Fans, paparazzi and news helicopters watching her every move, Paris Hilton was handcuffed and ordered to court today in the latest chapter of her tussle with the law.
The hotel heiress and general-purpose celebrity suffered the indignity of being bundled into the back of a Los Angeles County Sheriff's car after a judge rejected her request to have a court hearing conducted by telephone.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael T Sauer, despatched a court vehicle to collect the socialite from her home in the Hollywood Hills, which was surrounded by photographers and reporters, so she could appear in person today at a hearing which will decide whether she is returned to prison.
Hilton was allowed to return home yesterday after serving just three days of her 45-day sentence for driving offences and told she that could complete her punishment under house arrest.
The decision to allow her to complete her sentence in the comfort of her own home for "medical reasons" was met with outrage.
Don Knabe, County Supervisor, said he had received more than 400 angry e-mails and hundreds more phone calls from around the country complaining about the decision to release Hilton from prison. "What transpired here is outrageous," he said. "[It] gives the impression of ...celebrity justice being handed out."
Public denunciations flowed from the sheriff’s deputies union, local politicians, civil rights leaders, defence attorneys and, most crucially, from Judge Sauer himself, the judge who originally sentenced the hotel heiress to jail time.
The judge had specifically ruled that the socialite must serve her term in prison rather than at home. When he learned of the decision by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department to release Hilton early, he demanded that she return to court, where she may be sent back to jail today.
Prosecutors have also threatened to hold the Sheriff’s Department in contempt of court for releasing Hilton early contrary to the orders of the court.
Sheriff Lee Baca has defended his decision to release her early. "It isn’t wise to keep a person in jail with her problem over an extended period of time and let the problem get worse," Baca told the Los Angeles Times.
Hilton was driven out of jail in the dead of night on Thursday. Reports have suggested that Hilton had not been eating or sleeping since her arrival last Sunday at the Los Angeles County jail. She has phoned her lawyers to complain about her pillows and blankets and is said to have spent hours sobbing in her cell.
"Paris Hilton has been fitted for an ankle bracelet and put under house arrest, after authorities determined to release Hilton from prison due to medical reasons," said Steve Whitmore, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department spokesman.
Officials would not discuss Hilton’s medical condition, but confirmed that the decision to release her from jail was made after extensive consultation with medical personnel.
The New York Post reported that she has been seeing a councillor and refused to eat her prison-issue hot dog on Tuesday night.
Hilton’s sentence had been reduced from 45 to 23 days for good behaviour, but under the deal to release her into the community she would now serve the full term.
The star of the Simple Life reality television show would not be able to travel more than 30 yards from her house for the next 40 days.
Hilton is likely to host some well-known visitors during house arrest in her mansion in the Hollywood Hills. One of her legendary parties was broken up by police earlier this year and guests have included Cameron Diaz, Nicole Ritchie and Britney Spears.
Hilton was jailed for driving while banned. She was arrested in Hollywood last September for reckless driving and had her licence suspended, she was told to attend alcohol education classes.
In January she was pulled over by the California Highway Patrol and forced to sign a document reminding her that she was not allowed to drive her car. A month later she was caught at the wheel once again, this time she was charged with violating her probation.
Hilton remained defiant on the eve of her incarceration and made a surprise appearance at the MTV Movie Awards a few hours before checking into jail.
"I hope that I’m an example to other young people," she told a confused crowd outside the film awards show. "I did have a choice to go to a pay jail. But I declined because I feel like the media portrays me in a way that I’m not and that’s why I wanted to go to county, to show that I can do it and I’m going to be treated like everyone else. I’m going to do the time, I’m going to do it the right way."
She was housed in the "special needs" unit at the jail in Lynwood and not forced to interact with most of her 2,200 fellow inmates.

From her treatment of her dogs to her disdain for the law, Paris Hilton has clearly not shown anything remotely resembling feelings. What would have happened if someone had been injured or killed as a result of her attitude that she is above the law? I think she should shut up, go back to jail, serve her time and accept the responsibility that comes directly from her own irresponsible actions.
D. Basel, Cockeysville, Maryland
Let her do her house arrest and be done with this. Most people with her type of violation get a couple of days in jail...why did she get 45??? So the sentence to begin with is unfair. Besides, this whole situation at Lynwood has caused other people to suffer...such as the school that was suppose to have their graduation on the sheriff station's lawn. That's been cancelled because of all the paparrazzi and media attention. Let her do her house arrest and everyone can move on to something more productive.
