New Testament Timothy 1, 6/1, Titus, 2/9, Titus, 2/10, Ephesians, 6/5, Ephesians, 6/6, Peter 1, 2/18. You show gross shallowness in the understanding of history, religion, & liberty.
Joseph Pena, Jersey City, New Jersey / USA
While it is true that we Americans do have the right to free speach, and General Pace has the right to speak on any subject matter that he feels confident in discussing. However, General Pace, as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs is speaking from the office, where there is no room for anything but what his office is responsible for. He should choose his words a little more wisely. This is his personal opinion, and not that of the Joint Chiefs or for teh US government for that matter.
Mark, Haverhill, MA
The title of this article is misleading. The general did not say "gays" are immoral. As the first line of this article correctly states, General Pace said that homosexual *acts* are immoral. And yes, he does have a right to state his opinion. To recognize an activity as immoral is not the same thing as hating the person who engages in that activity. After all, I recognize that I have done things that are immoral; that does not require me to hate myself.
Here is an example of speech that might correctly be described as hateful: "these so-called Christians are either ignorant, stupid, hypocritical, or just plain old bigoted".
Jim, Manassas, Virginia
To Mary, St. Louis, Missouri, who said, "It's time to stop forcing those of us who believe gay sex is perverted to pretend it's not. " Where did you get that anyone is trying to force you to believe that ,"gay sex is not perverted to pretend it's not." ? That is your perogative and,in my opinion, your problem entirely. All that is asked is that we are all granted the same courtesey , that allows me to disagree and allows all to lead their personal lives as they wish. If gay people would consider a streight lifestyle , " perverted and refused to pretend that it was not." , that would also be their perogative and their problem as well, in my opinion. No one is asking you to renounce any belief. All that is asked is that you don't try to impose your belief on those who don't agree with you through the legal system. What you believe is your choice and your problem . What you legislate is all our problem.
Joseph Pena, Jersey City, New Jersey / USA
How ironic that a war monger has the nerve to judge someone elses morals.
Scott, Indianapolis, IN
Oh no! This poor Christian man is being crucified for expressing his opinion!!!
Whatever. Please people, check your persecution complex at the door.
The General has the right to say what he wants and I have the right to disagree. In my world, morality is between a person and their interpretation of God -- it's none of my business.
I'm straight and don't really care what the General thinks about gays. I do however, think that God would be embarrassed to be associated with that sort of closed-minded opinion.
And yes, one wonders if he shouldn't spend more time ensuring the safety of the troops and less criticizing the minority whose conduct is offensive to him. What are we paying this guy for anyway?
Landry, Nashville, TN
To Lucy, Bronx, NY, USA who stated, " One's lifestyle is no ones business and it should not be flaunted. There are still those who are against such an immoral lifestyle and it should not be shoved down ones throat. " Why is it immoral? Morality begs the question ," Who or what does it harm? " The answer to that question is clearly no one. At least no more then streight people "flaunteding their lifestyle in public, and in the face of gay people" As for people who think it is immoral, so what? Who cares? I mean why should I care about your personal morality if you don't have the common decency to care for other peoples personal morality? Personal morality, other then the shared morality that scupulous people all personally share that addresses the quewstion of " Who or what is harmed?",is like tastes in food and clothes. We choose it because it suits us personally, but have no right to impose it on others.
Joseph Pena, Jersey City, New Jersey / USA
Gen. Pace didn't say gay sex was like adultery, he simply said they are both immoral. Much like murder could be said to be immoral, but you can't equate it to adultery. This article is typical biased wordplay to twist meanings around and try to confuse and elicit emotions from the unknowing reader. What the general said was his own personal opinions; what is the big deal when none of this would affect his work ethics? This is a non-issue, played up by gay activists jumping at every opportunity to play a show to the American media. Just let the man do his job! What he said was his own opinions, nothing more (it doesn't affect anyone other than needy people who need other people to tell them what they do is moral and "accepted").
