Paris Hilton traded her black strapless gown for an orange inmate jumpsuit as she went from the red carpet to a prison cell to start a 23-day jail term yesterday.
The hotel heiress surrendered to authorities in Los Angeles just hours after making a surprise appearance at the MTV Movie Awards. “I am trying to be strong right now,” she told reporters as she posed for pictures on the red carpet. “I’m ready to face my sentence. Even though this is a really hard time, I have my family, my friends and my fans to support me.”
Soon afterwards, the 26-year-old celebrity socialite drove with her lawyer, mother and sister Nicky to check in at the Men’s Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles in an attempt to avoid photographers.
The booking sheet released by the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department listed the first official reading of her weight, recording her as a 5ft 8in (1.72m) blonde with green eyes who weighs 8st 3lb (52kg). Her booking number was 9818783.
“Her demeanour was helpful. She was focused, she was cooperative,” said Steve Whitmore, the sheriff’s spokesman.
Hilton, whose great-grandfather Conrad started the Hilton hotel chain, was then moved to the women-only Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood. She will serve her term in a “special needs” unit containing 12 two-person cells reserved for public officials, celebrities and other high-profile inmates who need to be kept separate from the rest of the 2,200 prisoners.
Her cell has a table, a sink, a lavatory, a small window and two bunk beds, but she will spend most of her time alone. The TMZ.com celebrity website reported that, although prison officials had screened a woman who was designated as her cellmate, they had decided to keep her in solitary confinement for 23 hours a day.
Required to eat in her cell, she will be allowed out only to shower, use a telephone and watch television in a small adjacent area for one hour a day. Mobile phones and BlackBerrys are banned.
Hilton, a high-school dropout, became an internet icon when a homemade sex tape featuring her and a boyfriend was leaked online in 2003. She was arrested for drink-driving in Hollywood on September 7 last year and sentenced to 36 months’ probation and had her driving licence suspended. On January 15, she was caught driving on the suspended licence and sentenced to 23 days in prison for violating her probation.
“I have had a lot of time to think and have come to realise I made some mistakes,” she said in a statement. “This is an important point in my life and I need to take responsibility for my actions. In the future, I plan on taking more of an active role in the decisions I make. I want to thank my family, friends and fans for their continued support. Although I am scared, I am ready to begin my jail sentence.”

— The women-only Century Regional Detention Facility in Lynwood is five miles south of downtown Los Angeles. The two-storey, concrete building, which opened 13 years ago, sits in an industrial area, beside railway lines and beneath a busy motorway.
— Inmates are issued a kit that includes a toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, a comb, deodorant, shampoo and shaving implements, along with a pencil, stationery, envelopes and stamps.
— Hilton will have to alter her beauty regime somewhat. According to the website TMZ.com, her hair extensions will be removed and she will have to rely on the prison shop for cosmetics. It sells eyeshadow, an eyebrow pencil and hair colouring.
— If she decides to broaden her mind, she will be allowed up to three books and magazines a week, as well as a maximum of five photographs.
— Madame Tussauds, New York, will display a wax model of Hilton dressed in a black-and-white striped jailbird outfit for the duration of her sentence.

Paris, NY,
Well, this is one strike, easy to pick up two more with her lifestyle. This chick could easily slip into a life term in CA. Watch out, that 3-strike law has mean teeth!
Joe, Houston, US/Tx
Hey, it's an LA jail. Very tough place, filthy and dangerous. She will be scared. They have to put her in protective custody or face lawsuits. She doesn't deserve to be slashed or savagely beaten.
32 days is a long time in jail (I know). Something really bad can happen at any moment. She may get urine or feces in her food. She may be attacked when she leaves her cell for one hour a day.
So it is a good, hard punishment!
How do I know all this?
1. I am an American. We are very, very smart people.
2. I have been locked up in LA County jail a few times, for drinkin' and fightin'. It's right out of hell
Steven Hall, Fort Mill, SC/USA
Paris should explore finishing her high school in adult ed courses, and then going to college or university.
Em Hawthorne, Ottawa, CAN
Well I on't really know or care who Paris Hilton is, but what little I've read convinces me of one thing. She is not somebody I shall be suggesting my young daughter looks up to. I think we'll stick with Florence Nightingale, Madonna (for rescuing a child) and Alison Hargreaves,
Steve, Moscow,
Last Saturday a 22 year old friend of our family was killed by a drunk driver. Although Ms. Hilton has not yet killed behind the wheel of her car, her irresponsible behavior and elitist attitude should cost her more than 23 days in jail.
Special treatment , that celebs often get, is not what she needs to prompt her to make those changes necessary to be a responsible, considerate citizen.
Has she met with surviving family of anyone who has been harmed or killed by those DUI or DWI?? Maybe this is what she needs as part of her experience, maybe then she would really begin " to take an active role in her decision making."