Herbert, Upland, CA
This is the most disgusting display of special treatment I've ever seen. I've carefully examined what values guide me in my life and the top two are 1) Taking responsibility for your actions and 2) Fairness. I wonder what values Paris Hilton lives by.....obviously not either one of these. Very sad that she has taken so much of our time given our great country is at war, so many of our citizens do not have health care so can't afford to take care of their medical needs and that New Orleans is still broken even after 2 years. Paris, where are your priorities.......so sickenly self absorbed.
Marylin C, Loveland, CO
Paris Hilton should serve her time as any other citizen,if she needs to be moved to a hospital ward, let her pay for it as is done in most states. A female inmate died this weekend in tenn because she could not be treated as a person of wealth. A tenn inmate was executed with doubt where or not he fired the shot that killed another person.if ms hiltons mother, sister, father should want to fill ms hilton sentence by proxy,,fine with me.......
norm sheffield, selmer, tn 38375
I can't help but wonder how much it might have cost Paris to go home!!!
B Wyman, Phx,, Az
Send her to Pelican Bay. She'll have plenty to do there.

Dusty, Death Valley, California
refusing to eat prison food is NOT a "medical condition" and does not constitute "good behavior" for which she might be released early. Furthermore, if she wanted to "...be treated like everyone else..." and "...do it the right way..." as she stated publicly outside the film awards, then why did she go to the "special needs" unit where she does NOT interact with "everyone else"?? what a crock--money can buy you anything in this country...
jack, tulsa, ok
I must say I'm surprised at the way Paris has chosen to deal with this; Much has been made of the fact that she has made millions of dollars herself (by sheer force of personality and precious little talent apparently).
I really thought she would be able to turn this to her advantage, adapt to the circumstances, make a few jailbird friends and emerge 23 days later having 'done her time' and seen the error of her ways.
Talk of special needs, sobbing into her pillow and complaining about her blankets- how very disappointing, it turns out she is just a spoilt little rich girl after all.
Sue , Edmonton,
this is outrageous that your social ranking would determine your obligation to play by the rules and take your legal punishment if you choose not to. On so many levels, we are either a society governed by the law or we are not. Has anyone considered whether or not Sheriff Baca's campaign coffers have been benefited or will be by the Hilton family if Paris stays out of jail.
M Ramos, Riverside, Ca,
Does Paris Hilton have a need of a local politician (councillor) or has she got emotional problems because then she might like to talk to a counsellor?
P Gonta, London, UK
I think everyone should leave this situation alone. There is way too much hatred coming from our country regarding this. Why don't you guys be angry about the children who's starving or all the people who's on drugs. Fight for a cause. This is so not worth giving your time and energy to. Go do something positive with your life instead of hating Paris Hilton.
Lanita, Los Angeles, California
complaints of her pillow and blanket, refusing to eat, and crying over her accomodations. does this constitute good behavior or disruptive behavior?
rick, dallas, tx
Paris Hilton is what the late Dr. Leo Busgalia would call "a loss of human potential." I pity her beyond words. What a wasted life.
Tess, Chicago, Illinois
Young men and women are still dying in Iraq and Afghanistan....how bout we get our priorities straight. Long story short, WHO CARES!!!
Terry, Dayton, OH
Send her back to jail to finish her sentence, just like any other
citizen would. NO FREE PASSES this is not MONOPOLY. She
broke the law she has to suffer the concecuences........
Julio Carrillo, Sunnyvale, CA
I'll bet five bucks she's gotten the DTs. That's why no one will come out and say what she has. I've read she'd gotten a rash and that she wouldn't eat, Both of those are symptoms of detox. I hope this Sheriff get demoted to desk duty and that Paris gets a FULL 45 days in the county jail.
Crissy, Cleveland, Ohio
It is time she experienced some really Real Life. She is disgustingly spoiled, self centered, detatched from reality, and so arrogant that she does not even know she is arrogant. She should have been in a cell with most of the 2,200 fellow inmates, sleeping on jail pillows, covered with jail blankets, and eating jail food. And if she was sick, she should have been treated by the doctors who treat all the other inmates, although I really doubt it was anything more than just tantrums of a spoilt brat.
Margalit, Bedford, Texas
California law enforcement is a disgrace. If her parents haven't taught her responsibility by now then our court system should take on the job of at least seeing that she respects the law just like everyone else has to. Truly celebrity justice! What a wasted life.
W. Pyles, Lexington, Kentucky
It is obvious this child needs a wake up call and a dose of reality. I don't know if spending weeks in a small cell is really the answer, although I'm sure it wouldn't hurt.
What might be better is to put the girl to work in a pediatric cancer unit, a domestic violence shelter or something equally compelling where she might actually FEEL something for another human being and begin to realize the whole world is not Paris.