Jon, Norwalk, CA
Everyone is allowed their own opinion and the right to voice it. However, when you are in a political position with a certain amount of power, everything you say will be scrutinized and picked apart little by little. When you become a political figure you have accepted this role and responsibility as well. If he supports the current policy, he should show that with his words and actions. His words state that he doesn't support it, and therefore should be criticized.
Elizabeth, Cincinnati, OH
I totaly support the generals remarks , someday we all will have to answer for our imoral ways
larry z, zumbrota, minnesota
At least the man was honest. I agree with him, I feel that it is immoral. Why is that a crime for me to feel and say that? An opinion apparently is only OK if it fits what ever liberal bullcrap happens to be in style at the time. Liberals get all uppity (and by liberals I dont mean Democrats, not all of them are liberals) about having their say, but when someone expresses an opinion that doesn't match theirs suddenly its a crime. Having a mainstream liberal media only exacerbates the problem, as they make every thing sound so outrageous.
Good for him for speaking up. Shame on those who are judging him for speaking out on what he feels is immoral. If he had said he HATES gays or something then I could under stand the outrage. He did not say he hates homosexuals, but that he felt homosexuality as immoral. Grow up.
blunt, logan,
It only requires an average amount of common sense to understand the fact that human beings are physically made for sex between male and female. It is also just as simple to understand that those in our society who WANT to practice sexual relations with same gender are now in a positions within our media (TV, motion pictures, journalism, schools, etc) which allows them to push their choice of sexuality as TRUTH. What this has done is created massive confusion for our youth and society in general.
Many people resent gays not for their choice of sexual preference,( for of course they have every right to live as they choose), instead gays are resented for their need to deny others what they themselves demand! Gays don't want to just live their lives in peace doing what they choose, they are trying to FORCE society to ACCEPT their behavior. I personally resent this greatly.
Just because some in our society "say" homosexuality is normal or born in a person DOES NOT make it true!!!
Charles, Atlanta, Georgia
Gay is not an option or normal way of life. It's scientifically probed it's a biological-behavior disturb/disease in difference as the fact to be at some ethnical human group. So, nothing against but, can't be treated as a normal which is a special matter. Neither can't be taked as discrimination cause but nor as a political flag. Who want's the Gays domain the World?...
Peter, Manhattan, USA
The General is obviously aware how decadent the West become, and I'm sure he's not the alone: it took you - what, 30 years to change the society in such way that today a city or country that doesn't have a "Pride Parade" (pride of what?) is considered outcast from "civilized society". Things are speeding up and I think you'll need 15 or so years for zoophiles to start coming "out of a closet". I mean, why not? It's a "sexual orientation" too, isn't it?
Praetorian Maximus, Casablanca,
I regard 'x race, x religion, x disability, x gender, x background' as immoral, my personal view of course.
In other words, don't like them, don't want them, get rid of them. Warm words to every bigot which only reinforces their view that hatred is legitimate, like the one who attacked me in public last year, just because he perceived I was gay.
Can you imagine the uproar if he had said one of the other categories above instead of gays, gay lives are still on the 'reduced to go' counter, cheap, and they want them out.
The Economist quoted an NGO who estimates over 2,500 gay men were murdered in Brazil over the last ten years, who cares eh? Certainly not Bush or Peter Pace I imagine.
Taylor James, LONDON,
How do you know that "gay people do not choose their sexuality. That is why it is not wrong or immoral it just is". I know plenty of gay people who would be offended by such determinism. The view just repeats a PC view, with little evidence to support it. The Gay community not only wants their 'rights' they want everyone to endorse their agenda and toe their line. Soon, those who take an opposing view will be subject to the rampant discrimination gays have been fighting agianst for so long. Who was it that said: "I don't agree with what you say, but I'll die defendning your right ot say it"?
