The lakeside home of Johnny Cash, where the late singer spent much of his troubled life entertaining guests ranging from The Beatles to US presidents, has burnt to the ground.
The charred chimneys, the only remaining structure standing yesterday morning, will be seen as an appropriate monument to the “Man in Black”.
Cash and his wife, June Carter, lived in the house at Hendersonville, near Nashville, Tennessee, for more than 30 years until their deaths in 2003. It featured in the Grammy-winning video for Cash’s cover of Hurt, his last hit in 2002, where he was shown mournfully surveying the remnants of his life.
The home had recently been bought by Barry Gibb, of the Bee Gees, who hoped to rebuild it in his own style. He was described yesterday as being “very, very upset” by news of the fire.
Richard Sterban, of the group the Oak Ridge Boys, who lives on the same road, said: “Maybe it’s the good Lord’s way to make sure that it was only Johnny’s house.”
Other musical neighbours included the singer, Marty Stuart, who lives next door and was once married to Cash’s daughter Cindy. He said that the house was “a sanctuary and a fortress” for the country singer. “So many prominent things and prominent people in American history took place in that house — everyone from Billy Graham to Bob Dylan went into that house.” It was also visited by President Carter, a distant cousin of June.
Barbara Orbison, who lives nearby and is the widow of Roy Orbison, said: “That house had a really strong scent of Johnny and June. It was built on rock. It had to be a strong house to have survived right there at the lake. I guess it will be forever their house.”
The fire started about 1.40 pm on Tuesday. Although firemen arrived within five minutes, they could not stop the blaze spreading.
The cause is unknown, but Mr Steele said that the flames took hold quickly because construction workers had recently applied a flammable wood preservative to the exterior of the house. One firefighter was slightly injured.

When I heard about the fire....my first thought was sadness. But my feelings changed. Everyone says the same thing about Johnny and June Carter Cash. They were legends. And that is true. But one thing that you don't see very often, is that undying love...that power and passion that they had. That house was built on that love. When June died, a part of Johnny died with her. He visited her grave until he couldn't walk anymore. They are together now. That is how it is supposed to be. And the house was theirs....no one elses. As sad as it is that they are gone, may they rest in peace, they are in a better place.
All my love to Johnny and June, forever.
Lindsey, Telluride, Colorado
Johnny & June Cash loved one another, raised children, wrote music, and grew old together in thier home and that home is part of their Legend and should have been left that way. It will always be their place as it should be. Someone was looking down and made sure that is the way it will be.
The home was in perfectly fine condition at the time of their deaths and knowing all the history of the home....Why would anyone want to go in and change a thing ? Guess that won't happen now !
Barbara Callahan, Shreveport, Louisiana
Johnny Cash lived a "troubled life" there? Johnny Cash lived a famous life, no more troubled than any of the rest of us except for those looking to turn the private life public, the mundane into more myth.
And so it is.

The Cash house was like a shrine to the couple. Mr. Gibb should never have tried to change what had been perfect for over 30 years. You don't fix what isn't broken, right?
Vanessa Stanton, Leamington, Ontario, Canda
I think it is the Cashs' way of saying no one other than them would live happily in that home so if it burned, then no ghosts will be hanging around to torment anyone who came to the house or lived there.
A proper memorial to Johnny and Joan Cash

Maybe Johnny and June just couldn`t bear one of the Gibb brothers living in their home.