Susa, trumansburg, New York
The problem with this whole incident about Paris being let out of jail is that people don't understand how the law works. There are people under house arrest for crimes worse than DUI/DWI and to sentence Paris to jail was not te right choice. If you want humility, then sentence her to perform community service in a place like a halfway house or shelter so she can be exposed to what people really go through and why they end up in jail. Not everyone that is in jail belongs there. Paris was not one of those that belonged in jail. Save that space for the true criminal.
Joe Vidal, Mt. Bethel, PA, USA
She must be treated the same as any other law abiding citizen who made an individual decision to break the law. This is exactly why people in authority create riots by showing favoritism?
She should have served her time.
Jane Buchheit, McLean, Virginia
She's had more "second" chances than she deserves. She's not special. Just spoiled and rich. She should do the time.
Mark F., Minneapolis,
I am sure she does not like the pillows or the blankets, she has not had to deal with any normal things. I think she should be put to work doing things like every other women does.
She is just a girl like everyone else and if she gets house arrest so should every other person in that jail that has been sentence for the same thing.
She is no different then anyone else do your time. Grow -up
Hazel, Wichita, KS
Paris Hilton did the crime so she should serve the time.
Now that she has manipulated the Sheriff and medical personell, she should be sent to do her time in a Medical incarcerated facilty so that she will not have a nervous breakdown without being treated medically properly.
She should not receive special foods or other perks due to she is serving time for a crime. She should be put on suicide watch.
The Sheriff who violated the Judge's ruling should be fired.
Diana B., Pacifica, USA/CA
It isnt wise to keep a person in jail with her problem over an extended period of time and let the problem get worse."
Shall we apply this logic to a few other cases? What about drug addicts who are arrested for violation of probation or parole because of testing positive for drugs or perhaps being caught in a sting by undercover vice? Gosh, don't they experience withdrawals during the first weeks? Aren't they ill? Don't they develop mood disorders?
What percentage of the incarcerated population is thrilled to be in prison?
Studies show that many, many inmates suffer from mental illness. Or what about pregnant inmates? Do they mean to tell us that "health problems" excuse lawbreakers from serving time?
And since when does the sheriff's department make decisions that overrule the court?
A fine--no matter how hug--wouldn't cause a Hilton to blink an eye. And house arrest in a palace is a joke.
Paris Hilton is physically fit to be in jail. Too bad if she's unhappy about it.
kittencharmer, Portland, OR
All prisoners incarcerated for a similar crime should be released immediately. The poor should be treated in the same manner as the rich. It is no wonder why our system of justice and fairness is the laughing stock throughout the rest of the world. Just what kind of civil rights do we demonstrate to those we critizice. Medical issues in this case are in reality financial issues. SEND HER BACK!!!!!
ROBERT MYERS, CLEARWATER, FLORIDA
Back to jail!
Random Guy, orange, both
In regards to the undisclosed medical condition - My guess is that the sheriff was suffering from a major pain in the ass
Vade D, Carrboro, NC
I know young people her age who have made the same mistakes but they spent 30 days in jail and then 6 other weekends as well and lost their license. What makes her so special. A DUI is a DUI and probation violation is just as serious. This situation certainly gives the impression that there is a differant justice system for the rich in Hollywood. The rest of the country is made to pay for it's mistakes!
Michele Stutzer, Bel Air, Maryland
We all know there are two sets of justice..one for rich, one for poor, but it is really is pretty sorry to rub our noses in it... and that's just what this Paris Hilton early release does, rubs our nose in it. I can't help but be very angry, even though I usually am not even interested in this celebrity stuff.
ldepew, kingsport, tn
Prison is not a nice place, however, the system placed her in a better cell than those housing others. Prisons can be noisy, and they can be smelly. Everyone is upset when they are incarcerated, even the sophisticated felon. So what if it was a little chilly and she didn't eat her hot dog?!!
Send her back for her full term.
Her arrogance will make her a repeat offender
Lynn Garrison, Fort Lauderdale, FLORIDA
Get real, people. They can't protect her in prison and solitary confinement is cruel and unusual punishment in the light of the offence. A great many others who are rotting in prison here and in the USA should not be there, especially in the USA.
Corin Keiler-Lloyd, Wolverhampton, England
Where is the "good behavior" and basic good faith? I am very tired of the rich and powerful getting different treatment form the erest of us. How is one given a shorter sentence for good behavior before the good behavior is exhibited?
