AN Essex girl may be the first lady with a tongue stud to have set her sights on the White House. The wife of Dennis Kucinich, a left-wing Democratic congressman and 2008 presidential candidate, is a 29-year-old hippie chick from Upminster at the end of London Underground’s District line.
Elizabeth Kucinich, née Harper, has been on the stump with her husband, a 60-year-old anti-war campaigner from Cleveland, Ohio, mingling with the likes of Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama backstage at the Democratic presidential debates. “There’s a kind of camaraderie,” she said.
A 6ft tall willowy redhead who has been compared to Arwen Evenstar, the Lord of the Rings character, she towers over her diminutive husband. “Who cares?” she said in an interview. “I like wearing high heels so I’m used to being taller than most men I stand next to.”
Nor is she bothered by their 31-year age difference. “I have never noticed it at all,” she said. “Dennis is a very mature but young-at-heart gentleman and we complement each other.”
Kucinich met her husband-to-be two years ago when she visited his office in the House of Representatives with her boss
as a volunteer worker for the American Monetary Institute, an offbeat group dedicated to reforming the “unjust monetary system”.
It was love at first sight for both of them. Immediately after their meeting, Dennis Kucinich phoned a friend and said: “I’ve met her [my future wife].”
He was mesmerised to receive a business e-mail from Harper with her usual signature line from Kama Sutra, one of her favourite films: “Knowing love, I shall allow all things to come and go, to be as supple as the wind and take everything that comes with great courage. My heart is as open as the sky.”
He proposed at their second meeting in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and they married three months later. The Hollywood actress Shirley MacLaine attended their wedding.
“I knew at once I really wanted to marry this man,” Elizabeth said. “When you know it, why hang around?” It was Dennis’s third marriage, but by the time he met Elizabeth he had been single for more than 20 years.
If Dennis were elected, they would make a great team, Elizabeth said. “Can you imagine what it would be like to have real love in the White House and a true union between the masculine and the feminine?”
There were clues in her childhood that they were destined for each other, Elizabeth believes. She lived with her mother, a divorcée, on the outskirts of London in a farm labourer’s dilapidated house that was lovingly restored over the years. “The address was 4, Dennis’s Cottages, Dennis’s Lane,” she said.
Her mother runs a healing and therapy centre and passed on her love of new age philosophy to her daughter. Known at school in Essex as “the Jolly Green Giant” because of her height, she studied religion and theology at Kent University and spent time in India and Tanzania, where she worked for Voluntary Service Overseas.
It was in India that she encountered somebody with a tongue stud and later had her own implanted — a bar with two delicate balls on either side.
On her MySpace website she lists one of her favourite bands as Coldplay and says her heroes are “my beautiful husband and anyone else who embraces peace”. She describes Dennis as a “very philosophical, deep thinking person” rather than a new age type, but he is a vegan, unlike her — she still cannot resist occasional dairy products.
At Kent she unexpectedly signed up for a master’s degree in conflict resolution after meeting the course lecturer in a pub. She knew she had chosen the right subject when her final exam took place on September 11, 2001.
“The rest of the world was sending out its love to America but US officials just wanted to kick out. I remember thinking then I’d love to come to America and help them to reconcile with the rest of the world,” she said.
A shy girl in class, she has now learnt to speak in front of thousands of peaceniks and activists on behalf of her husband and his presidential campaign. Dennis was slated for his anti-war views when he first ran for president in 2004 but now “represents the voice of the majority”, she said. “Americans have come to understand he was right all along.”
As the wife of a congressman, she mixes with politicians across the political divide. Earlier this month she attended a reception for the Queen at the British embassy with Dennis, and was thrilled to meet her. “I have great respect for the royal family because of their dedication to public service,” she said.
Another of her heroines is Diana, Princess of Wales. When she died, Elizabeth’s mother rang her daughter in tears. “I was in shock for a very long time,” Elizabeth said. “She held an incredible position in my heart. I was devastated. There hasn’t been anyone able to bring that compassion back into public life.”