Steve, Sheffield, UK
The Uniform Code of Military Justice provides the basis for order within the Armed Services. Until changed it prohibits sodomy under article 125 and any act that may bring discredit to or compromise the discipline and good order of the services under article 134. That is current law. The military is not a democracy. Our sole mission is protecting with our spirit, lives, and bodies the citizens that enjoy living in our democracy. Anything that possibly impairs our ability to accomplish this goal must be viewed as suspect. We lead young men and women that are still formulating their own identities. Too often they have the unfounded fears and phobias of youth. We need not distract them further with situations that may impair unit cohesion and the life and death trust required on the battlefield. I leave morality to God to judge. I do state that sex homo or hetero within the services is contrary to our duties and can damage the cohesion of a unit.
Barry Turpin, Goode, Va.
I am a homosexual man and I belive that Organized Religion and the act of participating in it is immoral. After all is it not to blame for many wars and crimes commited on a global scale? But dont worry right-wingers I dont think you are immoral, just everything that you believe in and practice.
So do what you do in the privacy of your own home but dont flaunt your activities in public where they can further spread hatred and illegitimate lifestyles to innocent people.
Tim Barr, Boston, MA
Where dose he get the right to say that homosexual acts are just as bad as adultery. Humm i didn't see anywhere that said that he was all knowing that he knew everything there is to know about things like that. *shakes head* No right to say things like that about people with the way things are going were going to end up back in the ages of knights and witch burning where everything is Tabo unless its what the "Higher arkey" Wants.. So if you don't like it don't do it but leave other people alone to what they want and what they do. I dun care about things like that a lot of my close friends are Homosexual and they are the nicest people i could ever have for friends. Like i have said before. If you dont like it You just dont do it and LEAVE other people alone with what they do. Are they bothering you are they forcing there ways on you NO so leave them alone and get a life please or the rumers corect that people follow like sheep to the sloter and dont think for themselfs anymore how sad
Somebody, Midland, Michigan, USA
This isn't about free speech.
A LEADER is perpetuating hatred, bigotry, ignorance, and discrimination.
Gay people being denied employment and opportunity due to this attitude in the population is NO DIFFERENT then blacks being lynched.
What if you were constantly harrassed 24/7 and had your life being made constantly difficult and nearly impossible to fit in and get ahead? What if I wanted to lynch your mother because I thought it was ok?
That is why gay people are pissed off. Unfortuneatly, you don't get it, unless your head is beat in. The only difference between many of you, and caged animals, is that you can put words together.

Gen Pace does not get announce his personal views on such matters while holding the position he holds.
Thats like announcing its ok to not support the troops.
Support these troops, but not these immoral ones.
Note he says nothing about the raping and murdering of Iraqis as being immoral, or this illegal war or the torturing of thousands, its the gay military that he feels is the problem.
He is mouthpiece for the Catholic Church.
The Pope just called on hif flock to use their positions of power to stand against homosexuality and abortion along with some other issues they feel are immoral.
And Pace being the sheep that he is listened to his sheppard.
OrwellsGhost, Bedford,
'America’s top general was condemned after he described homosexual acts as “immoral”...'
Perhaps others could well describe Generals in the US military as being, themselves "immoral" (at least), let alone the American Taliban tendancy.
Let he who is without sin....
Brian Vallance, LEFKIMMI, Greece
I think what he said is absolutely wrong, especially it is from someone of his position.
athee, los angeles, california
Homosexuals in the armed forces is what this is about.
I am a straight male and adore the female form but, as a serving soldier, I would be in severe trouble if I ventured into female barracks. Homosexuals must adore the male form but must be allowed into male barracks? This is twisted.
Alan, Lincoln,
Indeed, homosexuality is not as nature intended.
Michael Higgins, stockton, United Kingdom
I agree with General Pace. One's lifestyle is no ones business and it should not be flaunted. There are still those who are against such an immoral lifestyle and it should not be shoved down ones throat. We have the same right to desire such a lifestyle not be accepted as if it were not detrimental to the growth of this nation. Homosexuality is immoral period.