Now in America we sell justice to the rich and force it on the poor.
gene jaleski, longboat key, florida
It is more ludicrous and unfair to let her out and then haul her back into the same jail. It is the system which is flawed. Talk about hypocrisy - judges let many people, in particular those they 'favor' out without a penalty.
sonia, Los Angeles, CA
She should serve her time just like any other DUI person in the same situation. Money and lawyers should not change this sentence and especially not an undisclosed medical condition. If Mary Stewart did her time so should paris
steph, tulsa, ok
I do believe she should practice what she preaches as she said at the MTV awards. Paris did the crime now do the time. Just like anyone else would have to do. To bad if her pillow is not fluffy and her blankets are not soft and oh well when she get hungry enough she'll eat the hot dog and like it!!! Kiddos to the judge for getting anygry at the sheriff over ruling his decision. Its nice to know there are still some officials that can't be bought.
Elizabeth Ciaburri, North Haven, ct
I think this is the most outrageous circus I have seen in a long, long time. What happens to all the other inmates who get sick or can't handle being locked up? I think she's a spoiled little crybaby brat and is obviously getting the star treatment. The sheriff's department should be ashamed of itself for allowing such a travesty.
nancy, bronx, new york
"I'm going to do the time, I'm going to do it the right way."
Quoted, straight from Paris herself. I'm willing to be that in hindsight she probably wishes she could retract that statement. Wait a minute, what was I thinking? This is Paris Hilton, the highly puclicized socialite who's claim to fame is .. well .. what?
I reside in the great state of Nebraska, not that it amounts to a hill of beans, but apparently my own personal sense of humor doesn't thrive on thoughtless shows such as "The Simple Life"
After all, what does she care? She has apparently figured out a way to dupe the system. And how did she do it? By whining about conditions at the jail, and starving herself. Well done. A+.
I could probably ramble on for a few pages, but my box is almost full. I sincerely hope the judge reverses this decision, and Paris can actually follow through with her original claim and be an example, and the justice system isn't viewed as a glorified farce.
Mark, Omaha, NE
I would venture a guess that there are other individuals in the same jail as Paris Hilton, who would prefer the creature comforts of home. I am also sure they miss their families just as much as Paris. How many of those people were also released yesterday? None?
The special attention that has been paid to Paris Hilton and all of the rest of "young" Hollywood just helps to further the disparity between justice and celebrity justice. Furthermore for those who feel her sentence is too harsh, have you researched the DUI or DUS laws in your own communities? I would venture a guess that they are just a tough, if not more so.
My personal opinion . . . she did the crime and should also do the time. The FULL time!
Hannah, Charleston, SC
Entirely too much time and money is being wasted following the adventures of Paris Hilton. Bottom Line: She is a spoiled little brat who will never know the value of an honest days labor , or care !! Bill Ruppert < Riverhead, N.Y.
Bill Ruppert, Riverhead, United States, N.Y.
i did 30 days for not paying a 100 euro fine for drunk and disorderly.why should she be treated any different.this is outrages
joey doyle, dublin, ireland
It breaks the heart the cruelty of it all...sniff sniff.
Suck it up gal..anybody else would unhappily serve 37 days and be released 3 days early for good behavior...give me a break...
All things considered stupid SHOULD be painful...as should arrogance..
shannon, gainesville, Florida
Of course, money was the basis for the early release of Ms. Prissy. There wouldn't have been any other ordinary citizen, from a different walk of life, fortunate enough to be entitled to the type of special treatment Ms. Prissy received. To escape the punishment of her crime, reinforces the theory that money can buy you anything including and not limited to freedom. What kind of message or impact will this send to other rich children and young adults in the world. My recommendation is to send her back to JAIL now, before the repercussion of this decision spiral out of control.
Vicky Conerly

Vicky, Pittsburg, CA
I think she should complete her sentence in jail like the rest of us..I for one, at one time did spend 2 nights in jail and nothing happened to me..except learn my lesson. STrip her from all her glory and fame..and she is just one of us! Let her complain about the pillows, blankets and hot dogs..She needs to be returned to Jail..
Gloria, Las Vegas, USA, Nevada
It seems fairly straightforward to me: the judges explicit orders were that Miss Priss was to cool off in jail for 23 days and think about her flagrant violation of parole. Its not about driving on a suspended license. Its about disregarding the terms of her parole and giving the finger to the legal system. The judges order stated explicitly that she was NOT TO DO HER TIME UNDER HOUSE ARREST. To violate a judges order is also a crime. Hilton needs to go back to prison and the sheriff who violated the court order needs to be punished. Otherwise, there wll be an outbreak of disregard for the law the likes of which LA has not seen since the Watts riots.