If Dennis makes it to the White House — admittedly an unlikely prospect — Diana will be the first lady’s role model. Americans, who always loved the princess, would like that, but they might tell Elizabeth to lose the tongue stud.

I read the entry from Katie Steptoe, Harold Hill, UK with interest. As another person born and bred in Essex, I too was not surprised that she received a good education. I think, however, that Elizabeth's personal story is remarkable because she has lived her life trying to help other people, if only more people were like her the world would be a much better place. That is not immature or patronising, it happens to be true.
Rob Walker, Colchester, UK
I hadn't read much about Elizabeth until today, and the more I read the more my admiration grows - especially since she's only two years older than myself. It's amazing and inspiring, and for a generally cynical (these days) realist like myself, that's saying quite a bit.
It's a damn shame that he doesn't have a real chance of winning. It'd be wonderful to have a first lady with a degree in international conflict resolution... hell, we might actually become internationally respected again.
Jennifer, Ann Arbor, Michigan, USA,
Dennis Kucinich is the smartest presidential hopeful since gov. Clinton, and the most integritous since, dare I say, Abraham Lincoln!
Must our embarassment of outdated election system continually waste the best and brightest leaders in order to keep the status quo?
Andres Escamilla, Town of Gulfstream, USA/FL
Yea Right! Dennis is a mental midget and his wife is a giant dreamer. God bless their souls!!
Rick, Richmond, VA
It'd be wonderful to have Dennis & his wife in the White House, people who speak the truth & love peace! But first let's impeach bush/cheney, to purge this country of warmongering and repression, and to restore the Constitution. Imagine no more war, no more billions to Haliburton, no more torture, no more illegal wiretapping, restoring habeas corpus.
Fred Sokolow, Santa Monica , CA, USA
The poo-poo comments won't matter once Dennis becomes the U.S. president and Elizabeth is First Lady. American cynics disbelieve, but when we all get non-profit universal healthcare in the U.S., and our family members in the military can leave the war zones and start rebuilding at home and abroad, and the folks in Cleveland get their jobs back when the Kucinich Administration cancels NAFTA and the WTO, not to mention the jobs and benefit to the planet when Dennis initiates a Works Green Administration pushing for organic ag and renewable energy standards (in our lifetime!) - we'll all be much better off.
None of the other candidates will do this. Let's start supporting ourselves and each other and actually work for the candidate who supports all of us, instead of supporting who you're told to support by the sold out corporate media and naysayers.

funny since dennis is a democrat and cares, the fact that his wife is 31 years younger is ok, however fred thompson whos wife is 25 years younger just wants a trophy wife.......more liberal hypocrisy
Jeff Smith, auburn hills, Michigan
I saw Elizabeth Kucinich on Fox & Friend's this morning and she came across as an annoying outsider. A 29 year old snip, with a gentle voice and unrealistic view of world affairs, in particular the USA. As for Roman Catholic Dennis! Even St. Augustine said: Those who wage war justly aim at peace, and so they are not opposed to peace, except to the evil peace, which Our Lord "came not to send upon earth" "We do not seek peace in order to be at war, but we go to war that we may have peace. Be peaceful, therefore, in warring, so that you may vanquish those whom you war against, and bring them to the prosperity of peace."
awats, Maspeth, NY, USA
How charming to see the Brits pontificating about our American political system!
The truth is that American candidates are plastered all over with money and influence, as well as the requirement to suck up to potentially helpful organizations and individuals. (Simple translation: "Lie.")
Even God can't win a U.S. election without billions of dollars and a lot of behind-the-scenes deals. Kucinich may run all he wants, but he doesn't have enough money, and you need LOTS of money to run a serious campaign.
He also suffers from having a surname with more than three syllables; you will notice that only three Presidents since 1900 have had surnames with more than two syllables, and one of those only got in because he was a war hero.
In general the American public favors presidents with short names. Presumably this is a strategy to match the public's equally short attention span.