Lucy, Bronx, NY, USA
In light of this topic. I find myself being reminded that we live in a country "supposedly" founded on God. Even our money says "in God we trust". But society has come to accept anything that makes them feel good about themselves. General Pace's response and upbringing (based on the statement he made) are in line with out founding as a country. Even though standing for something may be foreign to our current society and Biblical teachings may be taboo. The Bible still states:
1 Corinthians 6:9-10 (NIV): "Do you not know that the wicked will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters, nor adulterers nor male prostitutes nor homosexual offenders nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God." Anyone that has an issue with that needs to take a look at themselves.
For the purposes of clarification I am not a pastor, just a regular guy.
Lawrence, Nashville, USA/TN
It boggles the mind the confusion you "Right to free speech" you right wing preachers have. Yes we all have the right to free speech however that does not include bigoted hate rhetoric! The homosexual community does not go in front of the media and declare nationally to condemn or imply that heteralsexuals are immoral or should be condemned for all the adultery, divorce. abortions etc that they are responsible for. All they ask is for for respect, and equal rights. They work, they pay taxes they help keep the economy going period. So next time you want to practice your free speech rights perhaps you should try saying this: Although I do not agree with homosexuality, rather than sayin gsomething negative and openly bigoted.
scot blakeley, Montreal, Canada
While it's admirable that he feels secure enough to honestly express his opinion, it is not his job to decide what is immoral, and what is not. Personally speaking, I think indiscrimately shooting and bombing civilians--even in a so-called "war," is immoral.
N B Golash, Glens Falls, NY
For you geniuses who contend that homosexuality is a learned behavior, i suggest you read the medical, scientific and psychological literature published over the last two decades that overwhelmingly concludes that homosexuality is a biological and fixed orientation, just like heterosexuality. if you don't study the issue, please don't bore us with your ignorance.
For you Biblical scholars who feel so empowered by the scriptures against homosexuality, please answer this: since the Bible also condemns divorce, adultery, touching pig skin, eating shell fish, wearing clothing made from more than one fabric, and many more activities/behaviors, why don't Christians rally against divorcees, football players, seafood restaurants, and clothing manufacturers? I'll venture a guess - it's because these so-called Christians are either ignorant, stupid, hypocritical, or just plain old bigoted.
the General has a right to his opinion, but the public has a right to tell him how stupid it is.
Rob, Toledo, Ohio
I honestly believe, when it comes to sexual preference, we all should be allowed to do what we want to do. Personally, I am heterosexual- if a man standing to my right was gay- that would in no way change my life. I think it is disgusting and immoral for anyone to pass judgements on others based on their sexual preference, Most importantly- for the Pentagon to have a "don/t ask, don't tell" policy- I feel it is as historically set back as slavery. Acceptance is key in our future. Start accepting.
Michaela, Wyoming,
Pace has the right to his opinion like anyone else. However, non of us have the right to swing our moral arms so wildly that we hurt our neighbor. Gay people come in many shapes and forms like all people. Most gays have a great contribution to make to society and the world. Why prevent them to do so by our "upbringing"?
Lourens Crous, Los Angeles,
If Gen. Pace has a problem with adultery, then how is it that we have a military at all??
J.P. Johnson, Lexington, KY
Maybe he should spend more time worrying about keeping the troops alive and keeping tehir morale high and less time playing little soulless neocon hate games.
George, Dallas, Tx
Again, this is a case of allowing those who are deemed "politically correct " to express their views but when a Christian does it, suddenly he/she is a horrible person. Why can the leftist democratic side can say whatever they want about anything without media backlash but give a Conservative a microphone and suddenly everything they say is geared towards hatred. Why is it a constitutional right when liberals speak but when the its time for a conservative to enact the same rights it suddenly becomes a feeding frenzy on how wrong they were and what they said ?