MT, NY, NY
El Rod says; She got a reward of "good behavior" All inmates receive goodtime. it's an incentive used to control behavior. 30 days = 10 days good time. If you have ever worked in a jail or prison this is a good management tool. It's not just Paris. It's all of them. (Except for federal)
The incentive is (to behave) This is for the benifit of the jail staff.....
Bill, Minneapolis, USA
She is not going to prison, she is going to JAIL. There is a difference. Jail is local time less then 1 year, prison is a commitment to the state for over a year. if your going to report it, report it correctly.
This is a misdemeanor charge. Most people get the same sentence she does. She's not getting special treatment. Jail is not the horrible place people expect or want it to be. Most people in "jail" want to do their time and get it over with.
As far as a cellmate. based on classification, and yes safety of the inmate, she may not be a good candidate for a cellmate. I know people want to see her suffer, but in reality this is a DWI (shameful) but in the realm of the criminal justice system, this is nothing. Also, she's not going to jail for the offense, she's going because she failed to abide by probation conditions. I can't stress this enough. SHE'S GETTING THE SAME PUNISHMENT MOST PEOPLE GET!!!!!
Bill, Minneapolis, USA
"The booking sheet released by the Los Angeles Sheriffs Department listed the first official reading of her weight, recording her as a 5ft 8in (1.72m) blonde with green eyes who weighs 8st 3lb (52kg)"
It really said 8st 3lb on the booking sheet? How quaintly British!
Pete Jones, London,
One book Paris really should read is "Be My Guest" by Conrad Hilton. She would learn the humble origins of her family's wealth in New Mexico, and some good lessons on life. In fact, we should all read it.
LAurence Budd, Ft Collins, USA/colorado
Leave HER alone - she is doing the time the judge gave her. Relax she is not an axe murder.
brad, lexington, ky, usa
She probably got a smaller sentence than was normal because of her money and status. I hope it cost her a fortune.
Justin, Wuhan, China
Dam system again showing a celeb special treatment by not giving this clueless bitch a cell mate
mike, Tustin, califorina
If you had just kept her adorable kinkajou babyluv instead of getting that little rat looking dog back then none of this would have happened.
Like when was the last time you ever heard of someone owning a kinkajou going over to the evil side?
ROMBO, NY, NY,
Laurence, no doubt you, like I, are mourning the death of the ironic as a form, the highest form, of humor and comment.
Well said, Sidney
Karen, Chicago, US
HMMM it's not like she had a choice. She was sentenced to jail.
Daniel, laurence, sydney
To those of you still struggling with the concept of irony, yes I was being sarcastic.
Still, I'm please I managed to provoke a lively debate on Paris Hilton's imprisonment!
I have to say this is the most fun I've ever had with the Timesonline so far... thanks guys, it's been emotional.
Laurence, Sydney,
Wah Wah Wah. Had she taken a "more of an active role" in opening her own mail, she would have known that her license was suspended. Cry me a river.
Karen , stockton, california
Actually I think Laurence was being sarcastic.
(The clue is in the address being outside USA)
Richard, London,
Once again the criminal justice system rears its ugly inept head. If only taxpayers would realize the waste of time and money that is spent perpetuating the charade of crime and punishment. Ms. Hilton should have been sentenced according to the law. Not given special preference because of her social status. Once again the dominant society insures that every day citizens be kept in the dark. The truth is; you break the law, you pay your debt to society. Shame on everybody who believes this poor young woman deserves one bit of sympathy.
Alex, Albuquerque, New Mexico
"In the future, I plan on taking more of an active role in the decisions I make."
Utterly hilarious.
M, Nottingham,
I hope in the future, we will spend more time on us peasants rather than "the elite few." Innocent people are killed weekly by drunk drivers, and she acts like 23 days is a lifetime. Most people would be in jail for months or years. She got a reward of "good behavior" before she was even in prison. Paris, the best thing you can do in life is to spend time with kids and women in Darfur, Bosnia, Iraq, South Central LA, Bronx, and the many other less fortunate places in the world. Live their lives so you can appreciate and be more responsible for yours.
El Rod, NYC, NY
Hello Simon,
I always thought it was the north americans who didn't get irony, particularly those from the good ole US of A, you're letting the side down old chap.
I am heartened to see that people want to see Paris learn to think and act responsibly, I think it is enormously brave of the US custodial system to take on such a challenge. I wonder if the results of this correctional sentence will be verifiable.
pip pip.
Kidd Garrett, Bristol, UK
solitary confinement is no joke and is not a cakewalk. There have been numerous stories on the psychological damage it can inflict on a person even when the duration is relatively short. I'm not saying she doesn't deserve jail time but you shouldn't be so quick to say that she got off lightly.
b, washington,
It would of been interesting if inmates would of found her... they would of given her more than the old' chelsea grin!
Adam Webb, MK, UK
Hey Laurence of Sydney. I wish you were right!! But please accept an American celebrity wake up call slap.
