Ms Jones then used a subsequent interview with the Associated Press that was re-published in more than 60 American newspapers and picked up by CNN to describe a burden of expectation that was making students fearful, less likely to think in original ways and a bore to teach.
When the article was posted on MIT's website — with an introduction reading: "We in admissions are all proud to work for such an inspirational boss" — it attracted dozens of comments from prospective students, expressing their relief that there was a human face behind the university's daunting application process.
"I love Marilee Jones!" wrote one high-school student. "I have been debating with myself as to whether I should apply or not — I know that the people that apply are extremely intelligent... I have depression so it is hard for me to find motivation. But this article just made my heart stop beating for a second there! I am so motivated, I think I'm going to go start on the application right now!"
Another commented: "I am so fortunate to have attended an information addmissions session in Seattle with Marilee speaking!!! She really moved me and gave me the confidence that I really do have a chance without perfect SAT scores (my biggest downfall)!! She is truely a gripping and moving speaker, I hope she reads my application!!! I love this school."
The resignation of Ms Jones comes as students in their penultimate year of high school will be considering whether to apply to MIT in the autumn and less than a year after another Massachusetts' institution lost its a director for a similar reason. John J. Schulz, the dean of Boston University's College of Communication, resigned after admitting that he embellished his academic record at Oxford University.
Staff in MIT's admissions office posted a notice on their website to register their "state of shock at the loss of our leader".
Matt McGann and Ben Jones wrote: "Marilee has built her career around trying to make college admissions better — with more compassion and less anxiety. Many are understandably concerned that the momentum of this mission will be compromised by these events.
"But we pledge to you that as we recover in the days ahead, we will continue to celebrate and uphold all of the good that Marilee has brought to our office and to our field, and we hope that others around the country will do the same."