I have always admired his views, which are sound, even though we understand the US system well enough to know he has only a slight chance. But Dennis Kucinich is brilliant -- and so, evidently, is his beautiful soulmate! Thank you for publishing this priceless peice!
Maria Ashot, Berkeley, California, USA
Speaking as a constiuent of DK the rest of the world should realize he is one of the chief proponents of what Dickens, writing in Bleak House, call "Telescopic Philanthrophy". On his watch our district has lost thousands of good paying industrial jobs to countries who want to "adjust the monetary policy", violent crime continues to rise and the city centers are becoming no go areas especially at night, and race relations are at an all time low.
Larry Seman, Broadview Heights, Ohio
It would appear that Dennis Kucinich is no more than the perfect foil to Elizabeth's immature and patronising views. I do not understand all the fuss about her tongue stud - every child on the estate near my house has one. Perhaps we should be a little more concerned with what comes out of her mouth rather than that which is stuck inside it.
As a female born and bred in Essex I am not remotely surprised she enjoyed a good education, but perhaps she should widen her view of the world before professing to be able to solve all of its problems.
Katie Steptoe, Harold Hill, UK
Although it's true that Dennis (who is the congressman from the other side of the city I live in) has little change of winning the Democratic presidential nomination, he's well-liked in his district and will always win reelection, no matter how much some people gripe. And Elizabeth is a really gracious and likable person, as well as smart and articulate. I've met her at numerous rallies, speeches and other campaign and peace events, and she's always so nice to everyone. I wish them both well, although I'm one of many who wishes that Dennis was spending more time in congress pressuring his fellow congresspeople about getting out of Iraq and less time running his presidential campaign.
Anstasia P., Cleveland, Ohio, USA
I don't think anyone takes Mr. Kucinich for a serious contender for the DNC nomination.
Personally, I'm hoping to see Fred Thompson announce his intent to run soon.
Eric, Chattanooga, Tennessee
Lo, Portland:
This is newsworthy because she is an Englishwoman with the (admittedly small) chance of becoming First Lady.
If Gordon Brown's wife was Oregon's finest, you can bet you'd read about it in the New York Times, Washington Post etc.
Jealousy doesn't really come into it.
Chris Taylor, Worthing, England
What IS so funny about peace, love and understanding? No money in it for the facists I suppose.
Stuatr, Johannesburg, South Africa
How big a man is Denny the K? He's the first to file Bushist impeachment charges.
Vic Anderson, Eagle Lake, USA/FL
As a story about an interesting Brit girl with a different life, This is good stuff. Strange that commentators have to expose their prejudices with such naivete.
wokrightinn, Rudkøbing, Denmark
Nothing about Dennis is ordinary or second rate.
He is real and honest and good.
This will probably eliminate his chance for the presidency given that we Americans celebrate style over substance every time.
Art Durand aka Whitebear, Mukilteo, USA/WA
Very nice, but speaking of reality, he didn't make the cut last time, and he won't this time either. Not that I'm wild about any of the other prospects....
Linda, Albany NY,
i love hippies,i could use her as a centre pole for my wigwam.much love.

she is beautiful, they look fabulous together. good looking AND peaceful - they have my vote
Sunita, Northwood, UK
I can't believe people are so judgemental. If you're all going to judge these people, judge them on what they do after they get into office, don't villify them before they've even started. How could they possibly be worse than what is there at the moment. They might seem quirky to some, but they come across as happy, upbeat and generally positive individuals, which in comparison to all the misery and paranoia in vogue at the moment is frankly refreshing. Give them a chance!
Catherine, Dublin, Ireland
It is sad, but she has hooked up with a political joke. Dennis is out of touch. He would do for the U.S. what the British Labour Party did for Britain.
I don' t wish any ill to either of them.
Bill Turner, Selma, Alabama
Paul Houghton, I think you logged on to the wrong site.
I usually associate the " AH..but as it appllies to basically white working class folk its ok,right?" type comments with The Sun newspaper.
And what really makes me laugh out loud is the fact that your whinging and grumbling is coming all the way from South Africa. Brilliant!