A. Resonsibilites for ones actions? If she did that. She would'nt have violated her first no driving sentence.
B. She can't duck it this time. To do so would find the L.A Sherriffs Department waiting for her at the nearest trendy club. Where after arrest she's spend the full term of her sentence in jail instead of the 23 days.
C. Lets face it. Shes not in the general prison population. Put her there and I guarantee she'd never screw up again. 23 days in isolation? Shes waited longer than that to have one of her skirts hemmed.
D. Who's unfairly incarcerated? The average American girl who gets 60 days, and loses her license for 2 years for the same offense, or poor Paris?
E. You're right about no book deal. I'm sure she can't write!
F. There will be plenty of after the sentence interviews. Her value just went up and thats what she counts on.
Murph, Madisonville, KY/USA
This is better than when Martha Stewart went in the slammer...and that was fricken hilarious!
What's not so funny is how we've blurred the lines between entertainment and reality to the extent that this kind of chick can even get to the level where someone like me even knows who she is.
kevin, hampton, ct, usa
Simon, I think Laurence is being sarcastic!
mick, carmarthen, wales
Paris has done some charitable things with her notoriety, but it does not make her above reproach. She broke the law, and endangered herself and others in doing so. She should serve like any other person. If we start making exceptions for celebrity DUI's, what next?
Jenn, Akron, Oh, USA
I don't see how anything this person does is news. I thought this article was about something else. Who cares some rich blonde bimbo went to jail? Only those who despise their own lives, I guess.
Dave, Phili, PA
Crips or Bloods? Red is so last year, so I think Paris will throw down with the Crips. Won't be long before all of teenage hollywood is flashing gang signs.
C.U. Later, Buffalo, NY
Oooh! Schadenfreude!
Caught drink-driving, caught driving twice since her licence was suspended, and late to court to be charged. I've no idea how that constitutes "good behaviour" - unless it's all relative...
Also had to laugh at the lawyer who thought her sentence was unfair. 23 days for a drink driving offence alone would be extremely lenient, IMO.
Lee Duff, Reading, UK
Lots of vengeful and jealous people are enjoying some schadenfreud right now. I think they are very sad and pathetic.
Chris B, Nottingham,
Three books or magazines, Emma? Are you sure she can read?
starling, Lancaster,
"I think it's fantastic that, at 26, she has realised that sometimes it is important to take responsibility for one's actions."
My six-year-old understands that concept. What took Paris an extra twenty years?
U.R. Kidding, Washington, DC, US
Money does talk. I have nothing against the step great grandaughter of Zsa Zsa Gabor, personally, as i do not know her. but i think the press howl is absurd on this lady, on all sides. In the end, she calls the shots. Of course people do love to read all about it. so she gets to sit in the VIP cells all to her self alone. So What?
wayne stedman, yuma, arizona, usa
"I will do my time." she said.
"She will be treated no differently from any other inmate." The officials said. ?? Oh really, so just for appearing at her court appearance she has her sentence cut in half.
She is allowed to surrender herself to the Sheriffs dept.
She is put into a secure section of the prison for "at risk" offenders.
The authorities "screened" potential cell mates for a suitable one??
Then they decide she wont be given a cell mate after all.
So she wont have to fear her sentence as nearly all other inmates do, other women who have been sentenced for similar crimes are housed with hardened criminals who prey on the weak and small. Justice is supposed to be equal for all, obviously not if you are rich and famous then you just have a period of your life curtailed but you dont have to worry about treated as a commodity and for your safety as the other at risk inmates do.
Its ridiculous!
Paul, London,
With all the words wasted, these ones included,on this thing that's going to jail, one would think we were discussing multiple life sentences instead of a slap on the wrist of 23 days.
ron, toronto,
Hey Laurence, are you having a laugh?? Unfairly incarcerated? After driving without a license and drunk, I think she should be made an example of and put away for a much longer period of time, so she can realise how stupidly pointless her shallow existence really is, and hopefully grow up and do something worthwhile with all that money and power that she has inherited!
Simon, Surrey, England
"If only the countless other people unfairly incarcerated around the world would show the same courage and determination."
Yes indeed, with a little courage and a lot of determination, she may even find the strength in her solitary "special needs" cell to forgot that she is in prison at all, and if she is really made of steel she could immerse herself in her reading material (three books or magazines per week) to drown out the distant sounds of the other prison where the mortals are. Let's hope the prison library has an under fives section.
Emma, Paris,
Well, you do have to admire her - what is that word? - Chutzpah. Paris Inside is going to be an interesting "B" side to Inside Paris.
Howard, Johannesburg,
Well, I for one have the utmost respect for Paris. I think it's fantastic that, at 26, she has realised that sometimes it is important to take responsibility for one's actions.
No doubt she will deal with this with the strength, dignity and humility we would expect from Ms Hilton. I am also confident that she will not use this to further her appeal to idiots through a book deal/motion picture/TV special or a series of exclusive interviews.
If only the countless other people unfairly incarcerated around the world would show the same courage and determination.
Laurence, Sydney,
