MARINE biologists in California will tomorrow resume efforts to herd a pair of injured humpback whales back to the Pacific Ocean after they strayed down the San Joaquin river delta to the city of Sacramento, almost 100 miles inland.
The plight of the whales, a mother and calf, has captivated California and was expected to draw thousands of onlookers to the levees around a murky waterway close to Sacramento’s Capitol building, the seat of state government.
Both whales are believed to have been hit by a boat propeller after they wandered off their normal migratory course northward from waters off Mexico. They passed under San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge and would have encountered heavy shipping traffic as they headed further inland.
Initial attempts to persuade them to swim back the way they came have so far proved unsuccessful. Among whaling experts joining the rescue effort was Bernie Krause, a so-called “whale whisperer” who lowered loudspeakers into the water and played recorded whale noises.
Krause’s recordings had played a key role in the 1985 rescue of a humpback whale nicknamed Humphrey, who had followed a similar route up the Sacramento delta. Krause, an electronic audio specialist who helped develop the Moog synthesizer, managed to lure Humphrey back down the river using sounds he had recorded off the Alaska coast.
Last week he was less successful as the two whales reached a dead end in the channel. They have since been swimming in a deepwater basin used by ships for turning around.
Humphrey survived for 26 days before he was eventually lured to safety and scientists said last week they were in no hurry to move the latest arrivals, both of whom bear visible gashes from their encounter with a propeller.
Rescue operations were suspended this weekend to allow the whales time to recuperate. “We really do not want to stress the mother and her calf in any way,” said Frances Gulland of the Sausalito-based Marine Mammal Center, which is assisting with the rescue.
US coastguards were keeping sightseeing boats at a distance, and the channel and basin have been closed to commercial shipping traffic.

I would suggest using one of those airplanes that hold water from the Pacific Ocean and fill it up and when the whales decide to turn back, drop the salt water in front of them and maybe they will follow it back to the Pacific Ocean and survive.
Marianne Giordano, Phoenix, Arizona
I think with all the nonsense other animals have to put up with from most of the dominant monkeys, we should help them all we can. I hope the whale and her calf can be saved, and perhaps raise people's consciousness at a time when the International Whaling Commission is about to vote on commercial whaling. These are massive, beautiful, sensitive mammals, of course we must help them.

With all that is going on in the world, you'd think that our dollars could be spent feeding the homeless or protecting our children from the psychopaths/pedophiles running loose in our own country or getting our young people out of Iraq or getting many of the last the Hurricane Katrina homeless into permanent shelters.
(Mostly white) Americans care more more about whales, horses, dogs and guns than they do their neighbors and it's a shame!
Mrs. Bailey, New Jersey, USA
Let us meditate on their return - I believe if enough
people think positive thoughts magic CAN happen.
We so need to save these wondrous creatures.
Perhaps that is their message to us?

I believe trying to herd these whales back to the ocean is a bit like trying to coax a cat out of a tree. Left alone, theyll probably figure it out on their own and if they don't..........oh well. Certainly there are better assignments for the resources being employed on their behalf.

The whales came inland under the Golden Gate bridge, into San Francico Bay, and up the Sacramento river, and need to be safely escorted back out under the Golden Gate into the Pacific. It is a symbolic event indicating the level of our care, and our ability to come together and solve a collective problem.

RE: "they strayed down the San Joaquin river delta "
This may seem petty, but the whales swam UP the river, and the humans are trying to get them to go DOWN to the ocean. It is basic fact checking and a small error, but you are a journalist, are you not?

Hello My Dear Baby Whales,
"It me!!! a goody guy from Wisonconsin. I am your good friend, please listen to me and go back to the ocean. We will try to give you food as bait so that you go back to the ocean and leave our civilisation alone. We are bad, spoilt and rotten. Please dont get dirtied. Already you got hurt for coming a paltry 100miles."
Folks,"I hear the whales replying me, 'please leave us alone. We have gotten lost and our navigation systems dont work. We are confused, hurt and tired. We are also hungry'"
A Good VEgan, madison, wisconsin,
Bravo! to all of you who are working to save these magnificent creatures. Our own destiny is profoundly linked to honoring all inhabitants of this fragile, precious planet. Best regards and many thanks.
Lucienne B Simon, PhD, Shreveport, LA
I think it is admirable that so many people are taking responsibility for these animals who have basically been injured as a result of man in their domain.. as usual.
However progress on the oceans; as elsewhere can't now be turned back and it is refreshing to think that so many are doing so much to help them.Perhaps a century ago this would not have been the case so there is positive change in mans interference with nature, as well as negaitive.
Fingers crossed for the whales and all their human helpers!
Jane Moore, East Grinstead, United Kingdom
It certainly has been an odd and rather delightful sight to see whales on your morning commute when you live 90 miles inland, but just the same everyone here is rooting for them to leave and get back to safety. Oh and just for the record the whales are in the city of West Sacramento not next door Sacramento.
Peter, West Sacramento, CA
Net the baby whale, pull it out see (in the water) and watch momma follow?
As far as nature taking it's course, it will, Hopefully we are not scratched off the list.....
Mike, Ironton,
Probably not enough time and money. The oceans are dying, if you haven't noticed.
97, oregon,
We humans caused great harm to nature/environment. These two whales would be fine if they did not get injured by a manmade machine - propeller of a ship. Humans are the most destructive animal on earth and most sufferings are self induced - poverty, illness, crime.... The whales deserve to be shown some humanity and be rescused.
I wish the whales good recovery and good journey home to Alaska. Respect for mother earth and ourselves start from caring for the smallest creature.
Mother Earth, Boston, Massachusetts
So what do you want? Do you want marine biologists to fight crime before they save whales? How will that help anyone? What have you done lately to solve the problems you list? I'm glad to live in a world where whales can be helped, instead of people standing around saying "I'm not going to do anything because children are missing and drugs are being sold."
Rrrockhound, Delaware, Ohio, USA
Bravo,
This is a much better rescue operation then the London one.
audrey, london, england
oh come on how much time and money is being spent on two whales where there are children who are missing, have no homes, have no food, drugs being sold, soilders in iraq dying. if this much effort was put into saving those people the world would be a much better place. nature will run its course on the whales if they are to make it out they will.
