The Bush Administration said yesterday that it was finally ready to admit up to 7,000 Iraqi refugees into the US, after months of delays and growing condemnation on Capitol Hill over the refusal to grant asylum to some of the 2.2 million Iraqis who have fled the war.
Acknowledging for the first time that Iraqis who have helped US forces since the 2003 invasion are at risk of death inside the country, the Department of Homeland Security said that new procedures were in place to screen the thousands who have been referred by the UN for resettlement in the US.
Refugee groups welcomed the move, but condemned it as too little, too late. The US has admitted fewer than 800 Iraqi refugees, leaving more than two million in refugee camps and cities across the Middle East. Another two million Iraqis have been displaced internally by the war, according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees.
Refugees International, a Washington-based advocacy group, said that Sweden had accepted 18,000 Iraqi refugees and Australia has resettled nearly 6,000. Britain has granted only 115 Iraqis asylum since 2003, out of 8,075 applications, according to Home Office figures. Ken Bacon, president of Refugees International, said: “The US should be doing much more.”
Congress ignored the issue almost completely until the Democrats’ takeover on Capitol Hill last year. During hearings in January – when only 466 Iraqis had been admitted since 2003 – a Sunni translator from Mosul told how assisting coalition forces had made him a condemned man.

Why should the U.S. take on the burden of taking on these refugees? The U.S. is already paying the major price of this war to free these people. I get a kick out of these countries who state that the U.S. should take more refugees. Let's take the country of Sweden for example. What has Sweden contributed to the war? What, I did not hear your answer? The answer.....nothing but lip service. The U.S. has contributed billions of dollars, the lives of over 3000 brave soldiers, and a major rebuilding project to repair and upgrade the infrastructure of these countries. I guess that is why the U.S. is the greatest country in the world and will always be the leader.

Sir,
The ordinary people of the United Kingdom have led the way, respecting the people who fought for our values in WW2. The overwhelming public support for the retired Gurkhas is a symbol of our longer term friendship, unlike those who just want to use their allies as sandbags.

with open borders and an amnesty coming up
we have been sold out by the elites the refugees and others
wont make a difference

I feel that we have done enough to help, how can we be sure were not letting in the very ones that hate us so much? If the
United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees want these people so much let them take them into their homes. I cant
to feel that we are opening up the hen house to put the fox in.
Terry Branch, Shady Cove, Oregon
Why should America always open its doors for refugees? I do not understand why anyone is to blame for these people (or the people of other wars) being in danger of being killed. They helped the U.S. SO WHAT? Isn't the duty of the citizens of a nation to try and stop tyrants and despots from ruining everything. That is the risk you take, when you stand up and do the right thing. They should stay in their country and continue doing everything they can to solve their nations problems. Do NOT run away, defeated. Stay and continue to fight the fight. Why does everyone always want to quit as soon as they can and run to some other nation.
Perhaps if these "refugees" KNEW that they would NOT EVER get asylum, MAYBE the help that they provided would have actually been enough to WIN the conflict, rather than doing as little as possible, just to qualify for refugee staus!!!!

This is an embarrassment;
I worked with iraqis; they are intelligent and educated people, many of whom have risked everything by supporting America and Britain and our troops.
While America lets millions of Mexicans walk across our borders who will get a free pass, we make Iraqis beg for a new start.
We should be ashamed.
bob, Fairbanks, USA/AL
Sir,
Well, well, well, the US state loves to talk about freedom, just a shame it can't walk the walk. A puerile level of intervention, rush to bring the house down, but avoid responsibility for the problems caused.
After 11/9, I wonder how many Americans just wanted to get back at the A-rabs, any A-rab will do.
Is this a new kind Hollywood-style virtual freedom, one that can be switched off with a remote control?

The Balkanization of America is going to lead to one hell of a war.
Give thanks to the liberal jerkoffs who have been destroying the country for some time now with their la la land ideology.
I can't wait until the last of hippie generation die off.
H, queens, NY
guess the american people don't have a say anymore. it's not for the people, by the people anymore. we are just good enough to pay our taxes and support them because they will be on welfare. it's just great being an american, isn't? it's all about diversity. will see how long it takes for them to run in the streets and call for jihad and the destruction of america. it's all good, they have the right of freedom of speech. what a world we live in.
mira, salem, oregon
Isnt this a wonderful way to get more terrorists into America, and, as usual, right under our governments nose. This is ridiculous.
I dont know who is running this country anymore, seems like a bunch of Idiots!!!
Here we are all clamoring to have something done about the invasion at our southern border and the 12 or more million illegals already in this country and our President is bringing in Iraqi's in, and we all know how truthful they are. So if something bad happens in this country in the near future i guess we will know who to blame.
We keep saying it is time to seal our borders and protect ourselves, but no one is listening. I hope the people are paying attention and will know who to vote for and who not to vote for.
rdavis, schenectady, ny
I have heard that Ted Kennedy and his group have advocated allowing 120,000 Iraqi's into our country. This move is typical of this Senator. He stopped many western and Eastern Europeans from entering but opened the doors to minorities. If other liberal countries accept these people, so be it. They will pay the price for their liberalism.
I forgot who said it, but " YOU AIN'T SEEN ANYTHING YET".
Russell Khoury, Paramus, N.J.
Muslims are only loyal to their religion and not their country. Big mistake to let any refugees or immigration from Muslim countries to come to the U.S. Just look at what is happening in Europe.
Steve, Salinas, California, USA
One day an Iraqi is your best friend. The next, they're blowing up your efforts. Such are the fruits of Islam. If a Country accepts Iraqis, it should be woman and children only. Let the "real" men stay to remedy their blossoming democracy...
Russ, Chicago, USA
How much more cynical can it get? Not content to "Brain Drain" places like the UK, the US is bribing Iraqis to betray each other, with a bizarre visa lottery that rescues a small number from a horror it created.
A horror to which there will be no end, ever. The alternative for these 4 million + refugees (in fact, all Iraqis) will be to become the new Palestinians, the new Taliban, the new Al-Qaeda.
Andy Dyer, London,
What guarantees do we have that the refugees coming into this country will assimilate into our culture and not become some more terrorists hiding within our population? Our "enemies from within" are a growing threat to our security. Why must we increase the potential by importing more of the very people who hate us?