Charlene, Providence, RI
I am amazed at your article and all others like it. What about freedom of speech? Is General Pace not allowed to have an opinion? Don't you have an opinion that men like General Pace defends every day? So why don't you just leave him alone and stop bashing the poor man? Do you really expect everyone to embrace the gay agenda or stand silently by and never say what they really think? Why not be a little more grown up about this and tell the other gay advocates that it is ok if people like General Pace don't support them. Personally I happen to agree with General Pace's remarks. Homosexuality really truly is immoral. I believe that everybody knows this is true and that the reason they are so outraged and so up in arms about his comments is that they hate it when people tell them what they already know is the truth. So why not face the truth and accept it? That is a much happier approach.
Sid Connor, Laurel, MD
Alright, despite what is said, what I do not understand is why people feel they need to make decisions for others. Constantly going out of their way trying to tell people how they should live their lives. Give it up already, if they are leaving you alone, then why do you care what they do. Open your mind just a little and get on with life. Taking care of yourself is a full time job after all.
Besides, the generations will pass on, and and the new ones will come. Just so everybody is aware, that generation will be more open minded than this. In case you forgot, history repeats itself. It's common for generations to broaden their minds. Homosexuality will grow to be excepted, so stop worrying and concentrate on things FAR more important, like your own life.
Jon, Havelock, North Carolina
I am not homophobic!
I have no fear of gays.
Pete, Cov,
What a brave man! It takes a lot of conviction and courage to speak one's beliefs in this ultra-politically correct world. It's ok to speak your mind if you say what every one wants to hear, but don't speak up if what you believe is against popular opinion.
Way to go, Gen. Pace!
Maria, Ann Arbor,
It's an opinion. Jesus had an opinion. Gallileo had an opinion. Darwin had an opinion. I have an opinion.
Nature being what she is, both condones and admires both adultery and homosexuality as mutually exclusive. Adultery adds the natural advantage of bringing more of the adulterer's offspring into this world - and homosexuality has the opposite effect - reducing the number of potential offspring (to zero). They both naturally belong in the same category - so why the fuss?
Donna Davis, Reston, WV
I have many homosexual friends. Yet I agree whole heartedly with what General Pace said. NOWHERE in his comments did he say that homosexuals are immoral. That is not at all what he said. He said that "homosexual acts" are immoral. There is nothing in what he said that proves he is some kind of gay or lesbian hater. Like I said, I have many homosexual friends. That doesn't mean I can't hate what they do.
Ben Mann, Rapid City, SD
Its called freedom of speech for a reason. God forbid someone say something thats not politically correct without getting raked over the coals. The man was speaking how he feels about something. Respect that regardless of if you like it or not.
Bryan, Atlanta, GA
I find it depressing that in addition to hatred from their Muslim religious opponents, the troops also receive hatred from their Christian religious commanders. I seem to recall a holy man who said very little about what people did in their bedrooms but a whole lot about not judging others, and who was killed for these radical views.
The troops deserve better leadership and more compassion, whether they are gay or straight, Christian or other, male or female. They deserve better than hatred and scorn.
Kevin, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA
Every man has right to say his opinion. We all live in this morbid world together. But somewhere along the line... we started fearing other's opinions... especially to gay community. America is living in fear because of these small minority group. All Frozen in it's tracks... Let the General speak. We straight people have right to say what is right and what is wrong, just as much as gay people. This is a basic human right and in our first amendment. If your gay, good for you. live your life however you wish... But Do not shut our voices. I honestly think gay people don't have conscience. They stop at no end to prevent people speaking against their type. Even President of the United States don't have this power.
Jason, Los Angeles, United States
Yes, practicing homosexuality is like adultery. If you're already married to somebody else, that is.
When people say things like this I always wonder if they've got something to hide ...
Starling, Lancaster,
This has nothing to do with "expressing an opinion". This is about discrimination. If he'd said "sleeping with a black person is like committing adultery" y'all would be up in arms.
Starling, Lancaster,
Maybe homosexuals should start wearing pink triangles like in Germany in the thirties.
How about that General Pace?
