HOLLYWOOD’S golden boy, Brad Pitt, is facing his first cinematic flop a film about the brutal life and death of his boyhood hero, the bank robber Jesse James.
Warner Brothers, which co-funded the film, has failed to persuade the star to change The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford from a leisurely “poetic” film into an action-packed crowd-pleaser, or even to shorten its title.
As a result studio executives have decided to put the film into a small number of American art house cinemas and cut back on advertising. Commercial failure could cost Pitt millions as he was an investor in the £20m production.
More importantly, it could affect his ambitions to make more than 20 independent films through his own company, Plan B, including projects with Angelina Jolie, his girlfriend, and Jennifer Aniston, his former wife.
For Pitt, 43, James is personal. Pitt was brought up in Missouri, where James was born and is still regarded as a freedom fighter against the northern victors in the civil war. James became famous through letters he sent to southern newspapers claiming he only robbed banks and trains owned by rich “carpetbaggers” from the north.
For nearly 20 years he evaded the law but in 1882 he was shot dead by his cousin Robert Ford for a reward.
“I have been trying to make this film for years,” Pitt said recently. “I was concerned that I was already too old, because I am ancient by Hollywood standards and Jesse James was just 34 when he died. But then the opportunity came along, and I turned down maybe more lucrative films to do it. I only hope the people like it.”
Pitt reportedly sat at the back during a test screening in Los Angeles where viewers were questioned about a rough cut of the film. Some said that at three hours it was too long. Others said it was saved by stunning photography from Roger Deakins, the British-born cinematographer.
At one point, insiders claim, there were up to half a dozen different versions of the film in rival editing suites as Pitt and Andrew Dominik, the director, raced against the clock to produce a “final cut” before Warners halted its funding.

Well...let's ask this question...does Hollywood and Brad himself believe that he has a loyal audience who may be interested in viewing his artisitic vision for a change? "Long titles and leisurely "poetic" "are certainly not characterisitcs that would turn me away from a Brad flick (although his VERY disappointing treatment of Jen almost did... so he owes her big time perhaps through Plan B)...a man who has had an interest in Monet style landscaped gardens and Frank Gehry Designs, I would argue, clearly has, at least, a visually artisitic appreciation/vision....I guess the question now lies in his capacity for a cinematic artisitc vision and the loyalty of his audience....
So what is the belief? Risks can only be fueled by belief....

Being from Missouri, and having done extensive research into the James family, I'm looking forward to seeing Mr.l Pitt's movie. I only hope that it is more factually correct than previous Jesse James movies. (The first "Jesse James" movie was filmed where I live, near Pineville, Missouri - and while it was very entertaining, it was only "loosely based" on the truth.)
Sadly, I fear that the forces of "political correctness" will, once again, stifle the truth, and downplay the Confederate aspects of the James' family life and motivations. The only other film in recent history that had "any" Confederate sympathies about life in Missouri - Ang Lee's "Ride With the Devil" - was canned in very limited release despite being an excellent and entertaining film. (Which, by the way, it was more pro-Union (Yankee) than pro-Confederate in my opinion!)
Let's hope that Brad Pitt surprises everyone, and makes the James family proud!

Agreed with the speculation that it is the politically incorrect presentation of the Carpetbagger era that put this film on ice. I'm sure the bizarre title didn't help, but that hasn't stopped films like "300", "Snakes on a Plane", and "Thank You for Smoking" from making it in the movie houses.
The fact is that the Civil War Myth is nauseatingly sacrosanct in American society. The attitude that one has a God-given right to invade another sovereign nation and put it to the sword--in order to "save" it --is what has given us our current state of affairs in Iraq today.

Good for Mr. Pitt! The true story of Jesse James has yet to be told on film: a classic hero of working people that is also the villain to rich people. An American Robin Hood pooking a finger into the eye of "The Man".
The violence that produced and finally consumed Jesse James was a function of the decisions made by the lawyers and politicians representing the world's largest corporations (mostly railroads and banks); specifically the sainted Abraham Lincoln. Typical outcome: little guy kills a handful of people and gets branded a violent criminal (he was) while the big guy whom causes the deaths of over 500,000 people gets a big statue and a whitewashed historical treatment as a "savior".
Taking on the moneyed interests in Hollywood to speak the truth raises my respect for Mr. Pitt. I can't wait to see this movie!

I've grown to like Brad Pitt as an actor. If this movie is as good as it's title, I will love it. I can't wait to see it.

I will go to see Brad Pitt's film about Jesse James, when -- and if -- it comes to my neighborhood. I will buy the DVD when -- and if -- it becomes available. The full truth is almost never told in the politically correct popular media about the War between the States (to begin with, it was _not_ a "civil war"), and that may have more to do with Pitt's problems with this project than anything else.

Having grown up in Missouri I have always been fascinated by the legend of Jesse and Frank from a historical point of view.
Having the sir name of Howard piqued my interest when I read Jesse and Frank would use Howard as an alias.
Family history states that my Great Grandfather Elija, who was a woodcutter, befriended Jesse and Frank sometime during their years in Missouri. If I remember correctly Frank took the name of Howard to live out the rest of his life in Missouri.
With that said, I realize that family history, without given proof, is pretty shoddy.
I didn't realize Mr. Pitt was raised in St. Joe, Missouri.
If Brad wants to make a film about a legend of Missouri, be it bad or good, I say go Brad.
I'll watch the movie.

I have seen "Jesse James" movies many times. I think it is time to come up with "original" movies and not just the same ones over and over, 1,2,3,4 how many more of the same story? Violent movies are not really that popular, look who won the best movie "Little Miss Sunshine", and best sujpporting actor. I think if you will not let your kids watch violent movies, then quit making them, for all the other children to watch, if the are not watched. The older ones just get ideas from them. Angelina should clean up her act, marry Brad, and do nice movies. Live your life to impress other kids and that goes for the movie business too. You can give millions, and then knock it down with making violent movies. Too much violence in our country, and the world, don't add to it. Stand up for what is right, and be a role model to kids by making "non-violent" movies.
Anita , Los Angeles,
Whilst I truly hope this movie gets released in the form Brad Pitt wants it, and when it finds it's way to England I will be first in line, the movie will be of course yet another romantic and sentimentalised take on the Jesse James myth.
Jesse James was a thug and a crook who used (and, more often, others used on his behalf) the chaos, the suspicions, resentments and injustices of post Civil War Missouri, to build a Robin Hood type legend. The truth is Jesse himself would have been amazed at the myths created in his name.
Many before and since have used circumstances to justify criminality and thuggery (Irish gangsters, terrorists, perhaps even Robin Hood himself!), but Jesse never really used the fig leaf of the Civil War to justify his actions; others did it for him.
But fthe fact remains that from "Jesse James" through "The Great Northfield Minnesota Raid" to "The Long Riders" some great movies have been made about the James Gang; and I think Pitt's movie will rank alongside.