Ngozi, London, England
She sounds like an excellent role model for my kids, I'm going down
the nearest Lada dealership right now to get myself a bit of left wing motoring, and I'm implanting my tongue stud right now in the office with my biro, it certainly beats reading about left wing delinquants making an embarassment of the English in the States.
People like her are the reason I live very happily in France and they are the reason I cringe when I hear about them, hoping one day England will pull itself together.
John Bland, mondeville, France
It is a strange but undeniable fact that three ofthe top ten state girls' schools are in Essex, at Chelmsford, Colchester and Woodford.
Terry Hamblin, Bournemouth,
NightFire - Ad hominem attacks without warrants are, I take it, a much higher form of thought and communication? What exactly about Kucinich's policy views do you think ignores reality or is self-delusional or egocentric?
Ryan, Rochester, NY
Nightfire writes "The amount of self-delusion and egocentrism involved is quite astonishing.", From Alabama, heart of the Bible Belt where reality oriented thinking is quite definitely not approved of. If the self-delusion and egocentrism of Elizabeth & David is so bad then why is it so good for Israel?
I'd rather have a new age peacnik in the White House than a member of the God squad with messianic beliefs and a desire to take over the world with highly non-christian military force.
John Small, Faversham, UK
Its amazing how the derogatory term Essex girl/boy is used so frequantly, even in this pc obsessed age we live in.
It comletely discriminates against a whole group of people based solely on the area of there birth.
AH.....but as it applies to basically white working class folk its ok.right?
paul houghton, johannesburg, south africa
Why is this even newsworthy, other than to spike the ire of the conservative trolls who revel in jealousy over Kucinich's great game?
Lo, Portland, OR
Elizabeth and Dennis Kucinich are indeed the perfect pair, both having spent their lives engaged in magical thinking, which is no doubt calming to them because it ignores reality. The amount of self-delusion and egocentrism involved is quite astonishing.
NightFire, Pike Road, Alabama, USA
Kucinich? He has as much chance of the presidency as I do, and I'm too young to run.
And to speak heresy, Diana wasn't that special. Just a woman who was marginaly better looking than the average Brit.
Sam, Oxnard, CA, USA
I think this woman has had some incredible education and with her knowledge, can be a great First Lady. Have you heard her or Dennis speak? Once you hear Dennis speak at a live venue, you will be hooked! He makes perfect sense. Check out her YouTube videos, this woman is an old soul and is a champion for peace and humankindness, even before she met Dennis. I would love it if both of them were leading the country. Do some reasearch on them!
Tee, Tampa Bay, Florida
So what did you expect anyway?
Sam Russo, las vegas, nevada USA
Lol.. 'At the end of the London Underground's District Line.' Thats jokes.. Anyway.. I didnt even read the whole article.. But the beginning was jokes.. x
Jazz, London, UK
Perhaps if we let the so-called freaks run this circus of a country, something good could actually be accomplished.
Natasha, Pensacola, Florida
"But they might tell Elizabeth to lose the tongue stud. Next, it's 'What kind of pets do the presidential candidates have, and other Real Issues..." Please. What do you care? The conservative bias in this article is already enough to make me break out in red-[state] hives without that stupid, pointless dig. You'll take our tongue studs when you pry them out of our cold, dead mouths.
Edward Morris, Portland, Oregon
yeah, i'm sorry, but the idea of some stupid 29-year-old english chick thinking she'll get into our white house and "help us reconcile with the rest of the world" is truly scary. thanks, but i think we'll be ok without her new-age intervention. and i love how they explained about her tongue stud as her discovering it in india???? no, she got it because every other kid in the world has one. it is no more unique than this girl's views, of which i'm sure she thinks they are incredibly forward thinking.
candi, san francisco, ca
If Dennis likes the tongue stud who's to say she should lose it?
TJ Cassidy, Arlington, Virginia, USA
Just when you think Washington politics could ot possibly become an even bigger circus.