Rail, Delaware
Aurelio Grisanty, rehoboth, DE
Bravo General Pace!
For those degenerates that say he's imposing his views on others; remember that he said that he supports the current policy. If Hillary and her band of leftists have their way, THEN whose views will be imposed?
Paul L, North Scituate, RI
General, did you forget that troublesome litte Commandment, "Thou Shalt Not Kill"? And don't you make your living, at least in part, planning the death and destruction of your "enemy"? Oh wait, you do it in the name of Patriotism. Never mind...
Craig R. Pierson, Locust,
I applaude the general for taking an appropriate and open stanch. It seems as if Christians are the only people that are not allowed to express their opinions without being severely chastised. Until the late 1970's, the practice of homosexuality was considered a mental illness by the AMA. Every culture that embraces immorality declines because it becomes weakened from within. That is what is happening here. As far as having a right over my womb, where is the right of the unborn to decide if they live or die? Nobody asks them because they can't speak for themselves. And Jesus will come back when he is good and ready. No human will make that decision.
Cynthia, Atlanta, United States
B. Turnbull:
Is pedophilia pre-determined before birth too then, and should be accepted as long as it's not acted upon? Or how about alcoholism too?
Charles, St. Louis Park, USA
gay people do not choose their sexuality. That is why it is not wrong or immoral it just is. It is extremely offensive to be told that my sexuality is wrong or immoral as if it is some absoloute truth when it usually comes from people with no understanding of homosexuality or no ability to empathise. It comes from their ignorance and prejudice and is justified by their religious beliefs which are extremely partisan. Why the obsession with us homosexuals why the focus on homosexuality rather than divorce or eating pork, or doing unto others or loving our neighbour. Why deny gay people love and respect ? Why inisist that others should live by your particular religious beliefs when they do not believe them. The arrogance is breathtaking. Why accept and allow gay people to serve and die and at the same time denigrate them. It seems to me that Christians ignore the truth if it doesn't sit well with their religious beliefs.
David Reid, London,
Must be an election coming up soon.
Congratulations to GEN Pace on proving himself to be yet another mindless Bush toady. Great, just what we need.
Makes you miss Taylor and Wheeler.
Congratulations are also in order for getting people talking about something that is a completely PERSONAL matter, rather than real issues like the administrations policy of spying on political opponents, torture of illegally detained foreign nationals, domestic spying, failure to secure our countrys safety against al-Qaida, failure to suppress the Taliban, illegal/immoral war waged on false pretexts in Iraq, failure to execute said war, continued indifference to the safety of American service members, maltreatment of US veterans, running up the National debt, promotion of evangelical Protestantism over the Constitution, cronyism, rising healthcare costs, violation of US citizens right to protection against unlawful search and seizure, abduction of the chem-bio weapon accord, global warming, supp
Thomas Jefferson, Salt Lake City, UT
The general western opinion is that gay and lesbian relationships are 'normal' and should be allowed. Most people gay or straight allow this opinion to be expressed. Funny how the world snaps back when someone dares to have a different view.
Please do not misunderstand me, I am not bothered what people do in their private lives. What does concern me is when a group feels free to express their 'correct' opinion and yet, just as swiftly, will deny others the same right to express theirs.
Graham Human, Bridgwater, Somerset
Yes "homosexual act" is not good. May I ask if you have a "child" will you allow him or her to marry the same sex?
or make love to same sex?
Yes God teach us to love but also teach us to condem what is wrong. Yes it is wrong to go against the teaching of Christ. To the General.... Bravo! To my brother and sister who are homo but not into practice of homosexual.
Im am proud of you.
dad, Ada, SG
When Christian Americans realise they do not have the right to force their moral codes and beliefs on everyone else the world will be a much better place.
If you want to live that way, you go right ahead - and do it minding your own business. You have no right to police any other American's bedroom than your own. You do not get to decide what other women do with their wombs. You do not force other people to celibrate your holidays at the expense of their own. And you don't invade countries based on lies in the hopes it will bring Jesus back.
