Dick Cheney's daughter Mary has given birth to a baby boy whom she is planning to bring up with her long-time lesbian partner, Heather Poe.
Samuel David Cheney, the US Vice-President's sixth grandchild, was born in Washington yesterday - and received a visit a few hours later from Mr Cheney and his, Lynne.
Mary Cheney announced in December that she and Ms Poe had decided to start a family - a decision that was criticised by some conservatives who believe that children should only be brought up by heterosexual married couples. The couple have not said who the boy's father is.
Ms Cheney is herself a Republican and ran her father's 2004 re-election campaign - although Mr Cheney has always treated her sexuality as a private matter.
At a New York forum last year, Ms Cheney, who is a vice-president at the internet group AOL, said that she did not want the child to be used a political weapon.
"This is a baby. This is a blessing from God," she said. "It is not a political statement. It is not a prop to be used in a debate by people on either side of an issue. It is my child."

The last statement says it all. "It is my child". What a happy moment for this couple - nothing to do with politics.....

I am a divorced Mother who raised three children alone. Two were boys. I aked them if it made a real difference that their Dad was never around for them, since I did everything. I did baseball, softball, swimming, I bought motorcycles cars, I tried to make sure they were not deprived because their Dad never saw them. And they informed me that it did make a difference, and I couldn't know what it was like because I had always had two great parents. I wished I had chosen a better mate for their father, but I was young and only saw the outside. They felt cheated, and they were. And that was my fault for not planning a life for them with a father in the home. How will this little Cheney baby feel later in life, to know his Mother picked a woman, a lesbian, to take the place of his father. Is that right to do this to the child. Oh no doubt it will be loved and have all the advantages of money. But is it fair to the child to pick this life for him. We'll see.