Marianne, Cincinnati, Ohio
Nice story but totally useless. Dennis Kucinich has NO chance at the White House. At the absolute best he is angling for a cabinet position. What his wife does is insignificant. She is not being elected. But she can easily be a turn off to voters in the mid-west. The age thing will raise people's eyebrows and I am not sure if the British thing will to. Elections are cruel
Dan , Frederick , US
The magazine "U.S. News and World Report" ranked health care systems throughout the world, and listed the U.S. at number 36, despite having the dubious honor of having the world's most expensive system. Cuba, one of the world's least expensive, was ranked 37, Insurance companies sell health coverage only to the qualified healthy who can afford to join a "plan." As insureds on a plan become ill (hypertension, diabetes, heart problems, etc), they become trapped within that plan, and the remaining healthy ones opt to join competing cheaper plans, as they don't wish to pay the health bills of the sick plan members by paying higher premiums. Eventually, a dwindling number of trapped plan members must pay geometrically increasing policy rates. D. Kucinich is the only presidential candidate to advocate a national, single payer health care system. Existing federal subsidies to health care, combined with a 1 1/2 - 2% tax, would cover all U.S. citizen - much cheaper than private cos.
Karl K., Sarasota, FL U.S
Wow, I love Elizabeth's attitude and think she would be a wonderful first-lady, speaking from the heart. We need that so bad right now and nobody is stepping up to the plate. The good thing is the more George Bush polarizes the populace against him the more people that will learn about Dennis and Elizabeth. I'm torn between him and Obama...who also has a very nice intelligent wife. It's a nice change to see from the silent 'arm-candy' role of the past.
Dave, Chicago, IL, USA
No one takes him seriously except the people who elected him to the House, I guess. Hey, wait a minute, who cares who you take seriously?
Paul, Bretton, CO
I'm amazed that anyone could consider her, "as loopy as they come," maybe because they aren't old enough to remember Mrs. Reagan, while 1st lady, using an astrologer to advise her husband on how to run the country.
It's hard to imagine anyone doing a worse job of running the U.S. than George W. Bush has done. (although he has done a decent job for some of the wealthy folks...and it is possible for someone to do a worse job.)
I don't think I'll be voting for DK, but Elizabeth would be a welcome personality to our networks' news!
Joe, Buffalo, NY
WE HAVE A WINNER !!!! And not for President, for utter, sheer insanity.
Carmen, Nashville,
He has my vote. Dennis would be far better in The White House than the present occupant!
Kim Righetti, Upland, Calif. USA
David,
I am quite certain as a resident of the City of Cleveland, and survivor of the Kucinich administration, that you have no idea what you are talking about.
Dennis Kucinich was not only the worst mayor the city has ever had, he is also an embarassment to all people in Cleveland. He is only overshadowed in inefectiveness by his fellow Cleveland representative to Congress Stephanie Tubbs-Jones.
Jim Roth , Cleveland, Ohio, USA
If dmc, WI would read Kucinich's issues at Kucinich.us, he may not consider him so loopy. Also any person who has the courage to file articles of impeachment, quite deservedly, against the US vice president as Kucinich did in April, has my unending respect and admiration, and my vote. The press seemingly has a moratorium against writing anything about Kucincich; my take is that they are afraid that once the citizens find out about him they won't be able to stop the momentum.
mtf, Cairo, NY, USA
Life's not fair, because he wasn't such a bad mayor, but if Kucinch is known for anything by Americans, is that he was the mayor of Cleveland when the river running through the Rust Belt city became so polluted it actually caught fire. He soon went from becoming one of the youngest big-city mayors in America to one of the youngest ex-big-city mayors.
David Olive, Toronto
David Olive, Toronto, Ontario
This is hilarious. This broad is about as loopy as they come. What she truly doesn't realize is that nobody here in the US has taken Dennis Kucinch seriously since he was mayor of Cleveland (thats almost 30 years ago). No one takes him seriously now either. Hence the reason I'm not worried about either of them assuming a position of power.
But thanks for the laugh of the day...
dmc, WI , USA