Mortifyd, Phoenix, AZ USA
Sir,
"Sleeping with someone else's wife?" Or husband, surely, depending upon your particular gender. Methinks someone desperately needs to sit this General down and explain the birds and the bees
Simon Lloyd, Bourne End, Merry England
Whilst the General may hold these views he has no right to air them to the media. In a world where political correctness is everything and words are banned in case they are offensive nothing gives him the right to condemn and unreasonably hate homosexuals.
It is not true that we are living in a world of no morals or one that will have no morals, it's just our morals are changing. The Bible may say homosexuality is a sin but it also states we should love our neighbours and I think that should be taken regardless of their sexual preference.
How can the General be so judgemental of people when his country are fighting a war that is growing increasingly destructive?
Visitor, London,
Pace would have been potentially correct if he had said that openly gay men disrupt the very nature of a fighting unit. There is an argument there. That is the point of don't ask don't tell.
However to say it is immoral is simply following church doctrine that is commonly 2-300 years behind basic human rights. The church has always ostrasized one group or another until it realizes its' mistake or science clarifies things. The field of genetics will eventually prove our sex is determined before birth. Once this is clarified I wonder which group will be next?
B. Turnbull, Boston, USA
To: Sara from BC I could have not stated it better myself...
I am a former VA Hospital RNurse and mother of adolescents. I am shocked to hear General Pace's comments about homosexualty.
Perhaps this is to divert our attention away from the HORRIFFIC CONDITIONS the wounded vets are coming home to at THE VA HOSPITALS!!!
He should be embarrassed... to be spreading hatred and knowing hatred creates wars...HE IS A POOR ROLE MODEL...He is in the perfect job for people haters....create wars based on hatred for homosexuals, Jews, Moslems, Mexicans, blacks, Iranians, etc....It doesn't matter predjudice is taught and frequently it involves many things
including hatred of women....
What a role model for our young people....
My children are adolescents and it is a sad state of affairs that we are leading the next generation into!

DEB-Z , PROVIDENCE, RI, USA
Pace's equating of homosexuality as with infidelity is ridiculous. I may be gay, but I am not unfaithful to my partner of 7 years! Heaven forbid. Speaking of heaven forbid, the Bible only twice warns about gay acts (both in the old testamate) but condemns divorce hundreds of times. Imagine a military free of divorcees. Better yet, imagine a world without gays or without people slightly different. Imagine a utopia with all people living and thinking alike. It is not only impossible, it is not American!
Tom Palmer, Washington, DC
Live and let live eh?
Not so long ago divorce was immoral. Holywood soon fixed that!
I socialize with gays. Do I agree with the practice? No. Do I still like them as people and have them as friends? Darn right I do!
D.S., Ottawa, Ontario, Canada
It is unfortunate that our children must grow up in a world so full of hate. Every time I begin to believe things like racism, sexism, and homophobia are ways of the past, someone like Mr. Pace stands up to say something ignorant once again. Yes, everyone has a right to their own opinion. But if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything at all.
There are many people who serve America who are gay. Not just in the army, but in every little job that makes America a strong country. From farmers to shopkeepers to doctors to artists, nobody should have to fear their jobs or their lives because of their sexual orientation.
Yet another war waged on the behalf of religion. Unlike they, I will not attempt to speak on Gods behalf. However I doubt he would be pleased that his name is being used for the purpose of hate. In fact, it breaks the third commandment.
And by the way...God didn't write the bible...if you are going to preach, at least get it right.
Sarah , BC, Canada
Contrary to Ed Shindle the Bible is explicit in its condemnation of homosexual acts, which are not merely inconsistent with true Christian thinking but roundly condemned by it
Norman Shannon, Par, UK
The Second Edition of Webster's New World Dictionary on my desk defines "immoral" as "not in conformity with accepted principles of right and wrong behavior; contrary to the moral code of the community." Despite the best efforts of some in the media and entertainment industry to convince us otherwise, I believe that this is still true of most American communities. Thus, the general is correct in his opinion and free to express it as an individual. As the present leader of our armed forces, he is duty-bound to support the present policy until it is changed.
Roy Kristensen, Sandy, Utah
Agree with US General who says, gays immoral.
The Bible, the Word of God, agrees also the gays are immoral.
Jpe, PJC, Paraguay
why should general Pace be condemed for speaking the truth!
men with men, and women with women, definatly IS WRONG, AND immoral!
its going against nature, everything in life has a purpose, humans were made to be male with female, and to be faithful to that one, any deviations from this causes nothing but heartache and problems.
why lie to our children, and allow other peoples warped view corrupt their thinking, when we want them to be brought up decently, knowing right from wrong in our putrid society.at least he
In this issue there really is only right OR wrong.Mr. Pace should not feel he has to justify his good upbringing,
j allcock, norfolk,
Good on ya General Pace. Speak your mind.
This world has just become too political correct. Next we will be sending soldiers to the front in nice pink tanks, with limp rifles and soft bullets.
NAP, Grantham, UK
And mutilating innocent civilians with cluster bombs in Iraq is moral?
Andrew, Taipei, Taiwan
I agree totally. I was raised the same way. We condone to much immorality in this world. Why can't we get back to the roots of what the wonderful Country of America was founded on! According to my Bible, (KJV), it is a sin and an unhealthly one at that. You are NOT born that way....it is a LEARNED trait! I only fear for my grandchildren having to grow up in a society that has NO morals.....God help us all!
Donna Bastarache, Carthage, North Carolina
ha ha... genius... homosexuality is immoral but going to invade another country under the false premise of weapons of mass destruction then killing women and children while you there is ok? General Pace? General Ignorance more like!
j r, newark, u k
go General Pace. thanks for your courage to speak the truth.
anne marie, tuscany hills, cal.
Sir!
I was very disappointed to read that you consider people who are lesbian or gay are not suitable for military service. Your comment that their behavior is immoral is inflammatory and expresses a viewpoint that is NOT consistent with true Christian thinking.
I find it more immoral to to be responsible for the killing of innocent civilian populations.
ed shindle, camden, maine
I am condemned with the General.By what sort of upside down reasoning could he possibly be wrong?
Father Bryan Storey, Tintagel, uk
he is right and i strongly support that homosexuality is immorality and should not serve in the army
abdi elmi, cardiff, uk
Is don't ask, don't tell for gays or for anyone who disagrees with them? What ever happened to natural law? Just because I disagree with you doe that make me homophobic? Good for him.
john, chicago,
I think that what a person does behind closed doors is no one else's business. What is much more important is the fact that our government will actually waste our tax dollars fighting over whether this is right or wrong. Another thing that is wrong is killing innocent men, women and children or torturing people in jails. But these are all allowed. Killing is also horrible yet that is allowed. Hmm seems if you are going to throw out one piece of the Bible to the press to chew on you should throw the rest out so adultury is bad, so is killing, lying, cheating and stealing. So our government should take a look at itself and stop worrying about nonsense like homosexuality. Making policies about a way of life is NONE OF THEIR BUSINESS. I am a straight, married woman and I'll tell you what, what I do in the privacy of my bedroom is my business not governments.
Christina, east windsor, NJ
I'm with General Pace.
Tom Herring, Mission Viejo, USA/CA
I agree 100% . If mother nature had wanted same sex unions, those unions would produce offspring.
Lario, Memphis,
The General is right. More power to him.
Genius, Washington, DC
Sleeping with someone else's wife is surely worse, because 3 people are involved , or more, if there are children. It can break up a marriage .It is a form of theft. Where is the 'theft' element in a gay relationship, and is a marriage broken up?
It is immoral to ill-treat prisoners [and stupid when you are trying to win hearts and minds; ill-treating allies] Has General Peter Pace spoken out strongly about that?
Roy, Bristol, England
